:00:00. > :00:13.I'm Asad Ahmad. for the news where you are.

:00:14. > :00:16.An area of London has become the first place in the country

:00:17. > :00:19.where shopkeepers are signing up to a voluntary scheme

:00:20. > :00:23.restricting the sale of corrosive substances like acid

:00:24. > :00:29.It's aimed at addressing the current rise in acid attacks.

:00:30. > :00:33.But Londoners are also being told that their role

:00:34. > :00:36.if they see someone sprayed with a substance can be crucial.

:00:37. > :00:41.With details of what to do, here's Marc Ashdown.

:00:42. > :00:43.Video footage released by police today after an acid

:00:44. > :00:50.They want to trace these two men on the moped.

:00:51. > :00:53.They threw a corrosive substance in the face of a pedestrian.

:00:54. > :00:56.He suffered minor burns, mainly because a passer-by

:00:57. > :01:05.He just started squeezing it in our faces...

:01:06. > :01:08.In June, Jameel Mukhtar and his cousin suffered a random

:01:09. > :01:17.Specialist burns units like this one in Chelsea and Westminster have seen

:01:18. > :01:19.in recent months, reflecting police figures.

:01:20. > :01:21.Now surgeons are calling for more public awareness.

:01:22. > :01:27.Witnesses can play a crucial role in minimising long-term damage.

:01:28. > :01:28.The danger is relatively superficial.

:01:29. > :01:34.Usually, it can be treated just with dressings.

:01:35. > :01:36.But if the injury is of such a severity to damage

:01:37. > :01:42.surgery will be necessary and the use of skin grafts,

:01:43. > :01:44.and therefore, the need to inform the patient

:01:45. > :01:46.that there will be permanent marks or scarring

:01:47. > :01:50.But quick first aid reduces the chances of that?

:01:51. > :02:09.The first thing you should do is dial 999.

:02:10. > :02:12.Delivery driver Javed Hussain was attacked three weeks ago.

:02:13. > :02:15.I was really scared. I didn't know what to do.

:02:16. > :02:23.Drivers have become so scared that Deliveroo has

:02:24. > :02:26.improved security measures and is trialling helmet cameras.

:02:27. > :02:30.It's thought acid is being used in attacks

:02:31. > :02:33.because it's easy to get hold of, and legislation is much looser

:02:34. > :02:35.than rules surrounding possession of a knife.

:02:36. > :02:38.Shopkeepers in Hackney are signing up to a voluntary scheme to restrict

:02:39. > :02:42.the sale of products containing ammonia and acid.

:02:43. > :02:45.It's the first of its kind, and it is backed by the council.

:02:46. > :02:48.They'll be asking for identification and refusing to sell these kind

:02:49. > :02:52.of products to anyone under the age of 21.

:02:53. > :02:56.They'll also be reporting any suspicious sales.

:02:57. > :02:59.Police say there are far fewer acid attacks than knife crime and people

:03:00. > :03:03.But being properly prepared to help could

:03:04. > :03:12.The police watchdog has tonight been forced to reveal more details

:03:13. > :03:15.surrounding the death of a black man who died after being restrained

:03:16. > :03:23.Rashan Charles died last month leading to anger in the area.

:03:24. > :03:25.Our reporter Tolu Adeoye has the details.

:03:26. > :03:35.Rashan Charles died on the 22nd of July. He was followed by police

:03:36. > :03:39.officers into a shop. He put an object in his mouth and later lost

:03:40. > :03:43.his life. His death led the protests, one of which was quite

:03:44. > :03:47.violent. The police faced criticism over how they dealt with the

:03:48. > :03:52.incident. Yesterday, the IPCC said an item removed from his mouth was

:03:53. > :03:56.not a controlled substance. The BBC understood that to mean it was not

:03:57. > :04:07.an illegal drug or a so-called league high, but no other

:04:08. > :04:09.information was given. But today, the IPCC revealed that the package

:04:10. > :04:11.he swallowed consist of a mixture of paracetamol and caffeine wrapped in

:04:12. > :04:14.plastic. This was information they did not want to give us, but they

:04:15. > :04:16.said they had given the information because of pressure. The

:04:17. > :04:17.Commissioner overseeing the investigation explained why in this

:04:18. > :04:49.statement. At this stage, we still do know what

:04:50. > :04:54.led to Rashan Charles's death. The postmortem results are pending. But

:04:55. > :04:57.the IPCC will look to reassure the public by giving out more

:04:58. > :04:59.information and put to bed some of the speculation. Thank you for that

:05:00. > :05:00.update. The mother of Sally Anne Bowman -

:05:01. > :05:05.who was raped and murdered in Croydon over a decade ago -

:05:06. > :05:08.says her daughter's remains have been exhumed after her grave

:05:09. > :05:09.was repeatedly desecrated. Linda Bowman told a newspaper that

:05:10. > :05:12."cruel people" had targeted the She said they'd covered the grave

:05:13. > :05:17.in dirt and dead flowers Fire safety work carried

:05:18. > :05:26.out at a block of flats in Camden has been described

:05:27. > :05:29.by an independent fire safety expert as being nothing more

:05:30. > :05:33.than "a tart up and a cover up". His concerns reflect those felt

:05:34. > :05:36.by many residents who feel "unsafe" after emergency work was carried out

:05:37. > :05:40.following the Grenfell Tower fire. Camden Council argue

:05:41. > :05:42.the work has been properly approved and signed off,

:05:43. > :05:48.as Frankie McCamley reports. This door, they've

:05:49. > :05:56.just put these on. Lulu lives on the 17th floor

:05:57. > :06:02.of Taplow Tower on the Chalcots estate with her two children

:06:03. > :06:05.and is staying in a hotel because she says she's too

:06:06. > :06:07.scared to come back here. I have two young children

:06:08. > :06:09.aged one and four. How am I going to be able

:06:10. > :06:14.to concentrate on their safety? I'm going to be a nervous

:06:15. > :06:16.wreck the whole time. After the building was evacuated,

:06:17. > :06:19.the council added a fire door closer to her front door

:06:20. > :06:21.to make it safe. That's meant to make

:06:22. > :06:30.my door slam shut. Fire wardens have been placed

:06:31. > :06:53.on every floor of the towers but despite this, another

:06:54. > :06:56.who lives on the ground but despite this, another who lives

:06:57. > :07:00.on the ground floor says she doesn't It's meant to be some

:07:01. > :07:11.sort of material, As you can see, the wires

:07:12. > :07:18.are just left stuck in. It makes me feel like

:07:19. > :07:23.like my landlord doesn't An independent fire safety

:07:24. > :07:26.expert has been carrying out his own assessment of some

:07:27. > :07:29.of the flats. But more work still needs to be

:07:30. > :07:32.done, Camden Council insisted but crucially, I didn't ask anyone

:07:33. > :07:42.to move back to those blocks until I'd heard from the fire

:07:43. > :07:45.brigade who are on site The removal of the cladding

:07:46. > :07:49.from the blocks will begin in the coming months,

:07:50. > :07:51.but restoring trust in the council One of London's oldest pie

:07:52. > :07:57.and mash shops, which has survived two world wars,

:07:58. > :07:59.looks to be staring defeat in the face -

:08:00. > :08:03.which comes in the form It's in Chapel Market in Islington -

:08:04. > :08:07.and there's no shortage of customers Nicola Ford has been

:08:08. > :08:11.to meet some of them before The green is the liquor

:08:12. > :08:20.and you've got the potato, and the puff pastry pie,

:08:21. > :08:31.and it's delicious. It's a lunchtime rush at Manze's

:08:32. > :08:34.on Chapel Market, but customers had better be quick,

:08:35. > :08:37.as the shop is due to close. I'm 88 now, so that's 80

:08:38. > :08:41.years of pie and mash, and I don't think they should

:08:42. > :08:43.close it down. The owners say a recent rise

:08:44. > :08:49.in business rates are to blame, where in Islington, rates on average

:08:50. > :08:51.have gone up by 45%, something that is causing local

:08:52. > :08:56.business groups concern. For me what's sad is that this

:08:57. > :08:59.is the bloodline of the community. Chapel market, the independent

:09:00. > :09:01.businesses here, they create It's a focal point, it's

:09:02. > :09:04.a place people know, it's a place where people

:09:05. > :09:06.come to visit. It's a community,

:09:07. > :09:08.families come down... It's part of Islington, it always

:09:09. > :09:10.has been, and once that goes, it's another small part of Islington

:09:11. > :09:18.that's broken up, I'm afraid. Anyone moving into the borough has

:09:19. > :09:21.got to have money now. And that's fine, it's lovely,

:09:22. > :09:23.but I mean, the kind of things... They're not pie and mash

:09:24. > :09:26.kind of people, not Manze's is opening another

:09:27. > :09:30.restaurant in Essex, where there is still a market

:09:31. > :09:33.for pie and mash, but what about We weren't originally going to come

:09:34. > :09:41.here, we were going to go down the road, but this one

:09:42. > :09:43.was recommended to me, The council say they are happy

:09:44. > :09:48.to discuss with the owner if they can help to keep the shop

:09:49. > :09:51.open, and say they'd be extremely As it stands, the last pie will be

:09:52. > :09:56.served at the end of the year. That's it for now from me, but let's

:09:57. > :10:10.find out what the weather's up to A better day than yesterday, but

:10:11. > :10:15.windy? Indeed, a real pie and mash day. These trees, I suspect, were

:10:16. > :10:23.rocking and rolling. For some, it did shower. Not a cold start, and

:10:24. > :10:27.the wind is less noticeable than was the case today. A dry enough start

:10:28. > :10:31.for the early morning commute, and I think we will get most of you

:10:32. > :10:37.through the morning dry. But there is a chance of one or two showers,

:10:38. > :10:41.rather like today. Top temperature feeling more like 23, given that

:10:42. > :10:47.there will not be as much wind as I was today. There will be fewer

:10:48. > :10:51.showers as the evening goes on. As we get into the weekend, the low

:10:52. > :10:57.pressure which has driven the weather so far today, moves away. We

:10:58. > :11:01.have hope that Saturday could be a dry affair for many. A bright start

:11:02. > :11:04.on Sunday. Then more clubs billing in from the west.
