0:00:00 > 0:00:00That's all

0:00:00 > 0:00:01That's all from

0:00:01 > 0:00:01That's all from the

0:00:01 > 0:00:02That's all from the BBC

0:00:14 > 0:00:16Good afternoon and welcome to BBC London News.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18I'm Sonja Jessup.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21The BBC has learned the number of sexual offences reported

0:00:21 > 0:00:25on the Tube has more than trebled in the last five years.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28More than 700 cases were recorded last year.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Transport for London says it's because many victims are now more

0:00:31 > 0:00:33confident to come forward for help.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Tolu Adeoye has this report.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I was stood behind loads of people and this guy was behind me

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and he sort of started rubbing himself up against me,

0:00:43 > 0:00:47and I thought, maybe I've got the wrong impression here,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49but then I realised as it became more pronounced

0:00:49 > 0:00:52that he was actually, you know, feeling me up, groping me.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Imogen Groome was assaulted while travelling on the Central line

0:00:55 > 0:00:58on her way to work back in April.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00She says the experience has changed the way she now

0:01:00 > 0:01:02gets around the capital.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06I will usually try and plan around and take the bus where I can,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08just because there's more space and you're not going

0:01:08 > 0:01:10to get crammed in.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13It shouldn't happen, that's the bottom line.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16People shouldn't just take advantage because they can.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18It's not acceptable.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20The number of reported incidents is rising.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Statistics show, in the year to March this year, there were more

0:01:23 > 0:01:24than 700 reported offences on the Tube.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28That's gone up threefold from 225 five years ago.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30They account for around half the attacks reported

0:01:30 > 0:01:33on the train network.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35He definitely had blue eyes.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37You know, he shouldn't get away with it.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Police say campaigns like this one mean more victims have

0:01:39 > 0:01:41been coming forward.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Can we catch them after one report?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Sometimes, sometimes not.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48But certainly it will help us build that picture and we can establish

0:01:48 > 0:01:52when people come on the system, when people come off the system,

0:01:52 > 0:01:53what trains they are on.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56That can open up lines of enquiry to help catch these people.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Research on the London Underground shows that most offences

0:01:59 > 0:02:02were reported during rush-hour, dispelling the myth that this has

0:02:02 > 0:02:05anything to do with late-night drinking culture.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08It's often sober men travelling to and from work

0:02:08 > 0:02:12on packed Tube carriages.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14And campaigners say everyone using public transport

0:02:14 > 0:02:19has to take responsibility for keeping women safe.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22There's lots of bystanders lots of the time just turn the other

0:02:22 > 0:02:25eye, because they don't want to intervene, but I think it's

0:02:25 > 0:02:30really important that we all say, this is not on, it's not

0:02:30 > 0:02:33what we want for ourselves, it's not what we want for our children.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36We want to create a society where children are free to walk

0:02:36 > 0:02:39around and be in public safe without fear of attack.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Imogen didn't report the assault, something she now regrets.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I'd like to report being sexually harassed on the Tube.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46She's urging other women to speak up.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52A new crackdown's been launched to tackle the sale of illegal

0:02:52 > 0:02:53tobacco across the capital.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Trading Standards are using specially trained sniffer dogs

0:02:57 > 0:03:01to target businesses suspecting of selling it.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Drivers have been warned they face long delays after a lorry believed

0:03:06 > 0:03:09to be laden with chocolate bars went up in flames on a major

0:03:09 > 0:03:10road in Kent.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Three out of the four lanes on the London-bound A2,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15near Bluewater shopping centre, were closed to allow

0:03:15 > 0:03:17the blaze to be tackled.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Highways England said the lorry's load had melted

0:03:19 > 0:03:22onto the carriageway.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Ten years ago, a woman from Hertfordshire made medical

0:03:26 > 0:03:30history by becoming the first person in the UK to donate a kidney

0:03:30 > 0:03:32to a complete stranger.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Grandmother Kay Mason from Welwyn Garden City had to fight

0:03:36 > 0:03:37for the right to do so.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40She says was considered "mad" by some at the time.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42She's been speaking to our reporter, Yvonne Hall.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45We are in the home in Welwyn Garden City of Kay Mason,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48who fought for years to get the law changed to allow people to donate

0:03:48 > 0:03:51kidneys to people they didn't know.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Ten years ago, Kay was successful and became the first person

0:03:54 > 0:03:58in the UK to donate one of her kidneys to a stranger.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Kay, why did you want to do this?

0:04:00 > 0:04:05I wanted to do it once I realised it was possible to do it

0:04:05 > 0:04:09because I felt I had led a very privileged life.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13I'd been well and had successful grown-up children,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15so I had no dependents.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17And I felt I was able to do it.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20How has your recipient fared since the donation?

0:04:20 > 0:04:22My understanding is that she is well.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Has this had any impact on your health at all?

0:04:26 > 0:04:28No, I'm hale and hearty.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30And what would your advice be to someone who's thinking

0:04:30 > 0:04:32of donating a kidney?

0:04:32 > 0:04:35They've taken the first step in thinking about it,

0:04:35 > 0:04:39and it's worth consulting family, because having support

0:04:39 > 0:04:41is very useful.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45And then they can get information from the Give A Kidney website,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49and then approach their local transplant unit.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Thank you very much, Kay.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54It's hoped the tenth anniversary of Kay's donation will inspire

0:04:54 > 0:04:56others to follow suit.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59There are currently about 5000 people in the UK waiting

0:04:59 > 0:05:01for a kidney donation.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04The incidence of kidney disease is rising and, every year,

0:05:04 > 0:05:10about 250 people die whilst waiting for a suitable donor.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Next, we've heard how some areas in the capital have

0:05:16 > 0:05:18introduced their own currency - like the Brixton pound,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21for example - to help support local businesses.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Well, east London has taken it a step further -

0:05:24 > 0:05:27it's now got its own digital currency, via an app.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28So, a gimmick?

0:05:28 > 0:05:32Or a savvy way of helping the local economy?

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Ayshea Buksh has been finding out.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41It's a Hackney cafe where using money is sometimes discouraged.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44This customer has paid for her superfood smoothie

0:05:44 > 0:05:48with a mobile phone, topped up with East London pounds.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51You're using the app and the local currency and you're using local

0:05:51 > 0:05:53businesses and whatnot, and it's staying within

0:05:53 > 0:05:56the community and recirculating.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Customers upload money using an app on their mobile phone,

0:05:58 > 0:06:01and they are given small financial incentive for spending

0:06:01 > 0:06:04their digital currency locally.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07It's a start-up company that began in Israel and is now being used

0:06:07 > 0:06:12in Liverpool and 70 businesses in Hackney and Shoreditch.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15We're really educating customers to shop locally,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18live locally and support independent businesses, rather than going

0:06:18 > 0:06:20to shop at a big chain.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22They might take their money somewhere else

0:06:22 > 0:06:24other than east London.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Do you think maybe it's just a gimmick?

0:06:26 > 0:06:27No.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29I wouldn't think it's a gimmick because I can see how customers

0:06:30 > 0:06:31are happy to use it.

0:06:31 > 0:06:36It's not the first time we've seen local currencies.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41Back in 2009, the Brixton pound was launched and, more recently,

0:06:41 > 0:06:45there have been similar schemes in Bristol and Lewes in East Sussex.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49But, elsewhere in Hackney, not everyone was so positive.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50I'm kind of old-fashioned.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52I like to see hard money.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55I know what I'm spending, rather than using an app,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57so I don't think I'd be using something like that.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00What about the poor people that can't do things like that?

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Everything's gone all digital and then there's poor people that

0:07:03 > 0:07:05can't understand it.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07I'm not really on my phone, to be honest.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10And all that technology, I don't really understand.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11Just keep it to the minimum.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Digital currencies might not be everybody's cup of tea,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17but tech-savvy east Londoners can now boost the local

0:07:17 > 0:07:21economy even further.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Now, do you have a head for heights?

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Then this could be the restaurant for you.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30London in the Sky is serving food 100 foot in the air

0:07:30 > 0:07:33by Chelsea Embankment.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37The table's suspended from a crane, with chefs and guests strapped in.

0:07:37 > 0:07:42But you do have to hold on to your plate.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45You can see more on that story on our Facebook page.

0:07:45 > 0:07:46Now the weather with Georgina Burnett.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48Good afternoon.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51We are going to see quite a change in the weather over the next

0:07:51 > 0:07:53few hours in contrast with this morning.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55This was the scene captured by one of our weather

0:07:55 > 0:07:56watchers a few hours ago.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Thank you very much for that.

0:07:58 > 0:07:59Quite a lot of cloud around.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02But we are seeing that push off into the north-east,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04and the rain with it as well.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07So we are left with a drier, brighter end to the day,

0:08:07 > 0:08:09with some decent sunshine.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14Temperature-wise, getting up to about 21, 20 two Celsius today,

0:08:14 > 0:08:17but those temperatures actually dropping off over the next few

0:08:17 > 0:08:18hours with that cooler air coming in behind.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Overnight, mainly clear skies.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24We'll see a bit of cloud building in the early hours of the morning.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Temperatures getting down to about 13 or 14 degrees Celsius.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30There was a bit of cloud around tomorrow morning,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32but still quite a bright start with some sunshine.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36We'll see cloud building as we head through the day, mainly dry,

0:08:36 > 0:08:39but there may be one or two outbreaks of rain ahead

0:08:39 > 0:08:41of this band that's pushing through in the evening.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Quite a blustery band of rain, it is.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Tomorrow, temperatures getting up to 22 Celsius,

0:08:46 > 0:08:48that wind bringing in some warmer air again.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51So that band clears through the night, but Saturday,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54we are still seeing a fair few showers, some of which will be

0:08:54 > 0:08:56quite heavy, with longer spells of rain as well.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Quite a cloudy day on Saturday, not much brightness around.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01But Sunday there will still be some showers around,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03but they should be mainly light.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04Just one or two heavy ones.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Also some sunny intervals in between.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Temperature-wise, with that warmer air coming in,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11we could get up to 23 Celsius tomorrow, but otherwise

0:09:11 > 0:09:15we are sticking in the low 20s for the next few days.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19That's it from us - do join us again at 6:30pm.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Riz Lateef will be here with our evening programme.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24Have a great afternoon.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Bye-bye.
