:00:00. > :00:08.forget a first look at the papers over on the BBC News Channel. But
:00:09. > :00:15.Good evening. I'm Jenny Kirk. 1 members of a family from Norfolk who
:00:16. > :00:18.kidnapped and tortured a prdgnant woman and her partner have been
:00:19. > :00:21.jailed. They were trying to extract confessions, convinced that the pair
:00:22. > :00:26.had killed their relative Gdrtrude Frankham. She'd actually didd from
:00:27. > :00:30.natural causes. Here's our home affairs correspondent Sally Chidzoy.
:00:31. > :00:34.Behind bars tonight, members of a family fixated on revenge. They re
:00:35. > :00:36.the daughters, grandchildren, great`grandchildren and a
:00:37. > :00:42.daughter`in`law of Gertrude Frankham, the widowed matri`rch of
:00:43. > :00:46.the family. She had been married to Eli Frankham, often describdd as
:00:47. > :00:50."king of the gypsies". Norwhch Crown Court heard how Gertrude was found
:00:51. > :00:54.dead in her bed in December 201 . The family were convinced she'd been
:00:55. > :00:58.murdered. They kidnapped thd man they believed responsible and his
:00:59. > :01:02.heavily pregnant partner. They severely beat them in an attempt to
:01:03. > :01:09.extract confessions. They fhlmed it all. The lady in question bding
:01:10. > :01:12.filmed was very distressed. She was in a lot of pain and discomfort as a
:01:13. > :01:15.result of being physically assaulted. She was assaulted while
:01:16. > :01:23.the camera was running and she was being intimidated. With a mob of
:01:24. > :01:25.people around her, effectivdly. Police were alerted after
:01:26. > :01:27.Gertrude's daughter Sheila Conboy dialled 999 to tell police they had
:01:28. > :01:51.a confession. Police investigated the famhly's
:01:52. > :01:54.murder allegations. Gertrudd's body was excused from Wisbech Celetery.
:01:55. > :02:00.Two pathologists examined hdr remains. Police concluded she'd died
:02:01. > :02:03.from natural causes. Sentencing the 11 defendants to a total of 60 years
:02:04. > :02:07.in jail, the judge, Stephen Holt, said they were a family who saw
:02:08. > :02:10.themselves as being above the law, that they impose their own law. He
:02:11. > :02:13.said they punched, kicked and dragged the male victim into a
:02:14. > :02:17.warehouse and forced him into a chair. It was, he said, a scene
:02:18. > :02:22.reminiscent of some vile Hollywood film. The two victims live `t a
:02:23. > :02:27.secret location under policd protection. The Frankham falily
:02:28. > :02:30.still insist Gertrude was mtrdered. She will get her justice. The
:02:31. > :02:38.Norfolk Police know who the murderer is. On being jailed, none of the
:02:39. > :02:42.family showed remorse. A man who stabbed a young mother to
:02:43. > :02:45.death in Colchester has been given a life sentence. Mark Czapla believed
:02:46. > :02:49.his girlfriend Kirsty Humphrey had been cheating on him. He has never
:02:50. > :02:55.expressed any remorse and whll now serve at least 23 years in prison.
:02:56. > :03:01.He is a coward. This was a despicable attack on his felale
:03:02. > :03:05.partner, Kirsty. And he didn't have even the guts to come to thd court.
:03:06. > :03:10.Either to face the family, to hear the evidence or to hear sentence
:03:11. > :03:12.pronounced upon him by the judge. The ongoing investigation into a
:03:13. > :03:15.helicopter crash in which the Conservative peer Lord Ballxedmond
:03:16. > :03:20.and three other people were killed has not yet found any technhcal
:03:21. > :03:23.malfunction. The helicopter came down in thick fog at Gillingham
:03:24. > :03:27.near Beccles, three weeks ago, just after it had taken off. The Air
:03:28. > :03:32.Accident Investigation Branch say they'll now be focusing on the lack
:03:33. > :03:35.of visibility. There are so many potholes on the
:03:36. > :03:39.roads in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex that it could take years to clear
:03:40. > :03:42.the backlog of repairs. Our councils are now getting just over ?8.5
:03:43. > :03:47.million from the Government for repairs. But the money won't cover
:03:48. > :03:56.all the work needed. Matt Precey has more.
:03:57. > :04:01.Last year severe or whether caused severe damage to the roads. The
:04:02. > :04:06.problem was prolonged and torrential rain this year. In the last six
:04:07. > :04:09.months, Suffolk county council alone has repaired 9500 potholes. The
:04:10. > :04:12.roads have been saturated and any minor cracks or small holes in the
:04:13. > :04:16.road, the water finds its w`y in there. The pressure from thd tyres
:04:17. > :04:22.on the road expands those holes and the inevitable consequence hs more
:04:23. > :04:25.potholes breaking out. And the Government has provided extra
:04:26. > :04:30.funding for repairs. Norfolk gets the most, with more than ?3.5
:04:31. > :04:37.million. Essex and Suffolk nearly ?3 million. But according to today s
:04:38. > :04:43.report, it will take approxhmately eight years to clear the backlog.
:04:44. > :04:47.They predict that at this r`te, some of the roads won't be resurfaced for
:04:48. > :04:51.decades. Councils tell us that despite the extra money, it's simply
:04:52. > :04:54.not good enough and they won't be able to deal with all the potholes.
:04:55. > :04:58.We currently spend around ?6 million a year on repairing potholes and
:04:59. > :05:01.patching roads. That is the more reactive maintenance. We've spent
:05:02. > :05:05.approximately, last financi`l year, about ?18 million on more
:05:06. > :05:14.preventative work. So that really puts the figure into context. And
:05:15. > :05:21.you've been telling us your potholes stories. Emma called to say that her
:05:22. > :05:28.road had 20 to 30 potholes despite repairs. On Facebook, Simon said
:05:29. > :05:33.that a particular road in Chelmsford was the worst he had ever sden.
:05:34. > :05:38.Peter said this photo that he took yesterday. If you know of any
:05:39. > :05:43.examples of potholes near you, get in touch with us. More on this on
:05:44. > :05:46.the programme tomorrow. The club captain at Norwich City
:05:47. > :05:50.says giving the fans their loney back following their defeat against
:05:51. > :05:54.Swansea on Saturday is not ` PR stunt. The Canaries lost 3`0, their
:05:55. > :05:58.ninth away defeat in a row. Almost 900 fans will be getting ?20 each
:05:59. > :06:05.and the players are paying for it themselves. This club is a bit
:06:06. > :06:08.different to a few in this league. I feel the relationship betwedn the
:06:09. > :06:12.fans and the players is different and is closer than many clubs. Round
:06:13. > :06:16.the city, it's not the biggdst city, so you're bumping into fans
:06:17. > :06:20.constantly. You don't get that in a lot of places. We just want to
:06:21. > :06:24.emphasise that and how good they've been for us and we're going to need
:06:25. > :06:26.them to be exactly the same come the next. They've backed us homd and
:06:27. > :06:31.away. And with talk of smog and pollution
:06:32. > :06:35.levels being higher in our region than anywhere else in the country
:06:36. > :06:39.for two days now, who better to tell us if this is going to conthnue than
:06:40. > :06:43.Alex with the weather? We are going to change the wind
:06:44. > :06:46.direction to a south`westerly. It comes about because of this weather
:06:47. > :06:56.front pushing in from the Atlantic, bringing clean and fresh air. It
:06:57. > :07:02.should stay dry and not particularly cold tonight. Lows of around nine.
:07:03. > :07:05.We kick off tomorrow with qtite a bit of cloud and some mist patches
:07:06. > :07:09.through the morning so it m`y be overcast. Into the afternoon, the
:07:10. > :07:14.chance of seeing something bright and even some sunshine. A lhght west
:07:15. > :07:23.or south`westerly winds tomorrow. We might just get up to 16 Celsius
:07:24. > :07:26.somewhere, which is 61 Fahrdnheit. A better chance of sunshine into the
:07:27. > :07:32.afternoon. Peter Gibbs has the national forecast next. For the
:07:33. > :07:33.weekend, some dry weather around but also some wet weather.
:07:34. > :07:35.had today. That is the way the weather looks. Now the latest on the
:07:36. > :07:46.pesky pollution. Good evening. They say a change of
:07:47. > :07:47.air is good for you and that is what we have on the way. The brush
