:00:16. > :00:21.Welcome to a new week on BBC Look East. Coming up: A juror who defied

:00:21. > :00:26.a judge by researching a trial on the Internet is sent to prison for

:00:26. > :00:32.six months. Young Mr Bartlett is quoted 2,400

:00:32. > :00:42.to insure his car. If he was Miss Bartlett it would be 1,000 cheaper.

:00:42. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:47.I pitted in, changed Mr Timmis and it dropped by 15%. -- Mr Tim is.

:00:47. > :00:50.Cheers as Norwich keep Chelsea at bay. But it is another raspberry

:00:50. > :01:00.for Ipswich. And I am at the Theatre Royal in

:01:00. > :01:04.

:01:04. > :01:07.Norwich for the opening night of Hello Dolly.

:01:07. > :01:11.Good evening. A college lecturer who served on a Crown Court jury

:01:11. > :01:16.was jailed today after she used the internet to find out more about the

:01:16. > :01:19.case. Theodora Dallas was a member of the jury in the trial of a man

:01:19. > :01:23.at Luton Crown Court to was accused of causing grievous bodily harm,

:01:23. > :01:28.but that night at home she did some research. The next day she talked

:01:28. > :01:32.about what she discovered about the defendant to other members of the

:01:32. > :01:37.jury. This was despite a request from the judge not to go online and

:01:37. > :01:46.not to check out the background to the case. The details now from our

:01:46. > :01:50.Home Affairs correspondent, Sally to do so. -- Sally Chidzoy.

:01:50. > :01:55.I juror has been jailed. This will send shock waves through the courts

:01:55. > :02:00.system. From now on, all jurors will have this case on their minds.

:02:00. > :02:04.This is what happens when someone acting contempt of court. These

:02:04. > :02:10.were to be the last moments of freedom for Theodora Dallas, seen

:02:10. > :02:16.here in a black coat, as she entered the High Court. The

:02:16. > :02:19.lecturer at Bedford University Pat ignored contempt of court rules and

:02:19. > :02:22.shared information that she researched with fellow jurors. It

:02:22. > :02:26.led to the collapse of the case. For that she was jailed for six

:02:26. > :02:29.months. At the University today, staff made it clear they could not

:02:29. > :02:36.talk about what had happened to their former colleague was up I am

:02:36. > :02:41.not allowed to comment. Someone told you you could not commit?

:02:41. > :02:45.Dallas said that her grasp of English was not that good. She has

:02:45. > :02:50.now resigned from her job at the University. She said she had not

:02:50. > :02:54.intended to prejudice the jury. The decision to jail her has drawn this

:02:54. > :02:58.reaction in Luton. I think it was wrong what she did, but I do not

:02:58. > :03:04.think it will send out a message. I do not think the punishment was

:03:04. > :03:08.high enough. Personally, if I was on a jury and it was about someone,

:03:08. > :03:13.I am going to look them up. I am going to find out about what they

:03:13. > :03:18.did and what happened. Even though you are told not to? Yes. At the

:03:18. > :03:22.end of the day, you're not supposed to but you're going to do it

:03:22. > :03:26.because it is curiosity. probably deserves what she got, if

:03:26. > :03:32.not a little more. She should not have done it. I do not know whether

:03:32. > :03:38.she should have been jailed, perhaps a fine or something.

:03:38. > :03:41.mixed reaction there. Theodora Dallas' Parker -- partner spoke to

:03:41. > :03:46.me tonight and said he was very angry with the sentence and was

:03:46. > :03:49.deciding what to do. He then mentioned as a European Court. The

:03:49. > :03:53.couple have spent thousands of pounds on lawyers to try to keep

:03:53. > :03:58.her out of jail. Clearly they did not succeed. They are now lodging

:03:58. > :04:05.an appeal. Let us talk to the legal

:04:05. > :04:09.commentator Joshua Rosenberg. Is this the law setting an example?

:04:09. > :04:13.think the Lord Chief Justice was setting an example, even though the

:04:13. > :04:16.jurors in which Theodora Dallas served were told that someone had

:04:16. > :04:20.quite recently been sent to prison for contempt of court for a

:04:20. > :04:25.comparable case involving Facebook, she said that the judge did not

:04:25. > :04:29.warn her that she could face prison. Here is the Lord Chief Justice

:04:29. > :04:33.sending out a very clear warning to everybody that, yes, if your

:04:33. > :04:36.researcher case on the internet and tell other people about it, you

:04:36. > :04:42.find out things about a defendant's you're not meant to know, then yes

:04:42. > :04:46.you will go to prison. You cannot turn back the clock, can you? The

:04:46. > :04:50.Internet is about there and people will want to look up the details.

:04:50. > :04:55.It must be tempting but it is very dangerous. In her case, she found

:04:55. > :04:58.out about the previous convictions of a defendant, something the jury

:04:58. > :05:04.should not been told. If jurors research on the internet they may

:05:04. > :05:06.find things that are inaccurate. They may know that some -- they may

:05:06. > :05:11.not know that someone who has been convicted was subsequently cleared

:05:11. > :05:15.on appeal. The courts are trying to hold back the tide of people who

:05:15. > :05:20.are saying that they would do it. If everybody does that, the jury

:05:20. > :05:24.system that we moved -- as we know it would end, and a lot of people

:05:24. > :05:30.would think that was a very great loss because a lot of people depend

:05:30. > :05:40.on trial by jury and have faith in it, but if you cannot trust juries

:05:40. > :05:44.to judge on the face of it, then we may have to abandon the system. A

:05:44. > :05:48.in the United States, jurors are simply told to pick things out of

:05:48. > :05:52.their mind. They go to a lot of trouble to try to select jurors who

:05:52. > :05:56.are apparently not prejudiced, who have not made up their mind. It can

:05:56. > :06:00.take weeks and you have jury consultants advising on board saw

:06:00. > :06:04.the jury to go for. I do not think people want to see that here.

:06:04. > :06:14.Basically, you get the first 12 people out of the box, whether they

:06:14. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:18.know about the case or not. Jurors are trusted to judge cases based on

:06:18. > :06:22.the evidence they hear in court. thank you.

:06:22. > :06:29.Later, on the difference between being a Mr or Mrs when it comes to

:06:29. > :06:33.car insurance. We have goals action from the weekend's football. And it

:06:33. > :06:36.is Hello Alex at Hello Dolly. I am at the Theatre Royal in Norwich as

:06:36. > :06:40.they get a carton ready for the first night of Hello Dolly, an

:06:40. > :06:44.amateur production that is taking place here. It has been a tricky

:06:45. > :06:50.time for theatres across the region but many are managing to fill seats.

:06:51. > :06:54.How are they doing it? Find out after more news from your part of

:06:54. > :06:58.the region. 10 senior doctors have sent a

:06:58. > :07:02.letter to a local newspaper saying that Ipswich Hospital has a strong

:07:02. > :07:07.future. It comes at a time when it is losing vascular surgery to

:07:07. > :07:12.Colchester hospital, and the bid to become a Foundation Trust has

:07:12. > :07:16.stalled because of debt. It is a long way from balancing its books

:07:16. > :07:20.but today 10 consultants wrote of their pride in Ipswich Hospital and

:07:20. > :07:27.the quality of its care, and their increasing dismay at reports

:07:27. > :07:33.seeming to predict its demise. In the can descend to this morning,

:07:33. > :07:38.these staff are planning a radiotherapy treatment programme.

:07:38. > :07:44.We may need to think about scanning him again. Dissenters sees some

:07:44. > :07:49.6,000 patients a year, and the number is growing. Masks are used

:07:49. > :07:54.to make sure that patients receive precisely targeted doses of

:07:54. > :07:58.radiotherapy. This doctor is critical of some of the media

:07:58. > :08:05.coverage. Some of the comments were unfair and misrepresented the

:08:05. > :08:15.reality. We have financial challenges but I am clear that we

:08:15. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:18.are committed to as clinicians -- committed as clinicians and we are

:08:18. > :08:24.determined to see it through. cancer Information Centre was set

:08:24. > :08:31.up eight years ago after a local fund-raising campaign. Jan is a

:08:31. > :08:35.volunteer here. 15 years ago I had breast cancer myself and I felt I

:08:35. > :08:39.wanted to put something back into the system. When you hear people in

:08:39. > :08:44.a sense denigrating the hospital, how do you react? As far as the

:08:44. > :08:48.cancer unit is concerned, very cross. I have not, in all the years

:08:48. > :08:53.I have been here, spoken to a patient who is not happy with the

:08:53. > :08:58.treatment and the support and the care that they do get from the

:08:58. > :09:02.Oncology Unit. This week a hospital is unveiling its 2.5 million

:09:02. > :09:06.Linear Accelerator, the latest in a major guided radiotherapy. No-one

:09:06. > :09:10.doubts that the unit faces formidable problems, but the

:09:10. > :09:15.message from staff to a growing local population is, we are here

:09:16. > :09:20.for you and we are staying. There has been mixed news on jobs

:09:20. > :09:26.in our region today. A buyer has been found for Hawkin's Bazaar. The

:09:26. > :09:31.company, based near Beccles, went into administration last month. The

:09:31. > :09:36.deal will save 150 jobs out of 480. They will keep eight stores open,

:09:36. > :09:42.including those in Norwich and Braintree. In Norwich, 153 people

:09:42. > :09:50.will lose their jobs at contractor Fountains. He had contracts for

:09:50. > :09:54.street cleaning and managing parts, open spaces and cemeteries. People

:09:54. > :10:00.have families. I am young, so why will be all right. The older boys

:10:00. > :10:04.have nothing in front of them. Customs officers carried out a

:10:04. > :10:09.number of raids on shops in Essex today in the hunt for counterfeit

:10:09. > :10:11.alcohol. The target for teams from HM Revenue and Customs was a off-

:10:11. > :10:18.licences in Colchester. They were looking for bottles of vodka which

:10:18. > :10:24.could be poisonous. This is a raid, but not for drugs.

:10:24. > :10:31.A what they are looking for our items, Ellis it goods including

:10:31. > :10:35.alcohol and tobacco, also food products that may be out of date or

:10:35. > :10:39.may have been stored or labelled in the incorrect way. Mainly it was

:10:39. > :10:44.alcohol. Shelves were checked for anything that look suspicious was

:10:44. > :10:48.up so far, in one job, we have found quite a few bottles of vodka

:10:48. > :10:56.or which has not had any duty paid on it. There are no stamps on the

:10:56. > :11:03.bottles. They may or may not be counterfeit. The year looks suspect.

:11:03. > :11:07.-- they look suspect. These photographs show spirits taking in

:11:07. > :11:13.previous raids, Hall warehouses full of them, some of them brewed

:11:13. > :11:17.illegally. It has been found to contain anti-freeze or worse.

:11:17. > :11:21.Screen wash is a common factor that we have fun. I opened a bottle a

:11:21. > :11:26.couple of weeks ago and it smelt of acetone. That is very dangerous to

:11:26. > :11:31.drink. If you're a boy in a bottle of alcohol and it really does look

:11:31. > :11:35.too good to be true, it is. alcohol is being taken away by the

:11:35. > :11:41.officers. If they suspect it is counter feet, it will be tested and

:11:41. > :11:45.will also be destroyed. -- counterfeit.

:11:45. > :11:48.The it has been revealed that Essex Police by nearly 2.4 million on

:11:48. > :11:58.the operation to clear the illegal traveller has site at Dale Farm. It

:11:58. > :12:00.

:12:00. > :12:04.was completed in November. -- a travellers' site.

:12:04. > :12:08.None of our teams won at the weekend.

:12:08. > :12:12.Norwich manager Paul Lambert said survival is still the main focus.

:12:12. > :12:16.They drove -- they drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Saturday, their first

:12:16. > :12:19.clean sheet of the season, keeping them in the top half of the Premier

:12:19. > :12:25.League. Chelsea may have had more shots, more chances, more

:12:25. > :12:33.possession, their players certainly cost more. Norwich were disciplined

:12:33. > :12:37.and determined. They paid less than 500,000 for Grant Holt but he is

:12:37. > :12:47.worth his weight in gold. Fernando Torres looks like less of a bargain

:12:47. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :12:57.at the moment. He was taking off. Dizzier at 20 -- 0-0 draw was

:12:57. > :13:03.priceless. It is Norwich's first clean sheet of the season. They are

:13:03. > :13:05.unbeaten in 2012. It stretches the unbeaten run to five games. Any

:13:05. > :13:09.Premier League point is not to be sniffed at, especially when it

:13:09. > :13:14.comes against one of the big hitters. First clean sheet of the

:13:14. > :13:19.season, I thought we were amazing. Really proud. Chelsea expected to

:13:19. > :13:23.win 3-0. It is absolutely brilliant. Can you do leave how well they are

:13:23. > :13:28.doing this season? A they have been fantastic. Lambert has done a

:13:28. > :13:32.fantastic job on a shoestring. Chelsea must be wondering why they

:13:32. > :13:39.spend all that money. Are you hoping just to survive on a bit

:13:39. > :13:44.more? We have to keep our heads first. See what Lambert can do.

:13:44. > :13:49.think we can look above us. We're trying to survive and build the

:13:49. > :13:53.club up. We're not getting carried away. We will take each game as it

:13:53. > :13:57.comes. Hopefully by the end of the season we will still be up there.

:13:57. > :14:07.The fans left happy again. Norwich now break for the FA Cup in the

:14:07. > :14:11.

:14:11. > :14:21.knowledge their Premier League Ipswich Town have now dropped to

:14:21. > :14:22.

:14:22. > :14:29.4th in the table. The game turned on a bizarre incident. Their

:14:29. > :14:38.goalkeeper was sent off. Ipswich fell apart. Robert Snodgrass could

:14:38. > :14:44.hardly believe his luck. Leeds did not have to try to hard for a third.

:14:44. > :14:54.It finished 3-1. The manager had no complaints about the red card.

:14:54. > :14:57.

:14:57. > :15:05.should have stayed on his line. We were up against it with 10 men.

:15:05. > :15:10.That goal was a catalogue of errors. They will never score three easier

:15:10. > :15:16.goals. In League One Colchester fans vented their frustration at

:15:16. > :15:22.John Ward after they lost at John Ward after they lost at

:15:22. > :15:32.Chesterfield. Southend are still top of League Two despite losing at

:15:32. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:38.Shrewsbury. Southend are level on points with Crawley. You can see

:15:38. > :15:48.extended highlights of your team on late kick-off tonight. There is a

:15:48. > :15:54.special report on Ipswich Town. Has special report on Ipswich Town. Has

:15:54. > :15:57.progress been made over the last progress been made over the last

:15:57. > :16:07.four years? The defence has been making these mistakes all season.

:16:07. > :16:09.

:16:09. > :16:19.You are the manager. You have had the resources. More on that tonight

:16:19. > :16:26.

:16:26. > :16:30.Men and women may be as different as Mars and Venus but in their eyes

:16:30. > :16:34.of the law there are almost always equal.

:16:34. > :16:38.They exception is car insurance. It is a fact that women are safer

:16:38. > :16:43.drivers than men. That means insurance companies charge men more.

:16:43. > :16:48.The gap between a premium for a young man and I young woman can be

:16:48. > :16:55.huge. When this man wanted to ensure his

:16:55. > :17:05.first car he was quoted 2,400. So for a laugh he reapplied and

:17:05. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:12.there are women's name. The quote was 1,000 less.

:17:12. > :17:21.This is not exactly the badge of a boy racer. I am sensible. I drive

:17:21. > :17:27.carefully. All I want to do is drive. It is sex discrimination. It

:17:27. > :17:35.is out of proportion. But an is cheap compared to some

:17:35. > :17:40.courts. Young male drivers are seen as a

:17:40. > :17:48.higher risk. I can understand the premium being slightly higher, but

:17:48. > :17:53.you cannot justify charging double. This could be one solution. This

:17:53. > :17:57.man agrees to have his car fitted with a monitoring device. It

:17:57. > :18:03.transmits data to his insurance company. It looks at different

:18:03. > :18:08.behaviours such as speed, and acceleration. It tracks the

:18:08. > :18:18.individual behaviours. The insurance is priced more fairly

:18:18. > :18:28.depending upon how he is driving. This is hundreds of pounds cheaper

:18:28. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:33.than what my friends are paying. is part of the compensation culture.

:18:33. > :18:39.While there is fair access to justice for those with genuine

:18:39. > :18:45.claims there are those who make fraudulent claims. The rules will

:18:45. > :18:55.soon change. Under European law men and women will soon paid similar

:18:55. > :18:56.

:18:56. > :19:00.premiums. Small insurance for this man. -- small comfort.

:19:00. > :19:10.Earlier I spoke to Rob Cummings from the Association of British

:19:10. > :19:14.

:19:14. > :19:23.Insurers. Young male drivers have a high claims frequency. They have a

:19:23. > :19:29.poor safety record on the road. One in three male drivers aged 17 or 18

:19:29. > :19:35.will make a claim. For the equivalent female drivers it is one

:19:35. > :19:40.in sex. In Europe you cannot discriminate between men and women.

:19:40. > :19:50.Why has that rule not come into force here? That comes into force

:19:50. > :19:52.

:19:52. > :20:01.next year. Insurers will no longer be able to use gender. It will have

:20:01. > :20:07.a significant impact. The European Court decided that insurers need

:20:07. > :20:13.time to adapt to the change. Does the insurance industry believe that

:20:13. > :20:20.this ruling is wrong? You still make differentiation on the basis

:20:20. > :20:27.of age? We like to look at as many aspects as possible when placing a

:20:27. > :20:33.premium for customers. I do not want to be a cynic, but when the

:20:33. > :20:42.ruling comes into force, will it be that the insurance of women goes up

:20:42. > :20:45.and the insurers are men does not come down? It does mean that women

:20:46. > :20:55.will see an increase in their premiums? That seems unfair.

:20:56. > :20:58.

:20:58. > :21:05.should balance out. We need reform to a compensation

:21:05. > :21:10.system. It is dysfunctional. We need to see significant reforms in

:21:10. > :21:18.the way that young drivers learn to drive in this country. Thank you.

:21:18. > :21:25.There is more on that issue on Inside Out tonight at 7:25pm.

:21:25. > :21:31.Please get in touch if you have any views on that story.

:21:31. > :21:36.2011 was a tough year for theatres. Ticket sales fell by one million.

:21:36. > :21:41.Theatre managers blame a reduction in grants funding and the economic

:21:41. > :21:45.downturn. But in our region there are signs that most theatres can

:21:45. > :21:50.survive. Tonight in Norwich they are expecting an almost full house

:21:50. > :22:00.for an amateur production of Hello Dolly.

:22:00. > :22:07.I am backstage. It is opening night. I am good data onto the stage. It

:22:07. > :22:13.is all set. One a two audience members are just turning up. It has

:22:13. > :22:23.been a tough year. Some theatres up and well. Four other theatres it

:22:23. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:38.They have had some big names at this theatre. But now the theatre

:22:38. > :22:42.faces an uncertain future. It is owned by Suffolk coastal District

:22:42. > :22:49.Council. With audiences falling the council is now saying enough is

:22:49. > :22:58.enough. The theatre costs 250,000 per year. We are faced with falling

:22:58. > :23:07.audience numbers. It is costing 7.60 per person to get somebody

:23:07. > :23:11.through the door. The theatre started out as a spa. Then there

:23:11. > :23:15.was a bandstand. Then there was a Floral Hall.

:23:15. > :23:21.The theatre manager says finding the right show to be torn is

:23:21. > :23:31.challenging. If a show does not do well it is disappointing. Sometimes

:23:31. > :23:34.

:23:34. > :23:39.you feel that you have failed. It At the Cambridge Arts Theatre the

:23:39. > :23:49.future is better. The chief executive knows how difficult it is

:23:49. > :23:52.

:23:52. > :24:02.in places like Felixstowe. But here attendances are up by 20 %. If you

:24:02. > :24:03.

:24:03. > :24:07.put a great Sean people will come and see it. -- put a good show on.
