:00:14. > :00:15.Good evening and welcome to BBC London News.
:00:16. > :00:21.The Liberal Democrats say they are the only main party
:00:22. > :00:25.in the capital who will fight plans to build a third runway
:00:26. > :00:29.Both Labour and the Conservatives are backing expansion.
:00:30. > :00:32.But how important is the issue to voters - and will it be
:00:33. > :00:38.Our transport correspondent, Tom Edwards, reports.
:00:39. > :00:41.They are coming back and they're taking the villages the way
:00:42. > :00:46.At this recent meeting it was very clear that
:00:47. > :00:52.Heathrow expansion splits opinion, communities and political parties,
:00:53. > :00:59.The main issue in these elections in my opinion will be Brexit,
:01:00. > :01:04.but it wouldn't be too far off from Brexit.
:01:05. > :01:10.It's just going to be one issue that I'm thinking about,
:01:11. > :01:15.But it's an important one for this area in particular.
:01:16. > :01:18.It would be a case of if people are still trying to push
:01:19. > :01:21.through a runway I wouldn't be keen to vote for that party,
:01:22. > :01:26.Many businesses want a third runway for jobs.
:01:27. > :01:29.It's also being used to show that the UK is open
:01:30. > :01:34.The Conservatives say they'll push ahead with expansion of Heathrow.
:01:35. > :01:41.But some senior members in both parties oppose another runway.
:01:42. > :01:45.The third runway I think would do all sorts of damage
:01:46. > :01:51.in terms of noise pollution, which we can hear now,
:01:52. > :01:54.and above all of air pollution, and I don't think it's been
:01:55. > :01:58.I don't think any government will withstand public
:01:59. > :02:00.opinion on this matter, because whatever happens
:02:01. > :02:02.in the general election, the real issue is going to be debated.
:02:03. > :02:05.Members were reminded of the county's long
:02:06. > :02:08.tradition of resistance to interference and oppression.
:02:09. > :02:11.Aviation expansion has perplexed politicians for decades.
:02:12. > :02:14.Recommendations and commissions have come and gone, but no
:02:15. > :02:19.new full-length runway has been laid in the south-east since the 1940s.
:02:20. > :02:23.Expansion is opposed by the Greens and today,

:02:26. > :02:31.The residents - and there are very many millions of them who live under
:02:32. > :02:34.the flight path who are going to be affected by a third runway -
:02:35. > :02:36.will not want, in my view, politicians to simply
:02:37. > :02:39.throw their hands up in the air and say, it's too difficult,
:02:40. > :02:41.it's agreed, so let's forget about it.
:02:42. > :02:45.We'll continue to campaign against it.
:02:46. > :02:49.Experts fear Heathrow expansion is being overshadowed.
:02:50. > :02:51.Around the airport almost all candidates and councils
:02:52. > :02:56.are against extending Heathrow, but for the rest of the country,
:02:57. > :03:00.and perhaps particularly for the government, it's seen
:03:01. > :03:03.as an issue of sending a signal about the future of the country,
:03:04. > :03:06.and I think whoever wins the election, certainly if it's
:03:07. > :03:08.Conservatives or Labour, they'll want to send out that signal

:03:37. > :03:39.positions have moved now, so the two main political parties seem to
:03:40. > :03:44.accent that expansion is needed for the good of the economy. But I don't
:03:45. > :03:48.think that is the end of the matter. What is going to be happening, or
:03:49. > :03:51.could happen, is we move into another phase. I've been speaking to
:03:52. > :03:55.some anti-expansion campaigners today. They say they will fight on.
:03:56. > :04:00.They say politics can change quickly. What they really want, what
:04:01. > :04:05.they are looking at to get is tough legally binding conditions attached
:04:06. > :04:08.to the project, particularly around pollution, noise and night flights.
:04:09. > :04:13.So if it is built on residents get the best possible deal. So this is a
