:00:14. > :00:18.Flags are flying at half mast in the capital and hundreds

:00:19. > :00:20.gathered at impromptu vigils to show their solidarity

:00:21. > :00:24.Londoners know only too well the horrors of a terror attack.

:00:25. > :00:28.The device used having echoes of the 7/7 bombings.

:00:29. > :00:30.This evening, multi-faith leaders in the capital condemned the attack,

:00:31. > :00:43.A minute's silence for those affected by the Manchester tragedy.

:00:44. > :00:45.Multi-faith leaders gathered at Central Mosque in London

:00:46. > :00:57.I think it's very important for us, as one

:00:58. > :00:59.nation, whatever background, colour, religion or faith we are, we

:01:00. > :01:04.And it is very important that we remain

:01:05. > :01:17.Despite the fact that they are evil people who commit such terrible

:01:18. > :01:24.acts, that most of us, most people of all communities

:01:25. > :01:31.want to live in harmony with each other.

:01:32. > :01:33.In Trafalgar Square as well, people gathered.

:01:34. > :01:35.A vigil was organised to remember those killed in Manchester.

:01:36. > :01:38.I was on duty at 7/7 at King's Cross working

:01:39. > :01:42.And it sort of hit home when I woke up this morning and saw

:01:43. > :01:46.the news and my first thoughts were, people stood with me when I was at

:01:47. > :01:49.my lowest all around the world, saying we stand with London, and I

:01:50. > :01:51.wanted to do the same for people in Manchester.

:01:52. > :01:57.Phil Duckworth was badly injured in the 7/7 attack.

:01:58. > :02:01.For him, it also triggered the worst kind of

:02:02. > :02:06.Total shock, I could not believe it was happening all

:02:07. > :02:18.And I think my initial reaction was, basically, I didn't want

:02:19. > :02:27.He knows - because his wife went through it - what the

:02:28. > :02:30.families with those missing are suffering.

:02:31. > :02:38.I was a missing person for quite a long time and it

:02:39. > :02:40.is hard, very hard, hearing how difficult

:02:41. > :02:44.and the search for you, not having information to find sort

:02:45. > :02:46.of a loved-one and how to go about that.

:02:47. > :02:48.And that is where I really feel it is

:02:49. > :02:50.hard to deal with, to think about the people

:02:51. > :02:53.hard to deal with, to think about the people in Manchester

:02:54. > :02:56.Across London, flags were lowered on public

:02:57. > :03:06.buildings and there was this message from the Mayor.

:03:07. > :03:08.Londoners have been through attacks recently on their

:03:09. > :03:13.own city, but today, it was another city in their thoughts.

:03:14. > :03:15.These were some of the messages for the people of

:03:16. > :03:24.Be strong, be united, don't let them win.

:03:25. > :03:30.I know it's a load of cliches, but it's a cliche for a reason.

:03:31. > :03:31.Yeah, you know, we're with you, Manchester.

:03:32. > :03:37.So the best thing is to stick together and be strong.

:03:38. > :03:42.Anyone who attacks young girls is disgusting.

:03:43. > :03:49.And if they want to bring the fight to us, they

:03:50. > :03:52.bring the fight to us, but don't take it to little girls.

:03:53. > :03:54.A country united in the face of tragedy.

:03:55. > :03:57.Londoners may have already noticed an increased police

:03:58. > :04:04.presence in the capital, but that's set to change.

:04:05. > :04:12.And yes, with the heightened risk, things will look very different for

:04:13. > :04:16.tomorrow morning. In practical terms, soldiers will replace armed

:04:17. > :04:20.officers in some of the prominent public places as part of a

:04:21. > :04:26.long-standing plans -- plan to free up the Armed Forces to work on

:04:27. > :04:31.operations relating to terror. It is called operation temper.

:04:32. > :04:39.They will be placed in public places and at some police cordons. We have

:04:40. > :04:43.a number of big sporting events, the FA Cup final at Wembley, a big rugby

:04:44. > :04:48.final at Twickenham and we know that the security will be more robust.

:04:49. > :04:52.Fans being asked to arrive early so they can have their bags searched,

:04:53. > :04:56.to try to prevent and make sure people are kept safe. Earlier, we

:04:57. > :05:00.spoke to a terra specialist who told is a bit about what will be going on

:05:01. > :05:05.behind-the-scenes and who asked for the public to be vigilant. How can

:05:06. > :05:09.the services respond to this, the security services? These plans and

:05:10. > :05:16.procedures are well practised and hopefully we'll execute them well so

:05:17. > :05:20.there is a lot of activity behind-the-scenes. In order to make

:05:21. > :05:24.those physical and system assets more effective, we have to have

:05:25. > :05:27.members of the public, so it is the soft power of counterterrorism and

:05:28. > :05:31.if they are not paying attention, you certainly do not want them to

:05:32. > :05:35.feel afraid but if they're not aware and alert, it makes us less

:05:36. > :05:39.effective. This attack is two months after Westminster which is still

:05:40. > :05:43.fresh in our minds. Yes, this was a more sophisticated attack,

:05:44. > :05:48.Westminster was a knife and a car and somebody here has built a bomb

:05:49. > :05:53.and detonated it, possibly part of a week larger group. It takes us back

:05:54. > :05:56.to the bombings of 7/7. The Metropolitan Police will share that

:05:57. > :05:59.information with Manchester and looking at their tactics to avoid

:06:00. > :06:02.this kind of attack. Thank you very much.

:06:03. > :06:05.In other news: A family who were housing at least 26

:06:06. > :06:07.migrants in appalling conditions in North West London are due to be

:06:08. > :06:18.sentenced for breaching housing regulations.

:06:19. > :06:20.The tenants were paying up to ?70 a week for rooms

:06:21. > :06:22.jammed with bunk beds, with one occupant sleeping

:06:23. > :06:28.In court today, because they were responsible for property in

:06:29. > :06:34.condition is described as appalling. And we filmed back in July as Brent

:06:35. > :06:41.Council raided a four bedroomed semi in Wembley. Inside, inspectors found

:06:42. > :06:46.at least 26 people had been living here and bunk beds were packed into

:06:47. > :06:53.almost every room. The tenants here has been paying between ?40 to ?70 a

:06:54. > :06:59.week. Six sleeping spaces. Outside, in the back garden, there was a shed

:07:00. > :07:03.with a woman living but inside as well. Today, the owners and managers

:07:04. > :07:07.of this property were convicted of or admitted multiple breaches of the

:07:08. > :07:11.regulations on housing standards. And in court to witness this,

:07:12. > :07:17.officers from Brent Council involved in this raid. It was disgraceful.

:07:18. > :07:23.And there were six men are living in box bedrooms, but we bunk beds in

:07:24. > :07:29.each room. When we went out into the back garden, we found a shack which

:07:30. > :07:34.was literally a shack with tarpaulin and timber but together with a lady

:07:35. > :07:42.living in it. It cannot believe it, it was disgraceful. ?600 of rent was

:07:43. > :07:46.taken from this property and clearly somebody was making a lot of money

:07:47. > :07:52.by exploiting tenants and providing them with it -- appalling living

:07:53. > :07:56.conditions. The court heard that the rent was collected and they would

:07:57. > :07:59.have known about this date of the property they helped to manage.

:08:00. > :08:05.Would you like to live in these conditions in Muirhouse? Would you

:08:06. > :08:08.like to live in those conditions? There will be sentenced at Harrow

:08:09. > :08:16.Crown Court. It's being called a "health

:08:17. > :08:18.emergency", and London regularly breaches legal limits

:08:19. > :08:19.for air quality. Now, researchers at Imperial College

:08:20. > :08:22.London have shown why diesel fumes It is not news that

:08:23. > :08:39.diesel fumes are a harm It's estimated they contribute

:08:40. > :08:43.to the premature deaths of more And cleaning the capital's air

:08:44. > :08:46.has become a political In October, the most polluting cars

:08:47. > :08:52.will pay a so-called toxicity charge An ultra-low emission zone

:08:53. > :09:07.will follow in two years' time. Today, researchers from Imperial

:09:08. > :09:09.College have published research which shows how diesel particles

:09:10. > :09:11.attack the lungs and They activate receptors on the nerve

:09:12. > :09:29.endings that tell you to cough. Basically, they directly activate

:09:30. > :09:31.receptors which cause This is a problem for everybody,

:09:32. > :09:41.but more of a problem for those who have asthma

:09:42. > :09:46.and respiratory conditions. Just ten days ago, doctors

:09:47. > :09:49.demonstrated at Downing Street, calling for more to be done

:09:50. > :09:54.to tackle the issue. The Mayor, of course, wants

:09:55. > :09:57.the government to pay people to Data shows that in schools

:09:58. > :10:09.and nurseries, the air quality levels are way above the legal limit

:10:10. > :10:13.and I want to see those driven down so that no school and nursery has

:10:14. > :10:16.levels that breach world so that no school and nursery has

:10:17. > :10:20.levels that breach World The team at Imperial

:10:21. > :10:23.hope their research will lead to the issue of pollution moving up

:10:24. > :10:29.the political agenda. Well, as we've been hearing,

:10:30. > :10:31.last night's horrific events are even more shocking

:10:32. > :10:34.because of the high number So what about parents concerned

:10:35. > :10:37.about what to say to their kids, who may be confused,

:10:38. > :10:40.upset or distressed by what they're seeing on television

:10:41. > :10:42.or on social media? With more details, here's

:10:43. > :10:52.Katharine Carpenter. Would you want to go for that? Like

:10:53. > :10:56.many parents, waking to the News of the terror attack on Manchester

:10:57. > :11:01.Arena, Amanda Dawson wondered how to broach it with her ten-year-old son.

:11:02. > :11:05.They have tickets for the same concert at London's O2 Arena on

:11:06. > :11:10.Thursday so it felt very close to home. The first thing he wanted to

:11:11. > :11:13.do was to watch it on the news for himself. There is that disbelief

:11:14. > :11:19.when you hear something and when you see it, it becomes real. So that is

:11:20. > :11:24.how our conversation went. And you were really quite angry this

:11:25. > :11:28.morning. I was very curious, I just want to watch it on the news. I was

:11:29. > :11:36.just curious about what happens mainly. This is Newsround. We are

:11:37. > :11:42.waking up to the news that there was an attack last night... Some news

:11:43. > :11:45.programmes and websites have content that might help parents explain to

:11:46. > :11:50.their children what is going on in the world, but with so many

:11:51. > :11:53.upsetting headlines on television and social media, what advice is

:11:54. > :11:58.therefore parents talking to their children? The NSPCC say to listen

:11:59. > :12:04.carefully to a child's fears and worries and to reassurance and

:12:05. > :12:10.avoid, located explanations that could be frightening and confusing.

:12:11. > :12:15.Because of these events and children have been victims, children feel

:12:16. > :12:17.much closer to these events and they are more emotionally traumatised.

:12:18. > :12:21.They think they are more likely to become a victim is as a consequence

:12:22. > :12:26.and as a result of that, they have high levels of anxiety and they need

:12:27. > :12:32.additional support to be able to address the worries they have. It

:12:33. > :12:38.can be heartbreaking to hear these bombings and terrorist attacks, it

:12:39. > :12:42.is quite heartbreaking, it just makes you question what is next. I

:12:43. > :12:47.want them to go out and enjoy what London has to offer and not feeling

:12:48. > :12:51.scared every time they get on the Jupiter or if they go to a big event

:12:52. > :12:56.like that. To reinforce that message, Amanda says she'd and has

:12:57. > :13:01.somewhat to see Ariana Grande and concert and their weightings to find

:13:02. > :13:02.out if the concert on Thursday is still going ahead. -- and they are

:13:03. > :13:05.waiting to find out. And there's more information

:13:06. > :13:07.and advice about how to talk to children about recent events

:13:08. > :13:13.on the BBC Newsround website. I'll wish you a very

:13:14. > :13:15.goodnight now and leave you with Elizabeth Rizzini,

:13:16. > :13:23.for a check on the weather. They pretty enter the day with a lot

:13:24. > :13:28.of sunset pictures from across the capital. There will be more sunshine

:13:29. > :13:32.but as we had to be the next couple of days and for the rest of the

:13:33. > :13:38.week, it is sunnier although there will be a lot of cloud around at at

:13:39. > :13:42.times. It is dry with high pressure dominating. Towards the end of the

:13:43. > :13:49.working week, it will turn warm and heart. By Saturday, we could be

:13:50. > :13:53.looking at 30, 21 degrees. At this time of year, we normally would be

:13:54. > :14:00.looking at 18, 19 Celsius. Overnight, variable cloud and

:14:01. > :14:07.largely clear. Dry it into tomorrow morning, temperatures between 12 and

:14:08. > :14:09.15 Celsius in Central London. So a mild good morning. Brightness and

:14:10. > :14:18.sunshine first think and quite a lot of cloud. With high pressure ) rose

:14:19. > :14:24.and like wings, it will break the cloud more readily than to day with

:14:25. > :14:28.good sunshine by the time we get to tomorrow and temperatures on a par

:14:29. > :14:33.with what we had yesterday, 23 and 25 Celsius, in the centre of town.

:14:34. > :14:39.This is the pressure chart for the next couple of days. Thursday, high

:14:40. > :14:43.pressure migrating to the East. Allowing warm air from the near

:14:44. > :14:50.continent on the South East so temperatures rising, on Thursday and

:14:51. > :14:56.Friday. We could be looking at 25, 20 seven Celsius. This is the

:14:57. > :15:00.summary over the next couple of days. A rising temperatures and is

:15:01. > :15:11.the heat going to last over the Bank Holiday Weekend? It might do. This

:15:12. > :15:15.is the National forecast. Double. Hello, cloud topping and tailoring

:15:16. > :15:16.the country today and that
