0:00:00 > 0:00:00Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16The family of a man stabbed to death at Wormwood Scrubs prison yesterday

0:00:16 > 0:00:20whilst on remand have told BBC London that Khader Saleh was in fear

0:00:20 > 0:00:24of his life in the prison - just days before he was killed.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27And today, visiting friends and relatives of other inmates

0:00:27 > 0:00:29spoke of their shock at realising their loved

0:00:29 > 0:00:32ones may not be safe.

0:00:32 > 0:00:36Here's Charlotte Franks.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Wormwood Scrubs prison has had a poor history of violence

0:00:38 > 0:00:40over the last few years.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Yesterday, 25-year-old Khader Saleh was stabbed to death

0:00:44 > 0:00:46whilst on remand there.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50His mother received the news yesterday evening.

0:00:50 > 0:00:58She is really in a very bad feeling for her loss.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00And our loss as well.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04She felt he would be in a safe place, which is prison.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Khader Saleh had recently got married and had a one-year-old son.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11He'd been at Wormwood Scrubs prison for nine months awaiting his trial.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Last night, his family were told he was moved to a cell

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and stabbed seven times.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21We spoke to him four days ago, before he got killed.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25He was feeling very bad and he was afraid for his life.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Today, families visiting their loved ones at Wormwood Scrubs

0:01:29 > 0:01:31were concerned by the news.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34I'm terrified what's going to happen next.

0:01:34 > 0:01:39For everybody visiting today, they are all shocked.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42It's threatening, I feel sorry for the family,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45because your loved one has been taken away but you don't expect them

0:01:45 > 0:01:47to be killed inside prison.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51In 2017 a report into the prison by the independent monitoring board

0:01:51 > 0:01:54found it was dangerous for both inmates and officers.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58It identified 40 to 50 violent incidents per month,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02with 25% gang-related, and it highlighted how prisoners

0:02:02 > 0:02:07were only allowed to be released from their cells for one hour a day.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10The fatal stabbing here yesterday follows the recent

0:02:10 > 0:02:14decision to introduce CCTV, body worn cameras and extra dog

0:02:14 > 0:02:20patrols because the level of violence here has been so high.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23The MOJ say since the last inspection, Wormwood Scrubs has

0:02:23 > 0:02:26taken decisive action to reduce violence.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Despite this, Khader Saleh's family say they fear there could be more

0:02:30 > 0:02:34victims in future if security in the prison isn't increased.

0:02:34 > 0:02:42Four inmates in their 20s have been arrested.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44More now on the reaction to today's guilty verdict

0:02:44 > 0:02:48in the Finsbury Park terror attack against Muslim worshippers.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Darren Osborne was found guilty of murdering Makram Ali

0:02:51 > 0:02:54after he intentionally ploughed his van into

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Muslim Londoners with the intention of killing as many of

0:02:56 > 0:02:58them as possible.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02He became obsessed with Muslims after watching a BBC drama.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Our home affairs correspondent Nick Beake has been looking

0:03:04 > 0:03:09at the impact the attack has had.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Six months ago, a man who hated Muslims attacked this

0:03:11 > 0:03:17community in Finsbury Park, murdering one of their own.

0:03:17 > 0:03:25Now, they are welcoming a man who helped set up neo-Nazi groups.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Nigel Bromwich is now a changed man and fights against extremism

0:03:27 > 0:03:30in nine London boroughs.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33He also helps mosques to understand the threat from the far right -

0:03:33 > 0:03:37a threat he says is rising.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40The increased use of the Internet and social media, the fact that

0:03:40 > 0:03:44people are more open about their racist views,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46and I think because it's more mainstream and people are open

0:03:46 > 0:03:50about it, it's encouraging more people to get involved.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Does that worry you?

0:03:51 > 0:03:53It always worries me.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56All extremism is wrong and if far right extremism is growing we've got

0:03:56 > 0:03:58to try and build buffers and stop that.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01An angry imam stops the crowd from assaulting the killer,

0:04:01 > 0:04:11the man not repentant.

0:04:11 > 0:04:17-- during the attack, a local imam stops the crowd from assaulting the

0:04:17 > 0:04:21killer, a man not repentant.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23The imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, told us why he intervened.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24It was a normal human response to...

0:04:24 > 0:04:28To defend somebody who's defenceless, even though he didn't

0:04:28 > 0:04:32extent that same courtesy to the people whom just moments

0:04:32 > 0:04:36earlier he rammed into with his van, killing one of them,

0:04:36 > 0:04:42and inflicting life-changing injuries on others.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46He says he didn't want worshippers to hand out their own justice.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49To then reciprocate his rage and anger and hatred

0:04:49 > 0:04:52with an equal response, rather to show him the humanity that

0:04:52 > 0:05:02can be demonstrated, even in these extreme circumstances.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05The attack here in Finsbury Park last summer clearly had a profound

0:05:05 > 0:05:11impact on many Muslim worshippers, as well as the wider community,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14but it's also had an effect on many mosques and Islamic

0:05:14 > 0:05:17centres across London.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22This week, more than 100 Muslim leaders gathered together.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24One conversation was how best to combat the resurgence

0:05:24 > 0:05:27of the far right.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30From a situation where we were getting two or three calls a month,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33it's two or three calls a week, of how to protect

0:05:33 > 0:05:36those institutions.

0:05:36 > 0:05:43Finsbury Park has definitely woken up the leadership of mosques,

0:05:43 > 0:05:44and they are preparing their congregation, unfortunately

0:05:44 > 0:05:47if there is an attack, how to deal with it.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49The attack came at the height of a rise in Islamophobic

0:05:49 > 0:05:52incidents last year, a trend that has now fallen,

0:05:52 > 0:05:56but it seems many in London's Muslim communities feel that they must

0:05:56 > 0:06:04remain alert, while not being alarmed.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08West Ham United has suspended its Director of Player Recruitment -

0:06:08 > 0:06:11after he reportedly said that the Premier League football

0:06:11 > 0:06:15club "wouldn't sign any more African players".

0:06:15 > 0:06:18A newspaper claimed that Tony Henry said African players have a "bad

0:06:18 > 0:06:21attitude" and "cause mayhem" when left out of the team.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25The club is investigating.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Latest figures show the number of foreign nationals moving

0:06:27 > 0:06:30to London has fallen - with the biggest drop

0:06:30 > 0:06:32recorded from the EU.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And it's causing concern among some employers,

0:06:35 > 0:06:40as our Brexit reporter Katherine Carpenter explains.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45We like to think of ours as a global city, but official figures show

0:06:45 > 0:06:47there's been a drop in the number of foreign nationals coming

0:06:47 > 0:06:51to London, particularly young people and those from the EU.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Hello...

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Not that you'd know it at this recruitment company in Blackfriars.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00I'm 20 and I'm from Belgium.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02I'm Josephine and I'm from Germany.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05I'm half French, half Northern Irish.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07As well as having strong personal ties to Europe,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10their professional success relies on encouraging skilled workers

0:07:10 > 0:07:14from the EU to come to London, so has that got harder?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16A common interview question is where do you see yourself

0:07:17 > 0:07:19in five years' time?

0:07:19 > 0:07:21When people don't know whether they will be able

0:07:21 > 0:07:24to continue in the role in their location, it gets

0:07:24 > 0:07:25a difficult question.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28I had a couple of candidates who have left saying they are not

0:07:28 > 0:07:32staying here after Brexit, but also candidates who said, OK,

0:07:32 > 0:07:39I'm coming now before Brexit which worked out well in my favour.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43National insurance number registrations were down over 20%

0:07:43 > 0:07:48in the third quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51and the sharpest fall was in the number of EU nationals

0:07:51 > 0:07:56coming here, a drop of 25%, particularly younger Europeans.

0:07:56 > 0:08:03The number 18 to 34-year-olds coming to the capital was down 16.1%.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06It's a long-term trend since 2014 when there was a peak,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08and it's accelerated since the referendum and it suggests

0:08:08 > 0:08:12we don't know how many people from the EU are leaving London

0:08:12 > 0:08:15but it suggests people are having second thoughts before moving over.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17He acknowledges that Brexit will not be the only reason.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21European citizens whose countries' economies are performing well may

0:08:21 > 0:08:25feel less urge to leave.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Some people will welcome the drop in migration as one

0:08:27 > 0:08:30of the factors they voted to leave the European Union.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33We're not seeing big changes in unemployment

0:08:33 > 0:08:35or job numbers in London.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Ten more immigrants coming over doesn't mean ten more jobs

0:08:38 > 0:08:41are unavailable for local people, because immigrants create work

0:08:41 > 0:08:44as well as taking jobs.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Sectors like construction, which rely heavily on EU migrants,

0:08:46 > 0:08:54may find little comfort in the capital's current resilience.

0:08:54 > 0:09:00Louisa Preston has more on this.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04It seems EU citizens and London are really quite concerned about this.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08Yeah, they really are. We know there are about 1 million EU citizens

0:09:08 > 0:09:13living here in the capital. Some have been here for decades and with

0:09:13 > 0:09:15the Brexit negotiations moving onto the next phase they are very

0:09:15 > 0:09:19concerned that their worries about their security on their future will

0:09:19 > 0:09:23just be forgotten about. So much so that today, they went to the

0:09:23 > 0:09:27European Parliament to speak to a human rights committee, to make sure

0:09:27 > 0:09:30that they aren't forgotten about. This is extremely timely, because

0:09:30 > 0:09:36just last night Theresa May said those who have come to the UK after

0:09:36 > 0:09:39March, 2019, during the transition period, shouldn't have full

0:09:39 > 0:09:43residency rights. So this is exactly what EU citizens have been worried

0:09:43 > 0:09:47about at this stage, that they are going to be used as bargaining chips

0:09:47 > 0:09:52and they say that cannot happen.I'm sure there will be more twists and

0:09:52 > 0:09:57turns yet, Louisa Preston, thank you. Time now for the weather

0:09:57 > 0:10:00forecast. Today started off beautifully sunny but this evening I

0:10:00 > 0:10:01was soaked, standing in the rain.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04beautifully sunny but this evening I was soaked, standing in the rain.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08When he's finished his Thai raid, a very good evening, you obviously

0:10:08 > 0:10:13didn't pay attention to the forecast. -- when he's finished his

0:10:13 > 0:10:17ranting. As you may have mentioned, it didn't stay like this because

0:10:17 > 0:10:21there was that belt of rain. He wasn't alone, many got caught up in

0:10:21 > 0:10:26that. That is gradually pulling away and thankfully the skies are

0:10:26 > 0:10:30beginning to clear for your journey home and it looks as though it will

0:10:30 > 0:10:34be a dry night. Still that noticeable breeze coming in from the

0:10:34 > 0:10:39north-west, which has been quite a feature of the day. You may well be

0:10:39 > 0:10:41scraping your car first, particularly to the west of London I

0:10:41 > 0:10:45would have thought. Out east from the word go there is that chance of

0:10:45 > 0:10:51seeing some showers coming down. Bit of winteriness, not a big issue for

0:10:51 > 0:10:55many of us. The temperature is pretty close to where we have been

0:10:55 > 0:11:01today, around 7-8. The weekend will be cloudy and cold and I think there

0:11:01 > 0:11:01will
