0:00:00 > 0:00:00Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.
0:00:18 > 0:00:19Good evening.
0:00:19 > 0:00:20I'm Asad Ahmad.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23The Mayor of London has welcomed the Brexit agreement
0:00:23 > 0:00:24reached in Brussels, saying he's glad that EU
0:00:24 > 0:00:27citizens will continue to live and work in London.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30Sadiq Khan was speaking at the end of his visit to the sub-continuent
0:00:30 > 0:00:32where his message to India and Pakistan is that London
0:00:32 > 0:00:34is very much "open for business".
0:00:34 > 0:00:35Our Political Correspondent, Karl Mercer has been
0:00:35 > 0:00:40travelling with the Mayor.
0:00:40 > 0:00:45For most of Karachi, it was business as usual this morning.
0:00:45 > 0:00:49This is a city of 15 million people, the commercial capital of Pakistan,
0:00:49 > 0:00:55and a city that continues to grow.
0:00:58 > 0:01:03It's also home to Mazar-e-Quaid, the mausoleum for the country's
0:01:03 > 0:01:06founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
0:01:15 > 0:01:22In a solemn ceremony, the mayor laid a wreath.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31As everywhere else in Pakistan, it's a visit that has
0:01:31 > 0:01:34attracted huge attention.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38And a huge security presence.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40This was at his next visit to a local university,
0:01:40 > 0:01:48where the mayor explained how he became a lawyer.
0:01:48 > 0:01:53There was this TV programme called LA Law, and, in this programme
0:01:53 > 0:01:55the lawyers wore great suits and drove fast cars.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57And I thought, yeah, I can do that!
0:01:57 > 0:02:00A joke for a crowd keen to hear from London's mayor.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04So, it's a big deal because we find a lot of parallels between London
0:02:04 > 0:02:11and Karachi, and we never knew that was actually possible.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14And he really opened new lines for us to share
0:02:14 > 0:02:15between the two cities.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17The reception at a cricket charity was just as enthusiastic.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20But while the mayor is ending his South Asian tour,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22we learnt today the UK would be starting detailed
0:02:22 > 0:02:23trade talks on Brexit.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25I'm really pleased that finally, 16 months on, EU citizens,
0:02:25 > 0:02:29Londoners who contribute so hugely to us in our country,
0:02:29 > 0:02:32appear to have been given the guarantee I wanted,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34which is them having rights after we leave the EU,
0:02:34 > 0:02:35that they have now.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39But here's where it gets really tough with the European Union.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43My worry is, that all the evidence we have so far is the government
0:02:43 > 0:02:45is not prepared to do a good negotiation with the EU.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47They have no idea what the destination is, let
0:02:47 > 0:02:49alone how we get best.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52alone how we get there.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Like Boris Johnson when he toured India, the mayor couldn't resist
0:02:55 > 0:02:56picking up the bat here in Pakistan.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58A light-hearted end to his six-day trip.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01What are the three words that stick in your memory from this?
0:03:01 > 0:03:02LAUGHTER.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05The key thing I have been saying to people in London
0:03:05 > 0:03:07for the last 16 months is, London is open,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09and around the world.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13We have brought this message now to Pakistan and India.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15Finally, his innings was over.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17Stumped by the current Pakistan cricket captain.
0:03:17 > 0:03:18But the trip is over, too.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20The mayor, and the poster behind him, are hoping
0:03:20 > 0:03:30to leave the simple message.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34For the third time in as many years, there's a damning report
0:03:34 > 0:03:36into Wormwood Scrubs prison in west London.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39This time, an inspection has found it to have "Persistent failings"
0:03:39 > 0:03:41with "high levels of violence" against staff and inmates.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Inspectors said there were "filthy conditions" inside and they raised
0:03:43 > 0:03:45serious concerns about how Wormwood Scrubs is performing.
0:03:45 > 0:03:54Here's our Home Affairs correspondent, Nick Beake.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56More than 1200 men are held within the Victorian
0:03:56 > 0:03:59walls of Wormwood Scrubs, and the huge problems inside have
0:03:59 > 0:04:03been well documented.
0:04:03 > 0:04:07Filthy and unsafe - that is how Wormwood Scrubs prison
0:04:07 > 0:04:11has been described by inspectors...
0:04:11 > 0:04:14Figures show an increase in assaults, with
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Wormwood Scrubs named...
0:04:16 > 0:04:20A jail in west London has been found to be rat-infested and overcrowded,
0:04:20 > 0:04:24with some prisoners too frightened to leave their cells...
0:04:24 > 0:04:28Now, once again, inspectors have delivered a damning assessment.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31For the third time in a little over three years we've inspected
0:04:31 > 0:04:33Wormwood Scrubs and found the conditions there
0:04:33 > 0:04:36are completely unacceptable.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39What needs to happen is that the prison service needs
0:04:39 > 0:04:42to do something to support the governor and his team,
0:04:42 > 0:04:45who are working incredibly hard in really difficult circumstances.
0:04:45 > 0:04:50Inspectors described a dramatic increase in violence against staff -
0:04:50 > 0:04:5490 assaults in six months.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58They found two thirds of inmates had themselves felt unsafe and some
0:04:58 > 0:05:02prisoners were locked in cells for up to 23 hours a day.
0:05:02 > 0:05:07The organisation representing prison staff say that government funding
0:05:07 > 0:05:11cuts have made things worse.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14I highlight the same issues - lack of staff, lack of regime,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17unsafe prison, drugs, lack of resettlement.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19The government have got to get a grip.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22No minister would do an interview today, but the Ministry of Justice
0:05:22 > 0:05:25said Wormwood Scrubs had taken decisive action to reduce violence
0:05:25 > 0:05:28and improve conditions.
0:05:28 > 0:05:34120 extra officers are also being recruited.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36But one charity which campaigns for better prisons says the current
0:05:36 > 0:05:41approach simply isn't working.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44We cannot keep doing this to people, to staff, prisoners,
0:05:44 > 0:05:45victims, taxpayers.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48Action has to be taken.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51The Secretary of State must act and there has to be a reduction
0:05:51 > 0:05:53in the number of people in Wormwood Scrubs
0:05:53 > 0:05:55and in other prisons.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Some problems here could take years to fix, but inspectors say
0:05:57 > 0:06:03there is no excuse for more basic failings, like not providing
0:06:03 > 0:06:10enough clothes and bedding for the men who live here.
0:06:10 > 0:06:16A compensation payout which could total £100 million
0:06:16 > 0:06:19is being offered by Lambeth Council to victims of child sex abuse
0:06:19 > 0:06:23going back 60 years.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26It follows an investigation into child abuse which led
0:06:26 > 0:06:29to victims coming forward from the council-run
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Shirley Oaks Children's Home.
0:06:32 > 0:06:33That's it for now from me,
0:06:33 > 0:06:36but let's find out what the weather's up to with Darren Bett.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38People wondering if there will be snow this weekend.
0:06:41 > 0:06:47It is unlikely to happen. Other parts of the country had some snow
0:06:47 > 0:06:51today. We had blue skies and sunshine. We start the weekend with
0:06:51 > 0:06:54more sunshine. The wind will be lighter but the weather will change
0:06:54 > 0:06:58for the second half of the weekend. Right now it's pretty cold out there
0:06:58 > 0:07:02and we will have clear skies throughout the night. A dry night.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05The north-westerly wind already beginning to ease down so
0:07:05 > 0:07:10temperatures will be lower than last night. A widespread frost out there.
0:07:10 > 0:07:19A bright and sunny start. Looks like quite a nice day on Saturday. Will
0:07:19 > 0:07:21not be as windy as today and probably won't feel as cold as
0:07:21 > 0:07:25today. Although temperatures will be the same. It'll be a dry day with
0:07:25 > 0:07:29lots of sunshine. But by the early hours of Sunday morning we could
0:07:29 > 0:07:32find a bit of sleet and snow that will turn back to
