0:00:00 > 0:00:13That's all from the BBC News at One, so it's goodbye from me.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15Welcome to BBC London News. so it's goodbye from me.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18I'm Victoria Hollins. so it's goodbye from me.
0:00:18 > 0:00:21The majority of hundreds of squatters living in a central
0:00:21 > 0:00:24London building have moved out after a judge ruled they had
0:00:24 > 0:00:25no right to be there.
0:00:25 > 0:00:27The four-storey building in Great Portland Street
0:00:27 > 0:00:30was taken over by the group during the cold weather.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32But last week a judge ruled that they should
0:00:32 > 0:00:33leave by 12pm today.
0:00:33 > 0:00:39Helen Drew reports.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Midday was the deadline given for the homeless people who have been
0:00:42 > 0:00:47sleeping here to leave. It came and no bailiffs arrived to evict them.
0:00:47 > 0:00:52They have been here since the beginning of the month, about 150
0:00:52 > 0:00:55people sleeping here. Activists took over the four-storey building on
0:00:55 > 0:01:00Great Portland Street in order to provide shelter. Last week the
0:01:00 > 0:01:05landlords of the building went to court to get evicted and the judge
0:01:05 > 0:01:10gave them that eviction notice. But nobody came evict them. First thing
0:01:10 > 0:01:15this morning there were about 150 people here. At the time of the
0:01:15 > 0:01:19deadline noticed there was still about 100 people here but since that
0:01:19 > 0:01:24time has passed, despite the fact no bailiffs have arrived, they have
0:01:24 > 0:01:29volunteered to go, almost everybody has left and most of the people you
0:01:29 > 0:01:33can see over my shoulder our volunteers. We don't know why the
0:01:33 > 0:01:39bailiffs have not arrived. We have spoken to the Mayor of London, his
0:01:39 > 0:01:44office said that outreach workers have attended this location at least
0:01:44 > 0:01:47twice last week, the people here say they don't feel they have had
0:01:47 > 0:01:52support from the Mayor's office. They also said at the bears of is
0:01:52 > 0:01:57that there was an issue with workers trying to access those staying here
0:01:57 > 0:02:00but perhaps Westminster council can give us more information. We spoke
0:02:00 > 0:02:05to them and they said that this was a matter for the property owner.
0:02:05 > 0:02:10They also say they are aware of the situation and have been offering
0:02:10 > 0:02:15support to those with a genuine housing need. They say their teams
0:02:15 > 0:02:18are on stand-by to provide additional help if an eviction takes
0:02:18 > 0:02:23place but we have not seen any evidence of that. The bailiffs are
0:02:23 > 0:02:27not here, almost everybody has gone, most people you can see our
0:02:27 > 0:02:30volunteers. A couple of people are left but I expect through the
0:02:30 > 0:02:35afternoon they will be gone. What we don't know is where everybody is
0:02:35 > 0:02:39going. I have been speaking to people all Monica but most don't
0:02:39 > 0:02:42have a plan, some are hoping charities can help them, others say
0:02:42 > 0:02:45they expect to be out on the street again tonight.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Police are looking for a man who burgled an elderly
0:02:49 > 0:02:50woman as she lay in bed.
0:02:50 > 0:03:00The 90-year-old was in her home in Blackbrook Lane in Bromley
0:03:00 > 0:03:02when a man forced open the window, climbed
0:03:02 > 0:03:03inside and took her jewellery.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06Her family had installed CCTV in her home as she
0:03:06 > 0:03:07suffers from Alzheimer's.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Anyone who recognises the man is asked to contact the police.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11Residents in Croydon were evacuated from their homes overnight
0:03:11 > 0:03:15after a car drove into an energy plant and caused a gas leak.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17Police were called to Whitestone Way just before 8:30pm last night.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20Cordons were put in place and much of the disruption continued
0:03:20 > 0:03:25throughout this morning.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27The A23 has now reopened, but many residents are not
0:03:27 > 0:03:30being allowed to return home.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32Box trees are a common feature in the capital's gardens and they're
0:03:32 > 0:03:33regularly cut into shapes.
0:03:33 > 0:03:37Well, they're under threat from the box tree caterpillar.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40Now the RHS Wisley in Surrey says it is trying to find the best
0:03:40 > 0:03:41way to tackle the pest.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Here's our Environment Correspondent, Tom Edwards.
0:03:45 > 0:03:50The box tree caterpillar arrived from China around 2011 and,
0:03:50 > 0:03:53since then, it has been destroying the capital's box trees,
0:03:53 > 0:03:57leaving them looking like this.
0:03:57 > 0:03:58Last summer this was eaten completely by caterpillars
0:03:58 > 0:04:01of the box tree moth.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04And in particular it seems to be a problem in gardens
0:04:04 > 0:04:08in south-west London.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11They can completely strip the plant of leaves and they don't
0:04:11 > 0:04:12look very attractive.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15They cover them in webbing and insect frass, that's insect poo.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18It doesn't look or smell very nice at all.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21At the Royal Horticultural Society in Wisley in Surrey they are now
0:04:21 > 0:04:25breeding the caterpillars as they want to test
0:04:25 > 0:04:29the best way to tackle them.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31That will include when and how to apply insecticides or natural
0:04:32 > 0:04:36control methods such as nematodes.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40We'll probably start off quite simple and basic with how well do
0:04:40 > 0:04:43these nematode biological controls work on the box trees caterpillar,
0:04:43 > 0:04:47perhaps how well do some pesticides work on them,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50are there different ways we can apply them to make
0:04:50 > 0:04:53them more effective, and eventually we would piece
0:04:53 > 0:04:56together all of those separate research projects into the advice
0:04:56 > 0:04:57we can give to gardeners.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00The other alternative, though, for gardeners is to use
0:05:00 > 0:05:03other types of hedges that the caterpillars don't eat.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06What with the disease and the caterpillar,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09they do make a mess, they do eat the leaves and leave
0:05:09 > 0:05:12bare sticks behind so lots of people are beginning to make decisions
0:05:12 > 0:05:16to other plants, to grow other plants because they can
0:05:16 > 0:05:19actually do that job, they can have that low hedge
0:05:19 > 0:05:21outside their front door.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Experts, though, believe these pests will be difficult to get rid
0:05:24 > 0:05:25of and we will see changes to the capital's
0:05:26 > 0:05:28gardens permanently.
0:05:28 > 0:05:34Tom Edwards, BBC London News.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37Whenever there's a new film out, its stars hit the red carpet
0:05:37 > 0:05:39or give interviews in posh London hotel rooms.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42That's what John Boyega is doing at the moment for his new film.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45As part of the BBC's School Report, we sent two students
0:05:45 > 0:05:47from Prendergast Ladywell School in Lewisham to do the job.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50And Wendy Hurrell went along to help them out.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59Welcome to the weird world of the movie junket, into which we have
0:05:59 > 0:06:05brought our intrepid School reporters.I am Azra, I'm missing
0:06:05 > 0:06:11arts.I am Azra and I'm missing English. We are here to interview
0:06:11 > 0:06:17John Boyega about his new film.In which he plays Jake, fighting off
0:06:17 > 0:06:20sea monsters in Pacific Rim uprising.
0:06:23 > 0:06:28We are in a small room at a posh hotel filled with production staff
0:06:28 > 0:06:32and a startling array of light, sound and camera equipment.I'm
0:06:32 > 0:06:37really nervous!It's an intimidating situation even for a seasoned
0:06:37 > 0:06:41journalist so in a holding room a pep talk from me. They will be
0:06:41 > 0:06:46people hiding in the corner and you can ignore them. In they go, the
0:06:46 > 0:06:49movie stars have sat there all day answering pretty much the same
0:06:49 > 0:06:54questions over and over, it is not the done thing to go to off script
0:06:54 > 0:07:01but taking presents always goes down well.We heard it was your birthday.
0:07:01 > 0:07:06Yes! Other people keep on reminding me and I have totally forgotten!
0:07:06 > 0:07:13Thank you! Thank you so much. You are known as a Peckham Lloyd, is the
0:07:13 > 0:07:18way you were put a help or graduate down to help people build your
0:07:18 > 0:07:23acting dreams -- Peckham boys.I was very blessed, I had a good time at
0:07:23 > 0:07:28Theatre School and friends aiming for the same thing I was, and I was
0:07:28 > 0:07:31surrounded by a lot of motivation and I was still in Peckham when I
0:07:31 > 0:07:38got the biggest role of my life.We are Azra and Hari.School report,
0:07:38 > 0:07:40BBC London News.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42Now the weather with Sara Thornton.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49It has been dragging us down through the weekend! This shows how confused
0:07:49 > 0:07:58we all are, spring on one side, winter at the bottom and all of us
0:07:58 > 0:08:02have a bit of snow around and some ice was a concern, especially
0:08:02 > 0:08:07because we have the sunshine at the moment and we have that for the rest
0:08:07 > 0:08:11of the afternoon which means there is a bit of a thaw and then a
0:08:11 > 0:08:18refreeze and that can equal eyes. The clearing skies in the south, but
0:08:18 > 0:08:21pulling away nicely, the cloud. The temperatures have not been
0:08:21 > 0:08:27brilliant, still below par for the time of year, but not quite as raw
0:08:27 > 0:08:32at the weekend. When the sun sets we will have a refreeze after the day
0:08:32 > 0:08:37so watch out. The cloud comes in overnight, maybe a couple of showers
0:08:37 > 0:08:42and that will combine with the temperatures below freezing to give
0:08:42 > 0:08:45us a risk of ice first thing in the morning and there is a weather
0:08:45 > 0:08:50warning for the morning commute. Watch out for ice first thing and
0:08:50 > 0:08:53there will be some cloud around, maybe a stray shower but the
0:08:53 > 0:08:59emphasis tomorrow is feeling vastly different to the past few days, even
0:08:59 > 0:09:02with the cloud coming in at the end of the afternoon, the temperatures
0:09:02 > 0:09:07do look an awful lot better. Not quite where we should beat still but
0:09:07 > 0:09:147-9dC. This is the air mass, yellow is milder and that is pushing
0:09:14 > 0:09:18towards us for the middle of the week. Temperatures on the way up,
0:09:18 > 0:09:19spring starts tomorrow!
0:09:22 > 0:09:22Finally!
0:09:22 > 0:09:24That's about it from me.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26Louisa Preston will be here with our 6:30pm evening programme.
0:09:26 > 0:09:30But for now, from us all, a very good afternoon.
