:00:00. > :00:15.That's Newsnight with Emily. Here on BBC

:00:16. > :00:27.This programme has learned that Ukip is not going to field

:00:28. > :00:31.candidates in at least a quarter of London's constituencies.

:00:32. > :00:37.The party suffered badly in the local elections,

:00:38. > :00:41.but it's London Chairman has told us, the decision to withdraw

:00:42. > :00:45.is to ensure pro-Brexit candidates from other parties win.

:00:46. > :00:48.Here's our political editor, Tim Donovan.

:00:49. > :00:53.The man now known as the Brexit Secretary was deployed today

:00:54. > :01:13.So are you going to vote for us this time?

:01:14. > :01:21.70% of people in Thurrock voted Leave last year.

:01:22. > :01:29.So with that job done, will Ukip's support fall away here?

:01:30. > :01:36.Well, what we're see something a large number of Ukip

:01:37. > :01:44.They voted Ukip because they wanted Brexit.

:01:45. > :01:48.Now the question is - who can deliver on Brexit?

:01:49. > :01:52.We are finding whether it is a Ukip voter or frankly,

:01:53. > :01:56.an ex-Labour Remain voter, they all want a good deal.

:01:57. > :02:00.Ukip is standing in Thurrock and they've made Dagenham

:02:01. > :02:04.and Rainham, held by Labour, their key target.

:02:05. > :02:12.Orange is, so far as I know, being left alone.

:02:13. > :02:24.they aren't standing. maybe as many as 25 in the capital,

:02:25. > :02:27.The party's London Chairman told me it was to protect pro-Brexit former

:02:28. > :02:35.Ukip branches have decided not to stand against both

:02:36. > :02:39.Remainers who are in place but where the challenger

:02:40. > :02:43.is a strong Brexiter, about whose credentials we have no

:02:44. > :02:47.doubt or Levers who are in place, where their position may be not

:02:48. > :02:55.How many seats do you think might change hands as a result

:02:56. > :03:07.We think maybe five, maybe ten will quite

:03:08. > :03:18.Staying with the election and key policy commitments revealed

:03:19. > :03:21.in Labour's leaked draft manifesto could have a big

:03:22. > :03:28.Louisa Preston is here to tell us how?

:03:29. > :03:37.Labour is saying it'll play for HS2. But they want to link a train with a

:03:38. > :03:40.tunnel right under the City. Something we've covered on this

:03:41. > :03:42.programme and which has caused problem for commuters is the

:03:43. > :03:45.long-running dispute with southern rail. They say they'll end the

:03:46. > :03:48.practice of driver-only train. So they are saying guards will be back

:03:49. > :03:50.on trains, rather controversial after everything we have been

:03:51. > :03:53.through. They want thoond over commuter rail services to the mayor

:03:54. > :03:57.and transport for London, something we know the mayor will be very

:03:58. > :04:03.grateful for. As we know, as important as what is in the

:04:04. > :04:08.manifesto s what is not in it. Can you shed any light on that? Exactly.

:04:09. > :04:12.It is interesting to see what hasn't made it in. In the entire document,

:04:13. > :04:16.there is no mention of Heathrow. And I mean Heathrow expansion. Now, that

:04:17. > :04:20.may well be because we know the mayor is very much in favour of

:04:21. > :04:23.Gatwick. He doesn't want to go with Heathrow expansion. The Shadow

:04:24. > :04:27.Chancellor, John McDonnell is an MP next door to Heathrow, he doesn't

:04:28. > :04:33.want it either but the big unions do want it and so do MPs in the north.

:04:34. > :04:37.So it is interesting that it hasn't made it in. An interesting one. As

:04:38. > :04:42.Londoners, are there any other issues we should be aware of? Yes,

:04:43. > :04:45.Labour is saying that people who earn more than ?80,000 will also be

:04:46. > :04:50.taxed more. Obviously there are a lot of people in London that earn

:04:51. > :04:55.that sort of money, so it'll affect London more than many other places

:04:56. > :04:57.right across the country and on health, we know there's lots of

:04:58. > :05:02.reorganisation planned in London currently but Labour is saying they

:05:03. > :05:06.are going to halt all the changes and they are going to get local

:05:07. > :05:08.health groups back together and focus on patient need rather than

:05:09. > :05:14.the funding of services. Well, both Labour and Ukip will be

:05:15. > :05:18.standing in one of London's most hotly contested seats,

:05:19. > :05:21.that of Croydon Central. It's currently held by the Tories

:05:22. > :05:25.with the slimmest of majorities. So what are the issues

:05:26. > :05:28.which are important to people of the area which'll

:05:29. > :05:32.decide the result? And what are those fighting for your

:05:33. > :05:35.vote promising this time round? In a seat where the vote was won

:05:36. > :05:49.by the Conservatives, beating Labour by just 165 votes,

:05:50. > :05:54.there's everything to play for. A lot has changed since 2015

:05:55. > :05:58.with Britain voting to leave the EU, so just what is the political

:05:59. > :06:02.appetite in Croydon Central? We've got some politically

:06:03. > :06:06.themed doughnuts here. And tell me why you want

:06:07. > :06:17.to vote Conservatives. Because it's the most

:06:18. > :06:20.important time in our history that we need one party

:06:21. > :06:24.to go against Europe. Corbyn as leader and actually

:06:25. > :06:34.the party at working overall for the benefits of all the people

:06:35. > :06:38.rather than the elite at the top. Definitely want a blue one

:06:39. > :06:41.because stability is absolutely key. I like Jeremy Corbyn

:06:42. > :06:45.and I know a lot of people don't actually like him,

:06:46. > :06:49.but I think his ideas I think the Labour Party is going

:06:50. > :06:56.to represent younger people. Before long, we were out

:06:57. > :06:59.of Conservative and Labour Party doughnuts, and it was time to speak

:07:00. > :07:02.to some of the candidates. Gavin Barwell is confident

:07:03. > :07:06.of retaining the seat Croydon Central voted

:07:07. > :07:13.narrowly to leave the EU. He says the key issue

:07:14. > :07:16.is who can best lead We clearly feel that,

:07:17. > :07:23.in Theresa May, we've got the right candidate to provide that strong

:07:24. > :07:27.and stable leadership and that Jeremy Corbyn actually

:07:28. > :07:30.would represent a real threat to this country as we go

:07:31. > :07:33.through the Brexit negotiations. That's absolutely an issue

:07:34. > :07:37.that we will put front and centre, and it's very interesting that,

:07:38. > :07:40.if you look at my Labour opponent's leaflets,

:07:41. > :07:43.there's absolutely no mention So we are off now to meet Sarah

:07:44. > :07:54.Jones, who is Labour's candidate. She was up against Gavin Barwell

:07:55. > :07:58.last time, losing out She says she really fancies her

:07:59. > :08:05.chances this time around. She says her focus is

:08:06. > :08:09.on local issues, not Two years on, people can see

:08:10. > :08:16.the impact of the Conservative government and they are starting

:08:17. > :08:19.to understand that Barwell has People cannot get housing

:08:20. > :08:26.or get the jobs they want, people are struggling

:08:27. > :08:29.with their education. There are supply teachers coming

:08:30. > :08:33.in because there are not enough People are beginning to question,

:08:34. > :08:39.is this the only way? Ukip needs to be around

:08:40. > :08:46.because we will be there They picked up nearly 5000 votes

:08:47. > :09:00.in 2015, finishing third and well above the Lib Dems and

:09:01. > :09:03.Greens, but things are looking more We cannot ignore what happened

:09:04. > :09:10.in the local elections last week. Do you get worried that

:09:11. > :09:13.might affect your vote? It is a unique situation

:09:14. > :09:16.because we are in the middle of the general election

:09:17. > :09:20.and the Tories have taken We want a good Brexit

:09:21. > :09:27.agreement, but we do not On our doughnut run,

:09:28. > :09:34.there was indecision. And it is those voters

:09:35. > :09:38.the candidates will need to tempt if they are to win

:09:39. > :09:41.in London's tightest seat. The Greens and Lib Dems

:09:42. > :09:45.came fourth and fifth respectively in Croydon Central

:09:46. > :09:48.at the last election. This is what their

:09:49. > :09:51.candidates had to say. We do want a strong economy,

:09:52. > :09:55.but we've also got a social conscience so we do the right things

:09:56. > :09:59.for people that aren't as well I just want to bring

:10:00. > :10:05.the whole town together, stop it being divided,

:10:06. > :10:09.bring the whole town together We believe in a vote,

:10:10. > :10:19.a final vote, on the final Brexit We believe in progress

:10:20. > :10:27.and positive solutions. We want to see the economy

:10:28. > :10:30.work for everybody, not And here's a full list

:10:31. > :10:37.of candidates standing Well, you can keep

:10:38. > :10:44.across all developments in the general election -

:10:45. > :10:48.which is less than a month away- That's at the usual

:10:49. > :10:56.address - bbc.co.uk/news. And if you're on the move,

:10:57. > :10:59.download the BBC news app We want to see the economy

:11:00. > :11:08.work for everybody, not Now the weather.

:11:09. > :11:37., yes a humid dead. We have had photographs of the

:11:38. > :11:42.Now, humid air is coming in hyped. This cloud will be spreading

:11:43. > :11:48.northwards bringing rain and showers. More cloud will head our

:11:49. > :11:53.way. Yes, more rain to come across the south-east over night tonight.

:11:54. > :11:59.The south-west will have rumble of thunders and wetter weather into

:12:00. > :12:00.Northern Ireland. Scotland will stay dry. On the cool side
