0:00:00 > 0:00:09and on BBC One we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

0:00:09 > 0:00:14Welcome to BBC London News.

0:00:14 > 0:00:20I'm Victoria Hollins.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23BBC London has learnt that the Met has paid a five figure sum to settle

0:00:23 > 0:00:26out of court a claim of unlawful arrest and police brutality.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28A middle aged couple in Camden accused the police of assaulting

0:00:28 > 0:00:31them in their own home and maliciously accusing them

0:00:31 > 0:00:33of assaulting two of the police officers who forced their way

0:00:33 > 0:00:34into their flat.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37The Met has not apologised or accepted liability for the incident.

0:00:37 > 0:00:45The couple have been speaking exclusively to Alex Bushill.

0:00:45 > 0:00:50As the police approached their flat in the middle of the night,

0:00:50 > 0:00:53the middle aged couple inside said that they had no idea

0:00:53 > 0:00:54what was about to happen.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57They say they were assaulted and unlawfully arrested

0:00:57 > 0:00:59by the police and in their own home.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00They kicked the door.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02They pushed the door open.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Two of them they went in.

0:01:05 > 0:01:15My husband came in at that moment to say what was going on.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17When he was there, they started punching my husband.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19They punched him in the eye.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Then they grabbed him there and threw him against a brick

0:01:21 > 0:01:23wall where he hit his head.

0:01:23 > 0:01:28And then they put him down.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33Her and her husband were arrested and assaulted for obstructing the

0:01:33 > 0:01:39same police officers, they say, gave her these injuries.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44The worst thing is this scar is for four years in my heart. I don't

0:01:44 > 0:01:47think it will ever disappear. Why did the police come here in the

0:01:47 > 0:01:51first place? The police say that they heard reports of a drug deal

0:01:51 > 0:01:57taking place. That CCTV TV showed one of the people involved in the

0:01:57 > 0:02:01deal entering the estate to go to the flat. But every time the lawyers

0:02:01 > 0:02:05have asked to see evidence of that, the police failed to produce it.

0:02:05 > 0:02:20The Met released a statement saying... They say a man was given a

0:02:20 > 0:02:23penalty notice for disorder and possession of cannabis but the

0:02:23 > 0:02:26family say that there were no drugs at the property. The lawyers have

0:02:26 > 0:02:30said that the police have paid out a figure of to the family, that they

0:02:30 > 0:02:35should just say sorry. It seems the sensible thing to do.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40Had they apologised at the police station, when they realised that

0:02:40 > 0:02:43something had gone terribly wrong, the clients would never have taken

0:02:43 > 0:02:52leekal action. The experience has left Aldurie,

0:02:52 > 0:02:58traumatised and suicidal. I have tried take tablets many times

0:02:58 > 0:03:05under psychologist treatment. And... Yes... Sorry.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09It was very tough. Above all, she now fears those who

0:03:09 > 0:03:14are there to protect us.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Prison inspectors have issued a damning report on Wormwood Scrubs-

0:03:16 > 0:03:19for the third year in a row.

0:03:19 > 0:03:20on Wormwood Scrubs -

0:03:20 > 0:03:21for the third year in a row.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24They found high levels of serious violence and chronic staff shortages

0:03:24 > 0:03:25at the west London jail.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26at the West London jail.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28They also said that there were filthy conditions.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30The Ministry of Justice says it's taken "decisive action"

0:03:30 > 0:03:31to address the problems.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Jim Wheble has more.

0:03:33 > 0:03:40Wormwood Scrubs, a long history, dating back to 1891. But it's recent

0:03:40 > 0:03:45history has seen three damning reports in three successive years by

0:03:45 > 0:03:48the prison inspector. Latest criticism describes a persistence of

0:03:48 > 0:03:54failure at the prison which holds more than 1200 men. Pervasive staff

0:03:54 > 0:03:58shortages and a dramatic increase in assaults. Not good enough, according

0:03:58 > 0:04:03to the man who wrote the report. Prisons should not be intolerable.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08They should be places where people, yes, they serve a sentence, which

0:04:08 > 0:04:13they deservedly receive from the court but there should not be

0:04:13 > 0:04:17further punishment meted out by virtue of the conditions or lack of

0:04:17 > 0:04:21safety or availability of drugs in jails and that sort of thingment

0:04:21 > 0:04:25what they should have the is the opportunity to turn their lives

0:04:25 > 0:04:28around. That surely is in everyone's interest.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32The report goes on to criticise the conditions of the outside areas as

0:04:32 > 0:04:38well. Litter scattered, attracting rats and cockroaches. Probation

0:04:38 > 0:04:43officers have been criticised for not properly managing high-risk

0:04:43 > 0:04:47offenders, released from the prison. In the statement, the Ministry of

0:04:47 > 0:04:57Justice said...

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Jim with Wheble, BBC London News.

0:05:05 > 0:05:06Jim with Wheble, BBC London News.

0:05:06 > 0:05:14The Mayor of London says he's pleased Brexit talks have confirmed

0:05:14 > 0:05:15The London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames has recorded

0:05:15 > 0:05:17the highest healthy life expectancy for men -

0:05:17 > 0:05:1969.9 years, while the Orkney islands saw the highest

0:05:19 > 0:05:21for women - 73 years.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23The figures showing a person's life span spent in good health differ

0:05:23 > 0:05:27by as much as 18 years across parts of the UK, with Dundee

0:05:27 > 0:05:28and Manchester recording the lowest levels for men

0:05:28 > 0:05:30and women respectively.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32The Mayor of London says he's pleased Brexit talks have confirmed

0:05:32 > 0:05:35EU citizens in living in the Capital will have the right to stay.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38He made the comments as he wrapped up his south

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Asian tour in Karachi - From there our Political

0:05:40 > 0:05:41Correspondent Karl Mercer sent this report.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44For most of Karachi it was business as usual this morning.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46This is a city of 15 million people, the

0:05:46 > 0:05:56commercial capital of Pakistan, and a city that continues to grow.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00It's also home to Mazari-e-Quaid, the mausoleum for the country's

0:06:00 > 0:06:10founding father, Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16In a solemn ceremony, the Mayor laid

0:06:16 > 0:06:22a wreath.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25As everywhere else in Pakistan, it's a visit that's attracted huge

0:06:25 > 0:06:30attention.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34And a huge security presence.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37While the Mayor is ending his south Asian tour, we learn today

0:06:37 > 0:06:41that the UK will be starting detailed trade talks on Brexit.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46I'm really pleased that finally, 16 months on, EU citizens, Londoners

0:06:46 > 0:06:49who contribute hugely to our city, and our country, appear to have been

0:06:49 > 0:06:52given the guarantee I wanted, which is them having rights

0:06:52 > 0:06:55after we have left the EU that they have now but

0:06:55 > 0:06:58here is where it gets tough for the European Union and my worry

0:06:58 > 0:07:00is that with all the evidence we have so far

0:07:00 > 0:07:05is that the Government's not prepared to do a good negotiation

0:07:05 > 0:07:08with the EU, they have no idea what the destination is,

0:07:08 > 0:07:10let alone how we get there.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Like Boris Johnson when he toured India, the Mayor couldn't resist

0:07:12 > 0:07:15picking up the bat here in Pakistan, a light hearted end to his six-day

0:07:16 > 0:07:17trip.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19What are the three words that stick in your memory?

0:07:19 > 0:07:22The key thing I've been saying to people in London

0:07:22 > 0:07:30for the last 16 months is London is open and around the world.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Finally, his innings was over, stumped by the current Pakistan

0:07:33 > 0:07:36cricket captain but the trip is over too, the Mayor and the poster behind

0:07:36 > 0:07:38him, though, hoping to leave a simple message.

0:07:38 > 0:07:44Karl Mercer, BBC London News in Karachi.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Now the weather with Elizabeth Rizzini.

0:07:49 > 0:07:49Good afternoon.

0:07:49 > 0:07:50Good afternoon.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52It's feeling very cold indeed out there.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54We've got a chilly, brisk north-westerly wind blowing

0:07:54 > 0:07:56but lots of sparkling winter sunshine around as well.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58A bit more cloud out towards the north-west.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Here, we may see one or two wintry showers,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03but for the most part we should stay dry as we head through

0:08:03 > 0:08:05the rest of the afternoon.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Temperatures between two and four Celsius, but you have to factor

0:08:07 > 0:08:09in the wind-chill as well.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Overnight tonight, clear skies.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12It's going to stay dry.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14There will be a widespread frost developing into tomorrow

0:08:14 > 0:08:16morning and temperatures widely below freezing.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20Some of the more rural prone spots down as low as perhaps -3 degrees.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23A very nippy start to the weekend, but there will be lots of sunshine

0:08:23 > 0:08:28around again tomorrow morning.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31We'll keep the sunshine for much of the rest of the day,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34perhaps a bit more cloud spilling in from the west as we head

0:08:34 > 0:08:35through the afternoon.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Winds slightly lighter than today, and highs again of only

0:08:38 > 0:08:40three or four Celsius.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41Sunday, the weather gets very interesting.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44We've got a Met Office weather warning out for the strength

0:08:44 > 0:08:47of the winds on Sunday, as this system sweeps its way

0:08:47 > 0:08:48eastwards throughout the country.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52So we could be looking at some gusts of up to 40 to 50 miles an hour

0:08:52 > 0:08:54across the London area.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Perhaps some of this rain falling as snow just through the early

0:08:57 > 0:09:00hours of the morning, and then turning back to rain as it

0:09:00 > 0:09:01pushes its way east.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03On Sunday, some very early snow maybe, turning back to rain

0:09:03 > 0:09:08and we start to get some milder air.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Some very strong gusts of wind through the morning and then quite

0:09:11 > 0:09:16unsettled and cold again for the start of next week.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18That's about it from me.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20We'll be here with our 6:30pm evening programme.

0:09:20 > 0:09:30But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
