0:00:00 > 0:00:01More details on the BBC News

0:00:15 > 0:00:21Good evening - I'm Alex Bushill.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Welcome to BBC London News.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Police are hunting a man with a backpack they believe may

0:00:26 > 0:00:29know something about the double murder of a father and

0:00:29 > 0:00:30daughter in Deptford.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Noel Brown's body was found next to his daughter Marie,

0:00:32 > 0:00:33at his home in Deptford.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Police believe Mr Brown's daughter, who worked at a nearby primary

0:00:36 > 0:00:39school, was also killed when she went to check on her father

0:00:39 > 0:00:40and may have inadvertently disturbed the killer.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Tolu Adeoye has been speaking exclusively to the head teacher

0:00:43 > 0:00:45at the school where Marie worked.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49Who killed Marie and Noel Brown?

0:00:49 > 0:00:52More than two weeks since the father and daughter

0:00:52 > 0:00:53were found strangled to

0:00:53 > 0:00:56death at his flat in Deptford police have made no arrests.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Today the headteacher at the primary school

0:00:58 > 0:01:01where Marie was a children's centre creche worker spoke of how her death

0:01:01 > 0:01:08has affected the school community.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11The school, I think, is still in shock over what's happened.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15It was horrendous news to receive, completely, completely devastated.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Marie was an incredibly kind and loving person, very patient.

0:01:19 > 0:01:27Obviously she was a very valued colleague,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29a much loved friend, but we mustn't forget that actually

0:01:29 > 0:01:31first and foremost she was a much

0:01:31 > 0:01:34loved mum and we have two girls who have lost their mum

0:01:34 > 0:01:39and also their grandfather.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Marie's father was last seen alive on Thursday 30th

0:01:42 > 0:01:44November at a betting shop he regularly visited.

0:01:44 > 0:01:45Police say he had likely been

0:01:45 > 0:01:46killed by the following morning.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Marie Brown was believed to have arrived here at her father's

0:01:49 > 0:01:52flat around midday on 2nd December.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54She'd been worried because she'd been unable

0:01:54 > 0:01:55to get in touch with him.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57She was never seen alive again.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Detectives believe she may have disturbed the attacker as they

0:01:59 > 0:02:01tried to dismember her father's body.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Today police revealed some of his body parts still haven't

0:02:04 > 0:02:05been found.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08They've released CCTV footage of a man they would like to speak to

0:02:08 > 0:02:11who was seen behaving suspiciously in the area.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15The main suspect is seen on CCTV around about five

0:02:15 > 0:02:22o'clock in the morning on Saturday 2nd December.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24He is seen in another area to here and finally

0:02:24 > 0:02:27here where he enters the estate.

0:02:27 > 0:02:36Having managed to avoid members of the public,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45waiting near some bushes and then entering to go towards

0:02:45 > 0:02:46Noel's flat.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The CCTV isn't fantastic at the moment but what you

0:02:49 > 0:02:52can see is a clear big rucksack on his back, distinctive by its

0:02:52 > 0:02:54fluorescent stripes it has got on it over his shoulder.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57I want people to really focus in to the detail, even

0:02:57 > 0:03:00though it's the back of him, that they may know that person to be

0:03:00 > 0:03:02their neighbour, somebody they know, it could be anybody.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05And there are still no clear motives for the murders.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Noel Brown is a convicted sex offender and a gambler but

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Scotland Yard says nothing suggests those were reasons for the killings.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12So, for those who knew the father and daughter, the questions as to

0:03:12 > 0:03:14who and why remain.

0:03:14 > 0:03:15And children inevitably have questions that we've

0:03:15 > 0:03:17been answering very honestly and as best

0:03:17 > 0:03:19we can, and indeed one of the

0:03:19 > 0:03:21questions has been, no, we don't know who yet has done this.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23And that's a very tough question to answer.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Tolu Adeoye, BBC London News.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Crowds of supporters have come out tonight in a protest

0:03:27 > 0:03:29outside Downing Street, calling on the Prime Minister

0:03:29 > 0:03:31to give free sanitary products to all schoolgirls

0:03:31 > 0:03:34who receive free school meals.

0:03:34 > 0:03:45The government already

0:03:46 > 0:03:50spends more than £2 billion a year on the Pupil Premium for the most

0:03:50 > 0:03:53disadvantaged Juden scum which it says can be spent on sanitary items

0:03:53 > 0:03:55if schools want.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Alpa Patel was there and has sent this report.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00They came from all over the country.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Hundreds of women of all ages, and men too, calling

0:04:03 > 0:04:04on the Government to help schoolgirls who cannot

0:04:04 > 0:04:07afford sanitary products.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Amika George is the 18-year-old who organised the protest from

0:04:10 > 0:04:11her bedroom.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13I think is really vital that the government intervenes so

0:04:13 > 0:04:15they can provide some kind of long-term provision.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16And why should the government listen?

0:04:16 > 0:04:18They've got lots of other priorities.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19We are in austere times.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Why should the government pay attention to this one issue?

0:04:21 > 0:04:25I think it's really key, I think it's a key issue.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28A lot of people don't really think of periods as something

0:04:28 > 0:04:30that is holding a lot of girls back.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31It's an incentive.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33I think if girls are missing out on school that means

0:04:33 > 0:04:36they are less likely to get into a good university

0:04:36 > 0:04:38because they are not fulfilling their education.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40On average tampons and towels cost 13p each.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43According to one organisation, one in ten girls aged between 14 and

0:04:43 > 0:04:4621 cannot afford sanitary products.

0:04:46 > 0:04:53Politicians, actresses and models turned up to show their support.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57It's an absolute shame and disgrace that there are girls in the United

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Kingdom that regularly don't go to school because they cannot afford

0:05:00 > 0:05:02sanitary products.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04It is an absolute disgrace that we still have sales

0:05:04 > 0:05:06tax on sanitary products.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10We didn't have very much money and I remember

0:05:10 > 0:05:12me and my younger sister used to steal sanitary products

0:05:12 > 0:05:15when we were in other adults' houses as a way of

0:05:15 > 0:05:16getting around it.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Rather than not going to school and all this kind of thing.

0:05:19 > 0:05:25It's a real thing people don't want to talk about.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27We have a female Prime Minister of this country,

0:05:27 > 0:05:28could that not be good for something?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31We don't want more rights, we want equal rights and we

0:05:31 > 0:05:34need slightly different things to men in our school system.

0:05:34 > 0:05:35This protest was held near Downing Street.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38The demonstrators hope the Prime Minister is listening, but if

0:05:38 > 0:05:41she isn't they say they will come back as many times as they need

0:05:41 > 0:05:42to in order to be heard.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Alpa Patel, BBC London News.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Christmas comes but once a year - and sure enough, it's guaranteed

0:05:49 > 0:05:51to bring with it engineering works on the railways.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54This year is no different and Network Rail is drafting

0:05:54 > 0:05:58in thousands of engineers to carry out the work.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02It's of little consolation for those who will be caught up in one

0:06:02 > 0:06:03of the most disrupted Christmas getaways ever.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Our transport correspondent, Tom Edwards can tell us more.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09If you're going to try and get around the capital over

0:06:09 > 0:06:11the Christmas period, it might not be

0:06:11 > 0:06:12as easy as you think.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Beware Christmas disruption and the annual engineering works

0:06:15 > 0:06:19are just around the corner.

0:06:19 > 0:06:26London Bridge station much quieter than normal this morning.

0:06:26 > 0:06:34And next week, along with some major rail stations in the capital,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36it will be shut completely for ten days, while new

0:06:36 > 0:06:43signalling is fitted.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48Traditionally, the railway has always carried out this sort of work

0:06:48 > 0:06:50during the bank holidays for these blockades.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52We have to shut down during these periods

0:06:52 > 0:06:53because it is the quietest periods.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55They are the times that are traditionally less

0:06:55 > 0:06:58busy on the railway, so it is the most appropriate time.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00There is no public transport at all on Christmas Day,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03and over the break, most train timetables will be amended.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06There's also engineering work on the tube and industrial

0:07:06 > 0:07:12action on Greater Anglia, South-Western Railways and the DLR.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14South-Eastern services at London Bridge will be

0:07:14 > 0:07:16closed for ten days, as will Cannon Street Station

0:07:16 > 0:07:20and Charing Cross.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Paddington will also be shut for four days.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26In the Thames Valley tracks are being replaced and new power

0:07:26 > 0:07:29lines will mean these electric trains will be able to run

0:07:29 > 0:07:30on the Great Western.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33It's taking out the 1970s track and installing it with faster,

0:07:33 > 0:07:40more reliable equipment.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Network Rail says it is confident it will finish on time

0:07:43 > 0:07:45and the work is essential.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47So as ever, check before you travel.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49There is a lot of detail.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52If you want to find out more, you can go to our website

0:07:52 > 0:07:57or our Twitter page.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02Fans of George Michael say they should be allowed to continue

0:08:10 > 0:08:12to leave messages and mementos at the shrine outside the late

0:08:12 > 0:08:14singer's house in North London.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Many have looked after the flowers and other items since they appeared

0:08:16 > 0:08:18after his death last Christmas.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19There had been some reports which suggested

0:08:19 > 0:08:20it should be removed.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21Tarah Welsh explains.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24A year ago on Christmas Day, George Michael passed away

0:08:24 > 0:08:25at just 53 years old.

0:08:25 > 0:08:31His music is famous around the world and is still topping charts.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34But his fans say they need somewhere to visit

0:08:34 > 0:08:41to celebrate his life, this

0:08:41 > 0:08:44has become it, a garden outside the star's home.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46What's important for fans is we have somewhere where we

0:08:46 > 0:08:56can go and sort of like pay our respects.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Because without anything official being done by any body else this is

0:08:59 > 0:09:02all we have. They have been media reports that some neighbours aren't

0:09:02 > 0:09:08happy.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Well, I think the row's been very talked up.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11I haven't had any complaints.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Of course, there are conservationists

0:09:13 > 0:09:16who say they don't want this to happen, but actually most people

0:09:16 > 0:09:17I've spoken to think it is absolutely fine.

0:09:17 > 0:09:23But what of locals in the pub opposite?

0:09:23 > 0:09:26It's just part of the Highgate furniture now and it's a real

0:09:26 > 0:09:27destination spot.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30A lot of tourists who come into the public house may

0:09:30 > 0:09:31be families who have travelled from Australia,

0:09:31 > 0:09:32South Africa, but this is

0:09:32 > 0:09:35a destination more so than Highgate Cemetery.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Both fans and family agree a more permanent tribute will be

0:09:38 > 0:09:40needed eventually.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42But for now this seems to bring some comfort to so

0:09:42 > 0:09:45many affected by the loss of George Michael.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Tarah Welsh, BBC London News.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53That's it from me so I'll wish you goodnight and hand you over

0:09:53 > 0:09:57to Chris Fawkes with a look at the weather leading up to Christmas.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03For those of you who have had a flutter on a white Christmas

0:10:03 > 0:10:06potentially bad news because it will stay miles between now and Christmas

0:10:06 > 0:10:10day with temperatures into double figures. As we go on through the

0:10:10 > 0:10:14next 24 hours this is what is going on at the moment, a lot of cloud

0:10:14 > 0:10:17upstream from us and that's coming our way, these weather fronts will

0:10:17 > 0:10:21stay to the north of the capital but nevertheless there will be a lot of

0:10:21 > 0:10:27cloud around, especially through the night tonight, some mist and for

0:10:27 > 0:10:31patches forming over the Chilterns and the downs but in the centre of

0:10:31 > 0:10:34town, low cloud, outbreaks of drizzle through the night, that's

0:10:34 > 0:10:38how we start the day tomorrow morning, damp, drizzly and dull. The

0:10:38 > 0:10:43cloud will get a little bit then, the drizzle moving around but for

0:10:43 > 0:10:49most of us it will stay cloudy day, 11 or 12 Celsius, barely falling

0:10:49 > 0:10:52overnight and barely rising during the day tomorrow. What about the

0:10:52 > 0:10:56outlook for the next few days? As I have hinted it will stay pretty

0:10:56 > 0:10:59cloudy up to Christmas day, maybe a bit brighter but temperatures in

0:10:59 > 0:11:01double figures so it will stay on
