:00:08. > :00:12.Care Hello, I'm Simon Newton. The mother of an Essex man found stabbed

:00:13. > :00:15.to death in a park has appe`led for the public's help to catch his

:00:16. > :00:19.killer. James Attfield was found in Castle Park in Colchester on

:00:20. > :00:22.Saturday morning. The father of five, who was 33 and was living with

:00:23. > :00:28.a brain injury, had been st`bbed more than 100 times.

:00:29. > :00:31.Flanked by her partner and two daughters, Julie Finch appe`led for

:00:32. > :00:35.help in finding out who brutally ended the life of her son Jhm, a

:00:36. > :00:40.young man who suffered severe brain damage after being hit by a car four

:00:41. > :00:43.years ago. I would ask the public for any information they max have

:00:44. > :00:46.that could help the police with their enquiries. This to me seems a

:00:47. > :00:51.senseless and horrendous attack on a gentle, vulnerable young man. So

:00:52. > :00:55.please, if anyone saw my son on Friday, please come forward.

:00:56. > :00:58.Somebody somewhere knows solething. No matter how insignificant you may

:00:59. > :01:03.think it is, please inform the police. The maniac is still out

:01:04. > :01:06.there. Meanwhile, a large area of parkland

:01:07. > :01:10.around the river in Colchester remains sealed off. A tent still

:01:11. > :01:15.covering the spot close to Castle Park where Jim Attfield lay dying

:01:16. > :01:26.early on Saturday morning. He had 102 separate knife wounds to his

:01:27. > :01:30.body. If it's a person. It would do that. No normal human being would do

:01:31. > :01:34.something like that to anybody, let alone somebody as vulnerabld as Jim.

:01:35. > :01:39.There is no excuse for that sort of violence at all. I just can't take

:01:40. > :01:45.it in, really. To go through all that, and he was starting to get his

:01:46. > :01:48.life back together and enjoxing his life. So far, there is no clear

:01:49. > :01:51.motive for the murder, and police are unsure whether they are

:01:52. > :01:54.searching for a killer or khllers. Tonight, a 38`year`old man from

:01:55. > :01:56.Colchester has been arrested in connection with the investigation,

:01:57. > :02:02.but police have stressed information from the public is key to

:02:03. > :02:05.discovering who killed Jim @ttfield. This is a map of Britain showing

:02:06. > :02:09.today's pollution levels. The east, in purple, had the highest of

:02:10. > :02:13.anywhere in the country. Thhs evening in one part of Essex, the

:02:14. > :02:23.level has risen from six to seven, which is classified as high.

:02:24. > :02:28.Ipswich docks this morning, the town cloaked in a murky mist, and this is

:02:29. > :02:32.why. A perfect recipe for vdry high air pollution. Fine dust whhpped up

:02:33. > :02:35.in the Sahara was carried into the atmosphere, and mixed with

:02:36. > :02:39.industrial pollution from cdntral Europe. Both were carried across the

:02:40. > :02:43.sea on light winds, the high levels of pollution first hitting the

:02:44. > :02:48.Anglian coast yesterday. It has been building ever since. That, `long

:02:49. > :02:51.with our own pollution, has caused issues with the air quality over the

:02:52. > :02:56.last few days. It is a perfdct storm in a sense, with the wind so alike,

:02:57. > :03:00.there is nothing to dispersd the pollution, so that will sit there

:03:01. > :03:05.until either the winds pick up and we get fresh air from the Atlantic.

:03:06. > :03:08.On the DEFRA website, the hhghest alert possible. This GP practice has

:03:09. > :03:18.seen a sharp rise in the nulber of patients with breathing

:03:19. > :03:23.difficulties, so votes and stinging eyes. There are a riot gear things

:03:24. > :03:28.in the pollution, which cause irritation in the lungs, whhch mean

:03:29. > :03:33.that the small airways closd up and left air gets into the lungs, less

:03:34. > :03:36.oxygen gets into our bodies. In recent days, scientists in Norwich

:03:37. > :03:42.have seen levels of nitrogen oxide rise steadily, but a repeat of 952,

:03:43. > :03:47.this is not. London experienced pollution with particle levdls about

:03:48. > :03:51.100 times higher than they currently are in these conditions tod`y. There

:03:52. > :03:55.is respite in sight. Tomorrow, pollution levels are forecast to

:03:56. > :03:57.fall from very high to hide. By Friday, a change in wind direction

:03:58. > :04:00.should clear the remaining pollution away.

:04:01. > :04:03.Firearms officers surrounded a flat in Southend this afternoon `fter

:04:04. > :04:06.concerns were raised for a lan's safety. Nearby residents were

:04:07. > :04:10.evacuated from their homes for a time. A 36`year`old man was later

:04:11. > :04:15.arrested on suspicion of growing cannabis and criminal damagd.

:04:16. > :04:18.After a five`year battle, former workers at a car parts comp`ny in

:04:19. > :04:21.Basildon are being offered compensation. The Visteon plant

:04:22. > :04:25.closed in 2009, leaving hundreds of staff without their full pensions.

:04:26. > :04:28.Ford, Visteon's parent comp`ny, has spent years denying it was

:04:29. > :04:35.responsible for the loss of pensions. Today it agreed to pay the

:04:36. > :04:39.outstanding claims. As you may have seen, Nick Clegg and

:04:40. > :04:42.Nigel Farage went head to hdad again tonight, debating the UK's place in

:04:43. > :04:46.Europe. This region does more trade with Europe than anywhere else, and

:04:47. > :04:47.if we believe the polls, we are the most Eurosceptic part of thd

:04:48. > :04:54.country. Our political corrdspondent This is the Titchwell Naturd Reserve

:04:55. > :04:58.in north Norfolk. They recently spent ?1.2 million here on ` new

:04:59. > :05:01.hide and raising the wall to protect the freshwater marshes from the sea.

:05:02. > :05:09.Two thirds of the money camd from Europe. The new Ipswich frehght line

:05:10. > :05:13.which opened this week was part funded by the EU. In the last seven

:05:14. > :05:15.years, more than ?600 million has been given to universities `nd

:05:16. > :05:21.companies in the region for research and development. To most people here

:05:22. > :05:25.at the European Parliament, it makes complete sense for us to be part of

:05:26. > :05:29.Europe. It benefits each falily in the East of England by ?3,000 a

:05:30. > :05:32.year. That is the value of the extra trade that we bring. Not Labour

:05:33. > :05:35.saying that, not even a polhtician saying that. That's what Brhtish

:05:36. > :05:41.business, the CBI says. But critics point out we pay far more to hear in

:05:42. > :05:45.tax than we ever get back. The political commentator Simon Heffer,

:05:46. > :05:48.he lives in Essex, says it has all gone too far. I drive around bits of

:05:49. > :05:51.Britain and see signs up saxing "paid for by the European

:05:52. > :05:55.Community". Well, we could have paid for it ourselves. I'd rather have

:05:56. > :05:59.that money spent here, and H'd rather the people I elect to govern

:06:00. > :06:03.me decided how to spend it. And even here in Brussels, there are people

:06:04. > :06:06.who agree with him. I think we could do a lot better outside the EU with

:06:07. > :06:10.a suitable trade agreement. But wouldn't we lose out? No, I don t

:06:11. > :06:14.think we would. We would have full access to the EU single market.

:06:15. > :06:21.Remember, we import far mord cars or wine or goods from the EU than we

:06:22. > :06:24.actually export to it. Not surprisingly, most people hdre want

:06:25. > :06:28.us to stay in Europe. But opponents believe the argument is going their

:06:29. > :06:32.way. Well, that's all the news from me.

:06:33. > :06:35.Alex is here now with all the weather. Alex.

:06:36. > :06:39.Alex is here now with all the Thank you. It is quite cloudy across

:06:40. > :06:42.the region with some light rain and Rizal, but the rest of the night

:06:43. > :06:47.looked largely dry. Some missed out there, and we may well develop some

:06:48. > :06:50.frost by the end of the night, but it will not get particularlx cold.

:06:51. > :06:54.Mist and fog to clear first thing, but there should be some long spells

:06:55. > :06:58.of hazy # into the middle of the day, and certainly feeling puite

:06:59. > :07:02.warm inland. Temperatures could get to 18 degrees, maybe a degrde or two

:07:03. > :07:08.higher, with a southeasterlx wind continuing. It will be cooldr on the

:07:09. > :07:10.coast. Allowed in the afternoon may produce isolated showers, btt for

:07:11. > :07:16.most places, it looked like it will stay dry across the East. In a

:07:17. > :07:20.moment, the National forecast, but I will leave you with our outlook and

:07:21. > :07:24.a change of wind direction to a south`westerly will bring a cooler,

:07:25. > :07:30.fresher air flow for Friday. It will be cloudy at times, and the air

:07:31. > :07:33.quality is improving slowly. be dry. The air pollution has been

:07:34. > :07:39.hitting the headlines today. For more information on that, here is my

:07:40. > :07:44.colleague. Good evening. Very hazy skies in

:07:45. > :07:51.London today and many other towns and cities across the UK. On

:07:52. > :07:53.Thursday there is the chance of some pretty high pollution in the

:07:54. > :08:00.south-east and East Anglia but by the time we get towards the end of

:08:01. > :08:05.the week, we will see clearer Atlantique air coming in and we

:08:06. > :08:09.should get rid of the Saharan dust which has been making services

:08:10. > :08:15.grubby in the last few days. You can see the pattern across the

:08:16. > :08:18.Atlantic. We also have a weather front.
