:00:00. > :00:10.Here on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.
:00:11. > :00:15.Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.
:00:16. > :00:19.A specialist team is to take over the housing department
:00:20. > :00:22.at Kensington and Chelsea council following criticism of its response
:00:23. > :00:27.The Government says the task-force will include experts
:00:28. > :00:35.But opponents say its not enough - and they want to see Commissioners
:00:36. > :00:41.Here's our Political Editor, Tim Donovan.
:00:42. > :00:43.There are so many things to do, so much help needed,
:00:44. > :00:45.and not just for those in Grenfell Tower itself,
:00:46. > :00:55.This man owns a flat in the block overlooking the tower.
:00:56. > :00:58.He hasn't stayed there since the fire, where, he says,
:00:59. > :01:04.When you feel safe when you see people, high vis officials informing
:01:05. > :01:06.you, updating you what's going to happen, then
:01:07. > :01:09.And at the moment, who are you seeing?
:01:10. > :01:16.No detail yet about the new task force; how many people,
:01:17. > :01:19.who and where from, but we do now know this.
:01:20. > :01:22.The special focus of this recovery task force is going to be
:01:23. > :01:27.on housing, regeneration and community engagement.
:01:28. > :01:30.This seemed to one Conservative councillor in Kensington to be
:01:31. > :01:39.The focus is on helping people in North Kensington,
:01:40. > :01:42.not on issuing parking permits to people in Chelsea or whatever.
:01:43. > :01:44.It's about helping the people of North Kensington,
:01:45. > :01:46.that's where the resources should be concentrated.
:01:47. > :01:52.So I think this is absolutely the right thing to do.
:01:53. > :01:54.But Labour, including London's Mayor, argue it is not
:01:55. > :01:56.enough, wanting a full-blown team of commissioners to take
:01:57. > :01:59.over the whole council, well survivors say better
:02:00. > :02:07.If that's improved in the proper way, we shouldn't have many
:02:08. > :02:16.Because we're going to be linked, we're going to be one unit,
:02:17. > :02:20.the communication is going to be more clear.
:02:21. > :02:27.The councils face protest and criticism and with its own staff
:02:28. > :02:30.stretched to the limit, this looks like vital relief.
:02:31. > :02:32.You can't exist in an emergency situation for a very long time.
:02:33. > :02:35.If Kensington and Chelsea need assistance, in respect of being able
:02:36. > :02:38.to run business as usual and dealing with this disaster that
:02:39. > :02:40.has landed slap bang in the heart of their community
:02:41. > :02:42.in North Kensington, then that's absolutely
:02:43. > :02:44.the right thing to do they would need that support.
:02:45. > :02:47.There's no indication yet how long that support will be needed,
:02:48. > :02:49.but nothing after this looks like being easy.
:02:50. > :03:07.Well, earlier today, a building housing some offices -
:03:08. > :03:08.which neighbours Grenfell Tower - was evacuated.
:03:09. > :03:10.London Fire Brigade said there were concerns
:03:11. > :03:12.about Fire Exits being blocked - because they backed
:03:13. > :03:16.Some people working in the offices raised concerns about the length
:03:17. > :03:19.of time it's taken the authorities to come to today's decision.
:03:20. > :03:22.We were going about our normal daily business, saw some firemen doing
:03:23. > :03:25.We were then advised to immediately evacuate, urgently.
:03:26. > :03:27.Whilst outside, we spoke, a police officer spoke to me
:03:28. > :03:34.and explained that the fire brigade had made a recommendation three
:03:35. > :03:36.weeks ago, so the day after the fire, to the council
:03:37. > :03:39.that the building was not safe for commercial use,
:03:40. > :03:42.The rear fire escape is the crime scene.
:03:43. > :03:45.My concern is, not only have we been in there for three weeks,
:03:46. > :03:47.we've had clients, some from the tower, coming
:03:48. > :03:55.And another major development regarding Grenfell, which BBC London
:03:56. > :03:57.has discovered, is that more equipment
:03:58. > :04:00.could be on the way to help tackle future fires.
:04:01. > :04:03.Louisa Preston has more details.
:04:04. > :04:10.This could be a major addition for the London Fire Brigade. It could.
:04:11. > :04:13.You will remember during the night of that fire, we saw the shots of
:04:14. > :04:16.the fireman on those aerial platforms but they couldn't get high
:04:17. > :04:20.enough. That platform they were using on that night was actually
:04:21. > :04:25.borrowed from Surrey, which could reach 42 metres. Now questions have
:04:26. > :04:29.been asked since the fire, saying why doesn't London have the aerial
:04:30. > :04:33.platforms that can reach the heights the New York Fire Department can
:04:34. > :04:37.reach, 70 metres? BBC London has been to Finland where they have
:04:38. > :04:40.ladders of 100 metres, and our reporters were talking to
:04:41. > :04:45.manufacturers there, he said if they had ladders of 100 metres, it would
:04:46. > :04:48.have made a big difference. We know London Fire Brigade is considering
:04:49. > :04:52.higher aerial platforms as they are about to renew their fleet. It is
:04:53. > :04:57.something the Fire Commissioner spoke to us about a few days ago. We
:04:58. > :05:05.are fortunately just about to replace our aerial fleet, so as part
:05:06. > :05:07.of that we will look at the new technology that will allow us to
:05:08. > :05:10.have taller aerial platforms. The problem until now and London has
:05:11. > :05:13.been the streets are quite narrow, there is weight loading and machines
:05:14. > :05:16.are too big but now it will be one of our priorities. There seems to be
:05:17. > :05:21.some movement on that as well? Yes, the Fire Commissioner and the Mayor
:05:22. > :05:24.of London met last on Wednesday, and he has more or less said to her,
:05:25. > :05:29.tell me what you need. Basically draw up a list. So an incident by
:05:30. > :05:34.Grenfell can never happen again and she has done that, we are being
:05:35. > :05:38.told. On that list consists three aerial platforms. They are not
:05:39. > :05:42.cheap, it is a hefty price tag between 2.5- ?3 million and that no
:05:43. > :05:46.one have to go to the government for that money. I've asked the London
:05:47. > :05:50.Fire Brigade Commissioner to do an urgent review of what else she
:05:51. > :05:54.thinks we need is a Fire Service in London to make sure we can deal with
:05:55. > :05:57.fires and tower blocks. That will mean additional resources from
:05:58. > :06:00.central government to pay for the additional equipment the London Fire
:06:01. > :06:03.Brigade needs. What are the chances of getting that money? Many would
:06:04. > :06:07.say this is a time to make that argument. I think many would be
:06:08. > :06:10.extremely astonished if London Fire Brigade to get the money to provide
:06:11. > :06:13.the equipment that they so desperately need. A lot of people
:06:14. > :06:16.will have their eyes on what happens there. Thank you for that, Louisa.
:06:17. > :06:24.This programme has seen figures which show reported
:06:25. > :06:26.acid attacks in London have more than doubled - since 2014.
:06:27. > :06:29.One of the latest was in Beckton, as two cousins sat in
:06:30. > :06:31.a car at traffic lights, with the window down.
:06:32. > :06:33.Police are treating it as a hate crime,
:06:34. > :06:36.and it's heightened fears in the Asian and Muslim
:06:37. > :06:39.And a warning, that some viewers may find images
:06:40. > :06:44.Two cousins out celebrating a birthday.
:06:45. > :06:50.She was sitting in a car with her cousin, Jameel,
:06:51. > :06:55.when acid was sprayed into their faces.
:06:56. > :06:59.This shocking attack two weeks ago is being treated as a hate crime.
:07:00. > :07:03.I can't sleep, I keep thinking this guy's going to come for me.
:07:04. > :07:08.There's no reason why this wouldn't be racially motivated.
:07:09. > :07:10.And ever since, has some in the Muslim and Asian
:07:11. > :07:14.So many acid attacks occurring in London recently,
:07:15. > :07:20.People can get hold of acid and attack people so, so easily.
:07:21. > :07:29.Police are investigating a suspected acid attack
:07:30. > :07:31.here in Mile End, where two people were taken to hospital.
:07:32. > :07:34.The motivation of that attack is unknown, but it appears to be
:07:35. > :07:40.It does make me worried, because I heard this on Facebook,
:07:41. > :07:43.Whatsapp, Muslim people are getting attacked, they are being acid
:07:44. > :07:47.I do feel scared sometimes, to go outside, because
:07:48. > :07:53.People can go around me and they can throw acid on me.
:07:54. > :07:58.Young people like us don't feel safe to go
:07:59. > :08:00.out in London any more, because of things,
:08:01. > :08:05.Overall, acid attacks have risen year-on-year.
:08:06. > :08:07.In 2014-2015, 188 people were injured as a result
:08:08. > :08:17.The following financial year it increased to 317.
:08:18. > :08:23.And up until April this year, it jumped again to 398.
:08:24. > :08:26.There seems to be a right and it's prevalent to East London,
:08:27. > :08:31.The perception that it's being used more and more in hate crime,
:08:32. > :08:35.I have no evidence to suggest that it's used
:08:36. > :08:40.I've not seen that as an increase, and I would say if anybody
:08:41. > :08:46.believes that's the case, then they need to tell us.
:08:47. > :08:50.Sarmad Ismail set up a petition, calling for more restrictions
:08:51. > :08:56.on household products which can be used in such attacks.
:08:57. > :09:00.Just like family members being attacked, so hopefully try
:09:01. > :09:08.and get some letters sent to some MPs, they will debate it
:09:09. > :09:11.in Parliament, try and get a law put in place or some sort of deterrent
:09:12. > :09:14.and then see a crackdown on the purchase of corrosive substances.
:09:15. > :09:18.The hard evidence doesn't show a rise in acid being used in hate
:09:19. > :09:20.crimes, but the perception after this attack is
:09:21. > :09:37.Finally tonight, transport for London has launched a new map to
:09:38. > :09:40.help people with claustrophobia and anxiety. The map will help them to
:09:41. > :09:43.navigate the network more comfortably by showing brutes with
:09:44. > :09:46.fewer tunnels and also highlight which services are in tunnels.
:09:47. > :09:49.That's it for now from me, but lets find out what the weathers
:09:50. > :09:57.It has been a lovely day to day weather-wise.
:09:58. > :10:03.Yes, it was gorgeous. Temperatures got up to 30 degrees at both
:10:04. > :10:07.Heathrow and Surrey. More of the same coming up over the next few
:10:08. > :10:12.days. But, for some of us we might see some of these in the next 24
:10:13. > :10:16.hours, so it won't be entirely dry. Overnight tonight, 23 degrees at the
:10:17. > :10:20.moment outside. Those temperatures low to fall so another warm nights
:10:21. > :10:24.sleeping. Later in the night we could start to see a few
:10:25. > :10:28.thunderstorms move up from the north of France, moving across the forced
:10:29. > :10:31.if the storms arrive in the morning it might be they don't have a huge
:10:32. > :10:35.amount of rain. Not everyone will see a storm and there will be some
:10:36. > :10:38.warm weather, it will feel hot and humid once again through the
:10:39. > :10:43.afternoon, temperatures up to 30 degrees. I would say, if we see some
:10:44. > :10:46.storms breaking out late in the day towards evening, they could be
:10:47. > :10:49.torrential, but we think they will develop to the north-east of our
:10:50. > :10:53.area. Looking at Friday, either way it looks like the weather will
:10:54. > :10:58.become dry for everyone with plenty of sunshine. A familiar picture with
:10:59. > :11:01.temperatures and the high 20s or low 30s. It looks like this hot weather
:11:02. > :11:03.will last at least into the first part of the weekend as well.
:11:04. > :11:06.will last at least into the first part of the weekend as well.
:11:07. > :11:13.Temperatures should get up to about 28 on Saturday. That is the weather.
:11:14. > :11:17.Good evening, I expect the Dave met or exceeded your July expectations
:11:18. > :11:21.because it looked for the most part a bit like that in the southern
:11:22. > :11:25.isles. One of the great parts would be it was 30 degrees in the London
:11:26. > :11:31.area, or just about. Further north, 13 under quite a banner of cloud. We
:11:32. > :11:32.don't care how arty you get with your weather
