:00:32. > :00:33.knife outside his school in Willesden has been
:00:34. > :00:35.locked up for at least 14 years for his murder.
:00:36. > :00:37.Quamari's parents said he loved school and his life
:00:38. > :00:40.Alex Bushill has been speaking to them.
:00:41. > :00:43.Quamari Barnes was just 15 and on his way home
:00:44. > :00:45.when he was stabbed to death outside his school.
:00:46. > :00:47.He was clearly adored by his many friends,
:00:48. > :00:50.some of whom he had just shared a class with.
:00:51. > :00:53.His killer, another schoolboy of the same age.
:00:54. > :01:02.I've got more disbelief that someone so young could do something so bad.
:01:03. > :01:08.Her son was a pupil at the Capital City Academy in Willesden,
:01:09. > :01:10.and it was outside these school gates his many friends
:01:11. > :01:12.came to remember him, and through these school gates
:01:13. > :01:18.Back in January, as he left school, Quamari walked up Doyle Gardens.
:01:19. > :01:20.Waiting here on the corner was his assailant.
:01:21. > :01:22.Quamari recognised him, turned on his heels and ran
:01:23. > :01:28.Moments later, he was stabbed in broad daylight and in
:01:29. > :01:32.CCTV caught the moment his attacker fled, dressed in black and armed
:01:33. > :01:39.Later in hospital, as Quamari lay dying, he was able to whisper
:01:40. > :01:44.And to this day, I cannot reveal his name because of
:01:45. > :01:51.The judge at the Old Bailey today sentenced the defendant to a minimum
:01:52. > :01:53.of 14 years detention at Her Majesty's pleasure.
:01:54. > :01:56.He said the restrictions on revealing his identity
:01:57. > :01:58.would not be lifted, because there is the chance
:01:59. > :02:04.What no one in court expected was for the defendant
:02:05. > :02:09.to suddenly confess, but he did just minutes before
:02:10. > :02:14.The judge removed two years of his jail term as a result.
:02:15. > :02:16.Outside court, Quamari's family were not impressed.
:02:17. > :02:19.Personally, I think he was grabbing at straws,
:02:20. > :02:27.It was last ditch, trying to save his own bacon.
:02:28. > :02:31.As for motive, nobody really knows why Quamari was stabbed.
:02:32. > :02:34.His attacker has only said he was acting out of anger.
:02:35. > :02:36.He had been looking for another boy who he had quarrelled
:02:37. > :02:39.with the night before, which is why Quamari's mother has
:02:40. > :02:44.You should be aware of what your child is doing.
:02:45. > :02:48.I know a lot of people work, but maybe the community,
:02:49. > :02:52.we all need to take an active role in how kids are being looked
:02:53. > :02:54.after and not just left to get on with whatever
:02:55. > :02:58.That's why for her this was an act of violence
:02:59. > :03:02.that was as casual as it was fatal, and it cost her her son.

:03:48. > :03:51.uniform, as "A lovely little lad", and says he's got no idea why anyone
:03:52. > :03:54.would want to kill them. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the same
:03:55. > :03:58.incident and he received what have been described as life changing
:03:59. > :04:01.injuries and he is still in hospital in a stable condition. Scotland Yard
:04:02. > :04:05.that they are concerned about possible retaliation attacks and
:04:06. > :04:10.they have put extra patrols in this part of Newham as a precaution. They
:04:11. > :04:13.are asking for information about a light-coloured 4x seen driving off
:04:14. > :04:18.after the shooting. We know that here in London. -- a light-coloured
:04:19. > :04:23.4x4. We know knife crime has gone up 22% in the last year and now gun
:04:24. > :04:28.crime is up 42% so what we see with these cases culminating today, a
:04:29. > :04:30.knife death and a gun death is that these are both still big problems
:04:31. > :04:34.affecting young people in the capital. Thank you for joining us.

:06:24. > :06:26.Others are not so sure about the suggestion unskilled EU
:06:27. > :06:28.workers could only come here for two years.
:06:29. > :06:31.We need to think about, when people have been here for two years,
:06:32. > :06:34.have they made their lives, have they settled down and what do
:06:35. > :06:36.we need to go through to enable them to perhaps stay?
:06:37. > :06:39.We need to think about our own people wanting to go
:06:40. > :06:43.It is not just retail watching anxiously.
:06:44. > :06:48.At this restaurant in Ealing, half the 30 staff are British
:06:49. > :06:54.As hard as we try, and as much as we try to work with local
:06:55. > :06:57.universities or colleges, educational bodies, we are just not
:06:58. > :07:01.So to be honest, short of the government having a complete
:07:02. > :07:03.rethink about how we position hospitality to young
:07:04. > :07:05.people as a career option, I can't see how we're
:07:06. > :07:11.But many people aren't convinced by that and want assurances that
:07:12. > :07:14.free movement is curtailed as soon as possible.

:08:11. > :08:15.This nearby estate is also set to be rebuilt.
:08:16. > :08:19.Half of its 1500 homes will be affordable.
:08:20. > :08:21.And the mayor today announced a new ?250 million fund that
:08:22. > :08:25.City Hall will use to buy land and then sell on to house builders.
:08:26. > :08:27.We've got to make sure we recognise that actually,
:08:28. > :08:31.we've got to build more homes but they've got to be the right
:08:32. > :08:34.But like many politicians, the mayor is fond of a catchphrase.
:08:35. > :08:38.And when it comes to housing, and the speed at which he can
:08:39. > :08:42.That's why I always say, it is a marathon, not a sprint.
:08:43. > :08:44.I've said, it is going to be a marathon and a sprint.
:08:45. > :08:47.When it comes to homes to rent cheaply, though,
:08:48. > :08:55.In the last year, your administration have built no
:08:56. > :08:58.That is because we used the money given by the previous
:08:59. > :09:03.So for the next year as well, there will be very few council homes
:09:04. > :09:05.being built because the last mayor didn't give any money.
:09:06. > :09:09.But you can understand, can't you, why people will be
:09:10. > :09:11.frustrated when they say, look, someone is coming in, saying,
:09:12. > :09:14."This is affordable housing, I am a mayor for all people".
:09:15. > :09:16.And actually for those at the bottom, they can see nothing
:09:17. > :09:18.delivered in the first couple of years?
:09:19. > :09:22.Oh, look, that is why I always say, it is a marathon, not a sprint.
:09:23. > :09:25.I'm afraid it is going to take some time for Londoners to see some
:09:26. > :09:31.How many are you going to build, do you think, by the end of your term?
