:00:21. > :00:25.counter-terrorism exercise on the River Thames.
:00:26. > :00:28.Emergency services were tested on their ability to tackle a lethal
:00:29. > :00:31.attack on the water - in which dozens of people
:00:32. > :00:38.Our home affairs correspondent Nick Beake was watching.
:00:39. > :00:42.A chilling sight on the River Thames.
:00:43. > :00:44.Terrorists have hijacked a tourist boat and taken dozens of
:00:45. > :00:48.But someone manages to raise the alarm and help
:00:49. > :01:00.More than a dozen armed officers hurtle along the river to
:01:01. > :01:04.It's a race to reach the hijackers who are heading
:01:05. > :01:11.for the City of London to launch an attack.
:01:12. > :01:18.the elite marksmen catch up and open fire.
:01:19. > :01:20.One terrorist is down, now they must take out the others.
:01:21. > :01:23.So they board the boat, neutralise the
:01:24. > :01:28.threat and secure the terrified hostages on board.
:01:29. > :01:31.This is the first major exercise the Met and its
:01:32. > :01:36.partners have carried out on the Thames.
:01:37. > :01:39.London is prepared, we train and work and firearms officers are
:01:40. > :01:43.trained to the highest levels to go forward
:01:44. > :01:46.and confront this kind of threat.
:01:47. > :01:48.You know, there is no intelligence that this is going to
:01:49. > :01:53.take place but we want to make sure we are prepared, we are ready for it
:01:54. > :01:56.and we can keep Londoners safe if that's what's required.
:01:57. > :01:57.Scotland Yard says there is no intelligence
:01:58. > :02:00.to suggest anyone is planning this sort of specific attack for real.
:02:01. > :02:03.But last year an independent report commissioned by the Mayor of London
:02:04. > :02:05.said security on the River Thames should be improved.
:02:06. > :02:08.By inviting the cameras to watch this exercise this
:02:09. > :02:10.morning the police are trying to achieve two things.
:02:11. > :02:12.First, show they're prepared for a terrorist
:02:13. > :02:15.attack, and second, remind the public that the threat level
:02:16. > :02:17.remains severe meaning an attack is highly likely.
:02:18. > :02:20.The 200 police officers and other staff involved in this
:02:21. > :02:23.exercise will have seen the shooting of a terror suspect at a Paris
:02:24. > :02:31.Yet another reminder of why the Met and others

:02:35. > :02:41.A man has been charged on suspicion of causing criminal damage
:02:42. > :02:43.to a valuable painting at the National Gallery.
:02:44. > :02:46.The gallery has confirmed that the painting in question
:02:47. > :02:51.is 'The Morning Walk' by Thomas Gainsborough.
:02:52. > :02:55.Keith Gregory who's 63 and of no fixed abode was charged today.
:02:56. > :02:58.Now this might come as a surprise but London is one of the least
:02:59. > :03:02.densely populated metropolises in the world.
:03:03. > :03:12.But the desperate need for more housing may soon change that.

:03:26. > :03:29.In six out of the last seven years the homes built in the

:03:39. > :03:41.Harrow even, you begin to see not things quite as dense as this but
:03:42. > :03:47.things that are beginning to look more like this.
:03:48. > :03:50.The downside is that you do end up, and certainly have here,
:03:51. > :03:52.with sometimes, if it's not really beautifully designed, quite gloomy
:03:53. > :03:54.properties that overlook each other and it feels crowded.
:03:55. > :03:57.And for many people, obviously not the people who
:03:58. > :03:59.live here, but for many people this area would probably
:04:00. > :04:03.Certainly compared with much of the rest of London,
:04:04. > :04:16.Small is beautiful believes the developer behind hundreds of
:04:17. > :04:22.flats like this one which are 400 square
:04:23. > :04:24.feet and on sale for an average ?250,000.
:04:25. > :04:28.That is not the view of people in their 20s,
:04:29. > :04:31.their 30s, 40s, who are absolutely critical to the London
:04:32. > :04:33.economy and they want a different kind of housing.
:04:34. > :04:35.They have fewer possessions, they want to get
:04:36. > :04:38.into the centre of town faster, they want to have buildings that
:04:39. > :04:41.So I think actually the garden may be for a
:04:42. > :04:45.for pressure on London to be relieved.
:04:46. > :04:47.GLA Conservatives, we've been arguing for a long time
:04:48. > :04:49.that the Government needs to ramp up the idea
:04:50. > :04:55.south-east to solve the problems of the south-east.
:04:56. > :04:57.It's not just London's housing problems.
:04:58. > :04:59.If you go to other parts of the south-east
:05:00. > :05:00.outside London they've equally got problems.
:05:01. > :05:03.We have to start building again and we have to start giving
:05:04. > :05:05.the opportunities for people to develop.
:05:06. > :05:08.But there seems no signs soon of space becoming a prime
