:00:00. > :00:13.Coming up: We reveal new concerns over the safety of high-rises

:00:14. > :00:15.from residents of a block identical to Grenfell.

:00:16. > :00:22.But first, to the protests that began late this afternoon.

:00:23. > :00:27.From where I am standing here in North Kensington, we can hear the

:00:28. > :00:39.protests in the streets around us. After years of not feeling listened

:00:40. > :00:42.to, the anger fuelled by this tragedy arrived at the door of the

:00:43. > :00:46.local council. No one from the borough of Kensington and Chelsea

:00:47. > :00:50.came out to speak, but outside, a man who lost family in the fire

:00:51. > :00:57.spoke to the crowds. We took our demands to the council and we

:00:58. > :01:02.expected a response from the chief executive of the Council, who has

:01:03. > :01:07.failed to turn up. A few hours later in Whitehall, another protest. This

:01:08. > :01:11.time, they gathered outside the Government department accountable

:01:12. > :01:15.for social housing, and then marched to Downing Street. Outside number

:01:16. > :01:19.ten, I meet a nine-year-old schoolboy who asked his month ago on

:01:20. > :01:23.a demonstration advertised on Facebook. They know a Colombian girl

:01:24. > :01:26.who is still missing. Because I don't believe this is right. Would

:01:27. > :01:30.you like it if you were in that building and all you could see was

:01:31. > :01:35.dead bodies on the floor? You wouldn't think it was right, so

:01:36. > :01:42.Theresa May's just ruined everything. It's not about the rich

:01:43. > :01:46.and the poor, it's about, you know, we are all humans, and these people

:01:47. > :01:49.died in less than half an hour. Firefighters are not getting paid

:01:50. > :01:54.the right amount of money. It's just really sad, really sad. Local

:01:55. > :02:00.campaigners from other parts of London were also there, out in

:02:01. > :02:06.force. It's so sad, but we have to be angry now. We have to mourn, but

:02:07. > :02:11.we have to be changing the whole rotten system. The demonstration

:02:12. > :02:18.which started out in Whitehall has gone through central London, through

:02:19. > :02:23.Trafalgar Square and we are now one Regent St. There are thousands of

:02:24. > :02:27.people, children, social housing protesters, political protesters.

:02:28. > :02:31.People are looking for justice for their friends, family and neighbours

:02:32. > :02:35.who died. Many others are behind them. And the issues of better

:02:36. > :02:37.social housing and accountability for those who preside over it have

:02:38. > :02:42.also been brought to the fore. Now, let's explore some

:02:43. > :02:44.of the safety concerns that Not just here in North Kensington,

:02:45. > :02:56.but across London. The anger now is palpable,

:02:57. > :03:06.but the concerns have been raised Posts by Grenfell residents have

:03:07. > :03:13.highlighted what they claim was a general failure to inspect

:03:14. > :03:16.and maintain fire safety equipment. They blame an ongoing

:03:17. > :03:24.culture of negligence. They say there is damning evidence

:03:25. > :03:27.of the poor safety record. "It's a truly terrifying thought,

:03:28. > :03:31.but only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude

:03:32. > :03:32.and incompetence." We've been told that the cladding

:03:33. > :03:35.in these buildings are totally safe. Nigel lives in an

:03:36. > :03:38.identical tower block. Over many years, he's raised similar

:03:39. > :03:41.concerns on behalf of residents. There had been a number of fires

:03:42. > :03:44.in the previous years We have 165 flats in one

:03:45. > :04:09.of these buildings. There was a period of time,

:04:10. > :04:12.we don't know how long, that these were totally unusable,

:04:13. > :04:14.because thieves had broken into the building due to having very

:04:15. > :04:17.little security and actually stole Hi.

:04:18. > :04:19.Hello, hi. Monica lives on the 19th floor,

:04:20. > :04:22.and watched as the fire took hold. I just think, if anything,

:04:23. > :04:39.no-one will come to save us. You have been raising worries and

:04:40. > :04:41.concerns, like your neighbours, do you feel that the authorities listen

:04:42. > :04:43.to you? No. "On hearing the fire alarm,

:04:44. > :04:47.leave the building by...route." "Attack fire if possible

:04:48. > :04:50.using appliances provided." I've never seen any appliances -

:04:51. > :04:55.there are no fire extinguishers. Firefighters have always

:04:56. > :04:57.worked with communities to clarify fire safety,

:04:58. > :04:59.but the union says I think there's a misapprehension

:05:00. > :05:12.often about a firefighter's work, it's not just going to fires

:05:13. > :05:15.and pointing a jet at the flame There's a lot of fire safety work,

:05:16. > :05:19.a lot of prevention work, getting into the community,

:05:20. > :05:21.teaching people about fires, doing inspections, doing

:05:22. > :05:23.home fire safety visits, And there is no doubt that the huge

:05:24. > :05:27.cuts that have been visited upon the Fire Service,

:05:28. > :05:29.particularly in London over the last There's suspicion, too,

:05:30. > :05:33.that a public inquiry closely controlled by the Government

:05:34. > :05:35.might not truly get We have to be very concerned

:05:36. > :05:43.as to why we're going down a public inquiry route,

:05:44. > :05:46.when we have a hundreds of years system in place of an inquest,

:05:47. > :05:50.which, with a High Court judge appointed as a coroner, can deal

:05:51. > :05:53.with it openly and transparently. It's really important we're not left

:05:54. > :05:56.waiting for two, three, What I'm asking is for an interim

:05:57. > :06:06.response to the inquiry this summer. We need to make sure local

:06:07. > :06:09.residents and families have proper representation,

:06:10. > :06:10.and they're given We need to make sure that

:06:11. > :06:15.if there is any individual organisation responsible,

:06:16. > :06:19.they're criminally prosecuted. Theresa May visited the site this

:06:20. > :06:22.evening, but left quickly after a crowd descended,

:06:23. > :06:24.shouting, "Coward," There is much to do to win

:06:25. > :06:43.back the trust of this That's all we've got time for here

:06:44. > :06:49.in North Kensington. You can keep up-to-date on our website and on our

:06:50. > :06:51.Facebook page. Time to wish you good night. I will leave you with Chris

:06:52. > :07:04.Fawkes, who has the weather. It will be a warm night, with

:07:05. > :07:11.temperatures falling no lower than 15 Celsius. Tomorrow, it becomes

:07:12. > :07:15.very warm, temperatures reaching 29 Celsius in the centre of London.

:07:16. > :07:21.Through the afternoon, that is 84 Fahrenheit. If anything, Sunday will

:07:22. > :07:25.be hotter, temperatures hitting 30 Celsius in the centre of town,

:07:26. > :07:29.making it the hottest day of the year so far. The warm weather stays

:07:30. > :07:30.with us in the early part of next week, temperatures reaching 32

:07:31. > :07:31.Celsius also on week, temperatures reaching 32

:07:32. > :07:47.Celsius also on Monday. The best of the sunshine today was

:07:48. > :07:50.across England and Wales. We still have this feed of cloud into the

:07:51. > :07:57.north-west, and that was thick enough for some drizzle and poor

:07:58. > :08:01.visibility across the coast. Chingford finished the day with

:08:02. > :08:07.decent sunshine. That will stay with most of us for the weekend, and it

:08:08. > :08:12.will turn increasingly warm. It will be hot for some, and increasingly

:08:13. > :08:16.humid as well. Certainly worth bearing in mind. The reason why is a

:08:17. > :08:22.south-westerly wind dragging up this warm air from the Azores.

:08:23. > :08:24.Temperatures in Spain could be in the mid-40s, the mid-30s in France,

:08:25. > :08:25.and
