:00:00. > :00:12.Here on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:13. > :00:18.Fire wardens are to go on patrol at a housing development in Camden -

:00:19. > :00:21.where the tower blocks have similar cladding to the one

:00:22. > :00:25.used in Glenfell Tower in north Kensington.

:00:26. > :00:28.The local authority has confirmed the cladding will be removed

:00:29. > :00:31.from the Chalcots Estate as soon as possible, but until then,

:00:32. > :00:38.Karl Mercer has been speaking to local residents -

:00:39. > :00:43.All of this cladding will come down soon.

:00:44. > :00:46.So far, just a few panels on the Chalcot Estate in Camden have

:00:47. > :00:51.The results have prompted the council to get rid of them all.

:00:52. > :00:53.This estate was refurbished a decade ago.

:00:54. > :00:57.It's now emerged that the cladding contains similar chemicals to those

:00:58. > :01:04.A lot of residents are a bit worried about it.

:01:05. > :01:07.Sprinklers and fire alarms and everything else, we haven't got.

:01:08. > :01:14.Locals were sent a letter this morning, explaining

:01:15. > :01:19.One thing we were always asking about was fire safety.

:01:20. > :01:21.Fire safety, fire safety, and fire safety.

:01:22. > :01:25.We asked for fire alarms, sprinklers, we asked for all those

:01:26. > :01:30.things to actually have really active fire safety systems.

:01:31. > :01:35.We ended up with a building that was clad that was supposed

:01:36. > :01:38.to be more safe than what we had before, and we were sold

:01:39. > :01:43.There are key differences with the installation...

:01:44. > :01:45.The council leader has been before the media today,

:01:46. > :01:48.her teams now checking corridors and stairwells, running 24-hour

:01:49. > :01:51.fire warden patrols, and checking electrical goods

:01:52. > :01:55.She says the council's also seeking legal advice,

:01:56. > :01:57.saying the cladding was not what they ordered.

:01:58. > :02:00.Why would your inspectors not have picked that up if it wasn't

:02:01. > :02:02.to the specification that you asked for?

:02:03. > :02:07.I don't think we would have had any reason to need to take these panels

:02:08. > :02:11.down to an independent test centre and see if they'd burn.

:02:12. > :02:13.We thought we were working with reputable companies

:02:14. > :02:17.and we thought we had what was specified, and we feel let

:02:18. > :02:22.The mayor today urged other councils to step up their checks on tower

:02:23. > :02:26.We're speaking to other councils across London and and the Government

:02:27. > :02:30.has agreed to accelerate the checks on those councils across London.

:02:31. > :02:32.My message to landlords is, use the service at your disposal.

:02:33. > :02:35.The London Fire Brigade is doing checks.

:02:36. > :02:38.We've got to make sure every single tower block is safe.

:02:39. > :02:40.More money has been promised by government to remove

:02:41. > :02:44.Camden is holding meetings with its local residents to reassure

:02:45. > :02:59.Louisa Preston it on the Chalcots estate where the council has been

:03:00. > :03:04.meeting local residents. Yes, that's right. This public meeting was all

:03:05. > :03:08.about reassuring the people that live in the tower blocks behind me,

:03:09. > :03:14.especially now that we know that this cladding could be a fire risk.

:03:15. > :03:16.I'm being told there are some extremely angry exchanges between

:03:17. > :03:19.residents and the council, cars because they want to know how long

:03:20. > :03:25.it's going to take cladding off viz tower blocks. The chief executive of

:03:26. > :03:30.Camden Council said he wants to make sure it's off within weeks, not

:03:31. > :03:33.months. He also said there fire safety patrols going around these

:03:34. > :03:38.estates. I've seen some of them here tonight. But on our programme at

:03:39. > :03:41.6:30pm, we heard from a fire expert. He said that whilst the cladding is

:03:42. > :03:46.being taken off the flats, residents should be moved out.

:03:47. > :03:49.They should be getting the large families with children

:03:50. > :03:53.They should be getting the people who are disabled

:03:54. > :03:57.You look at the rate at which that fire spread,

:03:58. > :03:59.and you think the fire wardens will get everybody

:04:00. > :04:03.The fire wardens may well end up dying in a property that

:04:04. > :04:14.We spoke to Camden Council again tonight and we ask is whether they

:04:15. > :04:17.would be moving people out of viz tower blocks. They reassured as they

:04:18. > :04:22.are convinced the measures that have been put in place are adequate. They

:04:23. > :04:27.are also checking electrical white goods in the flats, to make sure

:04:28. > :04:31.they are all safe as well. We heard today there are other flats across

:04:32. > :04:34.the country that may have flammable cladding on them. We're not exactly

:04:35. > :04:41.sure where those are. We haven't been told as yet. There will be many

:04:42. > :04:43.residents in the capital in high is right flats tonight extremely

:04:44. > :04:48.worried and councils across the capital are concerned about doing as

:04:49. > :04:51.much as they can to try to reassure those residents. Our political

:04:52. > :04:56.editor Tim Donovan has spent the day with the team in Tower Hamlets.

:04:57. > :05:02.We're also telling people how to be fire safe in your own homes.

:05:03. > :05:04.But one thing above all on people's minds...

:05:05. > :05:07.The good news in Tower Hamlets is that we've been putting cladding

:05:08. > :05:10.on the blocks in the last few years and we've never used

:05:11. > :05:14.And that includes this block itself, in the middle of having

:05:15. > :05:18.The council is relieved the right material has been used.

:05:19. > :05:23.But it's hardly the only issue troubling tenants now.

:05:24. > :05:27.Lots of people like yourself are going on about the stay put policy.

:05:28. > :05:30.Should you stay where you are, or just try and get out?

:05:31. > :05:33.After watching what happened in that building, I'm not going to stay put.

:05:34. > :05:36.As long as everyone tells me stay put, I'm going out!

:05:37. > :05:39.So what is the right thing to do, then?

:05:40. > :05:41.It seems much clearer protocols are needed.

:05:42. > :05:46.Looking after my own children, I don't know how I would go down ten

:05:47. > :05:49.stairs if, God forbid, what happened in that building...

:05:50. > :05:52.Over the last year, the council had already been reviewing

:05:53. > :05:55.and upgrading its fire assessment across the borough.

:05:56. > :05:58.We need to make sure really that those are put back, then...

:05:59. > :06:00.Another tenant is found to have removed the fire

:06:01. > :06:06.The kitchen itself needs to hold the fire back at bay

:06:07. > :06:09.so that the rest of the property is a safe haven.

:06:10. > :06:13.Marcella moved in here in November and now has to put the door back.

:06:14. > :06:16.Did you have any idea it was important to have a door

:06:17. > :06:24.When we had an inspection, they kind of said yeah, fine,

:06:25. > :06:36.You switch off electricity when you leave the house.

:06:37. > :06:41.You have to be so mindful, but it's another 300 families

:06:42. > :06:47.Refurbishment here is nearly complete.

:06:48. > :06:52.We are being asked by a lot of residents about sprinkler

:06:53. > :07:01.We haven't got them, but we have them in bits

:07:02. > :07:03.of the building, so the bin store, which is a vulnerable place,

:07:04. > :07:07.Are you thinking about putting them elsewhere?

:07:08. > :07:12.So much now could come under review, but tenants in high-rise blocks

:07:13. > :07:20.here, as across the capital, are waiting eagerly for answers.

:07:21. > :07:22.In other news, commuters using Southern Rail

:07:23. > :07:28.Members of the RMT union will walk out on Monday tenth July as the row

:07:29. > :07:35.over staffing and driver-only trains goes on.

:07:36. > :07:37.Today was a good day for train spotters.

:07:38. > :07:40.Well, maybe that's a bit unfair, because millions of Londoners

:07:41. > :07:43.are going to be interested in the future of their rail

:07:44. > :07:47.It's the new Crossrail train to be used on the Elizabeth Line -

:07:48. > :07:49.which has gone into service between Liverpool

:07:50. > :08:01.The first Elizabeth Line train draws in, bang on time.

:08:02. > :08:04.After a few final checks, and fan photos, it's

:08:05. > :08:12.Capable of carrying 1,500 passengers, more than double

:08:13. > :08:15.previous trains, and with better efficiency, journeys

:08:16. > :08:24.Going to make your life easier, hopefully?

:08:25. > :08:30.I've been travelling on these trains for years and they're always just

:08:31. > :08:35.Well, air conditioning makes a difference, today.

:08:36. > :08:37.Sheila's son will be driving one of the 66 new trains in the fleet.

:08:38. > :08:48.A new train has brought the spotters out too, of all ages.

:08:49. > :08:54.Yes, I have been for quite a while, now.

:08:55. > :08:57.So, I live in Romford, so right in the heart of the line,

:08:58. > :09:00.really, and over the last couple of years we've seen the trains

:09:01. > :09:03.being tested and all the improvement works beginning to take shape.

:09:04. > :09:05.We've been disrupted for so long in London.

:09:06. > :09:08.It's just nice to see what kind of trains we'll be able

:09:09. > :09:12.And this is what they're trying to improve -

:09:13. > :09:14.just one commuter service elsewhere in London today.

:09:15. > :09:20.As you're experiencing, you've got your jacket on,

:09:21. > :09:22.so have I, it's a warm day in London, another warm day.

:09:23. > :09:26.This is air cooled, there is proper passenger visual displays as well as

:09:27. > :09:30.Great, clean seats and configurations, through carriages

:09:31. > :09:33.that give that sense of space as well, so this is going

:09:34. > :09:38.Of course, this is also good news for Shenfield.

:09:39. > :09:40.It will put the area firmly on the map.

:09:41. > :09:43.The journey time will be quicker so it should be good for business.

:09:44. > :09:46.This area normally would be stockbrokers going into the city,

:09:47. > :09:51.but the Crossrail is opening up over to the west London side of things,

:09:52. > :09:55.so we've had more buyers from Islington, Fulham.

:09:56. > :09:57.The full route through central London should be operating

:09:58. > :10:08.Not record-breaking temperatures but still very

:10:09. > :10:13.Not record-breaking temperatures but still very warm.

:10:14. > :10:15.Definitely still warm but the temperature drop in the last 24

:10:16. > :10:19.hours has been extraordinary, more than 10 degrees. Much more pleasant.

:10:20. > :10:24.Fairly decent weather on the way for tomorrow. Tonight, fairly quiet on

:10:25. > :10:28.the weather front. Temperatures in the city around 14 Celsius. Those

:10:29. > :10:33.fresh Atlantic conditions continue to set in. Friday is looking partly

:10:34. > :10:38.cloudy skies, a bit of sunshine, temperatures similar to what we had

:10:39. > :10:42.today, around 23. In the centre of London. The weekend is looking a

:10:43. > :10:47.little cooler. Those Atlantic winds will bring in one or two showers. If

:10:48. > :10:51.you have a barbecue land there might be spots of rain in the morning, but

:10:52. > :10:57.the second half of the day looks better. Temperatures 20-23. Sunday

:10:58. > :11:01.is probably the best bet. Let's look at the Outlook. A few showers in

:11:02. > :11:03.there. Decent weather. Now the National Outlook.

:11:04. > :11:09.there. Decent weather. Now the National Outlook.

:11:10. > :11:15.Good evening. Like it or not, our heatwave has been and gone. It

:11:16. > :11:19.doesn't look like hot weather will be back for quite some time.

:11:20. > :11:26.Certainly not on the scale we saw yesterday, where many places got up

:11:27. > :11:27.into the 20s, but even the mid-30s across parts of the South. What a
