0:00:00 > 0:00:01Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are.
0:00:14 > 0:00:16Welcome to BBC London News with me Chris Rogers.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18First tonight: A former shop owner who illegally sold dangerous
0:00:18 > 0:00:22skin lightening products - has been fined thousands of pounds,
0:00:22 > 0:00:30following an investigation by this programme.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33Banaras Hussain pleaded guilty to ten offences and was given
0:00:33 > 0:00:34a suspended sentence.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36Officers at a London council went undercover to gather evidence
0:00:36 > 0:00:38of his under-the-counter business, and seized thousands of products.
0:00:38 > 0:00:39Tarah Welsh reports.
0:00:39 > 0:00:45When an undercover researcher tried to buy band skin whitening products
0:00:45 > 0:00:52from this store in Peckham in 2015, this is what happened.
0:00:59 > 0:01:05They offered us the biggest pot they have.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07But look, former director, Banaris Hussain, gets it
0:01:07 > 0:01:10from under the counter.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12When we asked for a receipt, he ripped the name of
0:01:12 > 0:01:22the company from the receipt.
0:01:22 > 0:01:23He knew what he was doing was illegal.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24illegal.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Earlier that year and the year before that he had been convicted
0:01:27 > 0:01:30for a similar offence but that would not stop him,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32when the council raided the shop, this is what they found.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35A semi-hidden storage area, no ceiling to it, you have to get
0:01:35 > 0:01:38in there on your hands and knees, and there was lots of
0:01:38 > 0:01:39steroid -based products.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43One of those was that which we bought before.
0:01:43 > 0:01:49Products containing this chemical can damage the liver, nervous system
0:01:49 > 0:01:54and have a number of negative effects on the skin. From this shop
0:01:54 > 0:01:56alone two and a half thousand potentially dangerous products were
0:01:56 > 0:02:04seized by the Southwark trading standards department. People selling
0:02:04 > 0:02:10face going to prison for up to two years. This man was handed a 15 week
0:02:10 > 0:02:15suspended sentence and ordered to pay costs and fines of almost
0:02:15 > 0:02:19£26,000. The footage from our investigation was used as part of
0:02:19 > 0:02:27the prosecution case. We filmed you selling these products in your shop
0:02:27 > 0:02:32two years ago, we wondered if you will stop now, you've been convicted
0:02:32 > 0:02:37four times.Completely stopped, happy?What would you say to the
0:02:37 > 0:02:42people who may have been harmed using your products.Who got harmed?
0:02:42 > 0:02:47They cause liver damage, skin problems, organ failure. No comment.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50The sentence sends a message to those people who want to sell
0:02:50 > 0:02:58illegal products to members of the community that our team, trading
0:02:58 > 0:03:03standards, will prosecute them and bring them to justice.This isn't a
0:03:03 > 0:03:08problem just here in Southwark. According to London trading
0:03:08 > 0:03:13standards in 2000 1615 businesses across the capital were fined more
0:03:13 > 0:03:19than £168,000 for dealing in unsafe cosmetic products. While there is
0:03:19 > 0:03:24still demand for such cosmetics, we're likely to see more convictions
0:03:24 > 0:03:28from those profiteering from selling them.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30Campaigners have failed to block a controversial £2 billion
0:03:30 > 0:03:32housing scheme planned for north London.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35But despite the High Court ruling - the development may not go ahead
0:03:35 > 0:03:36anyway because of a political row.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Marc Ashdown has been following the legal battle
0:03:38 > 0:03:46with Haringey Council.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50Lots of twists and turns in this. The heart of it is straightforward,
0:03:50 > 0:03:54how do you solve a housing crisis? Hangai has thousands of people on
0:03:54 > 0:03:59the waiting list. The current council had a plan to build 6000
0:03:59 > 0:04:02more homes but with a public-private partnership. It's called the
0:04:02 > 0:04:06Haringey development vehicle, it would have been building homes with
0:04:06 > 0:04:10a private developer. It angered left-wing members of the party,
0:04:10 > 0:04:14Jeremy Corbyn supporters, the all powerful momentum group who are dead
0:04:14 > 0:04:23against it. Campaign is to get to the High Court. The High Court judge
0:04:23 > 0:04:26backed the council is aborted their plan and blew out of the water all
0:04:26 > 0:04:33the arguments against it. Certainly not for now. Infighting has led to
0:04:33 > 0:04:38Claire Cockburn resigning, claiming bullying, sexism and intimidation at
0:04:38 > 0:04:42the hands of Corbyn supporters. Last night the council passed an
0:04:42 > 0:04:45amendment kicking it all into the long grass. These clips sum up where
0:04:45 > 0:04:49we are.I have no pleasure in proposing this amendment because I
0:04:49 > 0:04:58still believe I believe it's only today and it may be popular, the HDV
0:04:58 > 0:05:02is the best solution available because politics means engaging in
0:05:02 > 0:05:09the world as it is rather than the world as we may want it to be.I'm
0:05:09 > 0:05:11hoping now there is a real listening to the local community and I think
0:05:11 > 0:05:15that's what the Labour Party is doing. The feeling I was getting
0:05:15 > 0:05:18when I was up there is people weren't confident this scheme would
0:05:18 > 0:05:22deliver them the secure homes they need. That is why there needs to be
0:05:22 > 0:05:29a real reconsideration.Bit of a mess isn't it?It is, it's gone
0:05:29 > 0:05:33beyond, some say, one council in London symptomatic of the deep
0:05:33 > 0:05:37divisions in the Labour Party. Could we see more centrist versus
0:05:37 > 0:05:39left-wing clashes in the run-up to the local elections in May.
0:05:39 > 0:05:46Possibly. It leaves Haringey with a major housing problem. We saw a
0:05:46 > 0:05:49judge backing this plan saying it was perfectly fair and legal. The
0:05:49 > 0:05:55Shadow Chancellor saying people in the area don't really want it. A
0:05:55 > 0:05:59more Corbyn supporting council were coming in May. The people will want
0:05:59 > 0:06:08to see housing built. It's a tricky one.Thanks for that.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11It's not your usual Museum exhibit - but part of a giant fatberg found
0:06:11 > 0:06:14under the streets of Whitechapel has gone on display at
0:06:14 > 0:06:15the Museum of London.
0:06:15 > 0:06:17The toxic lump was one of the largest ever found,
0:06:17 > 0:06:19and is going on show because of it 'historical
0:06:19 > 0:06:20significance'.
0:06:20 > 0:06:28Wendy Hurrell has more.
0:06:28 > 0:06:29September last year.
0:06:29 > 0:06:31One of the biggest fatbergs in the world was found
0:06:31 > 0:06:33in the Victorian sewers below Whitechapel.
0:06:33 > 0:06:34It was 250 metres long.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37The Museum of London wanted a piece of it.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39Here it is, the last remaining part of the Whitechapel fatberg,
0:06:39 > 0:06:42safely encased in not one, but two very thick glass boxes.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45The oils have been aired ride, so it's almost like a rock now.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48In its greasy grip things like sweetie wrappers are sticking out.
0:06:48 > 0:06:58It also hatched its own flies.
0:06:58 > 0:07:03And no one knows what's going to happen to it next.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05Because nobody has ever tried to preserve a fatberg before.
0:07:05 > 0:07:15It's very experimental, low-temperature storage, freezing,
0:07:22 > 0:07:24storage in formaldehide.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27And we slowly worked the options and ruled all of those out.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29It stops letting off toxic gases now, the smell in case
0:07:29 > 0:07:30you were wondering...
0:07:30 > 0:07:34Dry fatberg has a bit more of a smelly toilet sort of smell.
0:07:34 > 0:07:35These fatbergs have been found all over London
0:07:36 > 0:07:37and all over the world.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40And I think it's a really good way of putting it on display
0:07:40 > 0:07:42and starting a difficult conversation about what
0:07:42 > 0:07:44are we doing, what are we doing to our city?
0:07:44 > 0:07:48Do we need to look at our own actions and think about how we might
0:07:48 > 0:07:49have to do things differently?
0:07:49 > 0:07:51It'll be on display at least until July.
0:07:51 > 0:07:53A stark reminder of our issues with waste in the metropolis.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55And starting a difficult conversation about what are
0:07:55 > 0:07:57we doing, what are we doing to our city?
0:07:57 > 0:08:0016 The firefighters at Paddington Red Watch were some
0:08:00 > 0:08:02of the first on the scene at the Grenfell Tower
0:08:02 > 0:08:03fire last June.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06Now 9 of them have decided to run the London marathon to raise money
0:08:06 > 0:08:09for the victims and their families , in full firefighters kit
0:08:09 > 0:08:10and breathing apparatus sets.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12Regular marathon runner Sophie Raworth has been talking them
0:08:12 > 0:08:15about the night of the fire.
0:08:15 > 0:08:1671 people died that night.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19The fire crews who repeatedly queued up to go into the burning tower
0:08:19 > 0:08:22managed to save the lives of 65 others.
0:08:22 > 0:08:23It was quite chaotic.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27We were there 13 hours.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Even on a big job you get relief for five hours later,
0:08:29 > 0:08:32another crew will come and relieve you from another station.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35But we didn't want to go anyway, we wouldn't have left anyway.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37The enormity of it only hit us, hit me personally, after,
0:08:37 > 0:08:44a few days later when I'd seen what had happened.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46You wouldn't be human if it didn't affect you in anyway.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49What kind of response did you get from the community afterwards?
0:08:49 > 0:08:50It was quite overwhelming.
0:08:50 > 0:08:51The thanks and applause we got.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53Was quite something else, really.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56So the fact they did appreciate us was sort of difficult to deal with,
0:08:56 > 0:09:05because we don't really get that day-to-day.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07What happened that night affected them also deeply that nine
0:09:07 > 0:09:13of the Grenfell Tower firefighters are now training to run
0:09:13 > 0:09:17the London Marathon to raise money for the victims and their families.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21And they're not making it easy for themselves.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23You're going to run 26.2 miles with this on?
0:09:23 > 0:09:24Oh my God.
0:09:24 > 0:09:30How much does this way?
0:09:30 > 0:09:3230.
0:09:32 > 0:09:3330 kilos.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35That's like carrying a sort of small kid.
0:09:35 > 0:09:36Not even a small kid, but a nine-year-old
0:09:36 > 0:09:37child on your back.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40It all means extra training, running around the fire
0:09:40 > 0:09:41station in between shifts.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43The money raised will be split between three charities,
0:09:43 > 0:09:45want help firefighters, two others at the heart
0:09:45 > 0:09:55of the Grenfell community.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00We're not doing it for our own personal gain, we want
0:10:00 > 0:10:02the story to be about them.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Trying to raise as much money for them as possible.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06Firefighter Martin Gillam finishing that report there.
0:10:06 > 0:10:06Firefighter Martin Gillam finishing that report there.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09That's it for now from me, but lets find out what the weathers
0:10:09 > 0:10:10up to with Chris Fawkes.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14Thanks a lot. The day started off on a promising note with a fair bit of
0:10:14 > 0:10:19sunshine, the cloud over a little bit but not before this weather
0:10:19 > 0:10:23watchers snap was caught. Thanks for sending it in. Whether on the
0:10:23 > 0:10:26change, a weather front moving in overnight and tomorrow morning as
0:10:26 > 0:10:32well, bringing rain and cold air following. We're looking at rain
0:10:32 > 0:10:34arriving before long. It would be quite heavy, the wind picking up for
0:10:34 > 0:10:40a time. The cloud and rain keeping temperatures up. Those between three
0:10:40 > 0:10:44and six Celsius. Tomorrow morning it's rain should move away fairly
0:10:44 > 0:10:48quickly, the sky brightened up for time. That cold air moving in, we'll
0:10:48 > 0:10:53see some sunshine but also some wintry showers blowing in on a brisk
0:10:53 > 0:10:56and chilly north-west wind. Temperatures struggling through the
0:10:56 > 0:11:00afternoon, while in central London 5 degrees. It'll feel cold but
0:11:00 > 0:11:03forecast to get a little bit milder as we look at the outlook for the
0:11:03 > 0:11:04next few days. Rain on
