:00:00. > :00:24.On BBC One we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:25. > :00:26.Good afternoon and welcome to BBC London News.

:00:27. > :00:34.The gas supply to hundreds of homes in four tower blocks in South

:00:35. > :00:36.London has been cut due to safety fears.

:00:37. > :00:38.Residents are being evacuated to temporary accommodation

:00:39. > :00:41.The issue with the gas supply was discovered during

:00:42. > :00:43.an investigation into safety prompted by the Grenfell Fire.

:00:44. > :00:56.Simon Jones is there - Simon, what have residents been told?

:00:57. > :01:02.Yes, after they were told this by Southwark council they discovered

:01:03. > :01:07.potentially another big problem. Gas was supplied to these buildings when

:01:08. > :01:10.they were constructed from about 1968 until 1970 but in new and there

:01:11. > :01:14.had been a nearby tower block where there had been a gas explosion and

:01:15. > :01:19.that cause part of the building to collapse on top of each other and

:01:20. > :01:24.that led to four deaths. In the week that -- wake of that gas was fitted

:01:25. > :01:27.in buildings like these ones and there are needed to be improvements

:01:28. > :01:31.to the structure of the building. Southwark council believed that had

:01:32. > :01:35.actually happened. But now they have done further checks and they are not

:01:36. > :01:40.convinced this building was actually strengthened as it was supposed to

:01:41. > :01:44.be, so potentially if there were a gas explosion it could be very

:01:45. > :01:48.serious. So that is why they have decided to turn off the gas supplies

:01:49. > :01:53.for these four buildings straightaway. Residents have been

:01:54. > :01:57.sent a letter saying in the coming weeks they will need to be evacuated

:01:58. > :02:01.as the work is due to be carried out. The council says it recognises

:02:02. > :02:04.this will cause a big problem for a lot of people but they say the

:02:05. > :02:08.safety for the public has to be the number one priority.

:02:09. > :02:10.I totally understand residents are worried,

:02:11. > :02:12.and I really understand why they are worried.

:02:13. > :02:16.What I would like to see to reassure residents is that as soon as we knew

:02:17. > :02:19.about the issue with the gas, we have turned that gas supply off

:02:20. > :02:21.to make sure residents are safe as they possibly can be.

:02:22. > :02:23.There will be an inconvenience unfortunately as a consequence

:02:24. > :02:26.of that, but we are working round the clock to get

:02:27. > :02:29.a more permanent fix in around this as well.

:02:30. > :02:33.I've been speaking to some of the residents and some of them are very

:02:34. > :02:37.upset that potentially they have been living in these buildings for

:02:38. > :02:39.years when they have not been safe. In the meantime the council is

:02:40. > :02:44.giving people a electrical hot plates so they can carry on cooking,

:02:45. > :02:47.but they save people need a hot shower they will need to go to

:02:48. > :02:52.nearby leisure centres, so it will be a big inconvenience for people.

:02:53. > :02:55.Some are very concerned about it but the council is stressing it has to

:02:56. > :02:57.put safety first. That was Simon with that report.

:02:58. > :03:00.Four people have been treated for breathing in smoke

:03:01. > :03:03.following a fire on a Bakerloo line train this morning.

:03:04. > :03:04.Oxford Circus station was evacuated.

:03:05. > :03:07.The fire was caused by an electrical fault under one of the carriages.

:03:08. > :03:09.Transport for London says it's investigating,

:03:10. > :03:27.A 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman have been arrested

:03:28. > :03:29.over the murder of a schoolboy in Croydon, who was attacked

:03:30. > :03:34.Jermaine Goupall, who was 15, was with his friends

:03:35. > :03:36.in Thornton Heath on Tuesday night, when they were confronted by three

:03:37. > :03:41.A post mortem's revealed he died of a stab wound to his leg.

:03:42. > :03:46.It's been billed as the ultimate experience for Abba superfans -

:03:47. > :03:51.a new restaurant in Waterloo - where else?

:03:52. > :03:57.Where diners will be entertained with songs

:03:58. > :04:04.But some local residents aren't happy, saying it's being built

:04:05. > :04:07.on land that's supposed to be set aside for social housing.

:04:08. > :04:10.Well, I'm at the edge of the Coin Street residential development just

:04:11. > :04:13.between the IMAX and Oxo Tower near the South Bank.

:04:14. > :04:16.The plans are for this car park to be turned into a

:04:17. > :04:18.restaurant and nightclub, based on the Abba Mamma Mia musical.

:04:19. > :04:20.The resident as you can see I'm not a

:04:21. > :04:23.I'm joined by one of them here this morning.

:04:24. > :04:31.This land has been empty for almost 20 years and in that 20 is not one

:04:32. > :04:33.single flat or house has been built for social housing which is the

:04:34. > :04:35.remit of the developers group, so they have decided to build a

:04:36. > :04:40.nightclub, which is wholly unacceptable, bearing in mind that

:04:41. > :04:45.could be 4000 or 5000 people per week pouring out onto our local

:04:46. > :04:49.street and causing noise pollution. They say they will be mindful of

:04:50. > :04:52.local residents. There is no longer line that can tell people how to get

:04:53. > :04:55.home so when they leave here it will be uncontrollable, to control 500

:04:56. > :04:59.people per night seven nights a week, drinking for up to five hours.

:05:00. > :05:02.If you look around you we are completely surrounded by residents,

:05:03. > :05:06.up to 2000 students at at Kings College, flats down luggage rack, so

:05:07. > :05:11.the main entrance to this place could be 50 yards from my bedroom

:05:12. > :05:15.window, my daughter's bedroom window and start secondary school in

:05:16. > :05:19.August. Thank you. The developers say they believe it is an exciting

:05:20. > :05:24.development and it will have some impact on locals, but in a positive

:05:25. > :05:26.way, and the developers believe this will also be positive for the local

:05:27. > :05:36.community and they will be mindful of local residents.

:05:37. > :05:38.Now, think of National Parks in this country

:05:39. > :05:40.and you might be picturing somewhere like the Lake District...

:05:41. > :05:42.Rather than here in our busy, congested capital.

:05:43. > :05:45.But today plans have been unveiled aimed at making London the world's

:05:46. > :05:47.first National Park City - that is, greener,

:05:48. > :05:53.Our environment correspondent Tom Edwards explains.

:05:54. > :05:59.This Woodbury weapons in Hackney, hidden gem. London is one of the

:06:00. > :06:08.greenest cities on the planet, but for how long? -- this is Woodbury

:06:09. > :06:10.wetlands in Hackney. Today the mayor is promoting more green spaces and

:06:11. > :06:13.will do that by making London and national Park city. Part of it is

:06:14. > :06:19.bringing it all together but part of it is making sure we give this area

:06:20. > :06:24.of policy the gravitas it deserves, and I want developers, counsellors,

:06:25. > :06:28.Londoners, tourists, to recognise London pays a huge attention to

:06:29. > :06:31.green spaces, and us being a National Park city will be

:06:32. > :06:41.important. I send the message today that the direction of travel is that

:06:42. > :06:43.way. London's green spaces support 14,000 species and the city has 3.8

:06:44. > :06:46.million gardens. 47% of the area of the capital is made up of green

:06:47. > :06:54.space and waterways. The mayor wants that to rise to 50%. Making cities

:06:55. > :06:57.greener is not new. This is well and garden city, built in 1920. A

:06:58. > :07:04.National Park city would mean tightening planning and making green

:07:05. > :07:07.space polity priority. Has been described as a turbo economy,

:07:08. > :07:10.jostling for position amongst other world cities. For those of us who

:07:11. > :07:15.work and live in the city, perhaps you want a city which is greener,

:07:16. > :07:18.slower, and the National Park city I think gives an idea that London

:07:19. > :07:24.could be very different for those who live, work and play here. These

:07:25. > :07:29.are very early days. The criteria to become a National Park city haven't

:07:30. > :07:32.even been decided yet. The big challenge will be protecting green

:07:33. > :07:35.space and also meeting increasing the man's for more housing. Tom

:07:36. > :07:40.Edwards, BBC London News. Film footage of the so-called

:07:41. > :07:42."Battle of Lewisham" - that was lost for decades -

:07:43. > :07:50.has been rediscovered. It shows the National Front march

:07:51. > :07:53.that took place in South London Up to 5000 local people

:07:54. > :07:58.and activists stopped the march The footage features

:07:59. > :08:06.in an exhibition at Let's get the weather with Lucy.

:08:07. > :08:09.Good afternoon. A dry and bright start with plenty of sunshine around

:08:10. > :08:13.and our weather watchers have been capturing the scene is local to

:08:14. > :08:17.them. This one from Rebecca. Into the afternoon it will become

:08:18. > :08:20.increasingly cloudy. And next front pushing and from the north-west,

:08:21. > :08:23.which will introduce some cloud but also some drizzle. You can see the

:08:24. > :08:27.best of the brightness has certainly been in the south-east this morning.

:08:28. > :08:31.And there is this front you can see in the charts making its way that

:08:32. > :08:39.will introduce the cloud and sherry outbreaks of rain overnight. We will

:08:40. > :08:41.then start to see that cloud edging in and I think the further east you

:08:42. > :08:48.are is holding on to the best of staying at a maximum of about 22

:08:49. > :08:51.Celsius. Through this evening and overnight, we will see the rest of

:08:52. > :08:55.that cloud pushing, some sherry outbreaks of rain and a breeze

:08:56. > :09:02.starting to pick slightly as well. -- some sherry outbreaks. It will be

:09:03. > :09:06.a fairly cloudy start tomorrow. Some bits of rain and Russell first

:09:07. > :09:10.thing. Then becoming drier into the afternoon. Some good spells of

:09:11. > :09:15.sunshine developing and it will feel pleasant in any sunshine with highs

:09:16. > :09:20.of 22 Celsius. Sunday looks decent again, staying dry with plenty of

:09:21. > :09:39.brightness and sunny spells. That is it for now.

:09:40. > :09:42.Being on stage or screen doesn't faze these celebrities.

:09:43. > :09:47.But how will they manage on MasterChef?

:09:48. > :09:49.You need a bigger toaster. Do you think?

:09:50. > :09:55.It will be tasty. Are you telling me?

:09:56. > :09:57.Are you letting me loose with a blowtorch? Argh!

:09:58. > :10:01.You guys can throw anything you want at me and I'm ready for it.
