:00:00. > 3:59:59That's all for tonight. Continuing coverage on the BBC News channel

:00:00. > :00:08.Here, on BBC One, it's time with any developments.

:00:09. > :00:12.I'm a short distance from Grenfell Tower. You have seen how it looks

:00:13. > :00:16.tonight. You have seen how it looked when the flames just took over the

:00:17. > :00:21.building. Now, take a look at this. Take a look at this mountain of

:00:22. > :00:24.clothes. This is the response from local people donating goods for the

:00:25. > :00:29.people who've lost everything. You have these clothes here. You have

:00:30. > :00:32.toiletries here, tooth brushings, food and water in this small space

:00:33. > :00:36.alone. 100 volunteers working hard to make sure this gets to the people

:00:37. > :00:42.who need it most quickly. Let's not forget. It's around about 24-hours

:00:43. > :00:46.since that fire took hold, people in a neighbouring tower block saw what

:00:47. > :00:57.happened in front of their eyes. So how they feeling tonight? Are they

:00:58. > :01:01.scared, worried or anxious. Jim Wheble has been speaking to them.

:01:02. > :01:10.It's not the view that muse ya ever expected, on the 13th floor,

:01:11. > :01:14.You mean literally where those flames are now?

:01:15. > :01:16.Where the flames are, if you move to the right,

:01:17. > :01:25.Are you going make some more calls or go -

:01:26. > :01:29.I'm going to make some calls and later on I'm going to go to bed

:01:30. > :01:32.at the Rugby Centre to inquiry if they have any news.

:01:33. > :01:33.Angela's further up, on the 19th floor.

:01:34. > :01:35.Right in front of her, the neighbouring block,

:01:36. > :01:45.As soon as I saw what was going on, I just couldn't, I couldn't bear it.

:01:46. > :01:48.I turned on the news and just, sort of, let the news

:01:49. > :01:51.But you could still hear the screams over the TV,

:01:52. > :01:59.over the windows closed, over the doors closed.

:02:00. > :02:01.Dennis is on the 10th floor, looking at a view that

:02:02. > :02:03.Because I also remember, a couple months ago,

:02:04. > :02:11.But it was different because that tower was one flat.

:02:12. > :02:13.It's weird how here, how the whole...

:02:14. > :02:15.The whole building just goes on fire.

:02:16. > :02:20.So with this view from their balcony, how safe do they feel now?

:02:21. > :02:32.Do you feel a bit unsafe now yourself?

:02:33. > :02:39.Hopefully, everything - we can find a positive out of this

:02:40. > :02:42.I don't want to think of the negatives.

:02:43. > :02:52.As safe as you can be living on the 19th floor of a tower block

:02:53. > :02:54.building when you've just watched another tower block building

:02:55. > :03:11.People at this donations centre working at a furious rate, as you

:03:12. > :03:15.can see. They are not working alone. Outside here you have people from

:03:16. > :03:19.the sheikh Temple who have made food for the people volunteering who

:03:20. > :03:22.might need to eat because they have been working hard all day. The

:03:23. > :03:26.church have have their own election centre working with the ones here.

:03:27. > :03:30.You have people of no religion who are involved because it's the right

:03:31. > :03:33.thing to do. It's incredible to see. The people who need the help of the

:03:34. > :03:37.volunteers are not just the people from Grenfell Tower, it's people in

:03:38. > :03:40.surrounding properties who have had to evacuate their homes. Catherine

:03:41. > :03:44.Carpenter has been speaking to them. A neighbour brings 88-year-old

:03:45. > :03:47.Mary Dennis a chair. She's been awake since the early

:03:48. > :03:50.hours when she fled her home, All of a sudden I heard my door -

:03:51. > :04:00.bang, bang, bang. I did not get, I didn't get up,

:04:01. > :04:04.but what happened when they bang it There was enough screaming,

:04:05. > :04:12.children screaming, Another neighbour

:04:13. > :04:28.offers food and water. Diego says he needs to keep

:04:29. > :04:30.busy so he doesn't dwell Quite a few people we knew from

:04:31. > :04:35.the tower apparently didn't make it. They saw people jumping

:04:36. > :04:38.from the building. Overnight, St Clements Church

:04:39. > :04:43.became his sanctuary. Here, and at every rescue centre,

:04:44. > :05:21.donations have flooded in all day. the Al-Manaar Mosque counts many

:05:22. > :05:23.Grenfell House residents Today, they were sorting

:05:24. > :05:25.clothes and cooking. Food for those breaking

:05:26. > :05:27.fast tonight or in need Other members of the community took

:05:28. > :05:31.people into their homes, at least three families crammed

:05:32. > :05:33.into this terrace The police evacuated us and my son,

:05:34. > :05:37.he was having an asthma attack. If not, we'd have been

:05:38. > :05:42.left out all night. Also taking in, four month

:05:43. > :05:45.old Yesmin, her bed for the night a stranger's sofa while her mother

:05:46. > :05:51.still waits for news You know what, it's not just second

:05:52. > :05:53.hand clothes donated. People have bought new items of clothes, n

:05:54. > :05:55.toiletries. This is extraordinary from Londoners, isn't it? The

:05:56. > :05:57.response from the community in London has been overwhelming. We are

:05:58. > :06:00.all shocked and horrified by what we have seen in the tragic events of

:06:01. > :06:02.the tower. The generosity of the community has been overwhelming.

:06:03. > :06:04.What struck me is that communities are working together? Absolutely.

:06:05. > :06:07.Communities come from all over London and all over the country to

:06:08. > :06:11.be able to donate and to contribute and support. Everyone you see here

:06:12. > :06:15.is pretty much a volunteer. They are giving their services, giving their

:06:16. > :06:19.hours, Middlesbroughle of the night almost they are working flat out.

:06:20. > :06:23.Jasmine you worked flat out to make this happen? To be honest, it wasn't

:06:24. > :06:28.something I was planning. I called the venue owner and said - look, I

:06:29. > :06:32.know this space is vacant, would it be OK to use this space for

:06:33. > :06:35.donations? It just spiralled into this. It's just been incredible.

:06:36. > :06:41.Absolutely incredible. It's incredible to see as well. Thank you

:06:42. > :06:45.so much for ling us be here tonight. It comes back to the fire, one of

:06:46. > :06:49.the questions that a lot of local people are asking is how it spread

:06:50. > :06:53.up the tower block so very quickly. One of the theories we are hearing a

:06:54. > :06:58.lot of is that it had to do with the cladding around the building. That

:06:59. > :07:00.is a theory which our reporter Gareth Furby has been looking more

:07:01. > :07:04.into it. Arnold Tarling is a fire

:07:05. > :07:06.safety expert and he's What we're testing

:07:07. > :07:09.here is polyurethane, The reason he's doing

:07:10. > :07:13.this is because he has a theory about why the fire spread

:07:14. > :07:16.so rapidly at the Grenfell Tower. It's to do with a

:07:17. > :07:19.material that may have The actual ridgied board insulation

:07:20. > :07:31.that I believe is most likely to have been used is made from the same

:07:32. > :07:34.material, polyurethane. I'm now setting fire

:07:35. > :07:36.to this, and this is That is very, very

:07:37. > :07:40.rapid and this is a typical material used

:07:41. > :07:51.for insulating external buildings. Mr Tarling's test was put out

:07:52. > :07:54.easily, but he thinks tonnes of similar materials could have

:07:55. > :07:56.quickly burnt-out of control. The theory that I have is

:07:57. > :07:59.that the building has been clad with a flammable insulation

:08:00. > :08:01.material on the exterior. Of course there is no official

:08:02. > :08:03.statement yet on the cause of the fire and the reason

:08:04. > :08:20.for its rapid spread. But three years ago at a safety

:08:21. > :08:23.conference, Arnold Tarling publicly warned that cladding high-rise

:08:24. > :08:25.buildings could end in disaster and now he fears he may

:08:26. > :08:28.have been proved right. It looks typical

:08:29. > :08:30.of a cladding-related fire on the exterior

:08:31. > :08:32.of the property. All the external cladding

:08:33. > :08:33.has completely gone. Which is what you would

:08:34. > :08:36.expect if you've got The principle of the design

:08:37. > :08:44.of the cladding is that it's there to allow rain to effectively

:08:45. > :08:48.get in and run down that cavity. The problem is that it will also

:08:49. > :08:50.allow fire to spread up and what will happen is it

:08:51. > :08:53.will actually create a path for the fire to spread and encourage

:08:54. > :08:56.the fire to spread faster A spokesperson for the contractors

:08:57. > :09:00.Rydon, who completed the refurbishment last year,

:09:01. > :09:05.said it met all required building control fire regulation and health

:09:06. > :09:14.and safety standards. The company Harley Facades Limited,

:09:15. > :09:18.which was also involved in the refurbishment, said it would not be

:09:19. > :09:21.appropriate to comment or others speculate on any aspect of the fire

:09:22. > :09:24.or its causes in advance of the At this time the company said

:09:25. > :09:28.it was not aware of any link between the fire and

:09:29. > :09:36.the exterior cladding. Anyone concerned about family or

:09:37. > :09:39.friends there is a special helpline that you can call to find out if

:09:40. > :09:50.there is any information. Let me give you that. The Metropolitan

:09:51. > :09:56.Police Casual Bureau the number is: 0800 0961, 233. The number is

:09:57. > :09:59.available on our Facebook and BBC web page. Everyone is, woing really

:10:00. > :10:02.hard to make things happen. I've never seen anything like what I'm

:10:03. > :10:06.seeing in West London tonight. People are working hard to come

:10:07. > :10:07.together, showing a really unified response to the tragedy that has

:10:08. > :10:10.happened. That's it for now from me, but let's

:10:11. > :10:18.find out what the weather's up In London we hit 27 degrees. The

:10:19. > :10:22.next couple of days will be fresher weather wise. Warm enough in the

:10:23. > :10:27.sunshine before temperatures start to sore up once again. 30 Celsius

:10:28. > :10:31.potentially Sunday. Tonight a very mild and muggy night. Temperatures

:10:32. > :10:36.in the centre town no lower than 17 or 18 degrees. Dry night with partly

:10:37. > :10:40.clear skies. Sunny start to Thursday with light wind around it will be

:10:41. > :10:44.warmest during the latter stages of the morning, around lunchtime. Cloud

:10:45. > :10:48.will push across threatening light showers. Most of the time will be

:10:49. > :10:53.dry. Temperatures may peak at 24, 25 degrees. Early afternoon before

:10:54. > :10:58.dropping off a little bit as fresher air pushes in and the westerly wind

:10:59. > :11:01.kicks in. Friday we will do it again as far as temperatures are concerned

:11:02. > :11:02.with bluer skies and lighter winds into the weekend. It will get

:11:03. > :11:04.hotter. into the weekend. It will get

:11:05. > :11:28.hotter. Ben has more Tomorrow, will be a different

:11:29. > :11:29.feeling day due to this cold front feeling day due to this cold front

:11:30. > :11:33.pushing in from the west and behind feeling day due to this cold front

:11:34. > :11:35.that we will see at least for a time a return to fresher conditions. The

:11:36. > :11:36.that we will see at least for a time front
