:00:00. > :00:13.On BBC One, we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:14. > :00:15.Good afternoon and welcome to BBC London News.

:00:16. > :00:21.A London MP is calling for a change in passport regulations,

:00:22. > :00:24.after being stopped with her daughter at UK border control,

:00:25. > :00:27.because they didn't share the same surname.

:00:28. > :00:30.Tulip Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn,

:00:31. > :00:33.says she's since found hundreds of thousands of other women have

:00:34. > :00:35.been asked to produce marriage or birth certificates,

:00:36. > :00:47.Just tell us briefly what happened to use. I was coming back from

:00:48. > :00:53.holiday with my husband and my daughter and as we came through the

:00:54. > :00:56.Eurostar border checks, the French ones separated me from my husband,

:00:57. > :01:01.who does not have the same surname as me and my daughter has my

:01:02. > :01:05.husband's surname. We went through the first set of control checks but

:01:06. > :01:09.when we came to the UK border control they said, who was this

:01:10. > :01:13.girl? I was very taken aback because I didn't expect that kind of

:01:14. > :01:18.question. The truth is, my daughter doesn't share my last name or look

:01:19. > :01:22.like me, to be honest. They repeated, and I said this is my

:01:23. > :01:25.daughter. They said, where is your marriage certificate and birth

:01:26. > :01:30.certificate? I wasn't carrying either. I said, my husband is in the

:01:31. > :01:34.queue. There was intense questioning to try and figure out who this child

:01:35. > :01:40.was, when my daughter was sitting there saying mama the whole time.

:01:41. > :01:46.You discovered since then many women experience this because many women

:01:47. > :01:49.don't take the husband's surname? Yes, 600,000 women have been stopped

:01:50. > :01:54.since 2010 precisely for this reason, that they don't share the

:01:55. > :01:58.same surname as the husband. But it is a growing trend. A lot of women

:01:59. > :02:02.don't take their husband's surname after marriage. It looks like this

:02:03. > :02:07.problem won't go away. The Home Office have told us it does have a

:02:08. > :02:11.duty to prevent possible child trafficking and border force staff

:02:12. > :02:14.do need to carry out those checks. It is very important we protect

:02:15. > :02:19.vulnerable children, that is my number one priority. But I think if

:02:20. > :02:24.we had the names of both parents on a passport for a child under the age

:02:25. > :02:28.of 16 that it would probably save time at the borders, so they could

:02:29. > :02:31.concentrate on actually catching real criminals, instead of making

:02:32. > :02:34.parents feel like criminals when all they are doing is going on holiday

:02:35. > :02:36.with their child. Thank you very much for joining us.

:02:37. > :02:38.Detectives investigating an attack on an 82-year-old cancer patient

:02:39. > :02:41.in east London have described it as "beyond comprehension".

:02:42. > :02:45.Ahmet Dobran suffered a broken back, after being dragged to the floor,

:02:46. > :02:47.beaten, and having his watch and gold bracelet stolen

:02:48. > :02:54.Police have released a picture of three men they want to speak

:02:55. > :03:02.Prosecutors are considering charging the man - known only as Nick -

:03:03. > :03:04.who claimed a paedophile ring operated at the

:03:05. > :03:10.Scotland Yard spent almost 18 months examining claims that senior

:03:11. > :03:12.politicians and other public figures sexually assaulted children,

:03:13. > :03:22.The case has since been dropped and police have now passed a file

:03:23. > :03:24.to the Crown Prosecution Service, which will decide whether "Nick"

:03:25. > :03:28.should be charged with perverting the course of justice.

:03:29. > :03:30.Well, of course, pupils across the capital have been heading

:03:31. > :03:37.It could mean a new uniform, new class,

:03:38. > :03:40.Yvonne Hall has been meeting students at the Nightingale

:03:41. > :03:42.Academy in Edmonton, who've been acting as translators

:03:43. > :03:46.for classmates who can't yet speak English.

:03:47. > :03:49.Well, starting secondary school can be a scary enough experience anyway,

:03:50. > :03:56.but if you don't speak any English, it can be really daunting.

:03:57. > :03:59.Here at Nightingale Academy in Edmonton, they are taking part

:04:00. > :04:04.in a scheme to train pupils from different countries

:04:05. > :04:07.as interpreters, to help new pupils arriving from those countries.

:04:08. > :04:09.So far, 21 students have taken part in the interpreter

:04:10. > :04:14.Asen, you have been here for two years now.

:04:15. > :04:16.Why are you training to be an interpreter?

:04:17. > :04:19.Because I know what the feeling is like.

:04:20. > :04:21.When I came here two years ago in Year 8,

:04:22. > :04:24.I didn't know enough English to talk to other people and I just

:04:25. > :04:28.Plus, you do other activities like you go to trips

:04:29. > :04:30.and you have afternoon parties, you watch maybe some stuff.

:04:31. > :04:36.Well, the scheme has been co-ordinated by Dagmara Fieldler.

:04:37. > :04:40.Why did you bring the scheme in here at Nightingale Academy?

:04:41. > :04:43.We have quite a lot of new students arriving at our school

:04:44. > :04:48.I thought they would benefit from having someone who could

:04:49. > :04:52.translate in their own language and explain how everything works.

:04:53. > :05:00.Well, so far pupils from nine different countries are helping

:05:01. > :05:05.fellow pupils who arrive here, but 44 languages are spoken at this

:05:06. > :05:08.school and there are plans now to expand the scheme to train more

:05:09. > :05:14.A group of London firefighters who were among those

:05:15. > :05:17.who risked their lives responding to the Grenfell Tower tragedy

:05:18. > :05:20.have been enjoying a break in Cornwall this week,

:05:21. > :05:27.North Kensington Station's blue watch searched the building while it

:05:28. > :05:30.They've been treated to the trip to the coast

:05:31. > :05:33.by Penzance Community Fire Station, as Tamsin Melville reports.

:05:34. > :05:44.For these London firefighters, a bit of light relief is very welcome.

:05:45. > :05:47.They're from North Kensington blue watch, and were involved in tackling

:05:48. > :05:52.No one wants to see that, a disaster of that scale.

:05:53. > :06:00.But we were down there to do a job and I think we did what we could.

:06:01. > :06:05.This week, Cornish colleagues are keen to show solidarity

:06:06. > :06:09.and are treating them to break full of sand, surf and even a bit of sun.

:06:10. > :06:12.We offered to raise money within the community,

:06:13. > :06:15.so did that by a charity ladder climb, a Just Giving page,

:06:16. > :06:18.and help from the local community all round,

:06:19. > :06:22.really, that have been very kind to donate stuff.

:06:23. > :06:25.It's just enabled us, and for them to enjoy Cornwall

:06:26. > :06:28.and sort of open up and be able to chat and feel rewarded

:06:29. > :06:33.Things like this prove that the human support is amazing, it is.

:06:34. > :06:45.It's, you know, the support and love that we've felt

:06:46. > :06:49.Penzance firefighters aren't the only ones

:06:50. > :06:57.Last week, another community effort - Cornwall Hugs Grenfell -

:06:58. > :06:59.saw a group, including survivors of the blaze, enjoy

:07:00. > :07:10.There are plans for both to repeat the invitations.

:07:11. > :07:12.The former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been fined almost

:07:13. > :07:16.?400 and banned for two months for breaching FA betting rules.

:07:17. > :07:20.He was seen eating a pie during February's FA

:07:21. > :07:23.Cup loss to Arsenal, after a bookmaker had offered odds

:07:24. > :07:25.of 8/1 that he would eat a pie on camera.

:07:26. > :07:27.It was alleged he intentionally influenced a football

:07:28. > :07:38.Time for the weather - Elizabeth Rizzini is here.

:07:39. > :07:43.I hear it's not looking good over the next few days?

:07:44. > :07:49.No, unsettled for the rest of the week and it will feel a lot more

:07:50. > :07:53.autumnal than today. A lovely start to this morning, very promising

:07:54. > :07:56.indeed, as you can see from this weather watcher's picture. Some

:07:57. > :08:00.sunshine coming through the trees. The sunshine has largely disappeared

:08:01. > :08:03.because we have this band of cloud working its way in from the west and

:08:04. > :08:07.we have even seen some showers. I think much of the rest of this

:08:08. > :08:11.afternoon is likely to be dry, maybe even some brighter spells at times.

:08:12. > :08:19.The westerly breeze will pick up by the end of the day. Temperature is

:08:20. > :08:22.nothing special, 19 or maybe 20 Celsius in central London. Showers

:08:23. > :08:26.never too far away. Particularly through this evening and overnight,

:08:27. > :08:31.a band of showers pushing their way down from the north-west. It is a

:08:32. > :08:36.cold front, but we won't be into the cold air until Saturday. Still a

:08:37. > :08:40.mild night, 14-15 to start tomorrow. As you can see, it will be quite wet

:08:41. > :08:43.tomorrow morning. Wet for your journey into work, particularly in

:08:44. > :08:48.southern areas of the capital, where we expect the heaviest of the brain.

:08:49. > :08:53.No matter where you are across the London area, some outbreaks of rain

:08:54. > :08:55.on and off through the course of the day. Most likely for Northern areas

:08:56. > :09:02.in the afternoon, the heavier burst or even a thunderstorm. Quite windy

:09:03. > :09:06.and temperatures largely academic, 17-18. That is not the end of the

:09:07. > :09:09.bad weather. On Saturday we are also expecting some heavy showers to

:09:10. > :09:14.develop. There will also be some sunny spells around as well.

:09:15. > :09:17.Probably a dry and bright start to the day on Sunday, but as we head

:09:18. > :09:19.into the afternoon and evening it will turn wet and windy from the

:09:20. > :09:21.West, a blustery will turn wet and windy from the

:09:22. > :09:28.West, a blustery start from next week. Umbrellas at the ready! Thank

:09:29. > :09:33.you. That is all from us. We will be back at 6:30pm. And on our website

:09:34. > :09:34.you can get much more. Bye-bye for
