0:00:00 > 0:00:13That's all from the BBC News at One, so it's goodbye from me -

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Welcome to BBC London News. I'm Victoria Hollins.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20A teenager who carried out six acid attacks

0:00:20 > 0:00:24across east London, has been sentenced to 10 years in detention.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27Derryck John from Croydon was 16 at the time of the attacks.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28His accomplice has never been caught.

0:00:28 > 0:00:38Chris Rogers has been at Wood Green Crown Court.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42This is a particularly horrific example of a crime that is on the

0:00:42 > 0:00:49rise in London, particularly in the East End. In the space of 90

0:00:49 > 0:00:53minutes, Derryck John, who was 16 and three quarters at the time,

0:00:53 > 0:00:57attack six careers on their mopeds with the intent of stealing their

0:00:57 > 0:01:02vehicle, spraying a highly corrosive acid towards their helmets in an

0:01:02 > 0:01:07attempt to injure their face. Many of them did sustain injuries. One

0:01:07 > 0:01:13victim told the court, he has been left partially blind. They have

0:01:13 > 0:01:15recovered from their scars, emotionally all victims told the

0:01:15 > 0:01:20court they may never recover. Some are receiving counselling. All have

0:01:20 > 0:01:25been unable to return to work. The judge said he wanted to send out a

0:01:25 > 0:01:29strong message to other people intent on causing harm with acid, by

0:01:29 > 0:01:36giving Derryck John a very long sentence behind bars. They had to

0:01:36 > 0:01:40take into account his troubled childhood, he was in care at the

0:01:40 > 0:01:44time and his age. He warned Derryck John that if you what an adult he

0:01:44 > 0:01:49could have been put behind bars today for 22 years. He received a

0:01:49 > 0:01:52ten and a half year sentence with the possibility of being released

0:01:52 > 0:01:56early on licence. Earlier I asked the police officer in charge of the

0:01:56 > 0:02:00investigation what his reaction was to a sentence that many victims have

0:02:00 > 0:02:06told me was too short. I think we have to look at the

0:02:06 > 0:02:10judge' remarks in sentencing. Obviously Derryck John was an adult

0:02:10 > 0:02:12offenders it would've been a different sentence. Overall we are

0:02:12 > 0:02:17pleased with the sentence. We think it does send a strong message that

0:02:17 > 0:02:23even as youth offender, a ten year plus sentence struck -- sends a

0:02:23 > 0:02:27strong message this will not be tolerated.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30So far Derryck John has refused to tell the police who his accomplice

0:02:30 > 0:02:35was and help them in their ongoing investigation in finding him. The

0:02:35 > 0:02:38police have said today they hope that Derryck John will be reflecting

0:02:38 > 0:02:44on his custodial sentence and may now cooperate with the

0:02:44 > 0:02:45investigation. Chris Rogers.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48A group of homeless people who have taken over

0:02:48 > 0:02:50a building in central London, are preparing to go to court

0:02:50 > 0:02:53to fight a possession order from the landlord in a bid to stay.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56The group, which calls the four-storey building in the West End

0:02:56 > 0:02:58the Sofia Solidarity Centre, says anyone without

0:02:58 > 0:02:59a home is welcome.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03The Victoria Derbyshire programme spoke to a volunteer there.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05OK, so when we have somebody new come in,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07they come in the front door.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08They will be greeted here.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11We will ask them what they need, how they are, the priority...

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Whether they need to go straight to sleep, or eat.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16We have a kitchen down the end there.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18We can provide, and we are providing, hot,

0:03:18 > 0:03:19nutritious food all the time.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22There's tea and coffee.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25We have some medical supplies, and we have people who know how

0:03:25 > 0:03:27to look after people, so if somebody needs some

0:03:27 > 0:03:30attention to wounds or infections, we can do that.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33We've got sleeping areas on the ground floor here,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35and on the first floor.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38We have qualified electricians helping us.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I'm a plumber-builder as well, so...

0:03:40 > 0:03:43We do safety checks every day, make sure there's nothing dangerous,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45no cables to trip over, everything's lit properly,

0:03:45 > 0:03:46so that people don't...

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Yeah, we're keeping people safe.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51If any person comes in with a particular issue,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54there is someone here who already been through that issue.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59We can actually guide people through our own experiences,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01empathy, and listening, so were actually better qualified

0:04:01 > 0:04:03than most people who are qualified.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05We've 100 people here, eating, sleeping comfortably.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07We're saving lives here, and the building's been empty

0:04:07 > 0:04:1015 years, and we can save lives with it.

0:04:10 > 0:04:15It's our moral duty to save those lives.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Westminster Council told us they have "well-established routes

0:04:17 > 0:04:19to help people who may be sleeping rough or homeless via Streetlink.

0:04:19 > 0:04:27Over 400 bed spaces are available each night to help people."

0:04:27 > 0:04:29An advertising campaign urging London's businesses to escape

0:04:29 > 0:04:34Brexit by moving to France has been banned from underground stations.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Transport for London says the ads don't comply

0:04:36 > 0:04:39with its guidelines because they relate

0:04:39 > 0:04:42to matters of public controversy or sensitivity.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45The Normandy Development Agency, which commissioned the images, says

0:04:45 > 0:04:48the campaign was meant to be a humorous way of offering

0:04:48 > 0:04:50a "plan B" to entrepreneurs.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Thousands of students across the capital could be affected

0:04:53 > 0:04:55by strike action during their exams.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58The universities union has warned of another 14 days of action

0:04:58 > 0:05:00between April and June.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04It's over discussions around a change to lecturers' pensions.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07With most London property developers adopting

0:05:07 > 0:05:10a "pile 'em high" policy, the humble bungalow has rather

0:05:10 > 0:05:14fallen out of fashion.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17But with the UK's elderly population predicted to double over

0:05:17 > 0:05:19the next three decades, a recent House of Commons report

0:05:19 > 0:05:21concluded that bungalows could be just what's needed.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Sean Fletcher reports.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25This peaceful street, tucked away from the hustle

0:05:25 > 0:05:28and bustle of Acton, comes as a great surprise to anyone

0:05:28 > 0:05:30who stumbles across it,

0:05:30 > 0:05:35because it consists only of bungalows.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38It's very unusual to find a whole street of them this

0:05:38 > 0:05:41close to the city centre, but since the early 1950s,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44they've been the dream home for many people in retirement.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Building bungalows en masse in suburbia became very

0:05:46 > 0:05:48popular for many years.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51In 1987 alone, there were over 28,000 built.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Last year, though, there were just over 2000,

0:05:55 > 0:05:58so there's been a steep decline.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00It is a lot harder for you to get planning

0:06:00 > 0:06:03permission to build a bungalow than it is to build

0:06:03 > 0:06:04a terraced house.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08London itself hasn't tried to get more people to build bungalows.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11It hasn't tried to stimulate that market.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13But with more and more over 65s living longer,

0:06:13 > 0:06:15their housing needs will need to be met.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18The answer - start building bungalows again.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20This award-winning estate is one of several being built

0:06:20 > 0:06:22or planned in Barking.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24These bungalows provide social housing for elderly

0:06:24 > 0:06:26and disabled residents, and were built on land

0:06:27 > 0:06:30that was just lying dormant.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33One of the residents here lost his leg in an industrial

0:06:33 > 0:06:35accident, so climbing stairs became impossible.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Moving here was ideal.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Sometimes you can't get your leg on, your leg swells up

0:06:41 > 0:06:42and you can't wear your leg.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45So you have to sort of go around on your bum,

0:06:45 > 0:06:49or on your hands and knees, or in a wheelchair or crutches.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54Going upstairs, if you haven't got a stairlift, it's awkward.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56So a bungalow is ideal.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59It's ideal, yeah.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Tom, like most of the residents here, moved from a much bigger

0:07:02 > 0:07:07house, freeing up other properties that could house larger families,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10so building these new bungalows actually made economic sense.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13This actual site, one of eight now, we have managed to get 76

0:07:13 > 0:07:17of these types properties, which has freed up 66

0:07:17 > 0:07:20homes for families.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21And that's really important.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23There's a waiting list, and that's why we're still building.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26We will have over 100 units by the end of the summer,

0:07:26 > 0:07:28which is fantastic.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32Bungalows have faced economic cutbacks and lack of space,

0:07:32 > 0:07:36but they are still places that many elderly see as a dream home.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38So, with support from the Commons, bungalows could be a thing

0:07:38 > 0:07:43of the future as well as the past.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45And you can see the full story on Inside Out

0:07:45 > 0:07:48tonight on BBC 1 at 7.30pm.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Now the weather with Kate Kinsella.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52Good afternoon.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55It's been rather grey and dull Monday so far.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57We've had outbreaks of rain in the form of showers.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Skies have looked a little bit like that across the board.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03We've had one or two brighter spells out there,

0:08:03 > 0:08:05but on the whole it's rather grey, and rather wet as well.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08These showers are going to continue through the afternoon,

0:08:08 > 0:08:11and we could hear a rumble or two of thunder mixed

0:08:11 > 0:08:13in to those as well.

0:08:13 > 0:08:14Fairly breezy out there.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Nothing too strong, but you will notice it

0:08:16 > 0:08:18if you are caught underneath one of those showers.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Not going to be too pleasant.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23The temperature is not bad, around 11 Celsius as a maximum.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Overnight tonight, those showers continue to blow through,

0:08:25 > 0:08:27gradually becoming a little bit fewer and further between.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Drier as we head towards dawn, and we may even get clearance

0:08:30 > 0:08:32of the cloud the further west you are.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Minimum temperature above 0, between 3 and 7 Celsius.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Tomorrow morning, some of us could get a bright start in the West.

0:08:39 > 0:08:40Some brighter spells, at least.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42It's a dry day, less showers around.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Still, though, some patchy cloud.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Temperatures getting up to around 11 again,

0:08:46 > 0:08:49but by the end of the afternoon, that cloud moving away

0:08:49 > 0:08:53eastwards, and we may get a little bit of sunshine.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55As we head through midweek, things start to change a little bit.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56We pick up a south-easterly wind.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Low pressure again heading towards the UK.

0:09:00 > 0:09:01Outbreaks of rain.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05That wind is going to end up quite cold, especially as we head

0:09:05 > 0:09:07towards the end of the week and into the weekend.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Quite an unsettled week.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14Temperatures particularly mild as we head through Wednesday.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17After that, they start to get a little bit lower, and could turn

0:09:17 > 0:09:20a little bit wintry again as we head towards Saturday and Sunday.

0:09:21 > 0:09:22That's about it from me.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Riz Lateef will be here with our 6:30 evening programme.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
