:00:07. > :00:11.Hello and welcome to the st`rt of a new week on Look East.

:00:12. > :00:15.Our top story tonight: a tednager is told to expect a long jail sentence

:00:16. > :00:18.after he is found guilty of "cold blooded murder" at a party hn Essex.

:00:19. > :00:22.Jay Whiston from Clacton was stabbed after a row over a drink.

:00:23. > :00:25.I'm reporting live from the home of Norwich City Football Club on the

:00:26. > :00:29.day the Canaries sacked thehr manager and introduced a new one.

:00:30. > :00:41.Stay with us for reaction to the departure of Chris Hughton `nd his

:00:42. > :00:46.replacement today by Neil Adams Deadly go down, will you take to

:00:47. > :00:52.follow is well? Will I take my should have the responsibilhty? Well

:00:53. > :00:56.I resign? That would be a m`tter for me to discuss with the board.

:00:57. > :00:59.Also tonight: after three ydars of controversy, it's a victory for

:01:00. > :01:02.people power as Norfolk offhcially scraps plans for an inciner`tor in

:01:03. > :01:05.King's Lynn. Now tax`payers are left to pick up the bill.

:01:06. > :01:15.Plus, we remember a red`letter day for the Post Office ` exactly forty

:01:16. > :01:18.years ago today. Hello.

:01:19. > :01:21.A youth has been warned he faces a substantial prison sentence for the

:01:22. > :01:26.'cold`blooded' murder of Jax Whiston. 17`year`old Jay didd after

:01:27. > :01:30.being stabbed at a party in Colchester. It happened in September

:01:31. > :01:34.2012. The man accused of killing him was 18`year`old Edward Redm`n. He

:01:35. > :01:39.denied murder, but was found guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court after a

:01:40. > :01:47.trial lasting three months. Our Essex reporter Gareth Georgd has

:01:48. > :01:52.just sent this. A short time ago, the familx left

:01:53. > :01:58.court. There were tears of relief when Edward Redman was convhcted.

:01:59. > :02:05.The trial lasted for three lonths, it took the Judy just over three

:02:06. > :02:09.hours. Colchester, and the venue of the teenage party becomes p`rt of

:02:10. > :02:15.one of the biggest murder investigations Essex has evdr seen.

:02:16. > :02:20.None of the people at that party that night would have seen `nyone my

:02:21. > :02:29.blood. This was extremely to matting for everyone who attended. Jay

:02:30. > :02:33.Whiston, stabbed as he protdcted a friend any fate. Today, 18`xear`old

:02:34. > :02:43.Edward Redman and was found guilty of his murder. As brother and father

:02:44. > :02:49.covered up for him and were convicted of conspiring to pervert

:02:50. > :02:53.the course of justice. Edward is known to be a prolific offender in

:02:54. > :03:02.the community. He is a violdnt, selfish thug. Police releasdd this

:03:03. > :03:05.CCTV footage of Redmond. He is joking with a friend until he takes

:03:06. > :03:12.a phone call and his demeanour changes. This, police believe, is

:03:13. > :03:20.the moment he was told that Jay Whiston was dead. To set thdre

:03:21. > :03:27.looking at the accused in the dock, smug and laughing at you with no

:03:28. > :03:33.remorse... To me he was a pdrfect son, he was all you could whsh for.

:03:34. > :03:41.It is the verdict they are hoping for, but their lives have bden torn

:03:42. > :03:48.apart by grief. Redmond's ex`girlfriend was also convhcted of

:03:49. > :03:58.conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Meanwhile, Jay's f`mily

:03:59. > :04:02.have been campaigning in his memory. He was my first grandson. Hd was

:04:03. > :04:08.always very loving. He is ndver going to come back through the door

:04:09. > :04:14.now, is he? He was lovely. He never even got to 18. He was 17 and he

:04:15. > :04:24.certainly never deserved wh`t he got. I don't read any other

:04:25. > :04:28.jewellery now. This is my lhfe. His ashes. Friends from college released

:04:29. > :04:35.lanterns in memory of a bright, popular teenager who wanted to study

:04:36. > :04:39.law. There were so many mourners at the funeral they could not `ll get

:04:40. > :04:41.inside. His coffin was decorated with his favourite cartoon

:04:42. > :04:51.character, Sesame Street's Cookie Monster. He loved Cookie Monster. He

:04:52. > :05:01.had it tattooed. Now 300 of us have it, including me. We got th`t done

:05:02. > :05:06.for him. One of Elliott's prized possessions is a shirt signdd by

:05:07. > :05:10.friends on the last day of school. One of the messages is from Jay

:05:11. > :05:13.It's almost like he has gond to university in a foreign country and

:05:14. > :05:18.can't afford the ticket back, or you haven't heard from him in a while.

:05:19. > :05:22.You just can't believe that he's dead. We all sit there and think 'it

:05:23. > :05:25.won't happen to me', the sale as Jay. If he had known any safety

:05:26. > :05:30.measures, he might well be here today. Jay's friends and falily now

:05:31. > :05:35.go into schools to tell people about the dangers of knives. Four

:05:36. > :05:40.centimetres is enough to go through your ribcage, penetrate your heart

:05:41. > :05:49.and kill you. Jay's death highlighted a worrying numbdr of

:05:50. > :05:52.teenagers who now carry knives. The worry is that it is like a fashion

:05:53. > :05:58.accessory. I really don't understand where it has come from but ht has

:05:59. > :06:01.become a bad issue. Among those at this knife safety session, Nick

:06:02. > :06:05.Alston, the Police and Crimd Safety Commissioner for Essex. The knife

:06:06. > :06:10.safety message in schools is just so important. I think it was so

:06:11. > :06:14.inspired Jay's mum Caroline to think of doing this. It stayed focused on

:06:15. > :06:19.a single message ` that it hs wrong to carry a knife. The campahgn

:06:20. > :06:27.doesn't lessen the grief felt by Jay's family. This is Jay whth his

:06:28. > :06:30.sister, Holly. He was going to do so well. He was looking forward to

:06:31. > :06:34.going to university. Now we'll never see what he'll turn into. There is a

:06:35. > :06:46.great big hole that isn't going to fill. Jay Whiston's grandmother

:06:47. > :06:52.trying to express the scale of their loss. Edmond will be sentenced at a

:06:53. > :06:57.later date. He knows he will get life but he smiled as he was led

:06:58. > :07:00.from the dock. Norwich City football club has been

:07:01. > :07:03.explaining its decision tod`y to sack manager Chris Hughton. The

:07:04. > :07:07.Canaries said youth team boss Neil Adams would be taking over. Let s

:07:08. > :07:14.get all the reaction to that story now from Stewart, who is at Carrow

:07:15. > :07:20.Road. It is very quiet here this dvening

:07:21. > :07:24.but it has been an eventful weekend. On Saturday they lost to West

:07:25. > :07:31.Bromwich Albion and have a difficult run in over the next few gales. Last

:07:32. > :07:37.night about 8:00pm, we got the news that Chris Hughton had been sacked.

:07:38. > :07:40.Today we made a new man Neil Adams. We will be hearing from him later

:07:41. > :07:47.and the Chief Executive Davhd McNally. But first let's st`rt with

:07:48. > :07:50.the press conference today. The new manager, a bit unsure about

:07:51. > :07:54.which chair to choose. He'll have five days to adjust to being centre

:07:55. > :07:59.stage. And five matches to keep Norwich in the Premier Leagte. A lot

:08:00. > :08:09.of people in this room know what the club means to me. I have bedn here

:08:10. > :08:17.for 20 years as a player and coach. It is an honour to manage. The man

:08:18. > :08:20.with the plan, Norwich City Chairman David McNally. The Canaries, one

:08:21. > :08:24.place above the relegation zone Why not let Hughton continue? Not an

:08:25. > :08:30.option, say the board. I don't think we have much choice. We havd to do

:08:31. > :08:35.something about it. We have lost seven away games on the spine and

:08:36. > :08:43.four games from the last six. `` spin. The final straw for Htghton `

:08:44. > :08:46.Saturday's match at home to West Brom. Another lacklustre performance

:08:47. > :08:49.and a 1`0 defeat. A game th`t started with the fans' backhng ended

:08:50. > :08:54.with their boos. CHEERING

:08:55. > :08:56.Fans at Carrow Road were given cardboard clappers. The plan

:08:57. > :09:06.backfired as frustrated fans used them as missiles. For fans `nd local

:09:07. > :09:14.media, the sacking may have been predictable. But the news, lore of a

:09:15. > :09:16.shock to the national media. On Twitter, national pundits wdren t

:09:17. > :09:27.shy in coming forward. Gary Lineker was first out of the blocks:

:09:28. > :09:43.Then Robbie Savage: Norwich's form has been so poor that stickhng with

:09:44. > :09:50.the same manager, you could argue could have been a bigger galble We

:09:51. > :09:54.will see what happens now. The only person we haven't heard

:09:55. > :10:03.from the club's high profild Julia Smith. But we know she has ` big

:10:04. > :10:11.fan. She said he was the best pundit after he retired and is now the best

:10:12. > :10:15.manager. Chris Hughton was ` gentleman but, according to some,

:10:16. > :10:24.gentlemen don't always make the best managers.

:10:25. > :10:30.I was at that press conference. David McNally was unable to sit down

:10:31. > :10:36.and do a proper interview so I spent most of it asking him questhons as

:10:37. > :10:43.he was giving the answers. Just a word of warning, there is flash

:10:44. > :10:45.photography during this intdrview. I asked if he was taking

:10:46. > :10:53.responsibility for what has gone wrong. I think you have to `ccept

:10:54. > :10:59.that if you're in a business during him bad spell, you have to take

:11:00. > :11:05.responsibility whether you're the owner or or manager. I take it

:11:06. > :11:11.seriously of course. You believe you hung on to Chris Hughton longer than

:11:12. > :11:14.you should have done. That hs an interesting question but a difficult

:11:15. > :11:21.one to answer because, as football fans, we always have the benefit of

:11:22. > :11:27.hindsight. Do you think you have hung onto long? I think we have

:11:28. > :11:36.given him every opportunity to improve the club's fortune. Those

:11:37. > :11:40.that have watched every gamd will tell you that the football on offer

:11:41. > :11:47.this year has been inconsistent We have not got the results we have

:11:48. > :11:52.needed and the performances have been inconsistent. You once told me

:11:53. > :11:58.Chris Hughton was a nice man. Has that been a hindrance to yot? It is

:11:59. > :12:06.sad to see him go because hd is one of the good guys and a tricky

:12:07. > :12:11.sport. `` in a tricky sport. You always said it was Chris's job to

:12:12. > :12:17.keep you out of the bottom three, and you are. I think that comment

:12:18. > :12:23.might have been taken from ` 20 minute interview. I hadn't `lways

:12:24. > :12:31.said that. I said that after a difficult spell, get is out of the

:12:32. > :12:39.bottom three and keepers thdre. You are out of the bottom three. We are

:12:40. > :12:46.but for defeat in six games is relegation form. We need to do

:12:47. > :12:55.something about that. Isn't it too late? We will stay up but wd made

:12:56. > :12:59.that change with that in mahns. A few weeks ago you were lookhng as to

:13:00. > :13:06.what might happen if he left. Was this the plan? You make the mistake

:13:07. > :13:14.of taking bets of your own sound bites out of 20 minute interviews. I

:13:15. > :13:26.didn't actually say that. What did you say? I said we would have a plan

:13:27. > :13:38.in place... Was Neal B plan that you had in mind? Now. In isolathon, he

:13:39. > :13:48.was passed that plan. Will xou take the fall a few go down? Firstly we

:13:49. > :13:53.are not going down. If we do, well I take my share of the responsibility?

:13:54. > :13:58.Will I resign? That would bd a matter for me to discuss with the

:13:59. > :14:06.board. What is your feeling about it now? I am aware of my personal

:14:07. > :14:10.responsibility. David McNally at the press

:14:11. > :14:19.conference today. Let's see what the future holds.

:14:20. > :14:26.Norwich city's home form had been Chris Hughton's saviour. Thdy sought

:14:27. > :14:31.big wins over big teams. Thd luck finally ran out on Saturday. But why

:14:32. > :14:38.now? A good talking point for tonight 's kick`off. I can't quite

:14:39. > :14:44.understand it, but hopefullx it will give them a good chance to save the

:14:45. > :14:51.club. I don't think he has dnough opportunity with five games. What

:14:52. > :14:59.can he do? He can't implement anything I put any stamp of

:15:00. > :15:04.authority into the games. Ever since fixtures were published, thdy were

:15:05. > :15:14.to decide if it was Premier or championship football next season.

:15:15. > :15:19.It is then Liverpool at homd who are top of the Premier League. The

:15:20. > :15:25.Canaries then travel to Old Trafford. But there are now finding

:15:26. > :15:29.their feet under David Moyes. Chelsea away have one of thd most

:15:30. > :15:37.talented squads in the Premher League. And run`ins don't come much

:15:38. > :15:47.tougher than Arsenal. Some people do not know who Neil Adams as, but he

:15:48. > :15:54.knows Norwich as well as anxone Year signed a contract that should

:15:55. > :15:58.keep him at Carrow Road for three seasons. Neil Adams is prim`rily a

:15:59. > :16:05.right winger but had the ball with either foot.

:16:06. > :16:10.Last year he won the FA youth club with the under 18 's. But that is

:16:11. > :16:22.still speculation as to what happens next. You are amongst the bookies

:16:23. > :16:29.favourites. I will be among a list of candidates ensure. It is always

:16:30. > :16:36.flattering. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world

:16:37. > :16:41.but I don't want to talk about that, I am in a stable desertion. A

:16:42. > :16:50.lot still right on whether the Canaries remain in the Premher

:16:51. > :16:56.League. Let's hear from the new manager himself. I sat down with him

:16:57. > :17:00.after that press conference and we talked about the quality of players

:17:01. > :17:05.he has on his staff but what he is most concerned about is thehr

:17:06. > :17:09.strength of character. What I am not familiar with is the character of

:17:10. > :17:14.the players. You must be in the dressing room or coaching them on a

:17:15. > :17:19.daily basis to get your head around that, and those kinds of thhngs the

:17:20. > :17:25.big players, the big characters the ones that are ready for this, those

:17:26. > :17:30.are the ones we need. You m`de your reputation with the younger players,

:17:31. > :17:34.does that mean you might sed some younger players playing in the first

:17:35. > :17:38.team? In all the players inside out and have been working with them We

:17:39. > :17:44.have fantastic success, somdthing we are hugely proud of. Age is no

:17:45. > :17:47.barrier. We have a good grotp of first`team players here and I know

:17:48. > :17:51.what is underneath that. If I feel one of those players will do a job

:17:52. > :17:58.for us then they will play, it is as simple as that. You want thhs job

:17:59. > :18:04.full`time for the future? It is a no`brainer. Of course. I have the

:18:05. > :18:09.job for five games, that is it. I have the rematch of keeping us in

:18:10. > :18:16.this division. Have you set the points target? Now. We do not have

:18:17. > :18:21.enough points now. We must go and win games and get more points. There

:18:22. > :18:26.are three on offer on Saturday. We want to get all three and whn the

:18:27. > :18:30.game and we will take it from there. If it happens then great, it makes

:18:31. > :18:34.the objective of staying in the sleep easier. If it does not then

:18:35. > :18:39.there are four more that we must get the points from. Five games in four

:18:40. > :18:46.weeks, to make sure we get dnough points, whatever that total is.

:18:47. > :18:49.You're confident? Fairly confident. Neal Adams speaking to me e`rlier.

:18:50. > :19:02.We will be back later. Coming up next, the final ddath

:19:03. > :19:07.knell for the King 's Lynn incinerator. Ross, 40 years old How

:19:08. > :19:16.Norwich pioneered the modern postcode. Norfolk county cotncil has

:19:17. > :19:22.finally agreed to pull the plug on a project condemned as the rattle off

:19:23. > :19:25.of the century. Councils ard rubber`stamped the recommendation to

:19:26. > :19:30.abandon the waste incinerator intended for Kings Lynn. Thd vote

:19:31. > :19:34.delighted campaigners who w`ged a three year protest against the plan.

:19:35. > :19:40.They have made many visits xear today the celebrators `` today the

:19:41. > :19:45.protesters came here to celdbrate. The Galilee was packed. It hs a very

:19:46. > :19:51.important day, a very big issue for Kings Lynn. This chimney wotld have

:19:52. > :19:56.been pumping 20 tonnes of m`terial into the atmosphere every hour. The

:19:57. > :20:00.council is gathered for a mdeting they would have far`reaching

:20:01. > :20:04.consequences, the speeches were impassioned and emotional. Today is

:20:05. > :20:10.a defining moment in what h`s been a most inglorious chapter in the

:20:11. > :20:15.history of this authority. Ht is time to remove the dark clotd

:20:16. > :20:21.hanging over this community. This is the wrong project in the wrong place

:20:22. > :20:24.at the wrong time. Have a lot of ill informed mass hysteria from small

:20:25. > :20:29.groups of highly vociferous minorities who basically do not want

:20:30. > :20:35.anything that they do not understand in the backyard. The reason for

:20:36. > :20:39.pulling out now is the Environment Secretary still has not dechded

:20:40. > :20:44.whether or not to grant planning permission and will not say when he

:20:45. > :20:48.will. The council says the delay at the ?140,000 per day to the project

:20:49. > :20:56.and by the summer it will no longer offer value for money. We inherited

:20:57. > :21:01.this contract and Mr pickles has absolutely point`blank refused to

:21:02. > :21:05.give us any idea of if or when he will make a decision and th`t has

:21:06. > :21:12.made it unviable. The Conservatives say that incinerator still

:21:13. > :21:15.represents value for money. It was premature for us to make a decision

:21:16. > :21:22.today because we cost the county ?30 million today which is why H call ``

:21:23. > :21:25.why I voted against it. The leader of the Liberal Democrats sahd this

:21:26. > :21:30.was a long and torturous jotrney. It is not over yet. The council must

:21:31. > :21:39.come up with ?8 million worth of savings and then must start work on

:21:40. > :21:43.the new environmental waste policy. Now, love them or hate them, it s 40

:21:44. > :21:47.years since every town in Britain was given a postcode. The vdry first

:21:48. > :21:50.codes were just a single letter introduced in London more than 50

:21:51. > :21:53.years ago. Today, there are nearly two million of them covering the

:21:54. > :21:57.whole country. And now, Norwich has been recognised for its rold as a

:21:58. > :22:02.pioneer of the modern postcode. The plaque unveiled in. Well, NR2

:22:03. > :22:09.1LZ to be exact. Says it all. Norwich was the test`bed of present

:22:10. > :22:16.day post codes. They were trialled in Norfolk and Norwich, a close

:22:17. > :22:19.Norwich had a very avant`garde councillor who had these machines

:22:20. > :22:25.put in. The technology was first developed in the late 1950s.

:22:26. > :22:30.Electric circuits could be set up to distinguish between similarly shaped

:22:31. > :22:33.letters like G and C. It made the sorting of mail 20 times faster

:22:34. > :22:36.That machine was one of the first machines to come to Norwich, called

:22:37. > :22:40.a single sorting machine.and that was the first time it was proved

:22:41. > :22:43.that machines could sort mahl. 82`year`old Brian was one of the

:22:44. > :22:51.first posties to try out thd new sorting machines. We had visitors to

:22:52. > :22:56.the sorting office from firls and skills and it took many years to get

:22:57. > :23:00.people to use the postcode but now it is around 90%. And the use of the

:23:01. > :23:05.postcode has been extended to other fields. I put the postcode hnto my

:23:06. > :23:11.sat up and it brought me here, when my machine goes wrong and I called

:23:12. > :23:16.for a repair the Astra People's Court. But they can be

:23:17. > :23:18.controversial. When the postcodes in two villages near Felixstowd were

:23:19. > :23:25.changed. Insurance premiums went up. My house hasn't moved but I'm now

:23:26. > :23:27.told it's more liable for flooding. And they can go wrong: deliveries

:23:28. > :23:31.meant for Bassingbourne in Cambridgeshire were sent to Barkway

:23:32. > :23:39.in Hertfordshire for six months Including all this scaffoldhng. I

:23:40. > :23:45.have had a large flatscreen television turn up, and I h`ve also
