0:00:00 > 0:00:15That's all from the BBC News at One so it's goodbye from me -

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Welcome to BBC London News. I'm Charlotte Franks.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Parents at a west London primary school have said they're

0:00:21 > 0:00:24devastated after being told it plans to close.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Minerva Academy in Paddington, is only half full,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28and is still on a temporary site, with no playground.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Westminster Council says it will ensure every child can

0:00:31 > 0:00:32move to a good school.

0:00:32 > 0:00:41Here's our Education Reporter, Marc Ashdown.

0:00:41 > 0:00:46Schools open, another day of learning ahead,

0:00:46 > 0:00:46something most parents simply take for granted,

0:00:46 > 0:00:49but school days at Minerva Academy in Paddington could be numbered.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Only half full, and based on this woefully inadequate temporary site,

0:00:52 > 0:00:55the head has told parents she plans to shut in the summer.

0:00:55 > 0:01:01It's so stressful, especially for the children, my son has been

0:01:01 > 0:01:03two days he's not eating properly, he is not sleeping good,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05he's telling me, I hate learning.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06How are you feeling?

0:01:06 > 0:01:10Mad, sad.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13I will never forget this school, it's because I've got friends that

0:01:13 > 0:01:14I've known for seven years, six years.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Minerva only opened in 2012, in a letter to parents,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20the head says falling pupil numbers across Westminster has hit funding,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22she says the current site has not helped,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24there is no playground, promises of a brand-new building

0:01:24 > 0:01:28seem to have evaporated.

0:01:28 > 0:01:38It was supposed to be here in Paddington basin,

0:01:38 > 0:01:44apparently, but apparently now there is nothing,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46we were supposed to move how many years ago.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Two, three years ago.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49And everything was behind, behind, behind, and promises.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51And now, no school.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53I wonder where is the new building, what have they done with it.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56Critics will argue this is another example of what they have long

0:01:56 > 0:01:58argued is a fundamental flaw in the government's academies

0:01:58 > 0:02:00programme, new schools are only supposed to open

0:02:00 > 0:02:03where there is a clear basic need for more places

0:02:03 > 0:02:04and in suitable buildings.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Here, it appears, there is neither.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09It follows news that Floreat Brentford is set to close,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13another free school which could not find a permanent home,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15or make the money add up.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Minerva is run by a multi-Academy trust, the Board of Trustees says

0:02:18 > 0:02:20staff are providing a good level of education but for a range

0:02:20 > 0:02:25of factors, the school is no longer financially viable.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27If it does close, the local authority Westminster says

0:02:27 > 0:02:30it's ready to step in to make sure all 89 pupils can go

0:02:30 > 0:02:34to a good school elsewhere.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37A 20-year-old man has been shot to death in East London.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38Police were called to Forest Road in Waltham Forest

0:02:38 > 0:02:41at around 9.30 last night where the man was pronounced

0:02:41 > 0:02:42dead at the scene.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46There have been no arrests.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49A woman's been found guilty of fraud after she posed as a grief-stricken

0:02:49 > 0:02:51survivor of the Grenfell fire in order to obtain cash,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55donations and hotel accommodation intended for real victims.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00The jury at Southwark Crown Court heard that 47-year-old

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Joyce Msokeri was living miles away in Sutton at the time.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08She's due to be sentenced next month.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Motorcycle deaths on the capital's roads are still too high according

0:03:10 > 0:03:12to the London Assembly's Transport Committee.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13Over a quarter of people killed or seriously

0:03:13 > 0:03:15injured on our roads ride a motorbike.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17There are calls for motorcyclists to be able

0:03:17 > 0:03:19to ride in all bus lanes

0:03:19 > 0:03:21and for TfL to develop advanced motorcycle safety training.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Transport for London says its carried out a series

0:03:23 > 0:03:25of measure to reduce the number of serious collisions but recognises

0:03:26 > 0:03:35more needs to be done.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Well, today is News Day for the BBC's annual School Report.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43BBC London has been working with a 6th Form

0:03:43 > 0:03:44student from Romford.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47She wanted to explore if better education in schools around knife

0:03:47 > 0:03:49crime, could help to reduce the number of young

0:03:49 > 0:03:50people getting involved.

0:03:50 > 0:04:00Eighteen-year-old Abbianca has this report.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Hello, I want to explore the reason which the education system can help

0:04:05 > 0:04:13reduce life crime -- knife crime in 2016, I lost a dear friend of mine,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:16 > 0:04:16I went to was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:16 > 0:04:16I went to Scotland was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:16 > 0:04:17I went to Scotland Yard was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:17 > 0:04:17I went to Scotland Yard to was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:17 > 0:04:17I went to Scotland Yard to speak was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:17 > 0:04:18I went to Scotland Yard to speak to was a victim of knife crime.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20I went to Scotland Yard to speak to a senior police detective, who deals

0:04:20 > 0:04:25with knife crime on a daily basis. I asked him if he thought school

0:04:25 > 0:04:28should have compulsory lessons on this issue. What do you think about

0:04:28 > 0:04:32this, do you think this can make a difference?I think it would make a

0:04:32 > 0:04:35difference, we need to change the messaging, we have been saying for

0:04:35 > 0:04:41some time that police on their own are not going to rest and we need to

0:04:41 > 0:04:45ask the right questions and get answers. We need to get into

0:04:45 > 0:04:49communities and young people. Here I am, back at my school, where I will

0:04:49 > 0:04:52be interviewing the head of sick form and some students on the issue

0:04:52 > 0:04:57of tackling knife crime. Some people may carry knives for protection,

0:04:57 > 0:05:01especially because there is other teenagers carrying knives anyway.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05When community centres are shut down and the youth clubs held in them get

0:05:05 > 0:05:09people getting bored, and therefore, joining gangs, because they don't

0:05:09 > 0:05:13have the group where they could have gone to.If I'm being honest,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17schools don't really teach about knife crime is that much, my first

0:05:17 > 0:05:25talk was in year 12, I was 16 when I had my first talk about knife crime.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Do you think these lessons will make a difference and have an impact on

0:05:29 > 0:05:35the younger generation? I am not convinced. I think people who are

0:05:35 > 0:05:41attracted to gangs, and attracted to carrying knives, they have kind of

0:05:41 > 0:05:45fallen out of the education system. There isn't one solution to tackling

0:05:45 > 0:05:50knife crime, but from my interviews, it seems changes in the education

0:05:50 > 0:05:55system could possibly contribute to reduce knife crime. Abbianca, BBC

0:05:55 > 0:05:59School report.

0:06:03 > 0:06:09It's being hailed as AirBnB for your car.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Car and Away is a new parking scheme that's the first of it's

0:06:13 > 0:06:13kind in the country.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Found at Gatwick Airport, customers don't pay to leave their car there,

0:06:16 > 0:06:18instead it's cleaned and rented out to a stranger.

0:06:18 > 0:06:19Helen Drew reports.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22How does this sound for a business idea, park at Gatwick, fly away on

0:06:22 > 0:06:24holiday and your car is rented out while you are gone, the money earned

0:06:24 > 0:06:27covers the cost of the parking and maybe even earns you a profit.I

0:06:27 > 0:06:33don't like it.Why not?I don't want anyone else in my car.Not too keen,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36you own property is your own property.I wouldn't want my car

0:06:36 > 0:06:40rented out while I was not there. The scheme is called Car and Away

0:06:40 > 0:06:44and Nikki is one of the first people to try it, she has flown in from Los

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Angeles to collect her Fiat, which has been rented out for the last

0:06:47 > 0:06:51week.I think, if I've got earning potential, rather than leaving it

0:06:51 > 0:06:55there sitting for a week, for the sake of a few extra miles on the

0:06:55 > 0:06:59clock, it makes sense. This businessman is one of the first to

0:06:59 > 0:07:03rent a car. Were you apprehensive about trying a new idea?I was, I

0:07:03 > 0:07:10was suspicious. At my age, you get suspicious about lots of things. Car

0:07:10 > 0:07:15and Away insures the cars and provides roadside assistance, they

0:07:15 > 0:07:19ask owners to carry out a future ex in terms of safety. We ask them to

0:07:19 > 0:07:25sign they have done the checks, not mechanical, they are simple motoring

0:07:25 > 0:07:31checks.A word of caution: a car is an expensive thing. -- 80 few

0:07:31 > 0:07:35checks.The potential for it to get damaged, you are putting this into

0:07:35 > 0:07:40the hands of strangers. If this takes off, Car and Away hopes to

0:07:40 > 0:07:45expand to other airports later this year.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50Lets get a check on the weather forecast.Rather soggy start of the

0:07:50 > 0:07:52day, band of rain pushing north-east, and behind that band of

0:07:52 > 0:07:55rain, for the rest of the day, sunny spells, and showers.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00Rumble of thunder, some

0:08:00 > 0:08:03could be heavy in nature but a lot of dry weather around, as you can

0:08:03 > 0:08:07see, plenty of sunshine as well, and sunshine will not feel too

0:08:07 > 0:08:13unpleasant. Highs between 11 and 13 Celsius. Heading through the

0:08:13 > 0:08:16evening, and the overnight period, clear skies, showers rumbling on for

0:08:16 > 0:08:20a time through the evening rush-hour. Cloud thickening, maybe

0:08:20 > 0:08:25showery outbreaks pushing in. As we head into the start of the day

0:08:25 > 0:08:30tomorrow. Not too chilly overnight, lows between six and 8 degrees.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Tomorrow, any early rain will clear away quickly and looking at another

0:08:33 > 0:08:36day of sunny spells and showers, wasabi the odd heavy shower at

0:08:36 > 0:08:46times. Most will be quite light, a lot of dry weather, sunshine too. 11

0:08:46 > 0:08:49to 14 degrees. Big drop in to bridge over the course of the weekend, all

0:08:49 > 0:08:58that cold air coming in. Chilly is Saili wind, and we are likely to see

0:08:58 > 0:09:03some snow as well. -- chilly easterly wind. Met Office warnings

0:09:03 > 0:09:08for snow and ice and snow on Sunday, likely to see a few centimetres,

0:09:08 > 0:09:13just about anywhere. Keep an eye on the warnings, all the details on the

0:09:13 > 0:09:18website. Short lived called snap, temperatures back up on Monday.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21That's about it from me.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Asad Ahmad will be here with our 6:30 evening programme.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
