:00:00. > :00:00.terrorist incident. It is both moving and uplifting.

:00:00. > :00:21.Welcome to BBC London news outside Finsbury Park, where worshippers

:00:22. > :00:26.have been arriving for prayers. Security has been stepped up at the

:00:27. > :00:33.mosque and at mosques across the capital. You can probably see an

:00:34. > :00:37.increased police presencing presence to reassure a community feeling

:00:38. > :00:42.anxious. But we know London's police force is already stretched and the

:00:43. > :00:46.mayor is urging the Government to reverse planned cuts to the Met.

:00:47. > :00:50.Here is our home affairs correspondent.

:00:51. > :00:51.An east London mosque evacuated this afternoon.

:00:52. > :00:54.They had found a mobile phone ringing, the caller

:00:55. > :00:59.There wasn't, but it's left people worried.

:01:00. > :01:02.It has been an immensely difficult day.

:01:03. > :01:06.On top of everything, everyone here is fasting it's

:01:07. > :01:09.still Ramadan and yeah it is a very sensitive time at the moment

:01:10. > :01:15.and the community is feeling vulnerable and scared.

:01:16. > :01:18.In North London, the Prime Minister was visiting Finsbury Park Mosque.

:01:19. > :01:24.Just yards from where the attack took place last night.

:01:25. > :01:26.Through coming here the Prime Minister is looking

:01:27. > :01:30.to offer reassurance, but many people have told us that

:01:31. > :01:33.although they're shocked and saddened by what happened,

:01:34. > :01:35.they're not necessarily surprised that Muslims have been

:01:36. > :01:40.Some people here told us they had feared a backlash after the recent

:01:41. > :01:49.We met 28-year-old hospital worker Selma.

:01:50. > :01:52.I used to think London was a safe place to live,

:01:53. > :02:04.I was slowly convinced in London Bridge, because the people

:02:05. > :02:07.keep upsetting people, they're going to fight back.

:02:08. > :02:09.So that's not going to do us a favour.

:02:10. > :02:12.Even though we had nothing to do with it.

:02:13. > :02:15.Scotland Yard said it took the threat of right-wing extremism

:02:16. > :02:18.seriously and there would be patrols across the capital in

:02:19. > :02:30.The people of this community have a I think very good working

:02:31. > :02:32.relationship with the local police they will be seeing more police

:02:33. > :02:42.in the area, particularly around religious establishments.

:02:43. > :02:44.They will more officers on the streets.

:02:45. > :02:47.They may see more armed officers on the streets as well.

:02:48. > :02:49.And we will be communicating with them and listening

:02:50. > :02:52.to them as we have today about their concerns about about any

:02:53. > :02:57.But one former head of counter terrorism at the city of London

:02:58. > :02:59.police was sceptical that all places of worship could be protected.

:03:00. > :03:02.There are more than 500 mosques in London alone and hundreds

:03:03. > :03:06.and hundreds of Muslim centres, it is simply not realistic to have

:03:07. > :03:13.officers outside all of them and in this type of attack,

:03:14. > :03:17.people patrolling on the street are completely ineffective.

:03:18. > :03:21.The only way to stop somebody in a vehicle

:03:22. > :03:23.with barriers and extremists, being shoot them immediately.

:03:24. > :03:29.This was the third terror attack in four months.

:03:30. > :03:35.The mayor said he was worried that the Met didn't have enough

:03:36. > :03:37.resources and appealed to the Government to reverse planned

:03:38. > :03:44.I am concerned about the resources the Met Office and others have.

:03:45. > :03:50.I have been lobbying for more resources.

:03:51. > :03:53.My message for the Government is the plans for further

:03:54. > :03:55.cuts of ?400 million, don't do it, my message

:03:56. > :03:58.to the government is the plans you have to change the police

:03:59. > :04:00.funding formula so London loses more money, don't do it.

:04:01. > :04:04.The Home Office told us the Met could would have the resource too

:04:05. > :04:07.keep us safe and secure and thrill will be a public consultation

:04:08. > :04:16.Tensions are running high in some places.

:04:17. > :04:18.This has been a traumatic week for London.

:04:19. > :04:20.First fire and now terrorism once again.

:04:21. > :04:38.For many, weariness as well as worry hangs in the summer air.

:04:39. > :04:45.Our reporter joins me, and the worry that Nick mentioned, you have been

:04:46. > :04:50.speaking to people, what is their feeling? Many people have come to

:04:51. > :04:53.prayer and it is very full here. But of course a sense of anxiety, but

:04:54. > :04:58.what I have got from people is that they feel the need to carry on with

:04:59. > :05:04.their lives. Obviously, everybody's anxious and we are worried about, we

:05:05. > :05:10.don't know, I mean, is this going to happen again or is this the last

:05:11. > :05:14.time? We just hope that everybody gets united and you know. You felt

:05:15. > :05:20.the need to come back tonight? Yes. Why? We do not want to be stopped by

:05:21. > :05:28.such activities. I mean, it shouldn't deter people from going

:05:29. > :05:34.about their own business. It is not just Muslim people here? No you will

:05:35. > :05:40.see love will win, terror will lose. People from all faiths are here,

:05:41. > :05:46.there is table with people giving out tea and food and all faiths

:05:47. > :05:51.coming together. Thank you. There is no doubt that these are challenging

:05:52. > :05:57.times for the capital it comes days after the Grenfell Tower fire.

:05:58. > :06:00.Today, the commander leading the investigation gave his account of

:06:01. > :06:07.what he and the emergency services saw and what they were faced with

:06:08. > :06:11.that day. I have investigated major crime for most of my service and I

:06:12. > :06:17.have seen some terrible things, but I don't think anything prepared me

:06:18. > :06:21.more what I was going to see. It is hard to describe my feelings, I can

:06:22. > :06:27.not imagine and I would not want to put myself in the position of those

:06:28. > :06:33.families, but being can colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and

:06:34. > :06:37.from the London ambulance service and other police officers, I think

:06:38. > :06:43.it is fair to say it is a very emotional working in there. But we

:06:44. > :06:49.will do it with professionalism and do everything we can as quickly as

:06:50. > :07:00.we can, to locate and recover everybody who is in there. Stuart

:07:01. > :07:03.Cundy there. We have learned that fire adits in London have -- audits

:07:04. > :07:08.in London have changed. The Fire Brigades Union have called for

:07:09. > :07:12.checks to be tightened and the Government's asked councils to check

:07:13. > :07:18.which blocks have the same cladding material used in the Grenfell Tower.

:07:19. > :07:29.What happened here has again focussed attention on the

:07:30. > :07:38.safety of the capital's tower blocks.

:07:39. > :07:42.Sonia has lived here in Tower Hamlets for four years, her block

:07:43. > :07:45.doesn't have sprinklers and while it has been

:07:46. > :07:51.They do checks and everything else, I'm not going to

:07:52. > :07:55.But it still don't make you feel better

:07:56. > :08:00.I'm sure they said they done fire checks.

:08:01. > :08:07.The Fire Brigades Union also has concerns about checks.

:08:08. > :08:10.It says job cuts have reduced its role,

:08:11. > :08:13.private companies can now carry out assessments and these minutes show

:08:14. > :08:17.that cuts even led to a delay of a fire audit on a tower close to

:08:18. > :08:24.It was put down to internal staffing issues at the fire service.

:08:25. > :08:35.In fact, fire audits over a five year period in London have

:08:36. > :08:38.And the unions want regulations tightened.

:08:39. > :08:43.You will find a lot of premises are being inspected by

:08:44. > :08:45.third party companies, I don't believe they're as skilled as the

:08:46. > :08:48.We used to inspect a range of businesses,

:08:49. > :08:56.private residences, highrises.

:08:57. > :09:03.We no longer carry out that same regime and I think what we are

:09:04. > :09:07.witnessing is the regulations being avoided in some areas. Today the

:09:08. > :09:12.Government wrote to councils asking them to check if their tower blocks

:09:13. > :09:16.had been cladded using same materials to those at Grenfell

:09:17. > :09:25.Tower. A fire assessment was carried out at the tower in 2016. In tower

:09:26. > :09:30.hamments the council -- tower hamments the council says the blocks

:09:31. > :09:34.have been given up-to-date fire risk assessment. At this block tomorrow

:09:35. > :09:42.there will be an emergency meeting to try and reassure rest debts. The

:09:43. > :09:48.Government said it invests heavily in prior prevention. -- fire

:09:49. > :09:53.prevention. A review by the mayor said the fire service had coped well

:09:54. > :10:02.with the cuts. But the questions are not fading and answers could be

:10:03. > :10:06.months away. That is all from us in Finsbury Park tonight. I will wish

:10:07. > :10:14.you a peaceful good night and hand you to Wendy for a check on the

:10:15. > :10:22.weather. Well we had the hottest day of the year, 32.4 degree and the

:10:23. > :10:27.heat wave continues. We have another warm evening. And that leads into

:10:28. > :10:32.another one of those uncomfortable nights. We had clear sky and light

:10:33. > :10:38.winds and very muggy. Temperatures fall nothing lower than 20 degrees.

:10:39. > :10:42.Another warm start tomorrow. A sweaty commute and fierce sunshine

:10:43. > :10:49.with just a smattering of cloud from the north. More of a breeze

:10:50. > :10:54.tomorrow, but still high temperatures, up to 31 degrees in

:10:55. > :10:58.central land and up to 32 on Wednesday as the wind swings to the

:10:59. > :11:04.west. It freshens up later in west. It freshens up later in the

:11:05. > :11:16.week. Now thele national forecast. The heat we are experiencing in some

:11:17. > :11:22.parts is now the most prolonged spell of heat in June, that is the

:11:23. > :11:25.key, in June, for around 20 years. We have had five days of

:11:26. > :11:32.temperatures of 30 degrees or more in a row and today up to 33 degrees

:11:33. > :11:40.just west of London. So a little too hot for some. We are on a par with

:11:41. > :11:45.many exotic locations, including Athens. Let me show you the

:11:46. > :11:51.temperatures around now, so still around the mid 20s. At 11 o'clock.

:11:52. > :11:55.The reason I'm showing you is these vams that you can see -- values you

:11:56. > :11:58.can see are higher than what we would normally get during the day

:11:59. > :11:59.time this time in
