:00:00. > :00:12.That is all. It is goodbye from me. On

:00:13. > :00:14.Good afternoon and welcome to BBC London News.

:00:15. > :00:19.Residents of a tower block in Camden have told the BBC that they don't

:00:20. > :00:22.feel safe in their homes, despite urgent fire safety work

:00:23. > :00:27.The work took place on the Chalcots estate following the Grenfell Tower

:00:28. > :00:30.fire, but some residents feel that it's incomplete.

:00:31. > :00:33.The council disputes this, and says it was signed off

:00:34. > :00:37.by independent building control officers and the blocks are safe.

:00:38. > :00:48.What was the urgent work that needed doing at the Chalcots?

:00:49. > :00:52.Camden council invited the London Fire Brigade to carry out an

:00:53. > :01:00.enhanced fire safety check inside these four towers. All 23 storeys,

:01:01. > :01:03.in which around 3000 people live. What the Fire Brigade identified was

:01:04. > :01:08.that urgent internal safety work needed to be done to the communal

:01:09. > :01:13.areas. That work involved a range of measures that basically would stop

:01:14. > :01:16.fire spreading from one part of a building to another. The council say

:01:17. > :01:20.the work is done and signed off but residents have told us they don't

:01:21. > :01:26.feel safe, that the work is shoddy and incomplete and could put lives

:01:27. > :01:29.at risk. What did you see at the state? I was taken ruddy block

:01:30. > :01:34.called Taplow by a resident. Camden council asked us to stop recording

:01:35. > :01:39.but I managed to take some photographs. Here is one of a fire

:01:40. > :01:46.door leading to the blog's only fire escape. You can see seals designed

:01:47. > :01:52.to stop smoke and fire peeling off. That was repeated several times in

:01:53. > :01:55.the building. The fire door doesn't shut and another one took only a

:01:56. > :01:59.minute to close, it should take just a few seconds. In the stairwell, the

:02:00. > :02:03.only fire escape, these stairs should have nonslip strips that are

:02:04. > :02:08.luminous in the dark, they were either missing or degraded. And that

:02:09. > :02:11.was repeated throughout the building. There were a host of other

:02:12. > :02:16.problems that viewers can look at online. Inside the flat, what's

:02:17. > :02:21.interesting is that fire safety checks don't seem to have been done

:02:22. > :02:26.to the same extent. One resident asked me to come in and she showed

:02:27. > :02:32.me exposed electrical cables boxed in with cardboard. Experts have told

:02:33. > :02:37.us that that should be a metal box and that it poses a huge fire safety

:02:38. > :02:42.risk. What have the council and Fire Brigade had to say? We put the

:02:43. > :02:48.specific allegations to the council and invited the leader live.

:02:49. > :02:51.Unfortunately, she declined the invitation. The council said urgent

:02:52. > :02:55.work to contain fires was completed and signed off by independent old in

:02:56. > :02:56.control from two other London boroughs and the council worked

:02:57. > :03:01.closely with the Fire Brigade. A food delivery company says it's

:03:02. > :03:04.bringing in new safety measures to protect its drivers

:03:05. > :03:06.from being attacked It follows a series of acid attacks

:03:07. > :03:09.where delivery drivers have been Around 450 assaults were recorded

:03:10. > :03:15.by police in London last year. London is currently in the midst

:03:16. > :03:34.of a moped crimewave. Three weeks ago, delivery driver

:03:35. > :03:36.Jabeed Hussain was the first victim in a series of five acid attacks

:03:37. > :03:42.in 90 minutes in north-east London. I was just running

:03:43. > :03:52.on the street like a crazy. In the last year, the Met Police

:03:53. > :03:55.recorded more than 16,000 incidents involving motorised two-wheeled

:03:56. > :03:59.vehicles, compared with So the company is

:04:00. > :04:08.adding new features. After I'm marked delivered,

:04:09. > :04:11.I get the opportunity to give some feedback to the network

:04:12. > :04:13.as to whether the delivery We have had delivery feedback

:04:14. > :04:18.for a few weeks now, so prior to the terrible attacks,

:04:19. > :04:22.but adding safety concerns as an explicit option

:04:23. > :04:30.as a response to those incidents. Deliveroo drivers are all

:04:31. > :04:32.self-employed, so not entitled They also all use their own bikes

:04:33. > :04:39.and mopeds to deliver. Do you feel guilty at all

:04:40. > :04:41.that they are putting themselves they don't get repairs

:04:42. > :04:46.to bikes, things like that? As I said before, the safety

:04:47. > :04:48.of our riders is the most important thing to us,

:04:49. > :04:51.and it's our responsibility as a company to step up our efforts

:04:52. > :04:55.so that they can feel safe For Jabeed, the fear

:04:56. > :05:03.of being attacked again means he now won't work after ten o'clock

:05:04. > :05:06.at night, and he says other The mother of Sally Anne Bowman,

:05:07. > :05:15.who was murdered in Croydon in 2005, says her daughter's remains have had

:05:16. > :05:19.to be exhumed after her grave Linda Bowman told a newspaper that

:05:20. > :05:25."cruel people" had targeted the 18-year-old's burial place four

:05:26. > :05:29.times in six months. She said her daughter's

:05:30. > :05:32.remains were removed An investigation into the Croydon

:05:33. > :05:38.tram crash is likely to call for a system to be introduced

:05:39. > :05:41.to prevent serious accidents due to travelling at excessive

:05:42. > :05:44.speed at high-risk spots. Seven people died and 51

:05:45. > :05:49.were injured in November last year. The Rail Accident Investigation

:05:50. > :05:52.Branch says it's also likely its final report will call

:05:53. > :05:55.for improvements to windows and doors to keep passengers

:05:56. > :06:03.inside the coaches. The World Athletics Championships

:06:04. > :06:06.get under way tomorrow - the biggest event of its kind

:06:07. > :06:08.in the UK since London It's hoped it'll inspire the next

:06:09. > :06:13.generation to give athletics a go. Jessica Creighton has been to meet

:06:14. > :06:17.some of the children getting active This is not your typical

:06:18. > :06:26.athletics venue but, for these young people,

:06:27. > :06:28.this is their stage, London 2017 will be the biggest

:06:29. > :06:33.athletics event this country has I'm here in west London

:06:34. > :06:38.with these young people, who have seen their stars

:06:39. > :06:41.on the screen and now they're going to try

:06:42. > :06:53.the sport out for themselves. Who better to give some tips

:06:54. > :06:57.than a European gold medallist? You can meet new friends

:06:58. > :07:00.from the estate that you probably wouldn't have met on a normal day,

:07:01. > :07:04.and something like this encourages them to communicate with each other,

:07:05. > :07:08.make it fun and enjoyable. These World Championships will see

:07:09. > :07:10.some of the biggest stars in athletics competing on the track,

:07:11. > :07:13.and there's none bigger Normally, I think what happens

:07:14. > :07:24.is they might watch the Olympics or they might watch Mo Farah

:07:25. > :07:27.or Usain Bolt and then sometimes there's not somewhere for them to go

:07:28. > :07:29.and they'll forget about it until four years later,

:07:30. > :07:32.when it's the next Olympics We wanted to try and capture that

:07:33. > :07:36.spirit at the right time. They've tried athletics

:07:37. > :07:37.for themselves. Now they'll be able to watch

:07:38. > :07:39.the pros in action live at the World Championships

:07:40. > :07:42.through this project. And who knows how many might go

:07:43. > :07:52.on to emulate their heroes? Now it's time for a check on the

:07:53. > :07:57.weather with Elizabeth Rizzini. We've seen some sunny spells around

:07:58. > :08:01.today and also some showers. What this photo doesn't show

:08:02. > :08:03.you is how windy it is, and it's going to stay pretty

:08:04. > :08:06.blustery for much of The south-westerly wind really

:08:07. > :08:10.strengthening at times. Some more spells of brightness

:08:11. > :08:12.and sunshine, but always quite a lot of cloud,

:08:13. > :08:15.and still a small chance of one or two fleeting showers,

:08:16. > :08:17.particularly out towards the west. Top temperatures of

:08:18. > :08:21.around 21 or 22 Celsius. The wind still quite

:08:22. > :08:25.gusty into this evening, some late spells of sunshine,

:08:26. > :08:28.and overnight tonight we should stay Temperatures down to

:08:29. > :08:34.around 14 or 15 degrees. The wind will start to ease off

:08:35. > :08:37.as we head into tomorrow morning. We start on a nice,

:08:38. > :08:44.bright, sunny note. We keep sunny spells

:08:45. > :08:46.around through the day. Crucially, the winds

:08:47. > :08:49.are going to be lighter tomorrow, so it will feel pleasantly warm

:08:50. > :08:51.in the sunshine. Still quite breezy though,

:08:52. > :08:53.and temperatures slightly higher as well, 23 degrees will be the peak

:08:54. > :08:56.of the temperatures For the weekend, it will feel

:08:57. > :09:01.a couple of degrees cooler, Some of our temperatures away

:09:02. > :09:04.from the towns dipping back Saturday, some sunny spells,

:09:05. > :09:07.some afternoon showers. On Sunday, it's looking

:09:08. > :09:13.dry with some sunshine. Riz Lateef will be here at 6:30

:09:14. > :09:18.with our evening news programme. You can also take a look at our

:09:19. > :09:22.website at the usual address - The BBC Proms celebrates

:09:23. > :09:52.the extraordinary film music in a concert to mark

:09:53. > :09:57.his 85th birthday.
