:00:21. > :00:23.in south east London says "no parent should have to make

:00:24. > :00:25.the decision to switch off their child's life support".

:00:26. > :00:27.30-year-old Oliver Dearlove was killed when Trevor Timon

:00:28. > :00:30.punched him in Blackheath Village in August last year.

:00:31. > :00:44.Oliver Dearlove was 30 years old. He worked in banking. The judge

:00:45. > :00:51.described him as a young man of fine character with long and promising

:00:52. > :00:55.career in front of him. He had been out in Blackheath and was waiting

:00:56. > :00:59.for a taxi home. He started chatting to a group of women. Trevor Timon

:01:00. > :01:02.from Plumstead didn't like what he saw. He went over to Oliver

:01:03. > :01:07.Dearlove, punched in the side of head and knocked him to the ground.

:01:08. > :01:11.Mr Dearlove was airlifted to hospital, but soon passed away. A

:01:12. > :01:15.postmortem examination found he died of bleeding to the brain. We spoke

:01:16. > :01:19.to his mother about what happened that night.

:01:20. > :01:21.We had a WhatsApp message come through about 4am,

:01:22. > :01:23.because there's no signal where we were, and the children

:01:24. > :01:28.We were told that Oliver had been assaulted and it was quite

:01:29. > :01:31.serious, so we jumped in the car straightaway.

:01:32. > :01:37.We slung our clothes in the boot and started to drive

:01:38. > :01:39.as fast as we could, really, to get to the motorway.

:01:40. > :01:42.The police tried to help us by blue lighting us,

:01:43. > :01:45.but we never actually caught up with them, so we just drove

:01:46. > :01:50.Then Clare came back to us and told us there was nothing

:01:51. > :02:01.So that was the worst car journey ever.

:02:02. > :02:05.Tell us what happened in court today.

:02:06. > :02:10.Trevor Timon was jailed for six years for manslaughter at the Old

:02:11. > :02:14.Bailey today. The judge said it was an unprovoked and gratuitous act. He

:02:15. > :02:17.was given five years an extended licence because he was considered as

:02:18. > :02:21.a significant risks to the public. The court learned he had previous

:02:22. > :02:25.convictions for other violent incidents.

:02:26. > :02:28.The fact they gave him six years, he must do six years,

:02:29. > :02:31.and he's got five years on licence, is quite a long time

:02:32. > :02:35.I feel the law needs to be changed and maybe take

:02:36. > :02:51.What she has been referring to there is what is described as the one

:02:52. > :02:54.punch law. A few states in Australia introduced it because they had

:02:55. > :02:57.similar incidents. It meant tougher sentencing for assaults involving a

:02:58. > :03:01.single strike while influenced by drugs and alcohol, but its

:03:02. > :03:04.effectiveness is still being debated by some.

:03:05. > :03:09.A very sad case, thank you for that. 15 people, believed to be from Iraq,

:03:10. > :03:12.have been found hiding inside "pallets of fruit"

:03:13. > :03:14.in the back of a lorry at Police say the people

:03:15. > :03:33.include a family of five - Kenneth Noye, who is serving a

:03:34. > :03:37.sentence for a road rage attack, has won a decision to refuse to move him

:03:38. > :03:42.to an open prison. He stabbed Stephen Cameron to death over 20

:03:43. > :03:47.years ago in Kent. He had argued it was unfair and irrational not to

:03:48. > :03:52.allow him to go to jail with lower security.

:03:53. > :03:55.Eight years after a fire claimed the lives of six people in a tower

:03:56. > :03:58.block in south London, the local council has today admitted

:03:59. > :04:01.Southwark Council were taken to court by the London Fire Brigade

:04:02. > :04:05.after what happened at Lakanal House in Camberwell in 2009.

:04:06. > :04:10.It started as a fire in a ninth floor flat.

:04:11. > :04:12.It could and possibly should have stayed that way.

:04:13. > :04:15.But poor fire safety at Lakanal House meant the blaze

:04:16. > :04:21.Flats above and below caught fire and six people lost their lives.

:04:22. > :04:24.It later emerged that the block had not had a proper

:04:25. > :04:28.An assessment that could have saved lives.

:04:29. > :04:32.I had a doctor's appointment in the morning but I would

:04:33. > :04:38.I saw the fire developing and it was terrifying, to be honest.

:04:39. > :04:42.It started in one dwelling and within about three quarters

:04:43. > :04:44.of an hour it had spread upwards and downwards.

:04:45. > :04:46.Falling debris in the case of the downwards spread,

:04:47. > :04:58.Today, Southwark Council pleaded guilty to four fire safety charges

:04:59. > :05:04.Despite the block being renovated three years before the fire

:05:05. > :05:06.the court was told there were no seals on any of the fire doors,

:05:07. > :05:08.there were problems with poorly boxed in wooden stairs

:05:09. > :05:11.and there were no partitions in suspended ceilings.

:05:12. > :05:13.Put together, it meant the smoke and fire spread more quickly.

:05:14. > :05:15.What happened was - it was laid out in court today -

:05:16. > :05:19.is investment in order to improve these flats for the people

:05:20. > :05:25.who were living in them, turned them instead into a death trap.

:05:26. > :05:29.The council failed to supervise the work being done to make sure

:05:30. > :05:32.that it complied with fire safety standards, and they failed to do

:05:33. > :05:35.risk assessments after the work was completed to ensure

:05:36. > :05:39.that the buildings were not only improved for the tenants,

:05:40. > :05:49.Lakanal has been closed since the fire but will reopen next month.

:05:50. > :05:57.It will once again how is Southwark tenants.

:05:58. > :05:59.Today, the council's barrister expressed sincere regret.

:06:00. > :06:01.I would go further than that, it should never have happened.

:06:02. > :06:05.People lost their lives and it is awful, it really is.

:06:06. > :06:08.I would go further than sincere regret, I would say

:06:09. > :06:24.Southwark says it has learned the lessons of the tragedy. It says it

:06:25. > :06:27.spent ?60 million on fire safety improvements across the homes it

:06:28. > :06:28.runs in the borough. Southwark will be sentenced early next week. They

:06:29. > :06:33.are likely to face a fine. That's it for now from me,

:06:37. > :06:46.Danaos. It was a lovely day today, compared

:06:47. > :06:52.to Thursday Storm Doris. Overnight we're the man next weather system

:07:08. > :07:10.spots of light rain moving up from the south-west and a strong

:07:11. > :07:13.south-westerly wind. Those are the temperatures in the capital, into
