:00:11. > :00:14.Good evening from BBC London News, I'm Victoria Hollins.
:00:15. > :00:17.There was extra security in place today as thousands of runners took
:00:18. > :00:21.to the Capital's streets for a 10K race.
:00:22. > :00:23.Organisers say last-minute changes were made to arrangements
:00:24. > :00:26.in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police
:00:27. > :00:27.and City Hall, following the Manchester bombing,
:00:28. > :00:42.United they run. A week ago today Londoners woke up to the news of the
:00:43. > :00:46.Manchester attack. Today, undeterred, they turned out in their
:00:47. > :00:50.thousands to pound the capital's streets, but the shadow of last
:00:51. > :00:54.week's horrendous events loomed large. You have to come out in
:00:55. > :01:01.support. You have to go on. That's it. I'm here for Manchester. I felt
:01:02. > :01:04.safe, didn't you? Yeah, it was very well organised, definitely. It made
:01:05. > :01:07.us even more determined I think, come out, show our solidarity. The
:01:08. > :01:11.atmosphere round the course has been wonderful. Everyone's really pulled
:01:12. > :01:15.together. Good for us. Despite the recent tragic events in
:01:16. > :01:20.Manchester, over 12,000 runners turned out today for London's
:01:21. > :01:23.vitality 10 K snaking their way through some of London's historic
:01:24. > :01:27.sites before crossing the finish line here in front of Buckingham
:01:28. > :01:31.Palace. But behind-the-scenes, it was the safety of the athletes and
:01:32. > :01:36.the spectators that was uppermost in the minds of the organisers. We had
:01:37. > :01:39.a full security review with the mayor's office, the Metropolitan
:01:40. > :01:43.Police, the City of Westminster, all the agencies, the royal park,
:01:44. > :01:48.everyone working together. A lot of security has been beefed up. We
:01:49. > :01:51.don't give any details because that actually reduces the security, if
:01:52. > :01:56.you give details. But a lot has happened. And the planning paid off.
:01:57. > :01:58.Today's race went off without a hitch. Londoners determined to carry
:01:59. > :02:02.on. With just over a week to go before
:02:03. > :02:05.the general election, BBC London has visited one
:02:06. > :02:08.of our key battle grounds. Carshalton and Wallington
:02:09. > :02:10.was the only seat in London that the Liberal Democrats
:02:11. > :02:13.won in 2015. So will their message on Brexit
:02:14. > :02:16.bring victory again? Or will local issues
:02:17. > :02:28.be more important? Welcome to the constituency of
:02:29. > :02:33.Carshalton and Wallington, on the Surrey border where most people
:02:34. > :02:37.voted Leave. It's one of the tightest marginals in London. But
:02:38. > :02:44.will it be bins or Brexit that decide it here? This is an
:02:45. > :02:49.incinerator, which will be burning waste at 850 degrees. It's rubbish
:02:50. > :02:52.that concerns the Green candidate, as this incinerator nears completion
:02:53. > :02:57.in the north of the constituency. He's been fighting it for years.
:02:58. > :03:01.It's a really big issue. Imagine if you live around here. I was chatting
:03:02. > :03:06.to a resident earlier, she was telling me that she owns her house.
:03:07. > :03:10.What are the chances of her selling her house with that here now? The
:03:11. > :03:14.value of the property's come down. I feel so sorry for people living
:03:15. > :03:19.around here. Will those who live nearby be tempted to vote Green? As
:03:20. > :03:23.we were filming Karen and her daughter passed by. It was not at
:03:24. > :03:27.all what we were led to believe. I feel we've been betrayed in a lot of
:03:28. > :03:31.ways. Will that change how you vote, would you consider voting Green? The
:03:32. > :03:35.thing is with the Green Party as muches you might have our best
:03:36. > :03:42.interests at heart, no-one listens. What do you say to that? Locally, if
:03:43. > :03:46.enough people actually realise that the Green candidate that actually
:03:47. > :03:49.took on the council's standing we could actually get enough votes to
:03:50. > :03:54.be able to challenge those two parties as well. Thank you very
:03:55. > :03:57.much, I'll bear you many n mind. New bin collections from the local
:03:58. > :04:00.Liberal Democrat council have caused real problems here. There are
:04:01. > :04:05.concerns that services at the local hospital could be cut. The MP for
:04:06. > :04:11.the last 20 years has been the Liberal Democrat Tom Brake. He voted
:04:12. > :04:17.Remain. At the last election, he got just 1,510 votes more than the
:04:18. > :04:22.Conservatives. Clearly the bins issue has not been helpful. We're
:04:23. > :04:25.seeing a decline that the level of complaints associated with the new
:04:26. > :04:28.contract. But there are other issues that I think play much more
:04:29. > :04:32.significantly in people's hearts. That is the future of our local
:04:33. > :04:37.hospital, where I've got a track record of over 25 years of
:04:38. > :04:44.campaigning for that hospital. Ukip aren't putting up a candidate here.
:04:45. > :04:48.Last time, they got 7,000 votes. The Tory candidate, who also voted
:04:49. > :04:52.Remain, says he'll be tougher with the local council. One of my
:04:53. > :04:55.campaign issues has been to give the council a kick when it doesn't
:04:56. > :04:58.provide people the services they're expecting. We have had the same
:04:59. > :05:02.council in control here for more than 30 years. The Liberal Democrat
:05:03. > :05:07.MP I'm up against is from the same party. He finds it perhaps difficult
:05:08. > :05:12.to give them the kick they need when they underperformed. I think it's
:05:13. > :05:16.going to be about Brexit and other national issues. I think it will be
:05:17. > :05:20.about the NHS as well. There's big local issue in terms of St Helier
:05:21. > :05:25.hospital. They feel that they need somebody to speak up for them. This
:05:26. > :05:30.constituency isn't unusual, Brexit could dominate. But other local
:05:31. > :05:34.issues might play their part in what happens on June 8.
:05:35. > :05:39.of candidates standing in Carshalton and Wallington on your screen now.
:05:40. > :05:46.There's plenty more information about the election and your local
:05:47. > :05:51.Londoners are being asked not to feed the birds in Regent's Park,
:05:52. > :05:54.following fears it could be linked to cases of inbreeding
:05:55. > :06:00.The park has one of the largest grey heron colonies in the capital.
:06:01. > :06:06.There is a mystery bird feeder who is dishing up unconventional
:06:07. > :06:10.food for these herons in Regent's Park.
:06:11. > :06:13.This is one of the areas where you will see a lot of people
:06:14. > :06:16.putting food out for the geese and the ducks and the herons.
:06:17. > :06:19.They are putting out bread, they are putting out all sorts
:06:20. > :06:22.of scraps and notoriously lots of curried rice.
:06:23. > :06:25.That has been a big problem here because it is just
:06:26. > :06:29.It has been appearing regularly beside the water's edge and eaten
:06:30. > :06:32.There are now concerns about possible genetic
:06:33. > :06:39.Because they are so laden, they are not flying off
:06:40. > :06:42.and exploring other areas, so they are becoming quite isolated
:06:43. > :06:45.here in their little island and the problem is if they do become
:06:46. > :06:48.isolated, they do not meet other herons from other
:06:49. > :06:53.You end up with a very small gene pool and generation after generation
:06:54. > :06:58.This island in Regent's Park is a home to around 20
:06:59. > :07:05.It is one of the largest grey heron colonies in the whole of London.
:07:06. > :07:09.But it is not just here where bird feeding is causing a problem.
:07:10. > :07:13.Over in Richmond Park it is also a concern.
:07:14. > :07:16.You get interested in the wildlife and after a while they
:07:17. > :07:24.Royal Parks benefit from 77 million visitors to the park each year
:07:25. > :07:29.and you can imagine if each of us just brings a little handful of food
:07:30. > :07:31.for the birds that is far too much food for them.
:07:32. > :07:34.Back in Regent's Park the mystery of the curried rice
:07:35. > :07:42.Let's turn now to a check on the weather with Wendy.
:07:43. > :07:50.It's been a strange old weekend. It has, yes. The weather for the week
:07:51. > :07:53.ahead is settling down. We'll have decent spells of sunshine and
:07:54. > :07:56.towards the end of the week, it's going to become very warm once
:07:57. > :08:00.again. We did have a fairly unstable atmosphere over the last 48 hours or
:08:01. > :08:03.so. That situation is clearing away now. We have a cold front going
:08:04. > :08:07.through tomorrow. It's not going to come to much. Building in behind it,
:08:08. > :08:11.high pressure. That's going to settle things down. Fewer showers,
:08:12. > :08:16.more in the way of sunshine. And a bit of heat once again. You may
:08:17. > :08:20.still see one or two showers this evening. They're tending to ease
:08:21. > :08:23.away. There's not much pep left in them any way. Most of the night is
:08:24. > :08:26.dry. Plenty of cloud around. Temperatures falling to 14 or 15
:08:27. > :08:30.degrees. Another warm night. Then off to work again tomorrow. Not
:08:31. > :08:34.school, though perhaps. Maybe one or two showers first thing. But most of
:08:35. > :08:38.the day is going to be dry once again. There'll be a fair amount of
:08:39. > :08:40.breaks in the cloud. Decent spells of sunshine, a little breezy.
:08:41. > :08:44.Temperatures around about where they should be at this time of year. Then
:08:45. > :08:48.Wednesday looking like a decent day as well. Plenty of sunshine, high of
:08:49. > :08:51.22 degrees, lighter winds than Tuesday. Towards the end of the week
:08:52. > :08:54.temperatures could be picking up to the mid-20s again.
:08:55. > :09:00.A band of rain through Friday. If it does what it should and clears
:09:01. > :09:03.through, next weekend will be with showers, a little fresher and
:09:04. > :09:11.breezy. That's a long way off though. Much less complicated
:09:12. > :09:14.weather to enjoy in the meantime. That's it for now. We're back in
:09:15. > :09:19.breakfast tomorrow morning from 6. 25am. From all of us here, whatever
:09:20. > :10:02.you're doing, enjoy the rest of your night. Bye for now.
:10:03. > :10:08.Hello. There I think we've seen the back of the thunder storms now. Over
:10:09. > :10:13.the next few days, our weather will start to come in from the Atlantic.
:10:14. > :10:18.We'll draw down fresher air from the North West. Recently, we've been
:10:19. > :10:21.drawing up humid air from the south, from the near continent. Of course,
:10:22. > :10:22.it all went bang in the early hours of
