:00:14. > :00:20.First tonight, nine Londoners dead in seven years,

:00:21. > :00:23.all killed in fires caused by white goods.

:00:24. > :00:25.The deaths have prompted the Mayor and London's Fire Commissioner

:00:26. > :00:27.to demand the Government introduce new safety measures,

:00:28. > :00:33.The Grenfell Tower fire is believed to have started

:00:34. > :00:43.And a year ago, a fire at a tower block in Shepherd's Bush

:00:44. > :00:47.Our Political Correspondent Karl Mercer reports.

:00:48. > :00:50.Shepherd's Bush a year ago, and a fire on the eighth

:00:51. > :00:52.floor of a tower block, caused by a faulty tumble drier.

:00:53. > :00:55.No-one died in the fire, but this was what was left

:00:56. > :01:00.Chantal Froelich lives two doors along, and like neighbours,

:01:01. > :01:03.spent three months out of her flat after the fire, which she'd seen

:01:04. > :01:10.I could see it was kind of around my floor area but didn't

:01:11. > :01:16.I was just a horrible, horrible feeling.

:01:17. > :01:18.It was chaos out there, police and fire, and people just

:01:19. > :01:22.going crazy because the shopping centre was being evacuated.

:01:23. > :01:24.This was the tumble drier blamed for the fire,

:01:25. > :01:28.which led to calls from London's fire brigade for more to be done

:01:29. > :01:36.to highlight the potential dangers of faulty white goods.

:01:37. > :01:38.It's thought the Grenfell Tower fire was started after problems

:01:39. > :01:42.The brigade wants the Government to set up a simple website

:01:43. > :01:44.where people can get information about their white goods.

:01:45. > :01:47.I don't think it is an unreasonable ask to have a central point

:01:48. > :01:50.where a member of the public can check to see if their product

:01:51. > :01:53.is safe and it means they are going to be safe

:01:54. > :01:56.Grenfell Tower aside, the brigade says nine people have

:01:57. > :01:59.died from fires blamed on faulty white goods in the last seven years.

:02:00. > :02:03.On average, it goes to one fire a day blamed on them.

:02:04. > :02:05.Nine people have lost their lives where there have

:02:06. > :02:11.There are people in London who have got some of those now.

:02:12. > :02:14.Lawyers representing Chantal and others affected

:02:15. > :02:16.by the Shepherd's Bush fire have backed the fire brigade's call.

:02:17. > :02:20.We need a complete shake-up of the product recall system in the UK.

:02:21. > :02:22.We are talking about the risk of fire equalling

:02:23. > :02:25.This is an important issue for consumers

:02:26. > :02:32.We are living with ticking time bombs and it is not fair.

:02:33. > :02:34.You are playing with people's lives and you guys need

:02:35. > :02:37.to pull your fingers out and do something ASAP, really.

:02:38. > :02:40.The Government said it did have a website up and running

:02:41. > :02:42.that people could use to find out if their white goods

:02:43. > :02:50.It also said it would respond to the fire brigade's letter.

:02:51. > :02:52.As we heard in Karl's report, a series of recommendations

:02:53. > :02:56.Our reporter Jim Wheble is here with more on this.

:02:57. > :03:00.And, Jim, it was consumer champion and former Watchdog

:03:01. > :03:02.presenter Lynn Faulds Woods who headed up a review

:03:03. > :03:16.That's right, Lynn Faulds Woods was invited by the Government to do this

:03:17. > :03:20.report and she made nine recommendations but frankly she

:03:21. > :03:23.feels a bit ignored by the Government. Two of the

:03:24. > :03:31.recommendations she felt particularly important, one hasn't

:03:32. > :03:37.happened and the other she is not very impressed with, as she

:03:38. > :03:41.explains. I did a very simple review because the Government said to me

:03:42. > :03:46.there's no money and we don't want new laws so the first thing I wanted

:03:47. > :03:55.was somebody to be in charge officially, and I quietly said to

:03:56. > :04:01.them, why don't you appoint a tsar that you can get rid of if you don't

:04:02. > :04:06.like but at least they can start the job. I wanted them to look at doing

:04:07. > :04:13.something along those lines but obviously cheaper. Then we wanted a

:04:14. > :04:16.website, where people can find things, an official government

:04:17. > :04:22.backed website, and what they have come up with so far makes it clear

:04:23. > :04:25.to the public it's just a portal, appointing portal to various

:04:26. > :04:34.websites. People that speak to me haven't been able to find it. What's

:04:35. > :04:38.the Government saying? We have a statement from Margot James saying

:04:39. > :04:41.it's the Government's top priority to keep people safe, there is a new

:04:42. > :04:47.website which makes it clear what is safe, and they are looking at a

:04:48. > :04:54.national body to support consumers. And what about those consumers? What

:04:55. > :05:02.advice for them? Unplug your faulty machine, don't use it, but frankly

:05:03. > :05:11.something with a fridge freezer it is not practical to switch it off if

:05:12. > :05:17.you are not home. There is a website, as Lynn mentioned, which

:05:18. > :05:21.you can see at the bottom of your screens now. You.

:05:22. > :05:23.Transport for London is investigating footage of a bus

:05:24. > :05:26.appearing to move onto a busy road without a driver, after BBC London

:05:27. > :05:30.It was all filmed by a camera on a cabbie's dashboard.

:05:31. > :05:31.Our Transport Correspondent Tom Edwards has been

:05:32. > :05:37.Marylebone Road early on Sunday morning.

:05:38. > :05:39.This is the footage from a black cab's dashboard camera.

:05:40. > :05:42.You can hear him talking to his passenger when this happens.

:05:43. > :05:44.A bus mounts the curb and pulls out into the road,

:05:45. > :05:54.Then, from the side, the driver jumps behind the steering

:05:55. > :06:02.He then reverses it off the road and waves at the cab.

:06:03. > :06:07.The whole incident in total lasts five seconds.

:06:08. > :06:10.It looks like there is just one other passenger on board

:06:11. > :06:12.and the driver stops the bus just before it hits the

:06:13. > :06:17.Buses and bus driving have been under the spotlight recently

:06:18. > :06:23.This was a crash on Lavender Hill in Battersea.

:06:24. > :06:26.And a London Assembly report found high levels of stress and long

:06:27. > :06:27.shifts amongst drivers, and London's bus safety record

:06:28. > :06:35.does not compare well to other world cities.

:06:36. > :06:41.It's not clear yet why this incident involving the 453 bus happened.

:06:42. > :06:43.Transport for London have asked the bus operator Go-Ahead

:06:44. > :06:49.No-one was hurt in the incident, but this will again focus attention

:06:50. > :07:00.There was a time when there was a thriving local newspaper

:07:01. > :07:04.but with the advent of online news many are struggling or have

:07:05. > :07:07.But as Sarah Harris reports, London Assembly research suggests it

:07:08. > :07:18.may not be all bad news for local print journalism.

:07:19. > :07:23.Some see it as an endangered art when it

:07:24. > :07:26.comes to a local press in London in decline,

:07:27. > :07:27.but here in the city, is

:07:28. > :07:38.A local newsroom covering stories 7500 residents over a square mile.

:07:39. > :07:41.And growing from week to week since launching, last year.

:07:42. > :07:44.London is one big community, but within that, you have many other

:07:45. > :07:49.It is going back to people wanting to know what is

:07:50. > :07:51.going on in their area, Fleet Street obviously

:07:52. > :07:55.being in our patch has given us a great platform from which to jump

:07:56. > :08:02.A London assembly report showed that circulation across London over

:08:03. > :08:08.One North London paper's readership was cut by 90% even though

:08:09. > :08:13.the number of publications and online local news has gone up.

:08:14. > :08:16.The author of the reporters calling for more investment,

:08:17. > :08:28.like the scheme run by the BBC funding dozens of local journalists.

:08:29. > :08:32.To make sure those important meetings that can be quite dry

:08:33. > :08:35.at local council level still get journalists going along to,

:08:36. > :08:38.so the BBC puts resources into funding media read a newspaper

:08:39. > :08:40.level that people would not be aware.

:08:41. > :08:43.Those at the sharp end keeping local papers going with much less funding

:08:44. > :08:49.think it needs an image overhaul, making what may appear rather dull

:08:50. > :08:51.as serving an important role in holding local

:08:52. > :08:59.Pre-Grenfell, all the discussions about fire safety

:09:00. > :09:01.and the way buildings were built and material checks,

:09:02. > :09:18.people thought it may be boring and irrelevant,

:09:19. > :09:19.the fact that no-one was covering that

:09:20. > :09:23.so there is still a good argument to keep the printer is going

:09:24. > :09:26.And this success story shows there is still an appetite

:09:27. > :09:28.for an imprinted version of what is happening

:09:29. > :09:32.That's it for now from me, but let's find out what the weather's up

:09:33. > :09:42.And another disappointing summer 's day.

:09:43. > :09:48.Yes, but at least across America for the total eclipse there was a

:09:49. > :09:52.beautiful blue skies, lucky them. We had a lot of low cloud and it didn't

:09:53. > :09:56.really cheer up through the afternoon, but there is hope for

:09:57. > :10:02.tomorrow. As usual on Monday night we are going to look at the weather

:10:03. > :10:07.for the week ahead. It will be among key start, fresher later, a lot of

:10:08. > :10:14.dry weather around with sunshine at times. But overnight it will be

:10:15. > :10:25.cloudy again, there could be drizzle as the temperature

:10:26. > :10:31.drops. We have a change in wind direction coming in from the

:10:32. > :10:36.south-east, so we are more likely to see the cloud in and break tomorrow.

:10:37. > :10:41.In the sunshine we could be looking at temperatures up to 26 degrees so

:10:42. > :10:45.lovely afternoon. By the end of the day it will start to feel cooler so

:10:46. > :10:50.the highest temperatures will probably be through the morning.

:10:51. > :10:57.There will be sunshine around as well, likewise on Thursday. The

:10:58. > :11:01.possibility of some showers. For the weekend at the moment the forecast

:11:02. > :11:02.looks uncertain so stay tuned for the details but it

:11:03. > :11:04.looks uncertain so stay tuned for the details but it looks like a

:11:05. > :11:39.promising start. Misty weather conditions will be the

:11:40. > :11:43.story as we go through the night. A murky night through England and

:11:44. > :11:46.Wales with low cloud and missed. The rain band continuing to trundle

:11:47. > :11:50.north-east across Scotland for much of the night. It will be a mild
