:00:00. > :00:09.Hello I'm Stewart White. First from us. Now

:00:10. > :00:13.Hello I'm Stewart White. First tonight. UKIP are the big winners in

:00:14. > :00:15.the local elections in the East. Winning dozens of seats. The

:00:16. > :00:19.Conservatives lost overall control of three councils in Essex. Labour

:00:20. > :00:23.lost their majority at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Nikki Fox has

:00:24. > :00:28.been looking at what the results mean. For councils in this region.

:00:29. > :00:31.The UKIP leader talked about a political earthquake. And the

:00:32. > :00:34.tremors were felt strongly in our region. Out of ten councils

:00:35. > :00:39.contested in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. This is how many seats each

:00:40. > :00:45.party now holds across the three counties. The Conservatives still

:00:46. > :00:51.have the highest number.158. Labour has the second highest. While the

:00:52. > :00:59.Liberal democrats won 51 seats. UKIP now has the fourth highest number of

:01:00. > :01:03.seats. And this is why the other parties are worried. UKIP have gone

:01:04. > :01:06.from having just one seat to 40. A gain of 39 seats. They've taken them

:01:07. > :01:10.mostly off the Conservatives.but the other parties have also lost out.

:01:11. > :01:14.UKIP still hasn't done enough to control any one council. But what

:01:15. > :01:17.their increase in popularity does mean is that three conservative

:01:18. > :01:23.councils in Essex and the Labour council in Great Yarmouth are now in

:01:24. > :01:26.no overall control. In Basildon and Great Yarmouth the gains were

:01:27. > :01:31.particularly high with a ten fold increase in seats. Andrew Sinclair

:01:32. > :01:37.has been assessing the impact of what's happened.

:01:38. > :01:40.The UKIP leader in Basildon this afternoon congratulating his new

:01:41. > :01:44.councillors. What we have to do is win clusters of seats, if you can

:01:45. > :01:51.show people in a constituency that you can win at a council level you

:01:52. > :01:55.can win at a parliamentary level. Basildon was supposed to be a place

:01:56. > :02:03.to see Labour gains last night but they could only watch seat after

:02:04. > :02:06.seat get taken. It is not just a flash in the pan, these are real

:02:07. > :02:09.people standing for real issues. They're listening to people. People

:02:10. > :02:13.want change and I think the message UKIP has been sending out nationally

:02:14. > :02:16.as well as locally is what people want. The Tories have run this

:02:17. > :02:20.counsel for the last 11 years could not believe it either. There is no

:02:21. > :02:23.doubt UKIP have tapped into what the public are feeling particularly with

:02:24. > :02:33.immigration and the point that they are very frustrated with Europe and

:02:34. > :02:39.want a referendum. Fried is more open a bit more flamboyant. I don't

:02:40. > :02:48.agree what is going on in this country. I think we are being oval

:02:49. > :02:51.one. Overrun. And then came Great Yarmouth. Until today, you could did

:02:52. > :02:54.not have a single seat, this afternoon they gained ten, five from

:02:55. > :02:58.the Tories and five from Labour. W we knew this was on the cards and

:02:59. > :03:04.that they were campaigning well so it is not surprised. Why people

:03:05. > :03:07.voting for them and offer you? `` not for you. People voting for a

:03:08. > :03:12.national issue and that is why. It is a protest vote, this is a party

:03:13. > :03:16.that is made up of a ragtag of people, some of whom of whom have

:03:17. > :03:23.very unsavoury past. UKIP now has a major presence on a number of the

:03:24. > :03:26.region's councils. What has been interesting is UKIP have taken

:03:27. > :03:30.Conservative seat as well as labour. This has halted the Labour

:03:31. > :03:35.advance in places like Basildon, Great Yarmouth. This would be a

:03:36. > :03:37.worry for the Labour leadership at the general election in under a year

:03:38. > :03:50.away. The Conservatives still have the

:03:51. > :03:53.biggest number of seats in this region. But for some sitting MPs.

:03:54. > :03:55.With small majorities. People like Ben Gummer in Ipswich. The rise of

:03:56. > :04:01.UKIP will be a worry. Return Well I'm not sure you can take much

:04:02. > :04:04.from council elections in the way you might suggest. But what I did

:04:05. > :04:08.draw from that, is that Labour should have been doing a lot better.

:04:09. > :04:12.They did not, they did not take their target seats. The Conservative

:04:13. > :04:15.vote has hold held up and UKIP has sent a strong message to all of us.

:04:16. > :04:19.That sounds very upbeat, but actually it was a bad night wasn't

:04:20. > :04:22.it? We lost the seat which we won at the high watermark of when the

:04:23. > :04:26.Conservatives were in opposition. These things happen. The grim faces

:04:27. > :04:29.were on the candidates of the Labour Party. I was delighted we held two

:04:30. > :04:34.marginal seats which was their targets. It shows when you have

:04:35. > :04:41.strong candidates with strong policies, which are known locally,

:04:42. > :04:44.people will vote for them. People do want answers to the question of

:04:45. > :04:47.immigration, you say the Tories are listening and do have answers but

:04:48. > :04:51.obviously people don't think you do have the answers? Obviously people

:04:52. > :04:54.are very frustrated, we need to turn over a huge supertanker, you know

:04:55. > :04:58.this is immigration that has been going on since the early 2000.

:04:59. > :05:03.People feel understandably that this change their communities and it has

:05:04. > :05:08.been too quick. You hear it on the Fox you heard it on the Vox box

:05:09. > :05:13.earlier. Sorry to interrupt you but you have had four for years. These

:05:14. > :05:17.things take time. All I can say to you is Stewart, who is offering a

:05:18. > :05:20.referendum who is likely to win the next election? It is only the

:05:21. > :05:24.Conservative Party. At the next election people have a clear choice,

:05:25. > :05:27.do they want to see our plan for the economic recovery continue, for safe

:05:28. > :05:30.and secure and financially viable future for families in Ipswich and

:05:31. > :05:34.elsewhere or do they want Ed Miliband, the man who helped crash

:05:35. > :05:38.the car in the first place back in office? At that point I think

:05:39. > :05:47.people's minds will be focused on the real choice ahead of them. Ben

:05:48. > :05:50.Gummer. Elsewhere. Labour held onto Norwich. Ipswich and Harlow. The

:05:51. > :05:53.Conservatives held on to Rochford. In Colchester and Brentwood there is

:05:54. > :05:58.still in no overall control. Let's start in Norwich. With Alex Dunlop.

:05:59. > :06:05.Until today, Labour had control of Norwich City Council. The Green

:06:06. > :06:08.Party, the main opposition. CROWD CHEERING

:06:09. > :06:12.And tonight, no change. Every party held their seat. Labour still have

:06:13. > :06:16.an overall majority of three, however UKIP made a strong showing.

:06:17. > :06:20.Clearly, it is a shot against our back, we need to be aware that they

:06:21. > :06:23.are there but it is the Tories who have suffered the most. The Green

:06:24. > :06:27.Party were delighted to hold onto the three wards they contested. The

:06:28. > :06:30.Lib Dems also retained a seat. But the Conservatives are yet to get a

:06:31. > :06:34.single seat on Norwich City Council. Let's go to Kevin Birch, who spent

:06:35. > :06:38.the day in Ipswich. A third of the 48 seats on the

:06:39. > :06:42.council were on the line plus one more through a bi`election. Labour

:06:43. > :06:45.has a firm hold of power and the council leader David Elsmere was

:06:46. > :06:53.looking for more scalps. Holy Wells, the very first declaration was won

:06:54. > :06:55.but the Conservatives held firm. CROWD CHEERING

:06:56. > :06:59.But Labour would make two gains at the expense of the Tories on the

:07:00. > :07:02.night. People were predicting dire results, actually we have a couple

:07:03. > :07:06.of gains. People are pretty happy with what we are doing here in

:07:07. > :07:09.Ipswich and they have voted for us as a result. In Colchester, just one

:07:10. > :07:13.ward changed hands. A Labour gain from the Lib Dems. But the Lib Dems

:07:14. > :07:18.remain the largest party on what is a hung council. There was a strong

:07:19. > :07:23.challenge from UKIP, the party came within 80 votes of gaining a

:07:24. > :07:26.councillor. The good news is, UKIP did not win any seats in Colchester

:07:27. > :07:31.and indeed their leader came fifth in the ward in which he stood.

:07:32. > :07:38.Colchester withstood the Farage barrage, unlike the much of the rest

:07:39. > :07:41.of Essex. BBC Look East. Just to make it clear. The votes for

:07:42. > :07:45.the European parliament will be counted on Sunday. And we'll have

:07:46. > :07:49.more analysis in Look East on Bank Holiday Monday. With extended

:07:50. > :07:53.bulletins across the day. In football. Neil Adams says he's

:07:54. > :07:56.immensely proud to be named as the new manager of Norwich City. He has

:07:57. > :08:00.signed a three year contract. After taking charge for the last five

:08:01. > :08:03.games of the season. He was unable to stop the club being relegated.

:08:04. > :08:15.But says he's determined to get them back to the Premier League. I've

:08:16. > :08:17.been given this job to go back into the Premier League and it's

:08:18. > :08:22.something I look forward to with relish. I'm a supporter of the club

:08:23. > :08:27.and I know how the fans are hurting. It is the same way I am hurting to

:08:28. > :08:31.which is why it is important we give it the best possible season. That's

:08:32. > :08:35.it from me have a great weekend. it the best possible season. That's

:08:36. > :08:42.it from me Good evening mainly dry across the region. As we go through

:08:43. > :08:45.the night will be increasing cloud. It'll turn cloudy with rain in the

:08:46. > :08:51.southern parts. Cloudy and wet in Essex especially. Temperature wise,

:08:52. > :08:55.around 10 Celsius and lights out easily breeze to night. The rain

:08:56. > :09:01.will move north with tomorrow with this area of low pressure keeping us

:09:02. > :09:01.and settled through the day. Rain moving from south to north through

:09:02. > :09:06.the morning and then sunny spells and scattered showers developing in

:09:07. > :09:12.the afternoon. Especially in western parts, some of those showers will be

:09:13. > :09:18.heavy with thunder and hail in the afternoon. Temperatures reaching up

:09:19. > :09:21.to 14`15dC and that'll be with a moderate to light south easterly

:09:22. > :09:25.breeze. Quite chilly towards the coast. In the evening they showers

:09:26. > :09:30.will carry on northwards and it'll start drying out. Peter will have

:09:31. > :09:31.your National forecast here is the outlook. Scattered showers on

:09:32. > :09:34.you over to Peter Gibson and National forecast.
