0:00:10 > 0:00:12Good evening.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14I'm Alice Bhandhukravi.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17A special mass has been held at Southwark Cathedral to honour

0:00:17 > 0:00:23the victims of the terror attacks in Barcelona and at the seaside

0:00:23 > 0:00:24resort of Cambrils.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26In his sermon, the Dean of Southwark, the Very

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Reverend Andrew Nunn, addressed the differences

0:00:28 > 0:00:29and apparent similarities between the terror attacks

0:00:29 > 0:00:32which happened on his doorstep in Borough and in Barcelona.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Marc Ashdown reports.

0:00:35 > 0:00:41A hymn to remember those caught up in the Barcelona attack.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43The Dean himself was on holiday there a week ago.

0:00:43 > 0:00:48Addressing the congregation, he spoke of the prejudices

0:00:48 > 0:00:51which drive division and how a spirit of unity can overcome evil.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53The wounds that are there, that have been created within communities,

0:00:53 > 0:00:57will take a long time to heal.

0:00:57 > 0:01:02Because I think people lose confidence in the values that we

0:01:02 > 0:01:06have had and we mustn't do that.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09People feel, can I go to this place or that place?

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Of course we should.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14And the way that terrorism will win is for us to give into it.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Listening today was Amir, himself caught up in

0:01:17 > 0:01:18the London Bridge attack in June.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21His message to the people of Barcelona - now, more than ever,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23is the time for community cohesion.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26In the aftermath of attacks, there is always this backlash

0:01:26 > 0:01:32of people feeling upset and annoyed about what has happened.

0:01:32 > 0:01:37But if that sense of strong community is there and is promoted,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40then anything we can overcome.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43We can always overcome the negative.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48Today's message of hope struck a chord with the congregation.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50I found it very moving, actually.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54It made me think back to June and it made me think back to the experience

0:01:54 > 0:01:57we had on our doorstep.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00And made us feel very close and connected

0:02:00 > 0:02:01to the people of Barcelona.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03The service closed with a commemoration

0:02:03 > 0:02:05of the Marchioness disaster, the pleasure boat which sank 28

0:02:05 > 0:02:06years ago today on the Thames.

0:02:06 > 0:02:0951 people were killed.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12The Dean explaining that, like the victims of recent terror

0:02:12 > 0:02:14attacks, those who perished were from varied and different

0:02:14 > 0:02:18backgrounds and were simply out having fun.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Marc Ashdown, BBC London News.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24A train at Paddington partially derailed this morning

0:02:24 > 0:02:25as it was leaving the station.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30No one was injured on the 11.57 service to Penzance,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32although two platforms remain shut while the incident

0:02:32 > 0:02:35is being investigated.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38It's the third rail accident in a week following a similar

0:02:38 > 0:02:40derailment at Waterloo and another train hitting the buffers

0:02:40 > 0:02:44at King's Cross.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48One of the busiest railways in and out of London has a new owner.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50South West Trains ran its last service at midnight and has been

0:02:50 > 0:02:53replaced by South Western Railway, who've promised to replace

0:02:53 > 0:02:59or refurbish their trains over the next three years.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02But as Alice Salfield reports, unions have already planned

0:03:02 > 0:03:05a protest for tomorrow.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10After 21 years, South West Trains is no more.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15In comes a new company operating the franchise.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17A rather quiet start this morning, with a mixed

0:03:18 > 0:03:20reception from passengers.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22For me, I haven't had any problems with them.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I tend to commute before the rush-hour so at that time

0:03:25 > 0:03:29of the morning it has not been a problem.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Have you noticed any difference today?

0:03:30 > 0:03:31Not at all.

0:03:31 > 0:03:32No.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34They're still late coming in!

0:03:34 > 0:03:37But it is not the ideal time for South Western Railway

0:03:37 > 0:03:38to be taking over.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41Works to increase capacity at Waterloo mean 14 of the platforms

0:03:41 > 0:03:46will be closed during the first week of the new service.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49And customers are already being advised to make

0:03:49 > 0:03:52alternative arrangements.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56We have got just over a week of those works still to do but we're

0:03:56 > 0:03:58really looking forward, beyond those works, to kicking off

0:03:58 > 0:04:02and delivering the ?1.2 billion of investment that we have committed

0:04:02 > 0:04:04over our seven-year franchise.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06There's a promise of faster journeys from Reading and 90

0:04:06 > 0:04:10new trains to be introduced.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13But they are designed for the driver to operate the doors and the RMT

0:04:13 > 0:04:16union says the company is refusing to guarantee a second

0:04:16 > 0:04:19member of staff on board.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22South Western Railway says it does plan to but wants to discuss

0:04:22 > 0:04:26the role of guards with its staff.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29It has led to the RMT planning a protest outside

0:04:29 > 0:04:32the station tomorrow morning.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And although most trains haven't been rebranded

0:04:35 > 0:04:37with the new name yet, they have managed to

0:04:37 > 0:04:41change the water bottles.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46A quick look at tomorrow's weather now and it'll stay dry and rather

0:04:46 > 0:04:48cloudy with occasional warm sunny spells in the afternoon.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Highs of 21 Celsius.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52That's it.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54We're back tomorrow morning in Breakfast.

0:04:54 > 0:04:54From everyone here, goodnight.
