0:00:00 > 0:00:11so it's goodbye from me - and on BBC One we now join the BBC's
0:00:11 > 0:00:16Welcome to BBC London News. I'm Tolu Adeoye.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18BBC London has learnt an increasing number
0:00:18 > 0:00:22of care homes are thought to be "cherry-picking" their residents.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25Some have blamed a lack of funding and more demand for places -
0:00:25 > 0:00:27leaving them unable to look after those with the
0:00:27 > 0:00:28highest care needs.
0:00:28 > 0:00:30The Government says it will publish plans this Summer
0:00:30 > 0:00:31to reform social care.
0:00:31 > 0:00:33Helen Mulroy reports.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Back to work for Alex Turner.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39It's been a long time coming for the graphic designer
0:00:39 > 0:00:42after he was forced to take a career break at just 26 when his
0:00:42 > 0:00:47mum Sue was diagnosed with early-onset dementia.
0:00:47 > 0:00:54I'd get five or six phone calls a day, members of the public
0:00:54 > 0:00:57would find her or the police would pick her up or she'd be
0:00:57 > 0:01:02in different hospitals around our area and I'd have to go
0:01:02 > 0:01:04and collect her a lot of the time.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06When she was living at home, there'd be different carers everyday.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09She wouldn't want to let them in.
0:01:09 > 0:01:14They haven't been trained as to how to do that.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17So, full-time jobs were impossible.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20Alex became his mum's main carer, even living with her for a period
0:01:20 > 0:01:23of time, but her condition worsened and she went into hospital.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26By then, it was clear that the only option was a care home.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29For the next year, Alex looked at over 20 homes,
0:01:29 > 0:01:35and applied for a place at more than ten of them.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38But, at each one, after assessing Sue, who was still relatively young,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40physically fit, and mobile, none could offer her place.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44It was a really depressing and demoralising and I felt really
0:01:44 > 0:01:47unsure about where she was going to be going.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51It wasn't a nice time.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Sadly, Alex and Sue's story is far from unique.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Our helpline increasingly gets calls of this nature.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01We find that care homes are picking and choosing people
0:02:01 > 0:02:04that they accepted into their homes, largely because they don't
0:02:04 > 0:02:06have the funding to be able to provide the specialist support
0:02:06 > 0:02:08needed to help people with dementia.
0:02:08 > 0:02:13With wages going up soon, the property and the upkeep of that
0:02:13 > 0:02:15property, particularly in London, that can be extremely expensive.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19In contacting the government, we asked the Department of Health
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and social care what they are doing about the lack of appropriate
0:02:22 > 0:02:25care home places.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28They told us that they have invested an extra £2 billion in social care
0:02:28 > 0:02:31and that over the summer they are publishing planned reforms
0:02:31 > 0:02:35to make the system more sustainable for the future.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38But for Sue and Alex, any such reform is too late.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41I've missed a chunk of my career.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44I just couldn't get a job.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48My mum wouldn't have been happy about that.
0:02:48 > 0:02:53It would have been incredibly upsetting for my mum to know
0:02:53 > 0:02:56what I've gone through.
0:02:56 > 0:03:01Helen Mulroy, BBC London News.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03The last few people who were squatting in a central
0:03:03 > 0:03:04London building have been evicted.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07Bailiffs and police arrived to find
0:03:07 > 0:03:09the building on Great Portland Street mostly empty.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13Around 150 people had occupied it since the start of March.
0:03:13 > 0:03:18The majority left on Monday after the owner won a court order.
0:03:18 > 0:03:22Dog owners are being urged to keep their pets on leads
0:03:22 > 0:03:24in the countryside, it's after two dogs killed 13 sheep
0:03:24 > 0:03:26in Hertfordshire.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Across the country around 15,000 sheep were killed
0:03:28 > 0:03:32after being attacked in 2016.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35Some argue more bans on dogs in parks around London could be
0:03:35 > 0:03:36making the situation worse.
0:03:36 > 0:03:45Sarah Harris reports.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47Three times in as many years, Tim's sheep kept in the countryside
0:03:47 > 0:03:49close to Watford have been attacked by dogs.
0:03:49 > 0:03:54The scale of such incidents is huge.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57POlice were called to a nearby farm this week where to dogs took out
0:03:57 > 0:04:03almost the entire flock.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Though was a total of 13 sheep, being a mixture of fully grown ewes
0:04:06 > 0:04:09and newly born lambs that have been slaughtered and there are a further
0:04:09 > 0:04:13six lambs that the farmer was able to take back to the farm that had
0:04:13 > 0:04:15been injured, some of them quite severely.
0:04:15 > 0:04:22Legal proceedings are ongoing against the owner and the pictures
0:04:22 > 0:04:25are too harrowing to broadcast but the research shows there
0:04:25 > 0:04:27are thousands of attacks in the countryside around
0:04:27 > 0:04:30London every year.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33Tim doesn't just keep sheep, he also advises the government
0:04:33 > 0:04:35and the police on how to deal with the problem of
0:04:35 > 0:04:37livestock worrying.
0:04:37 > 0:04:42He said it often boils down to the owner's naivete.
0:04:42 > 0:04:49People walking a dog and it's not under control,
0:04:49 > 0:04:52on a lead, and they see sheep, the dogs see sheep,
0:04:52 > 0:04:55the dogs run off and attack and the owner can't recall it.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57Because the dog is going back into primitive hunting mode.
0:04:57 > 0:04:58And this is all dogs.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00This isn't particular types of dogs.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04This is large, small, all breeds.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07And it simply, in this case, the owners just do not understand
0:05:07 > 0:05:14that their dog will go back to its hunting instincts.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16Very seldom is it the fault of the dog.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19With Easter coming, the police are keen to get the message
0:05:19 > 0:05:21across for owners to keep their dogs on a lead in the countryside.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24If things do get out of hand, they may face criminal charges.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28Sarah Harris, BBC London News.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31A boxer from Gravesend has been selected to represent England
0:05:31 > 0:05:34at the Commonwealth Games.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37Chev Clarke learned to box in his home town -
0:05:37 > 0:05:39he now spends the week training with the national
0:05:39 > 0:05:40squad in Sheffield.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42But most weekends, he's back in Gravesend.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44And that's where Ian Palmer caught up with him.
0:05:44 > 0:05:49He's won the heavyweight amateur boxing title twice now,
0:05:49 > 0:05:54Chev Clarke is aiming to become the Commonwealth champion as well.
0:05:54 > 0:05:54I feel very good.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57Very confident.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00I'm looking forward to it.
0:06:00 > 0:06:06Looking forward to performing, going doing business.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Chev Clarke was born in Jamaica, he moved
0:06:08 > 0:06:09to Gravesend when he was 14.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13A talented footballer, he didn't take up boxing until he was 18.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Chev's best friend Sanjay, who he met at the beginning
0:06:16 > 0:06:19of his boxing career ten years ago, explains why his body is so good.
0:06:19 > 0:06:23His mental strength, more than anything.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26I know he's in great physical shape and people always
0:06:26 > 0:06:28look at him and think, you've got these muscles,
0:06:28 > 0:06:32or whatever, but mentally there's not many people like him.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34He has got this resilience to everything and he can
0:06:34 > 0:06:38bounce back from anything.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41That's mainly the reason why he's so successful.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44He represented Jamaica in the Commonwealth
0:06:44 > 0:06:46games four years ago.
0:06:46 > 0:06:50In Glasgow, he roomed next door but one to the sprinter Usain Bolt.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53The 27-year-old says representing England in Australia is an honour
0:06:53 > 0:06:57and he's ready for the challenge.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01I'm very confident myself and my team.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03Unbelievable amount of talent up there.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05I take that back, unbelievable amount of hard work back there.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08So, expect a whole lot of trophies.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10This going to be great.
0:07:10 > 0:07:17Yes.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19His first bout in Brisbane takes place on April 6th.
0:07:19 > 0:07:20Ian Palmer reporting there.
0:07:20 > 0:07:21That takes us to the weather.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23Kate Kinsella is here with me now.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26How's it looking?
0:07:26 > 0:07:34Not too bad. Pretty good today. A cold and frosty start today. Maybe a
0:07:34 > 0:07:41little below in one or two places. But we had blue sky and sunshine,
0:07:41 > 0:07:48really quite pleasant. Yes, a bit chilly but the sunshine makes
0:07:48 > 0:07:53everyone feel a little better. Further sunny spells. There may be a
0:07:53 > 0:07:56little bit in the way of patchy cloud as we had through but
0:07:56 > 0:08:00hopefully we will see sunny spells.
0:08:05 > 0:08:11Temperatures rising quite steadily. Up to about 10 Celsius. Not
0:08:11 > 0:08:16especially warm but feeling nice in the sunshine. This evening, the high
0:08:16 > 0:08:23cloud thickens and increases coming down from the North. It's not going
0:08:23 > 0:08:27to get quite as cold as it did last night. It will also bring some
0:08:27 > 0:08:32outbreaks of rain. A damp start tomorrow. The minimum temperature
0:08:32 > 0:08:40above zero. A reasonably mild start tomorrow, if a little damp at first.
0:08:40 > 0:08:47Gradually, that. The clear. Temperatures are little bit milder
0:08:47 > 0:08:52through Thursday. Looking up at a maximum getting up to around 12
0:08:52 > 0:08:56Celsius. Towards the end of the week, various weather fronts coming
0:08:56 > 0:09:08in from the E -- the Atlantic. Some showers, a bit of a breeze.
0:09:08 > 0:09:13Temperatures cooling off a little bit into the weekend and next week.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16Then temperatures start to rise again.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18Thanks, Kate.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20That's it from me - Asad Ahmad will be here
0:09:20 > 0:09:22with our 6.30 programme.
0:09:22 > 0:09:27But for now, from us all, have a very good afternoon.
