:00:07. > :00:12.Hello and welcome to a new week on Look East with Susie and me.

:00:12. > :00:16.Coming up in the next 30 minutes... On a fateful night in Bedford, a

:00:16. > :00:20.young girl walks home and is spotted by a stranger. Moments

:00:20. > :00:24.later, she is raped in an alleyway. Today her attacker is jailed for 22

:00:24. > :00:28.years. A mother's grief after a teenage

:00:29. > :00:33.driver is jailed for killing her son in a road crash. I just think,

:00:34. > :00:39.for us, it is not going to be enough. At the end of the day, we

:00:39. > :00:43.have lost a son. They have lost a son for a couple of years. But they

:00:43. > :00:45.will be able to visit him, see him and carry on their lives with him.

:00:45. > :00:49.We will not have that chance any more.

:00:49. > :00:52.It's the morning crush hour. Train bosses promise an end to scenes

:00:52. > :01:02.like this. And the world-beating Red Bull team

:01:02. > :01:04.

:01:04. > :01:09.get a hero's welcome in Milton Hello. The judge said he is every

:01:09. > :01:12.woman's worst nightmare. Today, a rapist was jailed for 22 years. But

:01:12. > :01:16.detectives believe there may be other victims who have not come

:01:16. > :01:20.forward. Davinder Singh was described in

:01:20. > :01:26.court as a predatory loner. A man who followed women he thought could

:01:26. > :01:29.have been drinking. On the night of one attack, he was filmed on a

:01:29. > :01:32.security camera following a young woman as she walked home from a

:01:32. > :01:35.nightclub in Bedford. He was found guilty of raping two women. But

:01:35. > :01:41.throughout the trial at Luton Crown Court, he refused to admit he did

:01:41. > :01:46.it. The full story now from Nikki Jenkins.

:01:46. > :01:50.Brazen audacity and the malicious disregard for his victims have been

:01:50. > :01:54.at the hallmarks of this case. That was summed up in extraordinary

:01:54. > :01:59.events on Friday when Davinder Singh dismissed his barrister and

:01:59. > :02:04.took to the stand, still blaming his victims, producing a blade,

:02:04. > :02:09.slashing his arm and holding it to his own throat. His decision to

:02:09. > :02:13.hold the court to ransom did not impress the judge, dismissing it as

:02:14. > :02:19.a work of theatre, saying no one should be in any doubt about his

:02:19. > :02:25.guilt. He exploited his explicit knowledge of the streets of Bedford

:02:25. > :02:30.to stock vulnerable women. November last year. A woman carries

:02:30. > :02:34.her shoes after a night of dancing. She and one of her friends are seen

:02:34. > :02:42.heading through the town centre of. Hidden in the shadows is another

:02:42. > :02:47.figure. Davinder Singh. -- in the centre of Bedford. He seized his

:02:47. > :02:52.opportunity. She has come down here, she has needed the toilet, and

:02:52. > :02:57.crouches between two rubbish bins. She gets to this position when she

:02:57. > :03:03.was grabbed and taken down an alleyway. He is such a predatory a

:03:03. > :03:10.Fender. She even asked her friend at Tuesday at the end of the

:03:10. > :03:14.alleyway. -- John Fender. He was shouting her name. Why did she not

:03:14. > :03:20.respond? Davinder Singh said he would stab her if she shouted out.

:03:21. > :03:26.As a father, I felt I was not there. It is my job to protect your

:03:26. > :03:31.children. I was not there. The girl and her family have talked about

:03:31. > :03:35.this to encourage more rape victims to come forward. I cannot take away

:03:35. > :03:42.the fact that it has happened to me. But you feel good knowing you have

:03:42. > :03:46.done something about it. confident, so brazen was this man

:03:46. > :03:56.that police automatically checked past caseloads. Similar assaults

:03:56. > :04:03.were found. A woman was raped on waste ground. I am scared, I want

:04:03. > :04:11.to go home. This distressing 999 call goes on for at least an hour.

:04:11. > :04:16.But Davinder Singh said she consented. She was coming on to me.

:04:16. > :04:23.I went along with it. We went off into some Bruces and had consensual

:04:23. > :04:30.sex. -- bushes. But as we were doing it, I noticed bruises on her

:04:30. > :04:35.stomach. Then I stopped and felt it was not right. Eventually, both

:04:35. > :04:40.women gave evidence against him, but we think there could be more.

:04:40. > :04:44.cannot imagine it is only two. There are other women in bed for

:04:44. > :04:50.two who have been attacked. fighting back has given this young

:04:50. > :04:59.woman her life back. I do not think of myself as a victim. He is my

:04:59. > :05:05.victim, because I had him put away. That was Davinder Singh's second

:05:05. > :05:10.victim. The young mother he raped in 2008 also gave evidence,

:05:10. > :05:14.witnessing the double trauma of witnessing that outburst on Friday.

:05:14. > :05:19.I actually thought he was going to come for me. I have not been able

:05:20. > :05:26.to sleep. I have pictures of him doing that. The scars he has left

:05:26. > :05:31.me with will never heal. Basically, he knew what he was doing. He felt

:05:31. > :05:34.a bit sorry for his partner and child, but at the end of the day,

:05:34. > :05:40.it happened three years ago why keep doing it. If you make a

:05:40. > :05:45.mistake once, or why carry on? I feel he has done it to other people.

:05:45. > :05:52.But it has taken some brave ones to come forward to get this man put

:05:52. > :05:56.away for a long, long time. He has been sentenced to 22 years.

:05:56. > :06:00.It is a public protection sentence, so he will not be considered for

:06:00. > :06:03.early release unless he can prove he is no longer a danger to the

:06:03. > :06:06.public. Thank you.

:06:06. > :06:10.A teenage driver is beginning a four year prison term tonight after

:06:10. > :06:13.he admitted causing the death of a passenger in a road crash. 18-year-

:06:13. > :06:16.old Luke Barnes was trying to evade the police when his car smashed

:06:16. > :06:19.into a brick wall. The impact killed 15-year-old Ryan Youngman,

:06:19. > :06:22.his front seat passenger. The incident happened in the Norfolk

:06:22. > :06:27.coastal resort of Caister 10 months ago.

:06:27. > :06:32.Just a short time before losing his freedom, a hug for the teenager who

:06:32. > :06:37.killed his friend. A passenger in the stolen car he drove a tie speed

:06:37. > :06:44.whilst pursued by police. Luke Barnes had no driving licence, had

:06:44. > :06:48.taken cannabis before taking three friends for a joyride. It happened

:06:48. > :06:53.last February in Caister-on-Sea. The car drat -- the car crashed

:06:53. > :06:57.into a wall, killing Ryan Youngman. The others clambered out. Police or

:06:57. > :07:01.on alert after reports of a burglary, spotted the car and

:07:01. > :07:06.followed it. At that were driven along Yarmouth Road and accused the

:07:06. > :07:10.high street. He was jailed for four years and three months today for

:07:10. > :07:15.causing death by dangerous driving. The judge told Look Barnes, if I

:07:15. > :07:19.had the power to do what I want, I would turn the clock back, you

:07:19. > :07:24.would never have been out on a stolen car and everyone would be

:07:24. > :07:28.with their families this Christmas. I cannot. The two families at the

:07:28. > :07:33.centre of this tragedy were kept apart during proceedings. Police

:07:33. > :07:39.officers stood nearby. The family of the jailed driver made no

:07:39. > :07:46.comment. But Ryan Youngman's family wanted to top. He has been out of

:07:46. > :07:50.jail since it happened. Never once have I been told he was sorry.

:07:50. > :07:55.Never once was I contacted to see he or the family was sorry. No one

:07:55. > :08:00.has made any advances seeing anything other than silence.

:08:00. > :08:05.remorse was shown in court as well. When he comes out of prison, it

:08:05. > :08:09.would not surprise me if he does the same again. Because a pursued

:08:09. > :08:17.was involved, the independent Police Complaints to commission

:08:17. > :08:20.investigated and concluded officers acted properly and correctly. --

:08:20. > :08:23.the independent Police Complaints Commission investigated.

:08:23. > :08:26.Still to come tonight... A round-up of the action from the football

:08:26. > :08:31.this weekend. Also, long-suffering rail commuters have today been

:08:31. > :08:35.promised an end to standing up on the journey into London. And some

:08:35. > :08:44.nasty weather on the way. A full forecast after more news where you

:08:44. > :08:49.Look East can reveal that all future football matches between

:08:49. > :08:52.Norwich City and Ipswich Town will be played at lunchtime on Sundays.

:08:52. > :08:59.The agreement comes after an official report into disturbances

:08:59. > :09:03.at the derby match in Ipswich last season. We obtained a copy of the

:09:03. > :09:09.report under the Freedom of Information Act.

:09:09. > :09:14.The stand-off before the first evening kick-off. Norwich fans were

:09:14. > :09:20.being exported in front of home supporters. Trouble flared and 400

:09:20. > :09:24.away fans missed the start of the game. 19 people were arrested, 13

:09:24. > :09:30.thrown out of the ground. situation outside the ground was

:09:30. > :09:34.quite dangerous one occasions. Certainly both sets of fans were

:09:34. > :09:39.moved to a closely together for comfort. A lot of missiles worth

:09:39. > :09:45.flying around. -- were flying around. It was a desperate

:09:45. > :09:49.situation. This was the report that addresses complaints of poor

:09:49. > :09:54.policing. Among findings, the timing of the match on a Thursday

:09:54. > :09:58.evening was critical, giving fans time to drink heavily. But the

:09:58. > :10:04.police and clubs wanted the game played on Good Friday. It was

:10:04. > :10:07.Ipswich Town who said they could not afford the increased costs of

:10:07. > :10:11.Bank Holiday police overtime. Norwich City described policing on

:10:11. > :10:16.the night as incompetent and grossly negligent, saying it put

:10:16. > :10:21.the safety and lives of supporters at risk. It is important we do not

:10:21. > :10:26.lose sight of a difficult situation to manage on the night, a very

:10:26. > :10:30.challenging one from the police point of view. But overall a

:10:30. > :10:34.successful operation where we can learn from and react positively to

:10:34. > :10:38.constructive criticism. The report recommends all future derby

:10:38. > :10:44.fixtures should kick-off at Derby lunchtime, pubs it should have a

:10:44. > :10:48.dry hour prior to kick-off and more police should be deployed. It is

:10:48. > :10:53.said there are some inaccuracies. A meeting has been called to address

:10:53. > :11:00.some of those. Police have named the two men

:11:00. > :11:03.killed while walking along a road in the fence. Dominic Ilisse, who

:11:03. > :11:06.was 24 and from Chatteris, and 27- year-old James Keeley from London

:11:06. > :11:09.were hit by a Vauxhall van near March on Sunday morning. An

:11:09. > :11:12.investigation is underway. Police have released this photo of

:11:12. > :11:15.the woman found strangled at a house in Suffolk. 31-year-old

:11:15. > :11:20.Beverley Farrow was found dead in the bedroom of the house in

:11:20. > :11:30.Kesgrave. Darren Hunt, who was 43, was found hanged in the garage.

:11:30. > :11:32.

:11:32. > :11:35.Inquests are due to be held. The mayor of Harwich has told Look

:11:35. > :11:38.East he will be devastated if a row of historic homes, badly damaged in

:11:38. > :11:41.a fire last week, has to be demolished. Parts of the terrace

:11:41. > :11:44.could date back to Tudor times. Local people have already raised

:11:44. > :11:46.thousands of pounds to help the people who live in the houses and

:11:46. > :11:50.are now homeless. I was shown what was left of this

:11:50. > :11:55.man's house. Everything is gone. All he has is the clothes on his

:11:55. > :12:00.back. But the town has rallied round. I have had many officers --

:12:00. > :12:09.many offers to put back family up over Christmas. It has been very

:12:09. > :12:12.humbling. Five houses were all but destroyed in last Wednesday's fire.

:12:12. > :12:19.Its -- its spread quickly. The Fire Service says the fire was

:12:19. > :12:24.accidental, caused by workers on the roof. This photo clearly shows

:12:24. > :12:27.of the Georgian facade. The houses themselves may have been even older.

:12:27. > :12:37.But they are so badly damaged, one option is demolishing them

:12:37. > :12:42.completely. It would be devastating. Harwich is a historic place. We are

:12:42. > :12:46.hoping that at least the frontages can be maintained. It would be very

:12:46. > :12:52.sad. The history is one of the reasons we wanted to be there.

:12:52. > :12:57.say afternoon, the man does that -- he was able to salvage some

:12:57. > :13:04.possessions. A photograph of my late wife. My daughter wanted that.

:13:04. > :13:10.She died of cancer six years ago. But this part of the town's

:13:10. > :13:15.heritage could soon be gone. Sport now. What a weekend for our

:13:15. > :13:18.football teams. There were 22 goals in just four games.

:13:18. > :13:21.Paul Lambert says Norwich will continue to be positive and play

:13:21. > :13:26.attacking football. City's Premier League victory over Newcastle saw

:13:26. > :13:29.them climb to 10th. The wait for a clean sheet goes on. But it is

:13:29. > :13:37.another three points. Not many predicted Saturday's 4-2 win.

:13:37. > :13:44.With the Magpies Flying high, a big canaries win seemed unlikely. That

:13:44. > :13:54.was according to the bookmakers. Did fans have money on that 4-2

:13:54. > :14:04.win? Some did. Some real confidence? There was on Saturday.

:14:04. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:18.Norwich's defence may be leaky, but An equalising on the stroke of

:14:18. > :14:18.

:14:18. > :14:28.half-time. Then Norwich assumed control. Grant Holt made it 2-1.

:14:28. > :14:29.

:14:29. > :14:39.Dan gosling was sent off. Norwich did get a fright. But Grant Holt

:14:39. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:45.People predicted we could be bottom. We might be bottom at the end.

:14:45. > :14:52.There is a long way to go, but we have performed well. Norwich are

:14:52. > :14:56.now seven points clear of the drop zone. At the start of the season,

:14:56. > :15:03.they were close to relegation. Their odds have improved now.

:15:04. > :15:09.City's title odds have slashed from 5,000 to 3,000-1.

:15:09. > :15:12.On to Ipswich. And the message is clear. Let us not get carried away.

:15:12. > :15:19.Paul Jewell admits Saturday's 5-3 win over Barnsley has not fixed all

:15:19. > :15:22.their problems. But it ended a So at last, some if not a lot of

:15:22. > :15:32.breathing space at the bottom of the Championship. Town now three

:15:32. > :15:37.

:15:37. > :15:42.Ipswich were already down to Barnsley at half-time. They were

:15:42. > :15:48.then back on for the second half. Perhaps the biggest have of Paul

:15:48. > :15:54.Jewell's rain. 20 seconds is all it took to get back into the game.

:15:54. > :16:01.Keith Andrews with his first of the evening. He then back the grace.

:16:01. > :16:10.The visitors then got at taste for scoring. And the lead was doubled

:16:10. > :16:17.to make it 4-2. And the points headed back to Suffolk. You have to

:16:17. > :16:27.believe in yourselves. When you are on a run like we have been, you can

:16:27. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:40.stop in believing in yourself. 2-C goal down to winning 5-3, could

:16:40. > :16:40.

:16:40. > :16:44.this be the greatest escape? -- from 2-0.. $WHITE

:16:44. > :16:49.Karl Duguid says he wants to finish his career at Colchester. The 33-

:16:49. > :16:52.year-old scored twice in a 4-1 win over Bury. His opener aided by a

:16:52. > :16:56.slight deflection. Ian Henderson then made it two before Duguid's

:16:56. > :17:00.third. All before half-time. The best of the bunch came from Lloyd

:17:00. > :17:04.James. A dazzling free kick before Bury scored a late consolation. The

:17:04. > :17:06.U's are back into the top half of League One. Southend are off top of

:17:06. > :17:16.League Two, losing 3-0 at Cheltenham. That is back-to-back

:17:16. > :17:19.

:17:19. > :17:22.The daily commute to work is set to become a bit easier for many of the

:17:22. > :17:26.region's railway passengers. Relief is on the way in the shape of

:17:26. > :17:29.longer trains with more seats. And that good news will affect

:17:29. > :17:32.people who use the line from Cambridge in to London. And the

:17:32. > :17:36.Thames Link service from Bedford. Jozef Hall joined commuters today

:17:36. > :17:41.for their first taste of the improved comfort in the carriages.

:17:41. > :17:48.These improvements are right on time. This is seven o'clock Service

:17:48. > :17:54.from Bedford to St Pancras last Thursday. I love my job but read

:17:54. > :17:59.this journey. And what a difference a few more seats makes. It is

:17:59. > :18:05.normally back-to-back, people stood up, so and nice change. So much

:18:05. > :18:09.more comfortable. It is refreshing. It makes travelling a pleasure.

:18:09. > :18:15.was wondering why the train was empty. I did not know about extra

:18:15. > :18:20.trains. But not many seemed to notice. It seems we have come to

:18:20. > :18:27.expect standing. Seems overdue? Passengers have had to put up with

:18:27. > :18:32.a fair bit. It has been a bit much. The extra capacity is what it is

:18:32. > :18:39.about and what we have waited for her. What do these four mac extra

:18:39. > :18:44.carriages mean? Each train now has 250 more seats. With longer trains,

:18:44. > :18:49.you need bigger platforms. We have 12 improved platforms across the

:18:49. > :18:55.region. Equally good news if travelling from Cambridge to

:18:55. > :19:02.Liverpool Street. Another new fleet was unveiled. And this new

:19:02. > :19:06.footbridge. Do these longer trains mean larger ticket prices? We are

:19:06. > :19:11.not going ahead with their price increase. These longer trains are

:19:11. > :19:15.delivered as part of be upgraded and Thames Link programme,

:19:15. > :19:21.delivering more benefits over the years to come. While we wait the

:19:21. > :19:24.answer to that question, we will at least be sitting comfortably.

:19:24. > :19:28.And there is more good news for commuters today on the roads.

:19:28. > :19:32.Andrew Sinclair is here. We will talk about roads in a moment. But

:19:32. > :19:34.first a bit more about the trains, because there is a big event at

:19:35. > :19:39.Parliament later this week. Yes. What is billed as a will summit to

:19:39. > :19:43.pull take place on Thursday. MPs using the London to Norwich line a

:19:43. > :19:46.bringing together rail operators, Norwich real and the Department for

:19:46. > :19:55.Transport to save the line desperately needs improved. --

:19:55. > :19:59.Network Rail. They want to get something done. We shall see. MPs

:19:59. > :20:04.think things can be achieved. Watch this space.

:20:04. > :20:09.The roads now and news about the A14 in Cambridgeshire.

:20:09. > :20:14.developments. 20 million was promised for immediate improvements.

:20:14. > :20:18.Today it was confirmed the money will go on junction improvements.

:20:18. > :20:25.Government has also launched a consultation on a long-term

:20:25. > :20:30.solution to congestion. One option will be whether a toll road could

:20:30. > :20:35.work. This could be contentious. Conservatives believe a toll road

:20:35. > :20:40.is a good way forward. The Liberal Democrats are not so sure. I do not

:20:40. > :20:47.think it is very popular. We could build an entirely new toll road,

:20:47. > :20:53.which will cost 1.5 billion. Or what about extra lanes? How do you

:20:53. > :20:58.make sure who is taking a toll road or who isn't? I think it is a half-

:20:58. > :21:02.baked idea. That is the big debating point over the A14. We

:21:02. > :21:08.expect a decision in the summer. Thank you.

:21:08. > :21:11.What an amazing year it has been for the Red Bull Formula One team.

:21:11. > :21:13.After another world-beating season, the drivers took to the streets of

:21:13. > :21:17.Milton Keynes at the weekend to thank local people for their

:21:17. > :21:27.support. And it was quite a day. 60,000 fans, the unmistakable aroma

:21:27. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:38.of burning rubber and drivers It is a nice way to give something

:21:38. > :21:44.back to the community. There are many fans in the UK.

:21:44. > :21:53.The atmosphere is great. It is a great thing today. A great way of

:21:53. > :21:58.saying thank you. It is fantastic, a chance to see

:21:58. > :22:02.the cars up close without going to be Grand Prix. It is great, a

:23:03. > :23:06.Look like a good day out. New figures out today show the last

:23:06. > :23:11.year has been one of the toughest on record for birdlife in this

:23:11. > :23:16.region. Extreme weather conditions put bird numbers on something of a

:23:16. > :23:20.roller-coaster. Remember, we had the coldest winter for 20 years

:23:20. > :23:23.this time last year. That was followed by a warm, dry spring and

:23:23. > :23:27.a very mild autumn. Some breeds have been hit hard. But as Alex

:23:27. > :23:30.Dolan has been finding out, others are fighting back.

:23:30. > :23:36.The British Trust for Ornithology has its own nature reserve in

:23:40. > :23:47.Last winter's prolonged cold weather made hunting for food a

:23:47. > :23:52.challenge. It may have suited penguins, but populations of many

:23:52. > :23:57.residents species plummeted. Numbers of some birds were at their

:23:57. > :24:07.lowest levels since surveys began in the early 1980s. Species like

:24:08. > :24:13.Robin, song thrush, birds that forage on the ground. They can

:24:13. > :24:18.shelter underneath leaves, for example. Moving forward to the

:24:18. > :24:26.spring, it was exceptionally warm. Did that help? For some residents

:24:27. > :24:30.species, that breed quite early, did very well. We had some higher

:25:22. > :25:32.I hope you enjoyed some of the winter sunshine. Some nasty weather

:25:32. > :25:36.on the way. Some rain moving towards us. This was the calm

:25:36. > :25:42.before the storm. Some strong winds with this rain. The rain continuing

:25:42. > :25:48.its journey eastwards over the next few hours. Persistent through much

:26:02. > :26:06.60 mph and the potential of 50 miles per hour inland. This is

:26:06. > :26:10.about one o'clock in the morning. During the second half of the night,

:26:10. > :26:18.rain clearing away to the East with drier, colder conditions following

:26:29. > :26:35.tomorrow morning, a weather system that brought us the rain clearing

:26:35. > :26:40.away to the East. It is going to be blustery tomorrow, although not as

:26:40. > :26:45.windy as the seating and tonight. Still very blustery and overnight

:26:45. > :26:53.rain clearing. We are left with dry skies and decent sunny spells and

:26:53. > :26:57.some isolated showers. Temperatures similar to today. On the chilly

:26:57. > :27:02.side especially in south-westerly winds which will be moderate to

:27:24. > :27:29.showery conditions on Friday and some wintry showers on the coast on

:27:30. > :27:33.Saturday. Some cold nights to come. That is the forecast.
