0:00:00 > 0:00:00There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel,

0:00:02 > 0:00:04for the news where you are.

0:00:04 > 0:00:11Goodbye.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Nearly 90 years after an extension to the Bakerloo Tube Line

0:00:28 > 0:00:30was first talked about, local people and businesses

0:00:30 > 0:00:32on the Old Kent Road - are angry that they're

0:00:32 > 0:00:34still being left out of current plans.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Several new stations are to be built, but there's

0:00:36 > 0:00:38NOT one serving THEM - and it's drawn criticism

0:00:38 > 0:00:40of a north-south divide of how London is served.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41Here's Sarah Harris.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44It's for this generation campaigners gathered today and want to see more

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Tube stations south of the river.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48They say this part of the capital should not be overlooked

0:00:48 > 0:00:50when the Bakerloo line is extended.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52South London is a poor relation when it comes

0:00:52 > 0:00:54to Tube stations in London.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Over 250 in the north and only 29 in the south.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59And virtually none in the south-east.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02So it is really important that as the Bakerloo line gets extended,

0:01:02 > 0:01:06we have more stations to serve local communities.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08London's Tube trains are second to none.

0:01:08 > 0:01:09But London transport engineers are always

0:01:09 > 0:01:12on the lookout for improvements...

0:01:12 > 0:01:14The Bakerloo line is over 100 years old and extending it further

0:01:14 > 0:01:20was first mentioned back in 1931.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23The plans now for at least four new stations between Elephant

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and Castle and Lewisham and the bricklayers roundabout

0:01:26 > 0:01:30is earmarked for a £70 million ventilation shaft.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Restaurant owner Suhail Ahmed says the opportunity should not be

0:01:32 > 0:01:36missed to breathe new life into a dying area.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39We feel we have been neglected.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44Our area has become a no man's land.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46There's all these other stations surrounding us.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Starting from Elephant and Castle and Borough.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49And London Bridge and Bermondsey.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51And we are kind of in like a blind spot.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54So when we asked people to come here we have to give them

0:01:54 > 0:01:56a million and one directions.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58TfL said in a statement that they had rejected the idea

0:01:58 > 0:02:01of putting a Tube station here because of the lack

0:02:01 > 0:02:03of construction land but they said because of public demand

0:02:03 > 0:02:10they were now to reconsider the decision.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12A 29-year-old man has appeared in court accused

0:02:12 > 0:02:15of attempting to murder a man - by pushing him into the path

0:02:15 > 0:02:19of a tube train on the westbound District Line.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21A man in his 50s was seriously injured at Bayswater Underground

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Station on Thursday.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26The driver managed to apply the brakes, but the commuter fell

0:02:26 > 0:02:28completely under the train.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33Alan Alencar didn't enter a plea.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Tonight, businesses in Hackney which sell alcohol can

0:02:35 > 0:02:38expect to be busy - because of course - it's Saturday.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41But as of a few days ago - they've had to start paying an extra

0:02:41 > 0:02:44levy to the council.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47It's been imposed to help monitor - and deal with anti-social behaviour

0:02:47 > 0:02:49- but not everyone's happy about it, as Paul Murphy-Kasp

0:02:49 > 0:02:54has been finding out.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57William runs one of the many businesses in Hackney that sell

0:02:57 > 0:03:03alcohol late into the night.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Earlier this week the council introduced a late night levy meaning

0:03:05 > 0:03:08they will pay more on top of their drinks licence.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The levy, I don't think is the worst thing in the world.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12I mean, I think everyone should contribute.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15There is a potential that these changes with the local authority

0:03:15 > 0:03:17legislation will eventually drive small, smaller, you know,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19smaller yet prosperous businesses like ours out of the borough.

0:03:19 > 0:03:25And potentially others as well.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27William's story is not uncommon, other establishments have also

0:03:27 > 0:03:30raised concerns but Hackney Council said they have not taken

0:03:30 > 0:03:34the decision lightly.

0:03:34 > 0:03:35The levy is to actually bring more customers

0:03:36 > 0:03:37to businesses in our borough.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40If we get this right and there's no reason why we shouldn't,

0:03:40 > 0:03:42businesses and the council working in partnership can actually make

0:03:42 > 0:03:48a great place even better.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Around 400 bars, pubs and restaurants are now paying

0:03:51 > 0:03:57anything from £300 to £4500 a year on top of their normal licence.

0:03:57 > 0:04:05But Hackney is not the only London Borough to bring in the tax.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Since its introduction in Islington incidents of both violent

0:04:07 > 0:04:08and alcohol-related crime have come down.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11But even with encouraging results, others said that the late-night levy

0:04:11 > 0:04:13is not the way forward.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16We prefer to promote those schemes that have residents associations

0:04:16 > 0:04:26and businesses and local councils and all local stakeholders alongside

0:04:27 > 0:04:29each other as opposed to a late-night levy

0:04:29 > 0:04:30which simply takes money away.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34While a House of Lords committee recommended the levy be abolished,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Hackney won't be the last London birth to bring it in.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39It comes to Tower Hamlets on New Year's Day.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44A look at the weather.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46And after a dry night tonight, tomorrow will start

0:04:46 > 0:04:48bright for many of us.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50There will be the odd passing shower around until the afternoon.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51Feeling cool at 11 Celsius.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52That's it for now.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55There's more on our Facebook page and our website.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56And I'll be back tomorrow.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Have a very good Saturday night.
