0:00:00 > 0:00:12Stay with us on BBC One - it's time for the news where you are...
0:00:12 > 0:00:15Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad. for the news where you are...
0:00:15 > 0:00:19In a year which has seen four terror attacks in London either
0:00:19 > 0:00:21upon Muslims or perpetrated by people claiming to be Muslims,
0:00:21 > 0:00:24today mosques opened their doors to the public, to let them see
0:00:24 > 0:00:25what it's like inside.
0:00:25 > 0:00:27The Prime Minister went to one in Maidenhead,
0:00:27 > 0:00:29while a mosque in west London had its own special visitor.
0:00:30 > 0:00:39Helen Drew was there.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42It's not every day you'd see this in a mosque,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44but today is Visit My Mosque Day.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46The Al Manaar Mosque in west London opened its doors.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48One of their many visitors was the Mayor.
0:00:48 > 0:00:49Fantastic, outstanding.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52I think there is a lot of questions non-Muslims have.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54I think there is a perception that something quite unusual goes
0:00:54 > 0:01:00on behind the doors of a mosque.
0:01:00 > 0:01:03I think it's fantastic that mosques open their doors to show
0:01:03 > 0:01:04they're an open community.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07One of the great things about London is we don't simply
0:01:07 > 0:01:09tolerate difference, we respect it, we celebrate
0:01:09 > 0:01:14it and we embrace it.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17Over 50 mosques in the London area joined in today's open day.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20It's not just about opening their doors on one particular day.
0:01:20 > 0:01:21This mosque played a key role after Grenfell.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24They opened their doors to everyone, they took food parcels in,
0:01:24 > 0:01:29piling them up in all the rooms, and providing shelter.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32What we say, every day of the year is an open day for us,
0:01:32 > 0:01:35because we are open seven days a week and everyone can walk
0:01:35 > 0:01:37in and ask for any service or information they want.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41But we also feel we should do even more, in terms of raising awareness
0:01:41 > 0:01:43about Muslims and the faith itself and the mosque.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45And this certainly appealed to other faith leaders in the borough.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48I think for any of the faith communities, to invite other people
0:01:48 > 0:01:51to come in and share and learn is always going to be
0:01:51 > 0:01:52helpful and positive.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55It's a good thing for the whole of our community, to learn
0:01:55 > 0:01:57about more each other and I welcome it wholeheartedly.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00So much so, that he's now planning an open day
0:02:00 > 0:02:01for his Notting Hill Church.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03The open day for mosques is in its fourth year,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05and is now inspiring other faiths.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07Helen Drew, BBC London News.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09A teenager has been stabbed to death in west London.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12The 19-year-old was found in the early hours of the morning,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14on Logan Place in Kensington.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16He was the fifth teenager to die from a knife wound
0:02:16 > 0:02:19in London, this year.
0:02:19 > 0:02:23Detectives have made an arrest.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27Children in the most deprived areas of London are the most likely
0:02:27 > 0:02:29to be obese by the time they leave primary school.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32The figures have led to a dedicated task force being established
0:02:32 > 0:02:36to tackle the problem.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38Tolu Adayoye has been to an area in east London,
0:02:38 > 0:02:42where some young children told her what they like to eat.
0:02:43 > 0:02:44Ice cream and sausages.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47McDonald's and KFC.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51Pizza, lasagne and pancakes.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55It may taste good, but too much of some of what our children love
0:02:55 > 0:02:58to eat is putting them above recommended healthy weight
0:02:58 > 0:03:03ranges, and the problem of childhood obesity is getting bigger in London.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06At this group promoting healthy eating and exercise in Romford,
0:03:06 > 0:03:09children and parents told me the challenges they can face
0:03:09 > 0:03:13when trying to be healthier.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16It is difficult, because it's advertised and it's out
0:03:16 > 0:03:18there and it's quite easy for children to get.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21The most food that we can get access to is usually junk
0:03:21 > 0:03:27food, crisps and stuff.
0:03:27 > 0:03:28City Hall wants to reverse the trend.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32The search is now on for someone to lead a new panel of experts
0:03:32 > 0:03:33looking at ways to reduce the rates.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36Figures show nearly 40% of children aged ten and 11 in the capital
0:03:36 > 0:03:39are classed as overweight or obese, with weights the highest
0:03:39 > 0:03:40in the most deprived areas.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43In Barking and Dagenham, 44% of Year 6 pupils
0:03:43 > 0:03:44are overweight or obese, compared to Richmond,
0:03:44 > 0:03:49which is the lowest at 25%.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52It's bigger than all of us, but what we can do here,
0:03:52 > 0:03:56as an individual council, is our bit for our local community.
0:03:56 > 0:04:01But I think there are going to need to be lots more joined up thinking,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04like the reducing sugar, the sugar tax.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06The Mayor says he's aiming to significantly reduce
0:04:06 > 0:04:12the unacceptable level of childhood obesity in London by 2028.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16Tolu Adeoye, BBC London News.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31the east, a misty, murky Monday morning, very grey, plenty of thick
0:04:31 > 0:04:35cloud, outbreaks of drizzle, little in the way of brightness. Still
0:04:35 > 0:04:40temperatures in double figures, ten or 11 Celsius. Further outbreaks of
0:04:40 > 0:04:43rain are likely on Tuesday, then from Wednesday onwards, it is
0:04:43 > 0:04:47looking dry and will slowly become colder as we had through the week
0:04:47 > 0:04:50with a chilly easterly wind.
0:04:50 > 0:04:51That's it.
