0:00:16 > 0:00:17Welcome to BBC London News. so it's goodbye from me -
0:00:17 > 0:00:18I'm Alex Bushill. so it's goodbye from me -
0:00:18 > 0:00:21The Labour MP for Kensington and Chelsea has apologised
0:00:21 > 0:00:25for writing a racist article about a Tory London Assembly member.
0:00:25 > 0:00:30In a blog post in 2010, Emma Dent Coad labelled Shaun Bailey
0:00:30 > 0:00:37a "token ghetto boy" - in order to explain herself
0:00:37 > 0:00:40she today said she was only quoting the views of others.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44Our Political Editor Tim Donovan has more.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Back in 2010, Shaun Bailey USA Conservative London assembly member
0:00:47 > 0:00:50now was fighting for the seat of Hammersmith in the general election.
0:00:50 > 0:00:54Emma Dent Coad wrote a critical blog about him and the Conservative
0:00:54 > 0:01:00Party, effectively accusing Shaun Bailey of being used by the party
0:01:00 > 0:01:04and by David Cameron, the then leader to create a positive image of
0:01:04 > 0:01:13diversity. Now, today, she has said that her use of words, two ghetto
0:01:13 > 0:01:17boy, was only repeating what others have been saying at the time, and
0:01:17 > 0:01:22she denied it was racist. If he feels offended by it, of course I
0:01:22 > 0:01:24apologise. Of course I do. If somebody actually read the blog,
0:01:24 > 0:01:28they would see that I was putting other people's sources and what
0:01:28 > 0:01:32people were saying at the time. She says the unearthing of these remarks
0:01:32 > 0:01:36from seven years ago is designed to undermine and discredit her and
0:01:36 > 0:01:41distract from a piece of work she has done research on poverty and
0:01:41 > 0:01:45social exclusion in Kensington, the borough of the brain cell tower
0:01:45 > 0:01:50tragedy. Shaun Bailey told me here this morning that he was distinctly
0:01:50 > 0:01:53unimpressed by what he described as a half-hearted apology.-- Grenfell
0:01:53 > 0:01:58Tower. Well, she did not really apologise. All she did was reiterate
0:01:58 > 0:02:02the points and try to blame other fictitious people. But it is not
0:02:02 > 0:02:06about me. It is about young black people up and down the country. Many
0:02:06 > 0:02:11community struggled to feel involved and attacks like this at the core of
0:02:11 > 0:02:15people's police in the political arena prevent people from being
0:02:15 > 0:02:19involved.It makes them afraid. The Conservatives do not appear at this
0:02:19 > 0:02:23stage to be wanting to let this live. They have written to the
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, ordering him to discipline Emma Dent
0:02:26 > 0:02:27Coad as soon as possible.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30A man has been jailed following a hit and run
0:02:30 > 0:02:33in South London that left a woman paralysed.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36Pascoe Petgrave, who's 21, has been found guilty of causing
0:02:36 > 0:02:37serious injury by dangerous driving.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39The car he was driving ploughed into two women
0:02:39 > 0:02:41in Norwood High Street in May 2016.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43He's been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46And also disqualified from driving for two years.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49When Crossrail is up and running it will carry two
0:02:49 > 0:02:50hundred million passengers, increase capacity and
0:02:50 > 0:02:55reduce journey times.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Now ahead of some services beginning next year, our
0:02:57 > 0:03:06Transport Correspondent Tom Edwards has been given special
0:03:06 > 0:03:11access to the tunnel, and all on foot.
0:03:11 > 0:03:16This is a rare look at what will one day be an everyday commute. Our
0:03:16 > 0:03:24guide is Greg Purcell. When a Bond Street is finished, 137,000
0:03:24 > 0:03:29passengers a day will use this station and these platforms. This is
0:03:29 > 0:03:35where the passengers will be, eventually.Oh, right.Yes, that
0:03:35 > 0:03:40will be the platforms and they go the full length of the tunnel.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44Platform is over 250 metres long. You have the platform screen door
0:03:44 > 0:03:49and behind that is the track. And so we will stand here and get on the
0:03:49 > 0:03:55train and get off.Yes, the doors will open there. It will take one
0:03:55 > 0:03:59minute to travel by train to the next station. For us, it takes a
0:03:59 > 0:04:06little longer, as we passed between different contractors.Above us,
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Oxford Street. Yes, Oxford Street and the simple line of dollars,
0:04:09 > 0:04:13which you can just hear. The tunnels are finished but there are still
0:04:13 > 0:04:181400 workers on site.Soon the power lines will go in. The Metro section
0:04:18 > 0:04:20means you have quite a lot of stations that are quite close
0:04:20 > 0:04:27together, so between Bond Street is between 801,000 metres.Before we
0:04:27 > 0:04:30allowed onto the tracks, there are text to make sure that engineering
0:04:30 > 0:04:35trained on and running. We have 500 metres to go before we get into
0:04:35 > 0:04:41Tottenham Court Road. These are the platforms at Tottenham Court Road.
0:04:41 > 0:04:46What is striking here is just how long these platforms are. When it is
0:04:46 > 0:04:51finished, 24 trains per hour will come through here. The walk took
0:04:51 > 0:04:57about an hour. It will take one minutes by train. Services are due
0:04:57 > 0:05:02to start running through central London at the end of next year.
0:05:02 > 0:05:04Rush-hour never looked so empty, did it?
0:05:04 > 0:05:06All this week we're looking at charities from London
0:05:06 > 0:05:09and the home counties, benefiting from Children
0:05:09 > 0:05:10in Need donations.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Today, we look at the work of 'Bump to Babe' -
0:05:13 > 0:05:14a parenting project in Southwark.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16They're approach is simple - they provide trained volunteers
0:05:16 > 0:05:18to help any parent who's finding it hard to cope.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21Here's Sharon's story.
0:05:21 > 0:05:28Would you like to eat something else? Eliot surprised us. He came
0:05:28 > 0:05:33out a month early, so we weren't at all ready for that. And then it just
0:05:33 > 0:05:36kind of snowballed. It was overwhelming. Every day was a new
0:05:36 > 0:05:40diagnosis. Every day was something else that they were saying he would
0:05:40 > 0:05:49never do. I am Sharon and I am Eliot's mum. I wasn't coping at all.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53There is so much more that you have to take into account. You have to be
0:05:53 > 0:05:57a physiotherapist and speech therapist as well as being a mum and
0:05:57 > 0:06:03doing mum things. And you lose you. Get your teeth into it. I have
0:06:03 > 0:06:09visitor told me about the charity when Eliot was about four or five
0:06:09 > 0:06:14months old. I didn't like to think of myself as that kind of person,
0:06:14 > 0:06:21admitting you are failing at motherhood.I have been volunteering
0:06:21 > 0:06:26since 2009. I first met them about nine months ago. At the time, Eliot
0:06:26 > 0:06:31had just had an operation on his fingers. Generally, people were here
0:06:31 > 0:06:35trying to make him reach different milestones. And so I came in and I
0:06:35 > 0:06:44thought I wouldn't come in asking to see him do things. What I think I do
0:06:44 > 0:06:51is just have fun with him. I just be playful with him.Eliot adorers
0:06:51 > 0:06:58coral. Absolutely. They have got a weird bond. It is very sweet.I
0:06:58 > 0:07:06can't explain what he makes me feel, how I feel, he's just grown. Grown
0:07:06 > 0:07:09and I love him.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13So that is just one example of where your Children In Need money goes.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15Remember, you can join us on the big night this
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Friday, November the 17th.
0:07:17 > 0:07:18Pudsey will be there too, of course,
0:07:18 > 0:07:20at Warner Brothers Studio tours in Hertfordshire,
0:07:20 > 0:07:21along with some very special guests.
0:07:21 > 0:07:28To be there too, just tell us what you're doing to raise money.
0:07:28 > 0:07:34Now let's check on the Weather with Kate Kinsella.
0:07:34 > 0:07:41A quick clarification on top story. We should have said that the article
0:07:41 > 0:07:46written by Emma Dent Coad has been accused of being racist.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49written by Emma Dent Coad has been accused of being racist.
0:07:49 > 0:07:54It has been a cloudy day. We have seen some glimmers of sunshine, but
0:07:54 > 0:07:57on the whole it has been rather grey and we will hang on to this cloud as
0:07:57 > 0:08:02we head further through this afternoon. It is feeling a little
0:08:02 > 0:08:06less cold compared to yesterday. The wind has switched round and is
0:08:06 > 0:08:11coming from the south-west. It is not very strong. It is a light wind.
0:08:11 > 0:08:17Slightly less cold air. Not quite so chilly. Still rather grey and a
0:08:17 > 0:08:22maximum temperature of 10 Celsius. Conditions don't change overnight.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Hanging onto that cloud and also some rain. We could also see some
0:08:25 > 0:08:29mist and fog developing. Tricky driving conditions tomorrow. The
0:08:29 > 0:08:34temperature does not change from today's maximum. Nine Celsius the
0:08:34 > 0:08:38maximum. A murky start tomorrow and the to take its time to lift. The
0:08:38 > 0:08:42cloud should lift a little higher through the afternoon, leading to
0:08:42 > 0:08:47some brighter spells and it stays mild tomorrow as well. A maximum of
0:08:47 > 0:08:5113 Celsius. Similar day tomorrow as we head into Thursday. Stay
0:08:51 > 0:08:55reasonably mild. Not until Thursday night that this cold front makes its
0:08:55 > 0:09:00way south. Not too much rain, but once it clears as we head into
0:09:00 > 0:09:05Friday it does introduce fresh air so does get a little bit colder. It
0:09:05 > 0:09:08will certainly feel a bit fresher for the end of the week, but it
0:09:08 > 0:09:12means we will seek more sunshine. A chilly night Friday into Saturday
0:09:12 > 0:09:14with frost first thing for the weekend.
0:09:14 > 0:09:15That's about it from me.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17Riz will be here with our 6:30 evening programme.
0:09:17 > 0:09:27But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
