:00:00. > :00:12.Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.
:00:13. > :00:17.Good evening from BBC London News. I'm Victoria Hollins.
:00:18. > :00:19.A row has broken out over the route of this year's
:00:20. > :00:23.Notting Hill Carnival, following the Grenfell Tower fire.
:00:24. > :00:25.The parade passes within metres of the disaster.
:00:26. > :00:31.The Minister for London has questioned whether
:00:32. > :00:36.But Mayor Sadiq Khan says the carnival belongs on the streets
:00:37. > :00:39.of its Notting Hill birthplace, as Karl Mercer reports.
:00:40. > :00:42.For the last seven years, this is how Linton Mitchell has
:00:43. > :00:46.Getting warmed up for Carnival, 2017.
:00:47. > :00:52.Like others around Notting Hill, though, he woke to
:00:53. > :00:55.news this morning that the Minister for London has asked for Carnival to
:00:56. > :00:58.be moved this year after the Grenfell Tower fire.
:00:59. > :01:01.He says that news has already upset many.
:01:02. > :01:07.Most people are actually saying, they are going to stop the Carnival.
:01:08. > :01:10.That to me is triggering off, exciting, more
:01:11. > :01:14.or less, discomfort between the community.
:01:15. > :01:21.The row started after Minister for London
:01:22. > :01:41.Greg Hands wrote to the mayor, saying:.
:01:42. > :01:43.Sadly, neither man was available to be
:01:44. > :01:47.interviewed today but the local MP was not pulling her punches.
:01:48. > :01:50.Why on earth should yet another white man in a suit
:01:51. > :01:54.have any idea about what is good for this community, who is grieving,
:01:55. > :02:00.And actually, they decide what is right and what is
:02:01. > :02:02.wrong at the moment, not us, not me, either.
:02:03. > :02:06.At the scene today, there were mixed views over whether
:02:07. > :02:10.Carnival is one of the greatest things,
:02:11. > :02:15.I think it should go ahead and celebrate life.
:02:16. > :02:17.I don't think the people that have lost their lives
:02:18. > :02:23.would have liked for that to be cancelled.
:02:24. > :02:33.A lot of people died and maybe we should respect the area.
:02:34. > :02:36.Pepe Francis is chair of Carnival and not planning to follow
:02:37. > :02:41.That is not... That has never been a consideration.
:02:42. > :02:44.We support the whole, the people from Grenfell Tower.
:02:45. > :02:46.Tonight, a statement from Kensington and
:02:47. > :02:49.Chelsea Council said there were no plans to move carnival this year.
:02:50. > :02:58.The Prime Minister Theresa May says plans for a statue
:02:59. > :03:01.of Margaret Thatcher outside the Houses of Parliament should not
:03:02. > :03:04.be blocked simply because of fears that it might be defaced.
:03:05. > :03:06.A planning application for a ten-foot statue has been
:03:07. > :03:22.Parliament Square is home to about 11 statues, all political figures,
:03:23. > :03:27.although as yet there have been no women. There are plans for
:03:28. > :03:32.suffragists Millicent Fawcett to be featured. Margaret Thatcher would be
:03:33. > :03:37.a ten foot high bronze statue, worth about ?300,000. It is a popular idea
:03:38. > :03:40.with prominent Conservative politicians but the Royal Parks, who
:03:41. > :03:45.own the square, have objected because they have said they're not
:03:46. > :03:49.yet assurances that her family approve of it. Also, a local
:03:50. > :03:52.residents and business Association has edge was very significant, of
:03:53. > :03:57.course, as the first female Prime Minister but was also controversial
:03:58. > :03:58.enough to vandalism. This is the suggestion that the current PM
:03:59. > :04:00.rejects. I understand there are a number
:04:01. > :04:03.of issues that have been raised around the statue but what I'm very
:04:04. > :04:06.clear about is that there is no, there should be no suggestion
:04:07. > :04:09.that the threat of vandalism should stop a statue of Margaret Thatcher
:04:10. > :04:19.from being put up. So how real is the risk of
:04:20. > :04:21.vandalism? It is a very public space and lots of protests have gone
:04:22. > :04:26.through there. A few years ago, the Winston Churchill statue was defaced
:04:27. > :04:29.during anti-capitalist demonstrations but the final
:04:30. > :04:32.decision rests with Westminster council. We will await the decision.
:04:33. > :04:35.A ten-year regeneration project has seen the transformation
:04:36. > :04:38.of the waterways around the Olympic stadium.
:04:39. > :04:41.Welcome to the Bow Back Rivers, London's newest waterway.
:04:42. > :04:44.1.5 miles of previously unnavigable canals.
:04:45. > :04:46.Ten years ago, you would have had tyres in here, fridges,
:04:47. > :04:53.washing machines, full of industrial pollutants and now, look
:04:54. > :04:58.Part of the scheme is to reinstate these reedbeds
:04:59. > :05:05.We have created all of this reedbed habitat in several areas
:05:06. > :05:12.That has allowed species to flourish.
:05:13. > :05:14.We will see here, coots, moorhens, kingfishers,
:05:15. > :05:17.all the kind of animals that are a sign of a healthy waterway.
:05:18. > :05:20.Before the Olympics, this is what the area looked like.
:05:21. > :05:24.Long before that, the canals were used to deliver to local industry.
:05:25. > :05:27.This project has taken ten years to get this far
:05:28. > :05:33.What it means is you can now loop right around
:05:34. > :05:40.Raymond Lyons has lived on his longboat for about a year.
:05:41. > :05:46.We love living on the canal and we have docked up
:05:47. > :05:52.So I can see there's an interest value to be going around
:05:53. > :05:54.the Bow Back waters and stuff which have been
:05:55. > :05:59.We want you to come here, we want you to cruise through,
:06:00. > :06:02.we want you to admire the wildlife that has returned to the park.
:06:03. > :06:05.We want you to enjoy the views of London Stadium.
:06:06. > :06:10.As well as boat owners, tours will now use these waterways
:06:11. > :06:13.to also witness London's rediscovered industrial heritage.
:06:14. > :06:25.Apologies for the slightly premature start to that report.
:06:26. > :06:29.That's it for now from me, but let's find out what the weather's up
:06:30. > :06:38.Thank you and good evening. Today, another scorcher, we hit 30 Celsius
:06:39. > :06:41.at London Heathrow which made it the seventh day so far this summer we
:06:42. > :06:47.have got above 30 degrees. Some summers don't get anywhere near it.
:06:48. > :06:51.At the moment out there, it remains humid and tonight, temperatures not
:06:52. > :06:55.dropping much lower than around 18 Celsius, maybe 19 or 20 in parts of
:06:56. > :06:59.Essex and Kent. A lot more clouds tomorrow with a bit of light rain or
:07:00. > :07:04.drizzle around first thing but I think by and large, it will be a dry
:07:05. > :07:07.day with only a small chance of a light, passing shower. Light winds
:07:08. > :07:11.but cooler than we have seen in recent days, temperatures down on
:07:12. > :07:16.what they were today, certainly, may be low to mid 20s at the very best.
:07:17. > :07:19.We finished tomorrow evening with one or two showers still around but
:07:20. > :07:24.the skies will start to show a few more breaks as we go into Sunday. If
:07:25. > :07:28.we take a look at the outlook, Sunday, largely dry, probably a bit
:07:29. > :07:31.more sunshine and warming up a touch again but by Monday and into
:07:32. > :07:33.Tuesday, it will feel cooler and there will be a greater chance of a
:07:34. > :07:36.few showers. If there will be a greater chance of a
:07:37. > :07:38.few showers. If you've got any plans further afield, Philip has the full
:07:39. > :07:46.details. Hello and good evening, contrasting
:07:47. > :07:49.fortunes across the British Isles again today, a weather front across
:07:50. > :07:52.the North, the odd bit and peace offering putting a dent in the
:07:53. > :07:56.temperatures in the central belt, further south, not for the first
:07:57. > :07:59.time recently, we hit 30 degrees again at Heathrow. Overnight, that
:08:00. > :08:03.weather front will ease a bit further south with no great rush,
:08:04. > :08:07.quite a bit of cloud across England and Wales and as warm as ever hear.
:08:08. > :08:14.Further north, underneath clearing skies, temperatures could dip for
:08:15. > :08:16.some into single figures but as I say, further south again, another
:08:17. > :08:19.night of 15, 16, 17 or 18. The weekend starts fairly cloudy with
:08:20. > :08:23.bits and pieces of rain on the breeze across South Wales and
:08:24. > :08:26.south-west England, generally cloudy here. Writers got anywhere from
:08:27. > :08:29.North Wales, North Midlands northwards although you will notice
:08:30. > :08:32.another weather front close by in the North West of Scotland but it's
