0:00:00 > 0:00:00between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Shaun Murphy. There is more throughout

0:00:00 > 0:00:02evening on the BBC News channel and I will be back with the late news at

0:00:02 > 0:00:05ten p:m.. Now it is time for the news where you are.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17As you've been hearing, overnight snow has caused widespread

0:00:17 > 0:00:22travel disruption particularly at our airports and on the roads.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24The extent of it, which covered most of London

0:00:24 > 0:00:27and the Home Counties, caught many by surprise

0:00:27 > 0:00:30with snow fall being heaviest in Hertfordshire and north London.

0:00:30 > 0:00:37But as always, there were children who welcomed it.

0:00:37 > 0:00:47There weren't many places, in particular north of the river,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51that didn't wake up to scenes similar to this one in new Barnet.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54And it didn't take long for the fund to begin.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56And it didn't take long for the fun to begin.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58But when there's snow, there's disruption.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00The M25 motorway came to a complete standstill and in Hertfordshire,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03drivers had enough as they waited to join junction eight on the M1,

0:01:03 > 0:01:08unaware that their journey was likely to take hours.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11This was Potters Bar, the driving make that much

0:01:11 > 0:01:16harder on the motorway because of ungritted roads.

0:01:16 > 0:01:21North London too, moved slowly, if at all, for the same reason.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25No preparation in the form of grit.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28One of my friends was stuck in the car for four hours

0:01:28 > 0:01:29because of the snow.

0:01:29 > 0:01:30Flight was delayed to Aberdeen.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33So an extra night in London.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Luton airport had flights temporarily suspended,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38causing long delays and frustration for passengers.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42One described it as chaos.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44And there were further problems at Heathrow, with snowploughs

0:01:44 > 0:01:46clearing the runways.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49While, on one of the planes, was stranded passenger on a BA

0:01:49 > 0:01:51flight from Seattle, who took these pictures three

0:01:51 > 0:01:54hours after landing.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57The London underground had its share of delays with snow

0:01:57 > 0:02:02causing power problems.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05But most of the network ploughed on, much to the relief of passengers.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09Londoners south of the river were affected as well.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13This was south-east London this afternoon where sleet had started

0:02:13 > 0:02:16to turn snow to mush with a warning tonight to be aware

0:02:16 > 0:02:18of widespread ice.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20And you can keep up with all the latest travel news

0:02:20 > 0:02:22on BBC Radio London, tonight and tomorrow

0:02:22 > 0:02:26morning, as well as on our Twitter feed and website.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31And we'll have the weather forecast for you, in a moment.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Victims of abuse at children's homes in Lambeth are to receive

0:02:35 > 0:02:38compensation from a £100 million fund set up by the council.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41It will include former residents of the 'Shirley Oaks Children's Home'

0:02:41 > 0:02:44near Croydon and money will also be paid to adults who have never

0:02:44 > 0:02:50claimed they were abused.

0:02:50 > 0:02:56Here's Ayshea Buksh.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01It was supposed to be a sanctuary. But the decades, Shirley Oaks

0:03:01 > 0:03:05children's home in Croydon was the centre of an abuse network. The home

0:03:05 > 0:03:11was run by Lambeth Council, who have created a compensation scheme.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16Anyone who lived in a children's home run by the borough can apply.

0:03:16 > 0:03:22It's thought thousands could be eligible. We act on our pledge to

0:03:22 > 0:03:25provide redress for people who have been waiting too long. As well as

0:03:25 > 0:03:29providing compensation, the scheme brings forward specialised

0:03:29 > 0:03:35counselling for people, as well as a formal written apology from myself

0:03:35 > 0:03:39on behalf of previous administrations.But Raymond

0:03:39 > 0:03:43Stevenson, who lived at the home remains distrustful of the council.

0:03:43 > 0:03:51He believes such a scheme should be administered away from Lambeth. An

0:03:51 > 0:03:57important reader scheme is an independent panel. So for this

0:03:57 > 0:04:01council to manufacture an independent redress scheme which has

0:04:01 > 0:04:06no independence is very dark and very offensive to our members. It is

0:04:06 > 0:04:12incredibly hard for some warm who has been so badly down by Lambeth

0:04:12 > 0:04:16Council in the past. We have worked very hard on this scheme, which is

0:04:16 > 0:04:20the first of its kind in the country.Members don't want to

0:04:20 > 0:04:24present evidence to the same people who are abused us. It is an insult.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28This counsel doesn't want any third parties looking at the information

0:04:28 > 0:04:34we have gathered and judging the cases we represent. The survivors,

0:04:34 > 0:04:38such compensation is a significant milestone, but their fight for

0:04:38 > 0:04:42justice and in-depth scrutiny of the past will continue.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45So now back to the weather and the extent of it

0:04:45 > 0:04:46caught many by surprise.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47So let's get the latest forecast.

0:04:48 > 0:04:49Hello, good evening.

0:04:49 > 0:04:56Plenty of snowy scenes around today and they'll still be a lit

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Plenty of snowy scenes around today and there'll still be a lit

0:04:59 > 0:05:00of snowfall overnight tonight.

0:05:00 > 0:05:01Mostly nuisance value, very light and patchy.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02Most places dry.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05A few isolated patches of freezing fog perhaps here and there,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08but ice is going to be the major hazard into tomorrow morning,

0:05:08 > 0:05:10as everything re-freezes onto the roads and pavements

0:05:10 > 0:05:12and watch out for untreated surfaces in particular.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14We've got a Met Office weather warning out for that.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16So watch out for the ice tomorrow morning.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Mostly dry, early start but then through the early morning rush see

0:05:19 > 0:05:21another area of rain just pushing in from the south.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25It will be windy, there could be some sleet and some snow the mix,

0:05:25 > 0:05:26particularly over the higher ground.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Nothing like the scale we sought today.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Still feeling very chilly, that rain.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Possibly the sleet and snow isolated to eastern areas as we head

0:05:33 > 0:05:43through the afternoon and then that system will pull its weight used

0:05:45 > 0:05:47with as we head to the late afternoon and into the evening.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49And very cold night on Monday.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Sunspots could get as low as minus six Celsius.

0:05:51 > 0:05:52Tuesday, dry.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53Still cold with some sunshine.

0:05:53 > 0:05:54That's it.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56I'll be back at 10.20 on BBC One.

0:05:56 > 0:06:03Bye for now.
