:00:00. > :00:16.Good afternoon and welcome to BBC London News with me, Jim Wheble.

:00:17. > :00:18.The mayor is calling on the government to spend more

:00:19. > :00:21.than half a billion pounds on compensating people prepared

:00:22. > :00:27.Sadiq Khan says his proposals for a diesel scrappage scheme would

:00:28. > :00:31.Others say there needs to be suitable

:00:32. > :00:37.Our Environment editor Tim Donovan reports.

:00:38. > :00:39.Much air pollution might be invisible, but it's killing 10,000

:00:40. > :00:42.people prematurely each year in London.

:00:43. > :00:45.Diesel vehicles should be scrapped, says the mayor, and the

:00:46. > :00:47.Government should compensate their owners.

:00:48. > :00:55.Unless they step in and take action against polluting diesel vehicles,

:00:56. > :00:59.I'm afraid they will be held to be in breach again of the law.

:01:00. > :01:02.not just because of the law but because

:01:03. > :01:04.they can help address the

:01:05. > :01:08.poor quality air in London, to step in and have a national diesel

:01:09. > :01:11.Now the mayor wants three and a half thousand

:01:12. > :01:14.pounds offered for each van or minibus

:01:15. > :01:15.and ?2000 in credit for the

:01:16. > :01:28.What I would like to see is allowing people to move not just from a

:01:29. > :01:30.diesel car, but hopefully to electric cars and

:01:31. > :01:32.things like that because you have to have...

:01:33. > :01:35.If you're going to get rid of one car you have to have

:01:36. > :01:36.an environmentally friendly alternative.

:01:37. > :01:42.There are some who point to Paris for lessons with the

:01:43. > :01:48.Champs-Elysees closed to traffic once a month and sections of the

:01:49. > :01:50.right and left banks of the river are now

:01:51. > :01:51.permanently giving over to

:01:52. > :01:54.Using a system of stickers on high polluting days,

:01:55. > :02:00.some vehicles are not allowed on the road.

:02:01. > :02:03.And in 2020, the Mayor says all diesel cars will be banned from

:02:04. > :02:07.In London they are saying it is not quite what it is

:02:08. > :02:10.If we pursue the programme we are going through, by

:02:11. > :02:13.2020 we will have reduced the air pollution in London by at least

:02:14. > :02:16.half, and that is the date at which they are talking about doing a

:02:17. > :02:19.diesel ban in quite a small area of Paris.

:02:20. > :02:22.So, you know, the programme we have got is a very practical one

:02:23. > :02:26.From this October in London drivers of the

:02:27. > :02:29.most polluting vehicles will have to pay a daily toxicity charge

:02:30. > :02:39.Sutton United fans queued up from the early hours of the morning

:02:40. > :02:41.today to get tickets for one the biggest games in

:02:42. > :02:47.In just over a week they play Arsenal in the fifth

:02:48. > :02:49.round of the FA Cup at Sutton's Borough Sports Ground

:02:50. > :02:55.and as I've been finding out, hopes are high.

:02:56. > :03:03.It was all about this today in Sutton. The golden ticket. It meant

:03:04. > :03:08.an early start, time to contemplate the big game. Got the tickets.

:03:09. > :03:13.Pretty cold. We are going to have a bacon roll, cup of tea and the rest

:03:14. > :03:22.of the day to talk about the big match coming up. I do hope Arsenal

:03:23. > :03:27.bring out their 14, if they do, I'm not that sure if they do bring out

:03:28. > :03:31.the full team, but Sutton do have a chance. I had heard a rumour at this

:03:32. > :03:39.flicker of confidence was in part due to Sutton's secret weapon. Who

:03:40. > :03:45.is this? Here's our reserve goalkeeper, the roly-poly goalie. Is

:03:46. > :03:51.he good? He is agile for a big man. And a saucy chap. I have been told

:03:52. > :03:56.that the roly-poly goalie is around here somewhere. I have got a feeling

:03:57. > :04:01.we will have to catch up with him. The queue for tickets was getting

:04:02. > :04:10.longer and longer and longer. You are at the end of the queue. Am I? I

:04:11. > :04:14.am amazed. And it was their school in the fourth round against Leeds

:04:15. > :04:18.United which has made the game against Premier League giants

:04:19. > :04:24.Arsenal a possibility. They call it the magic of the FA Cup. So could

:04:25. > :04:28.suddenly I did win? Realistically I think you are the one getting

:04:29. > :04:33.carried away, I have my feet on the ground, we are just delighted to be

:04:34. > :04:36.in the fifth round. I don't think a non-league club have ever reached

:04:37. > :04:45.the cup final and I think it's extremely unlikely but you can

:04:46. > :04:51.dream. We have found Wayne, here he is. How are you? Superb, yourself?

:04:52. > :04:55.We have seen you on the sauce bottles and will you step in on the

:04:56. > :04:59.big day? It would be good but we will be leaving the heat on Arsenal

:05:00. > :05:02.with the chilli sauce. Quite a morning let's put it that way.

:05:03. > :05:04.Lets have a look at the weather for the week ahead

:05:05. > :05:13.A little more cold weather until we get milder temperatures in the week

:05:14. > :05:18.ahead but the wind has been the main issue and it will continue through

:05:19. > :05:22.the night. Dry tonight and tomorrow, fair amount of sunshine on offer for

:05:23. > :05:26.many of us, the further north the more chance of a cloudy day and

:05:27. > :05:30.temperatures may suffer a little but elsewhere in the sunshine getting up

:05:31. > :05:35.to eight or nine Celsius but not feeling that way because of the

:05:36. > :05:38.chilli easterly wind. But as we head to the week and the wind starts to

:05:39. > :05:41.drop temperatures rise to double figures and it will feel very

:05:42. > :05:43.different indeed to the past couple of days by the end of the week.

:05:44. > :05:47.That's it from me for now, but do join us for the bulletin this

:05:48. > :05:48.evening at the later time of 11:20pm.

:05:49. > :06:14.Good evening, dull, grey, cold, miserable. And that's just me! The

:06:15. > :06:18.weather hasn't been great leader for most of us, it will be chilly out

:06:19. > :06:23.there with this nagging easterly breeze, wetter weather for Northern

:06:24. > :06:26.Ireland, by the end of the night most of the dampness across parts of

:06:27. > :06:31.Eastern Scotland and North East England, most of the high ground

:06:32. > :06:33.Luus will have faded away as well. But not warm, another chilly
