0:00:00 > 0:00:01Richard Westcott, BBC News.
0:00:01 > 0:00:04Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06Goodbye.
0:00:12 > 0:00:17Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.
0:00:17 > 0:00:19This week's snow has had an unexpected impact on a major
0:00:19 > 0:00:21London-based charity, which says it's lost more
0:00:21 > 0:00:23than half a million pounds' worth of donations
0:00:23 > 0:00:26because of the cold snap.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30Some businesses are now ready for trade to pick up.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33Here's Sarah Harris.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Thick snow still blocking narrow country roads in parts of
0:00:35 > 0:00:36Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.
0:00:36 > 0:00:43Cars abandoned last night, still to be collected.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45It has been these conditions that have stopped hundreds of volunteers
0:00:45 > 0:00:48from shaking their buckets to raise money to support patients
0:00:48 > 0:00:55with terminal illnesses.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57These weather conditions are making it near-on impossible.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59So we are really worried about raising enough money
0:00:59 > 0:01:01for the people living with a terminal illness.
0:01:02 > 0:01:03And this soft start thing, then...
0:01:03 > 0:01:05How does that work?
0:01:05 > 0:01:08But not everyone has been a loser in the cold snap.
0:01:08 > 0:01:09This off-road business is doing a roaring trade,
0:01:09 > 0:01:11with contractors working round-the-clock in their
0:01:11 > 0:01:12specialist vehicles.
0:01:12 > 0:01:13This is all done now.
0:01:13 > 0:01:14It has rained tonight.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17I'm going home to wash all my machines and that's
0:01:17 > 0:01:24it for another year.
0:01:24 > 0:01:25Hopefully.
0:01:25 > 0:01:30Definitely.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32And at Frithsden Vineyard, the crops have survived and it's
0:01:32 > 0:01:35hoped the snow will lead to a good vintage earlier than expected.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38It's actually quite difficult to work in because it is so cold
0:01:38 > 0:01:41but not bad for the vines because this cold weather actually
0:01:41 > 0:01:42delays what we call bud burst.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45With temperatures rising again, many are out and about again this
0:01:45 > 0:01:47weekend enjoying the beauty of the snow while it's still here.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50And charity volunteers are once again making their way out
0:01:50 > 0:02:00onto the streets to raise money for those most in need.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08Thames Water has apologised after more than 100
0:02:08 > 0:02:10households in Crystal Palace lost their water supply.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12The firm says engineers are repairing two leaks
0:02:12 > 0:02:15after the company was criticised for not providing bottled water
0:02:15 > 0:02:23to residents who've had no supply since yesterday.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25If you're looking to take up a new sport,
0:02:25 > 0:02:27here's one with its roots in the playground
0:02:27 > 0:02:29from years gone by.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31It's been given the name Wallball - and it's now
0:02:31 > 0:02:32taken quite seriously.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34You might recognise it, and Mike Bushell went
0:02:34 > 0:02:37to try it in west London.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40It's the sport that started in the playground, when we were kids.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43As now they're trying to take it back there again,
0:02:43 > 0:02:44now that it's officially known as Wallball.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46Because the beauty of it is its simplicity.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48All you need is a ball.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52And a wall.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55It's similar to squash but even easier.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59So all you have to do is hit the wall and land in the court
0:02:59 > 0:03:02and then the rally just carries on until someone misses the ball.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05It is derived from the game of Fives, which was first played
0:03:05 > 0:03:07in the chapels of public schools centuries ago.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10But for Fives you need four walls whereas modern Wallball has no such
0:03:10 > 0:03:12confines and can be played anywhere.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14So making it popular with the schoolchildren being given
0:03:14 > 0:03:16taster sessions and people of all abilities and ages.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19I'm like this.
0:03:19 > 0:03:20I go "wang"!
0:03:20 > 0:03:22And does that feel good?
0:03:22 > 0:03:23Yes, really good.
0:03:23 > 0:03:25It's just got me running around, you know?
0:03:25 > 0:03:30And hopefully I will get rid of this paunch.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32The ball is bouncy if you hit it really hard.
0:03:32 > 0:03:38And you don't want to hit it with too much power.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41The British team will compete in the World Cup in the USA
0:03:41 > 0:03:44later this year, with the men's team now in the top five.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47But whether you are being blocked or not, you can always be deceived
0:03:47 > 0:03:56by the bounce of the ball.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58Now time for the weather forecast.
0:03:58 > 0:03:59Hello, there.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03The big thaw has begun and the snow will continue to melt away
0:04:03 > 0:04:05as we head through the rest of the weekend.
0:04:05 > 0:04:07Now, of course, we have got the milder air coming
0:04:07 > 0:04:08in over the colder ground.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12Lots of moisture from the snow melts so a bit of a misty,
0:04:12 > 0:04:14foggy start to the day and more mist patches around tomorrow,
0:04:14 > 0:04:16along with some showers.
0:04:16 > 0:04:17And there are showers, too, overnight tonight.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20This is falling as rain for the most part but possibly a bit wintry over
0:04:20 > 0:04:24the higher ground then we will start to see those mist patches form.
0:04:24 > 0:04:25Temperatures will generally hold above freezing,
0:04:25 > 0:04:281-3 degrees Celsius, but there could possibly be some
0:04:28 > 0:04:31places that drop a little bit below, with the lying snow.
0:04:31 > 0:04:33And there could be some icy stretches into tomorrow morning,
0:04:34 > 0:04:35so watch out for that.
0:04:35 > 0:04:36The mist will slowly life.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39Perhaps time for a bit of brightness before we get some heavy showers
0:04:39 > 0:04:42that will help to wash the rest of the snow away for many places.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45Top temperatures, all the way up to 6-8 degrees Celsius,
0:04:45 > 0:04:48so turning milder and milder still as we head into next week.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51In fact, we could be looking at double figures by the time we get
0:04:51 > 0:04:51to Monday and Tuesday.
0:04:52 > 0:04:52to Monday and Tuesday.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55Lots of dry weather in the sunshine, I dare say it
0:04:55 > 0:04:56will feel quite springlike.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58That's it.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Our next news on BBC One is at the same time tomorrow.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Bye for now.
