0:00:00 > 0:00:01We're back with the late News at Ten.

0:00:01 > 0:00:01Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

0:00:02 > 0:00:03Goodbye.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14Hello.

0:00:14 > 0:00:15Welcome to BBC London.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16I'm Chris Rogers.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19First tonight, families took to the streets of south London today

0:00:19 > 0:00:22to protest about the lack of school places for their children.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Later this week, final-year primary school pupils will find out

0:00:24 > 0:00:27which secondary school they have been given.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Ayshea Buskh reports from Bromley, where there's anger that

0:00:30 > 0:00:34a new school may not be open in time for September.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37CHANTING.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Taking their fight for a school place to the streets.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Hundreds of families marched through Bromley town centre,

0:00:42 > 0:00:46angry at the council's decision to not build a new free

0:00:46 > 0:00:50school in the area.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53The march was organised by parents and teachers who want a boys school

0:00:53 > 0:00:59to be built on this playing field in nearby Bickley.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It's owned by Bullers Wood School for Girls, who say an all-boys

0:01:02 > 0:01:04school is needed locally.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07We have 490 applications for

0:01:07 > 0:01:10180 school places, so we know that there is a need and demand

0:01:10 > 0:01:13for this school in this area, and we are deeply disappointed

0:01:13 > 0:01:18about this decision and deeply worried about the prospect

0:01:18 > 0:01:21of opening this September.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24The local council gave the school planning permission but last month

0:01:24 > 0:01:27that decision was overturned, as a different department

0:01:27 > 0:01:30at the council found there were still concerns over

0:01:30 > 0:01:33traffic and road safety.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35The head of the borough's education department told BBC London

0:01:35 > 0:01:39they were disappointed by the decision, but reassured

0:01:39 > 0:01:47parents that all applicants will be given a place at a borough school.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49This family told me they just want to know

0:01:49 > 0:01:51if their first choice for an all boys school

0:01:51 > 0:01:52will be a viable option.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Most of the schools within Bromley are very good schools.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59The problem is that we'd very much like him to go to an all boys school

0:01:59 > 0:02:02like his sister goes to an all girls school, within the area

0:02:02 > 0:02:04that he can walk to.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07I want to make sure I'm at a school, at least.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11And I want to know where I'm going before September so we can

0:02:11 > 0:02:13get everything ready.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16With just days to go before offers to secondary

0:02:16 > 0:02:18schools are confirmed, these parents are still hopeful

0:02:18 > 0:02:23their children will get the school they want.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Changes to the Metropolitan Police to meet a huge budget

0:02:28 > 0:02:31shortfall have been described as a "disaster for London".

0:02:31 > 0:02:35The Met is merging each borough, with the loss of 1,500 jobs,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38to form 12 new command units.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The chair of the Safer Neighbourhood panel for Camden and Islington,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44where the scheme was piloted, says police "simply

0:02:44 > 0:02:47don't have the manpower" to investigate low level crimes.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Helen Mulroy reports.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52Officers searching for hidden knives.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55They are part of policing operations in Camden and Islington,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57brought together to test the idea of merging borough commands,

0:02:57 > 0:03:03but the results of the pilot are worrying for some.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05The impact of the merger has been quite stark.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Those who suffer anti-social crime, low-level crime

0:03:09 > 0:03:11know they are not safe.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Those are areas where the Met are not bothering to investigate,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18they are not bothering to mount investigations.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21They simply don't have the manpower, and that is a direct result

0:03:21 > 0:03:26of pressure that they have through the cost cuts they have

0:03:26 > 0:03:28because of the underfunding by government and by the mayor.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30It's a disaster for London.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34The force needs to save £325 million in 2022, and it's already cut

0:03:34 > 0:03:39600 million from budgets in recent years, resulting in the loss

0:03:39 > 0:03:42of police officers and stations.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Officer numbers are expected to drop below 30,000 by April,

0:03:45 > 0:03:50the first time that's happened since 2003.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51This is highly challenging.

0:03:51 > 0:03:59The reduction in numbers, the change in the pattern of demand,

0:03:59 > 0:04:02the current risk around terror and so there's undoubtedly a huge

0:04:02 > 0:04:04challenge for the Met at the moment, coupled

0:04:04 > 0:04:05with the financial challenge.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08It means we have to think about doing some things differently.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11This week, Sadiq Khan committed an extra £110 million for the Met

0:04:11 > 0:04:13in the next financial year.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15He claims this means City Hall is paying a greater

0:04:15 > 0:04:20percentage of the Met's budget than ever before.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24In a statement, the Home Office said:

0:04:33 > 0:04:38The mergers will be rolled out across London over the next year.

0:04:41 > 0:04:42Well, there's been talk of snow and ice.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Will it be coming tonight?

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Let's find out with Lucy Martin.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Let's find out with Lucy Martin.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50Hello.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53A cold but bright day today, but it will turn increasingly cold

0:04:53 > 0:04:55through the next few days, the risk of some snow.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56A cold night to come.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59We'll see clear skies but cloud tending to increase from the east

0:04:59 > 0:05:01through the early hours, with the risk of one

0:05:02 > 0:05:04or two snow showers.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05Temperatures falling away

0:05:05 > 0:05:07to an overnight low around minus four Celsius.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08We are looking at a very cold night.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11A cold start tomorrow, with a touch of frost.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Tomorrow, a day of sunny spells and snow showers.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Those showers carried in on a brisk north-easterly breeze,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20so it will be feeling very cold, despite temperatures reaching

0:05:20 > 0:05:23a maximum of three Celsius, that cold wind will take

0:05:23 > 0:05:26the edge off.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29As we move into Tuesday, we've got an amber warning in place for snow.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32We could see a substantial amount of snow through the morning.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34A mixture of sunny spells and showers into the afternoon,

0:05:34 > 0:05:36those showers falling as snow, and again feeling very cold.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40Temperatures at a maximum of two Celsius.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41Further snow showers possible on Wednesday,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44another yellow weather warning in place for snow, so stay

0:05:44 > 0:05:47tuned to the forecast.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53We are in for a rough week!

0:05:53 > 0:05:55That's all from the weekend team at BBC London.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57We're back at around 10:20pm tonight.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Until then, goodbye.
