:03:47. > :03:52.For the past 18 months we have been urged to know what to do
:03:53. > :03:56.The officer in charge of policing Borough Market praised the public's
:03:57. > :04:00.We don't put these things out unless we really need
:04:01. > :04:02.to but the community know what to do, they reacted
:04:03. > :04:08.People did as they were asked and other people acted heroically
:04:09. > :04:11.and got in there and helped other people and protected one another
:04:12. > :04:17.and helped officers and I can't speak highly enough.
:04:18. > :04:19.They were absolutely outstanding on the day.
:04:20. > :04:22.But the man who last year reviewed how well London was prepared
:04:23. > :04:25.for a terror attack is urging Londoners to do more
:04:26. > :04:30.It needs to be part of everyday life, that you automatically know
:04:31. > :04:34.that in the event of an incident like that, you run away from danger.
:04:35. > :04:37.If you can't run because you are boxed in or whatever else,
:04:38. > :04:40.then you hide as well as you can and as soon as you're safe,
:04:41. > :04:43.make contact with the police to let them know that
:04:44. > :04:47.you are there and that however many other people are there with you.
:04:48. > :04:49.This morning the police brought temporary barriers
:04:50. > :04:59.On Saturday night, once again, pedestrians were run over

:05:29. > :05:30.In Manchester it was an explosive device.
:05:31. > :05:32.The terror threat we face is evolving.
:05:33. > :05:34.I think what is happening is unprecedented.
:05:35. > :05:38.There is very strange ways that people are going about what's
:05:39. > :05:41.happening and we are faced with scenarios that we have never
:05:42. > :05:44.seen before so it is hard as police to plan for this sort of thing.
:05:45. > :05:48.No-one quite knows how the city will look and feel
:05:49. > :05:51.in the coming months and years, as it confronts a different
:05:52. > :06:02.While there have been heart-breaking accounts of how the horrific events
:06:03. > :06:03.on Saturday unfolded, we've also heard heart-warming
:06:04. > :06:11.Ordinary people showing remarkable courage and compassion.
:06:12. > :06:14.Our correspondent Karl Mercer has been speaking to some of the medical
:06:15. > :06:17.staff who rushed to help those injured.
:06:18. > :06:23.London's NHS was tested once again on Saturday night.
:06:24. > :06:25.From the front line paramedics who treated people around
:06:26. > :06:27.Borough Market, to the specialist trauma teams who cared
:06:28. > :06:33.People like Malik Ramadhan, a doctor at the Royal London in Whitechapel,
:06:34. > :06:37.cycling home when he saw dozens of police cars shoot past him.
:06:38. > :06:40.He turned round and went back to work just as the first
:06:41. > :06:47.I think what was perhaps different was if we take 12 casualties
:06:48. > :06:51.normally there will be a range of injuries and severity but all 12
:06:52. > :06:55.of the people we received were very severely injured.
:06:56. > :06:58.The thing that was perhaps different was the clear lethality.
:06:59. > :07:02.The stab wounds were designed to kill people.
:07:03. > :07:05.There were no little slices, there were no flesh wounds,
:07:06. > :07:07.they were all very deep, penetrating injuries
:07:08. > :07:17.And they all needed an operation, they all needed something to repair
:07:18. > :07:23.London's Ambulance Service sent 80 medics to the scene,
:07:24. > :07:27.eventually taking 48 patients to hospitals across the capital.
:07:28. > :07:32.There were lots and lots of patients and quite confusing information
:07:33. > :07:37.Lots of members of the police and the public did some quite heroic
:07:38. > :07:40.things to try and save the lives of people who had been
:07:41. > :07:45.14 patients remain at Kings College Hospital,
:07:46. > :07:49.The predominant injuries we're treating are stab
:07:50. > :07:52.wounds to the head, neck, torso and abdomen.
:07:53. > :07:55.We have also got a number of patients who suffered blunt force
:07:56. > :08:01.trauma as well from probably being hit by a vehicle.
:08:02. > :08:06.And how do you deal with the relatives when they come in?
:08:07. > :08:11.That's something that's been more difficult than normal,
:08:12. > :08:16.a huge range of nationalities and couples and I think that's
:08:17. > :08:21.something that's been quite different for us,
:08:22. > :08:26.a series of couples walking along the bridge had been knocked down.
:08:27. > :08:30.Some people have pushed their loved one out of the way of the van
:08:31. > :08:34.who are now injured and so we've had to cope with the feelings
:08:35. > :08:38.of people who aren't injured but were also part of the events.
:08:39. > :08:45.As well as looking after the person who is injured from the event.
:08:46. > :08:48.Unfortunately I've dealt with a number of incidents like this
:08:49. > :08:52.before so while I wouldn't say it's become a normality, I have a way
:08:53. > :08:55.of coping with it and I'll sit back and reflect on what went one
:08:56. > :09:00.and reflect on the excellent care that the team here has delivered.
:09:01. > :09:03.I look round and I can see a bunch of world-class people saving lives
:09:04. > :09:17.To think I was temporarily leading the team is incredibly humbling.
