:00:58. > :01:03.street at another big name goes into administration, and then gets
:01:03. > :01:09.snapped up. Blacks Leisure is based in Northampton, it has 98 stores
:01:09. > :01:13.across the country and it owns the Millets brand, with another 208
:01:13. > :01:17.shops nationwide. Tonight, JD Sports announced it bought the
:01:17. > :01:21.company's assets. In a moment Mike Liggens reports on the competitors
:01:21. > :01:28.who says they have been beating Blacks at their own game. First we
:01:28. > :01:35.talk to staff at the Northampton HQ It is headquarters and warehouse. A
:01:35. > :01:39.massive building. At the heart of a company with massive debts. Inside,
:01:39. > :01:43.the chief executive, Julia Reynolds, unable to speak on camera, but new
:01:44. > :01:48.owners for a company she described as hobbleling and crippled is good
:01:48. > :01:52.news she told us. Other workers who spoke to us were up beatment
:01:52. > :01:56.think we are all hoping for the best, we are all positive about the
:01:56. > :02:00.future and the products, so we are certainly going to give it the best
:02:00. > :02:05.shot. We have been working on really great projects. For us, it
:02:05. > :02:12.is about moving front the bad times, and moving forward, positively. JD
:02:12. > :02:17.Sports have emerged as their new owner. Taking over 306 shops and
:02:17. > :02:20.3,500 workers. A deal that will see 36 million pounds worth of debt
:02:20. > :02:27.virtually wiped outment there will be changes here. It is thought this
:02:27. > :02:31.place is too big, it costs millions in rent and wages. Round 400 people
:02:31. > :02:36.work here. If there are job losses it is likely most of those will be
:02:36. > :02:40.here. I don't think any economy can take a hit of 400 jobs without
:02:40. > :02:46.reeling a bit. But we need to see that in the context of the job
:02:46. > :02:51.creation in Northampton, which is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

:03:01. > :03:03.bills they are having to cope w and there is a lack of confidence, I
:03:03. > :03:08.think, in the current environment, because people just don't foe what
:03:08. > :03:11.is going to happen. There is bad news stories every day and that is
:03:11. > :03:16.making people wary of spending money they haven't got. It is a
:03:16. > :03:24.company that in one form or another has been based in Northamptonshire
:03:24. > :03:29.since the '70s. One of our big companies. Going through big change.
:03:29. > :03:39.So, why is Blacks in trouble? One reason, a number of new competitors.
:03:39. > :03:41.
:03:41. > :03:45.Mike Liggens has been talking to Go outdoors and Mountain Warehouse. Go
:03:45. > :03:48.Outdoors have five stores in the east at Basildon, Bedford,
:03:48. > :03:53.Colchester Harlow and here in Norwich. It is a company which has
:03:53. > :03:58.grown rapidly overing ten stores in the last 12 months. So, what is the
:03:58. > :04:03.recipe for success? It is a couple of things. The size of the stores.
:04:03. > :04:07.We are out-of-town stores and means we can offer a bigger range, free
:04:07. > :04:12.parking, we can display tents that we sell. Fishing gear, climbing
:04:12. > :04:15.gear, bike, everything outdoors and they say it is all ant listening to
:04:16. > :04:21.what the customer wants. When you come to a store like this what are
:04:21. > :04:27.you most interested in, price, quality? Definitely price at the
:04:27. > :04:33.moment. And quality, but also to see the stock they have here, as
:04:33. > :04:38.well. The quality, the goods and etc, we don't go for cheep stuff.
:04:38. > :04:41.You have lots of choice they have most things covered in here. Blacks
:04:41. > :04:49.have simply struggled to stay with the competition. What has happened
:04:49. > :04:54.is they have been squeezed from two different directions. From up
:04:55. > :04:59.market operators like Cotswold, but also from firms like Mountain
:04:59. > :05:06.Warehouse, who are offering value for money. Mountain Warehouse have
:05:06. > :05:11.12 stores in the east, from Bedford to Braintree and bury saint ed
:05:11. > :05:15.mounds, they don't sell the big names, just family friendly own
:05:15. > :05:21.brands. They too have expanded rapidly, opening new stores in they
:05:21. > :05:25.say good locations. We opened our doors in September, it has been
:05:25. > :05:29.slow process but people now we are here, it is fantastic. Trade at
:05:29. > :05:34.Christmas was amazing. Mountain Warehouse claims to have double its
:05:34. > :05:38.internet business in the last 12 months. But none of the rivals are
:05:38. > :05:45.taking pleasure in Blacks current difficulties. They know it is tough
:05:45. > :05:49.and the fight for business is fierce. Meanwhile there is news
:05:49. > :05:54.tonight that another company in trouble could soon be rescued. The
:05:54. > :05:58.Suffolk based retailers Hawkin's Bazaar went into administration on
:05:58. > :06:02.December 30th. More than 300 jobs have gone, and 40 stores are still
:06:02. > :06:08.closed. But tonight, the administrator told Look East that a
:06:08. > :06:11.buyer could step in as soon as next week. It's the January sale the
:06:11. > :06:15.staff never expected to hole. Today this store is still trading,
:06:15. > :06:19.selling what it calls the things you thought had gone forever, and
:06:19. > :06:24.those you never knew existed. a shop I have never been into.
:06:24. > :06:28.Don't know what it does. It is bad in way because it is a sudden shock
:06:28. > :06:35.and they did nice bitss for kids. love nit there. I hope they don't
:06:35. > :06:43.go. It is fun. In 2006 the company's parent group sold a 50%
:06:43. > :06:48.stake in the company. The buyer had plans to expand it to 100 stores in
:06:48. > :06:52.five years. It achieved 65, 40 of those have now been closed. More
:06:52. > :06:56.than 300 workers made run dent and there is concern local businesses
:06:56. > :07:02.will be affected too There is a lot of support businesss that do work
:07:02. > :07:06.there, we have one of the local cafes supplies sandwiches and does
:07:06. > :07:10.buffet, there is lebgtrilings tritions and cleaners so it will
:07:10. > :07:14.have a knock-on effect. And the owner at one particular business
:07:14. > :07:20.here who didn't want to go on camera believes he's will be out-
:07:20. > :07:23.of-pocket by nearly 80,000. He fears too that he will have to make
:07:23. > :07:28.job cuts. Tonight administrators say there is keen interest in the
:07:28. > :07:31.company. A new buyer could be announced next week. I doesn't mean
:07:31. > :07:40.the staff will be re-employed but there is hope the company could
:07:40. > :07:44.survive in some form. Our business correspondent is here, so why is
:07:44. > :07:47.there so much bad news on the high street now? If you are a struggling
:07:47. > :07:52.retailer New Year can be crunch time, because you have taken in
:07:52. > :07:57.money over Christmas, but big bills come due about now, for example
:07:57. > :08:01.quarterly rent, on your buildings, VAT to the Government, and if you
:08:01. > :08:05.simply haven't got the money, you can't carry on, and I think we know
:08:05. > :08:09.that the outlook for consumer spending this year is pretty grim,
:08:09. > :08:13.and some retailers are throwing in the towel. Coming back to JD Sports,
:08:13. > :08:16.their assets have been, sorry, to Blacks, their assets have been
:08:16. > :08:21.bought by JD Sports but they haven't bought the company as such,
:08:21. > :08:25.have they? JD, it looks like will take on 300 stores which form
:08:25. > :08:30.Blacks and Millets. I should explain this deal has been done
:08:31. > :08:34.under a prepack administration. Prepack is where you agree a sale
:08:34. > :08:38.before the administrator is appointed. The advantage is it
:08:38. > :08:43.tends to minimise job losses, because there is less disruption to
:08:43. > :08:47.the business than with a tradition alcollapse. The down side is that
:08:47. > :08:51.creditors tend to lose out big time. We have heard from the report that
:08:51. > :08:56.it looks like the majority of Blacks debt of 36 million will be
:08:56. > :09:01.wiped out, so that is bad news, if you are owed money by Blacks. I
:09:02. > :09:05.think another big question is what happens to the Northampton
:09:05. > :09:11.headquarters, the fact is JD's headquarters are elsewhere. Thank
:09:11. > :09:15.you. A man has died following a helicopter crash near Ely, an
:09:15. > :09:24.eyewitness saw it go down in an industrial estate in Witchford just
:09:24. > :09:29.before midday. Just before 11.30 this morning, a helicopter came
:09:29. > :09:32.crashing down, in the fields just behind me here. Now emergency
:09:32. > :09:36.services have been on the scene, all day, you can probably see the
:09:36. > :09:40.police behind me. We haven't been allowed oin to the scene and there
:09:40. > :09:43.is two reasons, first there were concerns about safety, because
:09:43. > :09:47.petrol was look leaking from the helicopter and the police were
:09:47. > :09:50.concerned about safety. Second of all the field is covered in debris
:09:50. > :09:55.from the crash and the air accident investigation team will have to
:09:55. > :09:58.examine that to determine how and why this crash happened. With me is
:09:58. > :10:02.Pat master son who saw the crash happen. Pat, you were out walking
:10:02. > :10:07.your dog, tell me what you saw. was walking the dog along the side
:10:07. > :10:11.of the airfield. I was aware there was a helicopter above me which is
:10:11. > :10:16.not unusual, carried on walk, all of a sudden it seemed to backfire,
:10:17. > :10:20.and then as I looked up the engine seemed to explode or go bang and
:10:20. > :10:24.basically it plummeted out the sky. I thought it was going to come down
:10:24. > :10:29.on myself and my dog so I was scrambling out of o the way. It
:10:29. > :10:35.came down and I was waiting for it to explode. It didn't when it hit
:10:35. > :10:40.the ground. I ran to it as quickly as I could. It was about 150 yards
:10:40. > :10:44.away. A very strong smell of petrol or diesel there. It was a traumatic
:10:44. > :10:48.scene, and it was very evident that the chap that was in it was
:10:48. > :10:52.deceased. Very sad indeed. I will have to leave it there police say
:10:52. > :10:56.the pilot is from Kent. His family has been involved but -- informled
:10:56. > :11:01.but they are not naming him yet. Later in the programme. A look

:11:05. > :11:15.a seven-year-old with a brain tumour, who is busy setting up his
:11:15. > :11:19.own charity. The police in nor toke still haven't been able to identify
:11:19. > :11:22.a body found on the Sandringham estate. A murder investigation

:11:26. > :11:30.Anmer on New Year's Day. Further tests are taking place this weekend.
:11:30. > :11:33.When police arranged the press conference they had been hoping to
:11:33. > :11:38.provide positive new information on the murder victim. But last night,
:11:38. > :11:43.news from the lab, the latest tests on samples from the remains had not
:11:44. > :11:48.revealed a usable DNA profile. scientists have double checked the
:11:48. > :11:52.processes but due to decomposition the DNA in the samples aren't
:11:52. > :11:57.available. We are going to a different process that will take
:11:57. > :12:01.longer but we are confident that that will provide a full profile.
:12:01. > :12:06.Detailed searches round the copse where a dog walker discovered the

:12:28. > :12:33.events held in the area between the end of August and the end of
:12:33. > :12:37.September. The latest tests carried out are on a femur bone, a leg bone

:12:50. > :12:56.families of missing young women to find out who the victim was. At the
:12:56. > :13:04.moment we don't know her name, or how she died. The police say they
:13:04. > :13:08.are making progress. An American debt collection agency has been

:23:20. > :23:27.to him setting up his own charity. This scar is where I had my drain

:23:32. > :23:37.mountain has to take a range of medication and he has been through

:23:47. > :23:54.on my own and they were giving me blood tests, and transfusions,
:23:54. > :23:58.temperatures. I felt sad. An lonely. It is hard because when he son his
:23:58. > :24:05.own he wants to be normal, wants to play and he can't do that, so it is
:24:05. > :24:12.hard seeing him obviously being ill and lonely as well. But when a
:24:12. > :24:17.charity gave him the chance to meet N-Dubz he decided he wants to help
:24:17. > :24:25.other sick children so he set up his own children called Mason's

:25:09. > :25:15.And there isn't nothing to be worried about. What a special boy.

:25:17. > :25:20.Any more wind this weekend? A little tomorrow but nothing like it
:25:20. > :25:24.has been. Much calmer conditions across the region today. Quite a
:25:24. > :25:29.bit of sunshine, but we have had a weather front approaching from the
:25:29. > :25:32.west, and that is turning things cloudy, already as you can see from
:25:32. > :25:36.this animation on the satellite chart. Eventually that cloud could
:25:36. > :25:40.produce the odd spot of patchy light rain or drizzle and it's the
:25:40. > :25:45.first part of the night that gets colder. Expect temperatures to fall
:25:45. > :25:47.to about 4C at their lower, and mainly westerly winds light to
:25:47. > :25:53.moderate in strength. For the second half of the might the
:25:53. > :25:57.temperatures will lift and the wind speed will freshen. It will turn to
:25:57. > :26:01.a North Westly direction. So, the weekend brings us fairly settled
:26:01. > :26:05.conditions. It is a mainly dry story with sunny spells. A bit of
:26:05. > :26:10.cloud to clear first thing, particularly parts of Essex might
:26:10. > :26:14.have the odd spot of light rain to start W we should see plenty of
:26:14. > :26:19.sunshine across the region and temperatures will peak at 8C. It
:26:19. > :26:23.will be fairly breezy tomorrow, we will have a moderate to fresh wind,
:26:23. > :26:28.so windier conditions than today. But it should stay dry and
:26:28. > :26:31.therefore the afternoon we will see more sunshine. Looking ahead this
:26:31. > :26:36.settled weather is caused by a ridge of high pressure that is
:26:36. > :26:39.building from the south-west, and what it is tending to co-is it is
:26:39. > :26:44.forcing the activity on those fronts to the north of us. If we
:26:44. > :26:48.look to Wednesday you will see we still have high pressure across us,
:26:48. > :26:52.so it should stay settled. So there will be varying ams of sunshine.
:26:52. > :26:58.Temperatures above normal for this time of year. A little breezy
:26:58. > :27:03.tomorrow but lighter wind. If we bring up the overnight lows the

:27:07. > :27:11.that could bring the risk of a touch of ground frost. As you see,
:27:11. > :27:16.most of the days should be dry. Where there is a cloud we might get
:27:16. > :27:22.the odd spot or two of rain but mainly dry. Last night couldn't
