0:00:00 > 0:00:00in their relationship on a visit to Beijing.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14Welcome to BBC London News.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16I'm Alpa Patel.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Can churches help stop knife crime?

0:00:19 > 0:00:21One church in South London says it can.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23It's been working with ex-gang members to help them

0:00:23 > 0:00:26turn their lives around.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29But the church has been criticised for being like a cult.

0:00:29 > 0:00:37Noel Philips has been investigating.

0:00:38 > 0:00:44We are inside South London, in a church where religion is being used

0:00:44 > 0:00:49to reform ex-gang members like 26-year-old Kevin, who was recently

0:00:49 > 0:00:54in prison for attempted murder.Last year and this year is actually the

0:00:54 > 0:01:04first time I haven't been into prison. So it's something that's

0:01:04 > 0:01:11working.These gangsters have swapped the streets for the church.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15We have had times when people are dropping the drugs and knives on the

0:01:15 > 0:01:22altar. Last week, I was praying for a boy, he was crying.Just two years

0:01:22 > 0:01:26ago, this boy, who was in our pastor, was facing a 10-year

0:01:26 > 0:01:32sentence for a string of violent crimes.I went to jail for some

0:01:32 > 0:01:37robberies, possession of a bladed article. I was charged with Mullin

0:01:37 > 0:01:43laundering of £30,000. I feel like if I'd come here before, before I

0:01:43 > 0:01:46was involved in that kind of stuff, I'd have been shown the right mental

0:01:46 > 0:01:51ship and guidance to not do those things.A far cry from his past

0:01:51 > 0:01:55life. The 22-year-old joined a gang when he was just 12. Do you remember

0:01:55 > 0:02:02the first time you carried a knife? I do, yes, aged 13. I took it to

0:02:02 > 0:02:04school, but although I didn't do anything with it it was there for

0:02:04 > 0:02:14protection. It's like reckless abandonment. You don't care about

0:02:14 > 0:02:16what can happen, you don't care about the consequences, you live in

0:02:16 > 0:02:20the minute, so you get the knife, you put it in your pocket. You don't

0:02:20 > 0:02:24think the police down the road or what if I get into a pub and

0:02:24 > 0:02:27actually have to use this.Bustard one is the man for transforming

0:02:27 > 0:02:35their lives. -- pastor Tobi is the man for transforming their lives.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39These people are drug dealers, the authorities don't know what to do

0:02:39 > 0:02:43right now. They looked to me like they are confused. So call it a

0:02:43 > 0:02:49church, call it whatever you want to call it, it has to be the rule of

0:02:49 > 0:02:53somebody.But people on social media have accused the 37-year-old pastor

0:02:53 > 0:02:59of running a cult-like ministry, something which he denies. At his

0:02:59 > 0:03:04home, Pastor Tobi has ex-offenders living with him from his church.

0:03:04 > 0:03:11They need shelter. That's not shelter from the gang people chasing

0:03:11 > 0:03:16them, the mind. The mind is the factory for everything and I've got

0:03:16 > 0:03:22to do that. Again, I stumbled into this. It's not a plan. It's not

0:03:22 > 0:03:26something we sat down and said we're going to have, but I deal with cases

0:03:26 > 0:03:33and ask myself where do I want him to go?The Metropolitan Police has

0:03:33 > 0:03:39welcomed Tobi three -- Pastor Tobi's approach and Sony want more churches

0:03:39 > 0:03:44like this to help reduce knife crime.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48For the first time since the second world war, MPs look set to move out

0:03:48 > 0:03:49of the Palace of Westminster.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51It's while major renovation work is carried out.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52Simon Jones reports.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55It may be a palace, but one that's in desperate need of repair.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Anyone who's had building work done on their home will know

0:03:58 > 0:04:00it can be stressful, but MPs are now facing the prospect

0:04:00 > 0:04:04of moving out for several years while it's carried out.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06It will cost billions, with both the Commons and the House

0:04:06 > 0:04:09of Lords having to up sticks, most likely to another

0:04:09 > 0:04:10part of Whitehall.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Many MPs say it's only option.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17The building's crumbling, it needs rewiring, and it's not safe.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21One said that conditions were worse than down the pit.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23There are some steel props holding the roof up.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27It looks a bit like the place I used to work in before I came

0:04:27 > 0:04:30into this building - and that was Maltby colliery.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Other MPs are reluctant to go, arguing the work should

0:04:33 > 0:04:35be done around them.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37There's also concern about the cost.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40The Lords still have to give their approval.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43And with the proposed departure not until 2025,

0:04:43 > 0:04:48that's after the next general election, the next Parliament may

0:04:48 > 0:04:50take a different view.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Simon Jones reporting there.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55A prisoner who was stabbed at Wormwood Scrubs yesterday has

0:04:55 > 0:04:58been named as 25-year-old Saleh Khader.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Police have launched a murder investigation after he was stabbed

0:05:01 > 0:05:03yesterday afternoon at the prison.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06A number of concerns were raised over the safety

0:05:06 > 0:05:11of prisoners and staff at Wormwood Scrubs last year.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Now to an extraordinary woman who spends her days working

0:05:14 > 0:05:17as a firefighter in Yorkshire - but also plays for one

0:05:17 > 0:05:19of London's top football teams.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Nicola Hobbs will be in goal for the London Bees

0:05:22 > 0:05:26in the FA Cup this weekend, after making one of her regular very

0:05:26 > 0:05:29long journeys from her other job.

0:05:29 > 0:05:35Emma Jones reports.

0:05:35 > 0:05:41Teaching youngsters about the Fire Service.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44This is Nicola Hobbs' day job with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue

0:05:44 > 0:05:47but she also happens to be a goalkeeper for the London Bees who

0:05:47 > 0:05:48train and play in North London.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51I sometimes take annual leave on Friday and go down Thursday to

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Sunday for my game, and training between,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57or I travel up the night before making sure that I'm all set

0:05:57 > 0:06:01to go for work on the Friday.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Both I love to do, I love my job and I love

0:06:04 > 0:06:07football and I'll do anything in my power to make that work.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10At least two times a week Nicola makes the

0:06:10 > 0:06:14four-hour drive from one of her jobs to the other.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19Real proof of her determination to succeed in both of her roles.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22I was adamant to do what I wanted to do, which is anything,

0:06:22 > 0:06:24and I wanted to join the Fire Service

0:06:24 > 0:06:26and be a goalkeeper at the

0:06:26 > 0:06:29top-flight, so I worked really hard to make that happen.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31It just makes you work harder for what you want

0:06:31 > 0:06:34and I hope that inspires younger girls to do the same.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Having another job on top of playing football is

0:06:36 > 0:06:39the reality for many women who want to play the game.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41But it doesn't stop Nicola's team-mates and her

0:06:41 > 0:06:46manager being impressed with her dedication.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51All of that experience of the clubs she has played for at

0:06:51 > 0:06:53different tiers, internationally, doing what she does with the Fire

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Service and having to travel down as frequently as she does,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58I think it's a testament to her hard work and

0:06:58 > 0:07:00determination.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02She's a really good role model for everybody, really.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04It just shows you can have a dual career and

0:07:04 > 0:07:05you can be successful in

0:07:05 > 0:07:08sport and in the Fire Service, or any other role you can.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10She has to manage her time appropriately.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12It is hard work and she does do a lot of

0:07:12 > 0:07:17hours but she is reaping the rewards,

0:07:17 > 0:07:19success on the pitch and off the pitch.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23This Sunday the London Bees play host to one of the

0:07:23 > 0:07:25top teams in the country, Chelsea, in the FA Cup,

0:07:25 > 0:07:30so a busy Nicola can expect to be very busy in gold

0:07:30 > 0:07:32trying to keep her team in the competition.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Emma Jones, BBC London News.

0:07:36 > 0:07:43What an amazing woman! Good luck to Nicola this weekend. Wasn't it

0:07:43 > 0:07:48amazing last night, with the super blue moon? How the weather looking?

0:07:48 > 0:07:54Is Elizabeth Rizzini. -- here is Elizabeth Rizzini.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Today, it's all about the sunshine under bracingly cold brisk

0:08:02 > 0:08:05north-westerly wind. Still some spells of brightness out there for

0:08:05 > 0:08:10the rest of the day, but more in the way of cloud. Highs of 5-7, but

0:08:10 > 0:08:15quite a lot of wind chill to factor in. Through this evening's rush hour

0:08:15 > 0:08:21the cloud will thicken out towards the eastern areas. The skies will

0:08:21 > 0:08:26clear once again, but once more the risk of some showers across parts of

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Essex in Hertfordshire. More cloud we head into the start of the day

0:08:30 > 0:08:34tomorrow. Winds fairly brisk. Temperatures above freezing tomorrow

0:08:34 > 0:08:37morning. Out towards eastern areas there is always going to be more

0:08:37 > 0:08:41cloud tomorrow and the winds will be slightly stronger. Further west we

0:08:41 > 0:08:44will see the best of the brightness and possibly some sunshine. The

0:08:44 > 0:08:50winds will be lighter tomorrow so it will feel a bit more like eight

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Celsius than it does today. As we head into the weekend we have some

0:08:53 > 0:08:57wet weather. This weather front is pushing its way in from the West. It

0:08:57 > 0:09:02will stall over us. Most of the rain will be light and patchy but quite a

0:09:02 > 0:09:05grim day on Saturday. Feeling cold, outbreaks of drizzle on and off

0:09:05 > 0:09:08during the day and quite a lot of cloud around. We start to

0:09:08 > 0:09:13north-easterly wind as we head into the start of next week and the air

0:09:13 > 0:09:17is going to be cold. It could turn wintry at times.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18is going to be cold. It could turn wintry at times.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Not looking like a bad week ahead.

0:09:21 > 0:09:22That's about it from me.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Riz Lateef will be here with our 6:30pm evening programme.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Bye-bye for now.
