:00:16. > :00:30.Many of us saw heavy downpours on Saturday. Sunday has been warmer and

:00:31. > :00:31.drier. Things will be feeling warm and looking dry with high pressure

:00:32. > :00:37.in charge. Good evening and welcome to BBC

:00:38. > :00:39.London News, I'm Sonja Jessup. The Liberal Democrats say

:00:40. > :00:42.they are the only major party in the capital who will fight plans

:00:43. > :00:45.to build a third runway Both Labour and the Conservatives

:00:46. > :00:48.are backing expansion. But how important is the issue

:00:49. > :00:51.to voters - and will it be Our Transport Correspondent,

:00:52. > :00:53.Tom Edwards, reports. They are coming back

:00:54. > :00:55.and they are taking the villages the way they wanted

:00:56. > :00:58.to the first time round... At this recent meeting

:00:59. > :01:00.it was very clear that Heathrow expansion split opinion,

:01:01. > :01:03.communities, and political parties. The main issue in these elections,

:01:04. > :01:07.in my opinion, will be Brexit. But it wouldn't be too

:01:08. > :01:09.far off from Brexit. It's just going to be one issue

:01:10. > :01:12.that I'm thinking about, not the main one, I guess,

:01:13. > :01:15.but it is an important one Well it would be a case

:01:16. > :01:19.of if people were trying I wouldn't be keen to vote for that

:01:20. > :01:24.party or that candidate. Many businesses want

:01:25. > :01:26.a third runway for jobs. It's also been used to show

:01:27. > :01:29.that the UK is open The Conservatives say they will push

:01:30. > :01:32.ahead with expansion of Heathrow. Some senior members in both parties

:01:33. > :01:40.oppose another runway. A third runway, I think,

:01:41. > :01:43.would do all sorts of damage in terms of noise pollution,

:01:44. > :01:45.which we can hear now, and above all, of air

:01:46. > :01:47.pollution, as well. -- I don't think it has been

:01:48. > :01:58.properly thought through. I don't think any government

:01:59. > :02:01.is going to be able to withstand public opinion on this matter

:02:02. > :02:03.because whatever happens in the general election the real

:02:04. > :02:06.issue is going to be debated. Aviation expansion has perplexed

:02:07. > :02:08.politicians for decades. Recommendations and commissions have

:02:09. > :02:10.come and gone, but no new full-length runway has been laid

:02:11. > :02:14.in the south-east since the 1940s. And today the Liberal Democrats

:02:15. > :02:26.reaffirmed their continue -- And today the Liberal Democrats

:02:27. > :02:28.reaffirmed they'll continue The residents, and there are very

:02:29. > :02:36.many millions of them who live under the flight path,

:02:37. > :02:42.who are going to be affected by a third runway, will not

:02:43. > :02:46.want to, in my view, politicians to simply

:02:47. > :02:48.throw their hands up in the air and say, oh,

:02:49. > :02:50.it's too difficult, it agreed. We will continue to

:02:51. > :02:53.campaign against it. Experts say Heathrow expansion

:02:54. > :02:55.is being overshadowed. It is seen as an issue

:02:56. > :02:57.of sending a signal I think whoever wins the election,

:02:58. > :03:01.certainly if it is Conservatives or Labour, they will want to send

:03:02. > :03:05.out that signal of Britain Heathrow Airport says

:03:06. > :03:07.expansion will lose trade. Some local council say the

:03:08. > :03:09.environmental costs are too high. Whatever happens on election day

:03:10. > :03:12.those arguments will not stop. -- Heathrow Airport says

:03:13. > :03:14.expansion will boost trade. And Tom joins me now -

:03:15. > :03:20.so where does this leave the whole It feels like we have come full

:03:21. > :03:23.circle with the Conservatives and Labour. They both know what to

:03:24. > :03:28.expand Heathrow. But I don't think it's the end of the debate. It could

:03:29. > :03:33.just be moving into another phase. I've spoken to some anti-expansion

:03:34. > :03:37.campaigners today. They want to fight on. They say politics can

:03:38. > :03:42.change quickly. Interestingly they now want tough legally binding

:03:43. > :03:45.conditions attached to the project, particularly around noise, night

:03:46. > :03:51.flights, pollution, and air quality is a key issue now. Residents will

:03:52. > :03:55.get the best possible deal. This is a long way from being over. Plenty

:03:56. > :03:57.of political battles ahead. Thank you.

:03:58. > :03:59.The brother of an engineer from Surrey - who was shot

:04:00. > :04:02.dead in the French Alps - has called for a High Court

:04:03. > :04:07.his wife, and her mother, were discovered on a remote

:04:08. > :04:10.His brother, Zaid al-Hilli, said a High Court judge

:04:11. > :04:17.because the French investigation had failed to uncover the truth.

:04:18. > :04:19.Well I hope you've enjoyed the sunshine today -

:04:20. > :04:25.Here's Wendy Hurrell with the forecast.

:04:26. > :04:31.Your commute to work will look something like this.

:04:32. > :04:34.Blue skies overhead, temperatures in the mid teens.

:04:35. > :04:36.Come the afternoon and your evening commute, well, London

:04:37. > :04:39.could have got up to 23, 24, maybe 25 degrees in temperature

:04:40. > :04:44.Just look at the week, it's going to be quite

:04:45. > :04:48.That's all from us - Asad Ahmad will be here tomorrow

:04:49. > :04:51.morning with regular updates during our BBC Breakfast programme

:04:52. > :04:53.here on BBC One with all the latest from our London newsroom.

:04:57. > :04:57.at the usual address bbc.co.uk/london or

:04:58. > :05:17.It was a weekend of two halves. Heavy downpours on Saturday,
