0:00:15 > 0:00:17I'm Claudia-Liza Armah.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Boxing Day sales have started across the capital,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21with retailers carefully watching the numbers to see if consumers

0:00:22 > 0:00:24are watching their wallets.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Caroline Davies has been speaking to some shoppers in North London.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Hello and welcome from Brent Cross shopping Centre.

0:00:31 > 0:00:40This is actually the oldest shopping centre in the UK.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42It's seen over 40 years of shopping sales after Christmas.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45It doesn't seem to have slowed it down, there have been shoppers

0:00:45 > 0:00:48queueing outside from 8am this morning and we have been

0:00:48 > 0:00:49speaking to some of them.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I'm quite ashamed to say we were here from about 8:15am

0:00:52 > 0:00:53because we weren't sure about the traffic.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57So were you standing outside in the cold waiting for it to open?

0:00:57 > 0:01:00No, we've a very sensible and came in through the side door

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and went and had a copy.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03It's been very good, actually.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06There's always some good discounts this time of year so I'm always

0:01:06 > 0:01:08looking to get the best deal I can for my money.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11I've got a list, I'm doing it and I'm leaving.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12It's manic.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Do you think you will be buying more or less in the sales this

0:01:15 > 0:01:16year than last year?

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Maybe more?

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Now, I'm joined by Tom Nathan, who is the general manager

0:01:20 > 0:01:21here at Brent Cross.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Tom, how has this Christmas season been for you?

0:01:24 > 0:01:28It started off relatively slowly, the snow didn't help.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30But then the last week, week and a half it's

0:01:30 > 0:01:31been extremely busy.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Of course, Black Friday is quite a big deal here in the UK,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36how does that compare to the Boxing Day sales?

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Black Friday is growing every year, but Boxing Day is the big one.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Today, it's all about going out, spending some time with family

0:01:42 > 0:01:44and friends and bagging a bargain for me.

0:01:44 > 0:01:45Thank you very much.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48The sales will continue into January and we will be finding out how

0:01:48 > 0:01:51the rest of London has done in the shopping sales later today.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56Police have released cctv video showing a pensioner being robbed

0:01:56 > 0:01:58of her savings in east London.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01It happened in July, when the 69-year-old victim

0:02:01 > 0:02:03withdrew £1000 from her bank in Ilford.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05This footage shows three suspects following the elderly

0:02:05 > 0:02:07woman into a lift.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Two of them distract her while the third,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11can be seen searching her handbag.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Police are appealing to anyone who may recognise

0:02:13 > 0:02:18the suspects to contact them.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Back in 2003 a Tube worker at Oval Station decided to cheer up

0:02:21 > 0:02:23stressed commuters by writing an inspirational quote

0:02:23 > 0:02:26on the station's notice board.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29The response was so positive staff have continued to do

0:02:29 > 0:02:32that every day since, creating a trend and earning them

0:02:32 > 0:02:34a fan club all over the world.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38Sarah Harris went to meet them.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Everyday for the last 14 years, staff at the Oval Tube station have

0:02:42 > 0:02:46written an inspiring quote their message board,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49with classical music playing on their loudspeakers,

0:02:49 > 0:02:55this has started a trend at stations across the capital.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

0:02:58 > 0:03:06It was Tony's idea to spread a little bit of wisdom and calm

0:03:06 > 0:03:08to peoples' busy commuter.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The whole idea was a simple one.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14The thought was, stations need not be sterile places.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16And it was an opportunity to work with our customers

0:03:16 > 0:03:17and also engage with them.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21The popularity of social media has meant the staff at the Oval have

0:03:21 > 0:03:22become recognisable faces all over the world.

0:03:22 > 0:03:31I'm famous in Australia, China, Malaysia and lately it's Argentina.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Through good times and bad, the messages go up

0:03:33 > 0:03:38to reassure people.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40The station manager says it stopped vandalism

0:03:40 > 0:03:41and made local people proud.

0:03:41 > 0:03:46Travelling on the Tube is not easy.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49It's very busy, crowded and people are always rushing from A to B.

0:03:49 > 0:03:55So I think whatever helps is a good thing.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Staff say they will carry on spreading their little bit

0:03:58 > 0:04:01of positivity, adding some serenity to busy London lives.
