0:00:00 > 0:00:13replace Priti Patel as International Development Secretary.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15Welcome to BBC London News. Development Secretary.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18I'm Sara Orchard. Development Secretary.
0:00:18 > 0:00:20A remembrance service has taken place in New Addington this morning
0:00:20 > 0:00:26to pay tribute to those who died in the Croydon Tram crash last year.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28The tram overturned speeding on a tight corner at Sandilands
0:00:28 > 0:00:29killing seven people and injuring 51.
0:00:30 > 0:00:36Marc Ashdown has more.
0:00:36 > 0:00:43One by one they laid flowers. To pay tribute. To reflect. To support each
0:00:43 > 0:00:48other. And to remember their loved ones. Seven Londoners who exactly
0:00:48 > 0:00:52one year ago boarded a tram and lost their lives. There has not been a
0:00:52 > 0:00:57minute of any hour of any day in this last year he has not been in
0:00:57 > 0:01:02our thoughts. One families suffering shared by an entire community, every
0:01:02 > 0:01:06face here has a story. Bereaved families, survivors and those who
0:01:06 > 0:01:12simply whether in this quiet corner of London devastated by tragedy. I
0:01:12 > 0:01:17year may have passed but emotions are still raw.Sometimes I cry and
0:01:17 > 0:01:23nobody knows how to feel. 23 days before today I have had a of
0:01:23 > 0:01:27flashbacks. I had one this morning like I was on the tram again. Since
0:01:27 > 0:01:31that they have not been on a tram. On a cold and drizzly morning I saw
0:01:31 > 0:01:39some amazing people do some truly courageous things.A difficult day
0:01:39 > 0:01:43for the emergency services who one year ago battled in horrendous
0:01:43 > 0:01:49conditions trying to save lives. Everyone was working so hard
0:01:49 > 0:01:55together. To do the best that we could. For the people on the tram.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59And number of our staff are members of this community, they have worked
0:01:59 > 0:02:02for the Ambulance Service for a number of years and I think they
0:02:02 > 0:02:09have felt the impact of that as much as the people directly involved. The
0:02:09 > 0:02:12plinth here and another to be installed near the crash site is to
0:02:12 > 0:02:16be a permanent memorial inscribed with the names of those who perished
0:02:16 > 0:02:18so they can be permanently remembered.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21So one year after the tram crash, how are the survivors coping?
0:02:21 > 0:02:24And what changes are being made to the tram system to make it safer?
0:02:24 > 0:02:29Here's our transport correspondent Tom Edwards
0:02:29 > 0:02:34I remember thinking to myself, he's going a bit quick.Matthew still
0:02:34 > 0:02:37doesn't remember what happened in the tram crash one year ago. He
0:02:37 > 0:02:43suffered a severe head injury and it's been a tough 12 months.I still
0:02:43 > 0:02:48suffer from a bout of depression, memory loss, I have trouble
0:02:48 > 0:02:54remembering things a lot and mood swings, my wife said I have changed
0:02:54 > 0:03:02a lot in the last year. So it's been difficult all round. He has not
0:03:02 > 0:03:07worked as an HGV driver since. He was on board the tram when it
0:03:07 > 0:03:12overturned. A preliminary report found it was travelling at 46 mph on
0:03:12 > 0:03:18the corner where the speed limit is 13. Unusually investigators have
0:03:18 > 0:03:23already made recommendations. The report into this incident is close
0:03:23 > 0:03:26to completion. As yet we still don't know why the driver was speeding on
0:03:26 > 0:03:33this very tight corner here. The early indications from the
0:03:33 > 0:03:38investigators are that they will recommend some kind of automatic
0:03:38 > 0:03:42mechanism to prevent speeding and also a system that will be able to
0:03:42 > 0:03:48detect if the driver isn't paying attention. Since the crash it has
0:03:48 > 0:03:54emerged a number of drivers had fallen asleep at the controls. This
0:03:54 > 0:03:58equipment has now been stalled on all trams, it uses infrared to
0:03:58 > 0:04:03protect the driver is falling asleep. Warning signs and further
0:04:03 > 0:04:08speed restrictions are so now in place on tight corners. Solicitors
0:04:08 > 0:04:10say they want any more recommendations to be implemented
0:04:10 > 0:04:16quickly.I think the detail will be important for them to understand
0:04:16 > 0:04:19exactly what happened and how it happened and the next step is to
0:04:19 > 0:04:23make sure it never happens again. The legacy from this has got to be
0:04:23 > 0:04:27that this does not happen again. I have always said it's important that
0:04:27 > 0:04:33trams are treated more like trains than they are like buses. It's a key
0:04:33 > 0:04:38feature and I hope those lessons have been learned. So was the
0:04:38 > 0:04:41changes are already being made on the London trams, for Matthew and
0:04:41 > 0:04:49many others it will take much longer to get his life back.
0:04:49 > 0:04:50The Surrey coroner says he will consider
0:04:50 > 0:04:53whether the inquests of the victims of the Guildford Pub
0:04:53 > 0:04:54bombings should resume.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58Five people were killed in the IRA blast in 1974.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00The sister of one of the four men convicted and then later
0:05:00 > 0:05:02acquitted has called for the inquests to re-start.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05The families of the victims are now being consulted on their views.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08Hundreds of south London homes have been without gas for five days
0:05:08 > 0:05:10after heating systems in four tower blocks were turned off
0:05:11 > 0:05:12due to safety concerns.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14It is the third time in two years residents have been affected
0:05:14 > 0:05:17by issues with the communal heating in four blocks on the
0:05:17 > 0:05:20Grantham Road Estate.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23About 360 homes were cut off after a potential leak was detected.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Hyde Housing, who have provided electric heaters, said
0:05:26 > 0:05:31it was "doing everything it can".
0:05:31 > 0:05:33The sport of karate will make its Olympic
0:05:33 > 0:05:35debut at Tokyo 2020, but the hopes of some
0:05:35 > 0:05:40of England's finest youngsters was hanging in the balance.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43The team was left on the verge of financial ruin, but their Olympic
0:05:43 > 0:05:45dreams appear to have been revived after a London-based billionaire
0:05:45 > 0:05:48offered to pay off their debts.
0:05:48 > 0:05:54Chris Slegg reports.
0:05:54 > 0:05:58England under 21 karate team have just returned from the World
0:05:58 > 0:06:02Championships in Tenerife with three medals to their name.I was so happy
0:06:02 > 0:06:07because we have all worked so hard and it's paid off.The mood is more
0:06:07 > 0:06:10upbeat than a few weeks ago when we reported on their financial
0:06:10 > 0:06:16problems.They were preparing for the biggest moment of the young
0:06:16 > 0:06:19sporting lives when Monarch airlines collapsed leaving them among
0:06:19 > 0:06:24thousands of passengers out of pocket.Financially it put us close
0:06:24 > 0:06:27to bankruptcy.Watching the report at home was a cutie billionaire and
0:06:27 > 0:06:35former owner of Nottingham football club.I saw it on TV and I felt the
0:06:35 > 0:06:40same when I used to play in the old days, in my country, I know how they
0:06:40 > 0:06:51feel so I was talking to my friend and I told him, can we do something
0:06:51 > 0:06:58to help them?So he offered to pay off the team's debts of £40,000.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02Absolutely overwhelmed. Everybody is overwhelmed, such a delightful
0:07:02 > 0:07:09gesture, such a wonderful gesture. To offer to cover the cost.He
0:07:09 > 0:07:13stepped in, it is overwhelming that he has decided to do this for us.I
0:07:13 > 0:07:16cannot thank that man enough, it helped all of us because some of us
0:07:16 > 0:07:20were not able to make the trip because of that happening and it
0:07:20 > 0:07:26caused a lot of stress for a lot of our tweets. He has also said he will
0:07:26 > 0:07:31consider helping fund the team in the run-up to Tokyo 2020.I will
0:07:31 > 0:07:34help them, if they need my help and my support I will try to help them
0:07:34 > 0:07:40again. I love in general and I would like to help and support them. The
0:07:40 > 0:07:42Olympic dream is still alive.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Now lets get a check on the weather with Elizabeth Rizzini.
0:07:50 > 0:07:54Lovely sunrise this morning for many of us but that was all that was
0:07:54 > 0:07:59pretty, it was damp and cold, really quite chilly earlier on this
0:07:59 > 0:08:03morning, all of the cloud cover as well has stuck around for most of
0:08:03 > 0:08:06us, few outbreaks of drizzle as well and there will be more drizzle I
0:08:06 > 0:08:11think many areas as we through to the end of the day, drifting its way
0:08:11 > 0:08:14southwards, very few spots of rain here and they are but most of us
0:08:14 > 0:08:18staying dry and it could brighten up towards parts of Buckinghamshire,
0:08:18 > 0:08:22Berkshire and sorry. An awful lot of cloud around, feeling quite chilly
0:08:22 > 0:08:29from any of us, top temperatures 11 or 12. Overnight tonight, clear
0:08:29 > 0:08:33skies or a time or two, temperatures dropping away, then rising again
0:08:33 > 0:08:39into tomorrow morning, we will start the day tomorrow on a milder note,
0:08:39 > 0:08:43more outbreaks of drizzle, grey and dull start to the day but tomorrow a
0:08:43 > 0:08:47lot more cheery through the afternoon, we should see some
0:08:47 > 0:08:51brightness and sunshine develop, fairly brisk and chilly
0:08:51 > 0:08:57north-westerly wind but temperatures up into double figures, 10-12d. Not
0:08:57 > 0:09:01looking too bad but if you're going out on Friday night be aware we are
0:09:01 > 0:09:04likely to see some rain and it could turn out to be quite heavy, that'll
0:09:04 > 0:09:08stick around and to Saturday, over the weekend we are going to see a
0:09:08 > 0:09:14northerly wind develop, it should be mostly dry after Saturday morning,
0:09:14 > 0:09:17lots of sunshine on Saturday but feeling cold, highs of only 9
0:09:17 > 0:09:19degrees.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22That's about it from me, Riz Lateef will be here
0:09:22 > 0:09:23with our 6:30pm evening programme.
0:09:23 > 0:09:29But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
