:00:00. > :00:15.They call it the greatest show on Earth and today the Tour de France

:00:16. > :00:20.has been casting its magic over this region. You can't be anything but

:00:21. > :00:26.impressed by the way the cotnties around England have turned out for

:00:27. > :00:31.this. The best cyclists in the world racing while being cheered by

:00:32. > :00:36.thousands of fans. We have seen it in France but on home territory it

:00:37. > :00:44.is even better. The atmosphdre is amazing. Tonight we are basdd here

:00:45. > :00:47.at thinking field one of dozens of villages where the massive support

:00:48. > :00:53.cast has raced through at speeds sometimes reaching 40 mph. @nd I am

:00:54. > :00:59.in Cambridge read all startdd with the grand depart from just over

:01:00. > :01:14.there. We will have all of the reaction from the city with cycling

:01:15. > :01:19.at its core. They call this the most photographed village in England and

:01:20. > :01:24.it is easy to see why. Especially earlier when it was bathed hn

:01:25. > :01:29.sunlight. There were 10,000 people here watching the Tour de France,

:01:30. > :01:32.through. Around 1 million pdople watched it across the region and in

:01:33. > :01:37.this village and they watchdd it from all sorts of vantage point If

:01:38. > :01:41.you look at the church clock there were people up on top of thd church

:01:42. > :01:46.tower and they reckon that just before 25 past one today thd first

:01:47. > :01:52.two raiders came through. Then we waited around for the half linutes

:01:53. > :01:58.until just before 1:30pm whdn we got the main peloton coming through The

:01:59. > :02:02.astonishing thing is that the embankment behind me was covered by

:02:03. > :02:06.people. Everyone was enjoying a great day. One of the great things

:02:07. > :02:11.about the Tour de France was that everyone got involved. The police

:02:12. > :02:16.were coming through, those on motorcycles, some of them actually

:02:17. > :02:20.took their hands off the handlebars as the cycle through so it has been

:02:21. > :02:23.a great stay here. We will have more of the day's newsletter in the

:02:24. > :02:38.programme but let's start the coverage in Cambridge. Front row,

:02:39. > :02:44.splash of colour, everyone lade it. The city looking its best. We think

:02:45. > :02:50.it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it has seeled so

:02:51. > :02:53.successful they may come back! Cambridge is a great role model for

:02:54. > :02:59.the other towns in Britain to see what can be achieved. The UK's

:03:00. > :03:05.cycling capital, a match made in heaven with a British fuel. How did

:03:06. > :03:11.it go? And should be a straightforward run. Compardd to the

:03:12. > :03:14.last few days. Receiving a very famous Cambridge sendoff. They will

:03:15. > :03:18.not start racing until later, then it is 12 miles within Cambrhdgeshire

:03:19. > :03:24.before this whole road show moves all of the way through to Essex

:03:25. > :03:30.They can hardly contain thelselves, praying position to greet the pellet

:03:31. > :03:34.on. We are in the heart of the town, it is hard to believe that

:03:35. > :03:40.nearly 200 raiders will squdeze in the year. It will be a good race.

:03:41. > :03:44.The sun is out so this corndr is the best place in town. The crowds and

:03:45. > :03:52.seemingly, it is the best sport I have ever been to. There we are the

:03:53. > :03:57.chasing pack known as the pdllet on, the atmosphere is incredibld. ``

:03:58. > :04:04.peloton. What a view of the action area. So

:04:05. > :04:07.far, so good. All of the rahders are adding safely at the head ott of

:04:08. > :04:12.town and into the heart of the Essex countryside. This is how streets

:04:13. > :04:21.just north of Chelmsford, htndreds converged on the verge having a real

:04:22. > :04:26.blast. Well, almost. No drop`off in peace for the pros, 19 minutes in.

:04:27. > :04:32.Here, the main pack, is chilling moment. A moment of great contrast.

:04:33. > :04:35.For this tiny community, thhs is a camel to is welcome. This h`s been a

:04:36. > :04:42.good couple of months in thd making, when you start looking this morning

:04:43. > :04:45.at four o'clock pulling your hair out to work out where an extra

:04:46. > :04:50.prison with a gazebo goes that is part of the fun! For the organisers

:04:51. > :04:56.it is about legacy, for the raiders that is about this link. He`ding to

:04:57. > :04:59.cancel. Two hours and 12 minutes in setting off and now 50 miles into

:05:00. > :05:05.the stage at the riders are streaming through the usually

:05:06. > :05:08.tranquil Essex countryside. The tour 's long`awaited arrival will be at

:05:09. > :05:13.Telstra and has triggered a celebration of cycling. Lots of

:05:14. > :05:18.people came out, it has been great to meet people, other cyclists, talk

:05:19. > :05:23.about returns the tour. There was some disappointment because Alex

:05:24. > :05:29.deficit had not made the totr. He will try to get into the totr next

:05:30. > :05:37.time. He needs this box tapdd. This is a bigger tour. As locals reclaim

:05:38. > :05:45.the tour, it continued on its 4 miles to the finish. We havd had a

:05:46. > :05:49.gloriously hot day as I say, in the skies opened about 20 minutds ago

:05:50. > :05:53.but let me show you some pictures of the end of the Tour de France. It

:05:54. > :05:57.went to Chelmsford and then passed the Olympic Park into London and the

:05:58. > :06:03.winner was Marcel Kittel who won the first stage as well, he is having a

:06:04. > :06:07.very good Tour de France. It was around three hours 30 minutds and 30

:06:08. > :06:11.seconds to do the whole course. It was raining in the mall when he got

:06:12. > :06:17.there. That did not dampen our day`to`day, with the top 22 guys who

:06:18. > :06:24.have done well. He is, landlord of the fox in. And Frank Tyler, a

:06:25. > :06:29.restaurant. Any idea how much business you have done? It has been

:06:30. > :06:39.a weeks business in a day. 400 copies for breakfast. And wd ran out

:06:40. > :06:44.of taken, 400 bands in. Excdllent. And you have special deals with

:06:45. > :06:47.celebratory packages and evdrything? , we had a marquee on the green

:06:48. > :06:52.which is still going on, but the also had 80 people within the pub

:06:53. > :06:57.who had a champagne breakfast and a four course lunch. We have sold a

:06:58. > :07:04.lot of beer and wine have h`ve had a great day. A lot of beer behng

:07:05. > :07:16.dumped out your! And my feet are a little sore now. I brought hn extra

:07:17. > :07:20.staff, my children came in. Apart from the business, when you looked

:07:21. > :07:26.out, this is a place that you do come to every day. What was your

:07:27. > :07:31.reaction? I have lived in 18 years and we thought, what will it be

:07:32. > :07:35.like? It was so friendly. Stch nice people. They queued all day and got

:07:36. > :07:41.their drinks and said thank you and it was great. It was fantastic. It

:07:42. > :07:47.made us all immensely proud of the village, it was lovely. A lovely

:07:48. > :08:01.day. Thank you for coming ott this evening in the rain. I hope that

:08:02. > :08:05.cries out for the celebrations. It is hard to believe that it was just

:08:06. > :08:10.the a few hours ago that thd tyres of the best cyclists in the world

:08:11. > :08:13.where lined up here. I was here at 7am and the crowds were alrdady

:08:14. > :08:18.beginning to gather. By the time of the Rhondda Park there were

:08:19. > :08:25.literally tens of thousands of people lining the small strdets and

:08:26. > :08:29.here. It has been a the rest day. And here in the centre of C`mbridge

:08:30. > :08:34.is where the party has taken place today. Things being cleared up now

:08:35. > :08:39.but you can still see behind me the white tents and that was cycling,

:08:40. > :08:43.that was village city reallx encouraging more people to get on

:08:44. > :08:47.their bikes. And you can sthll smell the cooking of French food from the

:08:48. > :08:59.market here. It has been a horrific day. As dawn broke over Cambridge

:09:00. > :09:05.UK's capital of cycling was preparing to host the biggest race

:09:06. > :09:10.of them all. 12`year`old jewel and ten`year`old Davie had gottdn up

:09:11. > :09:17.extra early to secure their place. How long have you been here? 61 , so

:09:18. > :09:24.does the two hours. As you `re just on the startling, that is alazing.

:09:25. > :09:28.How excited are you? Very excited. A flavour of France in the centre of

:09:29. > :09:33.Cambridge. What's the sea and plenty to eat. The party was starthng on

:09:34. > :09:39.Parkers piece and everyone was invited. I saw you through the

:09:40. > :09:44.crowds and has to stop you. I needed to answer the question, can I read a

:09:45. > :09:50.Penny Farthing? So I thought I better build one. In diffictlt is it

:09:51. > :09:57.too late? Raiding is OK but stopping any hurry is difficult. We have been

:09:58. > :10:03.warned! Thank you. This was Regent Street. Packed five or six deep in

:10:04. > :10:10.places, others found a way to avoid the crowds. Flags, cameras, mobile

:10:11. > :10:14.phones at the ready. This is the moment we have all been waiting for,

:10:15. > :10:19.the world elite cyclists whhzzing past and I tell you what it does not

:10:20. > :10:28.matter if you're cycling ard not it is really exciting to be here in the

:10:29. > :10:31.middle of it right now. We were expecting crowds and a lot of people

:10:32. > :10:36.but I can tell you that Parkers piece is absolutely packed. Everyone

:10:37. > :10:40.has moved on to watch the rdst of the race on the big screen `nd we

:10:41. > :10:44.will have a chat with these people. What was it like? Absolutelx

:10:45. > :10:50.brilliant, the noise, peopld shouting, the horns of motorbikes,

:10:51. > :10:55.really magnificent. It was ` great atmosphere wasn't it? Everyone was

:10:56. > :11:00.involved in is cheating, it was great. This was the birds exe view

:11:01. > :11:06.of the city that had looked forward to this day for months. There was

:11:07. > :11:12.real optimism that it had bden great for business. Hundreds of thousands

:11:13. > :11:15.of pounds of additional income that businesses will have gotten in

:11:16. > :11:20.Cambridge but everyone was hn the spirit and spending their money with

:11:21. > :11:24.a smile. A day that had been planned for months, erase that had been and

:11:25. > :11:29.gone in seconds but for manx the memories will last longer.

:11:30. > :11:36.Tony Purnell is from British Cycling.

:11:37. > :11:46.It has been amazing. Tremendous a party. You are responsible for the

:11:47. > :11:51.technical side of things and have experienced the Formula One. I

:11:52. > :11:56.wonder whether the rate is to the Tour de France as the car is the

:11:57. > :12:01.Formula One? Absolutely not, in Formula One it is 70% car, 30%

:12:02. > :12:10.brighter. At most it is the opposite here. Definitely 70% rate. The team

:12:11. > :12:12.makes a difference, so maybd 20 . 10% the bicycle itself. Any

:12:13. > :12:22.challenges facing the cyclists today? To be honest I think it was a

:12:23. > :12:26.straightforward, easy day for them. They certainly needed one after

:12:27. > :12:34.yesterday! We are more gentdel than the Yorkshireman, we sent them to

:12:35. > :12:37.see the Queen in London. It's the current governor have seconds to go

:12:38. > :12:40.past, I am just wondering whether you think that there will bd

:12:41. > :12:49.something longer lasting cure for Cambridge. Absolutely. If there are

:12:50. > :12:53.enough people seeing this, the very pinnacle of cycling, they whll be

:12:54. > :12:57.inspired. It is a great sport and what the nation needs for its

:12:58. > :13:03.health. Hopefully lots of youngsters will take cycling. And then I think

:13:04. > :13:07.the fact that over the CDs lore than 3 million people have turned out to

:13:08. > :13:10.see this, not just watched ht on the TV but gone out of their beds and

:13:11. > :13:16.come to see it, enjoyed the party atmosphere, it is a wake`up call to

:13:17. > :13:24.the politicians. We should raise our cities to the cycling cities, like

:13:25. > :13:31.Copenhagen in Europe which H believe as 50% of its journey by bicycle,

:13:32. > :13:36.much more than any city in Dngland. Cambridge is doing well but he could

:13:37. > :13:44.do better! Thank you very mtch. More from here later in the programme.

:13:45. > :13:49.Thank you very much indeed. People got here very early today and we

:13:50. > :13:53.stood alone in bright sunlight and then the cyclists went throtgh and I

:13:54. > :13:58.reckon with that bridge painted me which is one of the slowest point on

:13:59. > :14:02.the whole course it took thdm about 15 or 20 seconds to get through

:14:03. > :14:08.here. We waited for hours btt it was worth it. We will be back hdre later

:14:09. > :14:09.in the programme. But first let s round up the rest of the dax 's

:14:10. > :14:14.news. Hello, more than ?100 million pounds

:14:15. > :14:16.of Government funding has bden announced for our part of the

:14:17. > :14:19.region, and more than half of it The money will help completd

:14:20. > :14:24.a number of projects including the roll out of stperfast

:14:25. > :14:27.broadband, new relief roads for Bury St Edmunds and Beccles and further

:14:28. > :14:30.improvements to the A127 in Essex. Three of our further educathon

:14:31. > :14:49.colleges at Lowestoft, Easton This is a big award that business

:14:50. > :14:54.leaders say will make the difference. Making it easier for

:14:55. > :14:58.local businesses to grow in the local workforce to be traindd. 60

:14:59. > :15:04.million will be spent in Norfolk and Suffolk over the next two ydars

:15:05. > :15:07.Fantastically important. A transformational moment for the

:15:08. > :15:12.knowledge and Suffolk econoly. We are being given ?300 million to

:15:13. > :15:17.spend on growth, jobs and enterprise. Education does well

:15:18. > :15:23.among the big winners in Lowestoft College which will spend ?10 million

:15:24. > :15:26.on an engineering centre. Wdll Eastern College near Norwich will

:15:27. > :15:30.spend still formally and potnds on a new construction training cdntre

:15:31. > :15:36.which it hopes to have open in the next two years. This is verx

:15:37. > :15:40.important to us, we have bedn proved by industry to develop work in

:15:41. > :15:44.construction to make what is it very significant demand for construction

:15:45. > :15:49.in the region. We have had considerable success in doing so.

:15:50. > :15:54.But we have run out of spacd. Today the plans won the approval of the

:15:55. > :15:57.transport minister. There h`s been an important change this tile

:15:58. > :16:03.around. Local business groups have decided where the money shotld go.

:16:04. > :16:08.Far too often if Waco dictates, Whitehall will save me what this but

:16:09. > :16:11.then locals will see, we wish you had done something else. Wh`t this

:16:12. > :16:17.does is listen to local people s priorities. That is why it hs so

:16:18. > :16:21.important. There will be money to help small companies expand, like

:16:22. > :16:25.this past the manufacturer which has just bought a bigger factorx thanks

:16:26. > :16:29.to a loan from a local enterprise partnership. This housing scheme can

:16:30. > :16:36.now be completed because money has been found for a new development.

:16:37. > :16:40.Labour call is a stunt and see it as too little too late but the

:16:41. > :16:45.government says the record investment will make the difference.

:16:46. > :16:48.The region's commuter trains could get a better WiFi service,

:16:49. > :16:52.It's to be paid for out of ` fine, which is being imposed on

:16:53. > :16:54.Network Rail for failing to meet punctuality targets.

:16:55. > :16:57.Train firms will have to bid for the money.

:16:58. > :16:59.Priority's expected to be ghven to the busy lines into London.

:17:00. > :17:01.Two men have been charged after armed police surrounddd

:17:02. > :17:04.a holiday complex near Great Yarmouth at the weekend.

:17:05. > :17:07.A trained negotiator was also called to the scene in Ormesby.

:17:08. > :17:10.The men were arrested after three hours.

:17:11. > :17:16.They face 20 counts of theft, burglary and possessing weapons

:17:17. > :17:19.Tributes have been paid to a former motorcross rider who's died

:17:20. > :17:24.Dave Bickers from Suffolk was nicknamed

:17:25. > :17:40.He later ran a stunt companx and worked on eight James Bond films.

:17:41. > :17:47.He has rendered ten! He has done it! What a fantastic race! The

:17:48. > :17:53.fearless fighter whose race was never over. He was so passionate

:17:54. > :17:57.about bikes that he said he never worked a day in his whole lhfe. He

:17:58. > :18:03.met his wife when she was a motocross Marshall and just a few

:18:04. > :18:08.weeks ago aged 76 attended the veterans weekend in Colorado. Every

:18:09. > :18:11.day of his life he got up in the morning and was in the workshop and

:18:12. > :18:18.I cant remember him being any different. It was 90% of his life,

:18:19. > :18:23.motorbikes. After his motocross career Dave Vickers opened ` stunt

:18:24. > :18:28.company. His collection of bikes is still housed in the workshop. In

:18:29. > :18:33.1979 he appeared in escape case chatting. It was in 1983 th`t his

:18:34. > :18:41.association with James Bond film started. Helping engineer the speed

:18:42. > :18:45.for scene in Octopussy. It was all about getting the boat to go through

:18:46. > :18:49.360 degrees and live in the water with Bond in the boat. It w`s a very

:18:50. > :18:54.tricky stunt at the time my dad did not get enough recognition for it.

:18:55. > :19:02.He also engineered the car stunts into one of advice. We had ` great

:19:03. > :19:06.time chasing the BMW. Loving motorbikes meant loving wifd. And

:19:07. > :19:10.Suffolk the man they called Mr Fixit will never be forgotten.

:19:11. > :19:12.Norfolk's police commissiondr is going back to work while

:19:13. > :19:15.Stephen Bett had said he was "stepping aside" while the

:19:16. > :19:17.Independent Police Complaints commission looked

:19:18. > :19:20.But questions were raised about whether he could legally pass

:19:21. > :19:25.He says he's returning to work to avoid a "costly legal wrangle".

:19:26. > :19:28.It follows a meeting of the county's Police and Crime p`nel

:19:29. > :19:30.The expenses under investig`tion involve claims for mileage between

:19:31. > :19:40.That is it from the newsrool. Back to Stewart in the village of

:19:41. > :19:56.cinching field. Welcome back to Essex on thd day

:19:57. > :20:02.that the Tour de France camd to visit. As I was driving herd a

:20:03. > :20:06.source of many people on thdir bicycles coming here and as you

:20:07. > :20:10.moved around there were so lany representatives of death cycling

:20:11. > :20:18.clubs from all over the reghon. People who have come here today to

:20:19. > :20:22.enjoy it. I read one person who cycled one of the routes from one

:20:23. > :20:25.state of the Tour de France and was about twice as long in doing it as

:20:26. > :20:38.the raiders in the race. It was a busy day.

:20:39. > :20:45.Fans of the tour started arriving at 40 a.m. And by 9am it was btsy. A

:20:46. > :20:51.big day for local traders and for the many cycling clubs that had come

:20:52. > :20:55.to watch. This club has comd from Luton. We have come here and thought

:20:56. > :20:59.this was a nice spot becausd they sell bacon rolls! And althotgh we

:21:00. > :21:03.are able to copy or head on a Saturday and we are known as the

:21:04. > :21:05.bacon rollers because there must be a beacon all involved somewhere

:21:06. > :21:11.before we can go home. Therd was modest batting, jets on the road and

:21:12. > :21:21.vans selling Tour de France merchandise. From the air, the

:21:22. > :21:24.village would the picture. Steve Eve Graham only has the top of the

:21:25. > :21:33.village and had one of the best seat in the. You have a beer? Of course!

:21:34. > :21:40.It is only 11 o'clock in thd morning. It is allowed. Look at

:21:41. > :21:52.this. It is superb. The tour came by just after one o'clock. Aftdr a long

:21:53. > :21:57.wait, here comes the peloton. Team Sky are at the front, but it is hard

:21:58. > :22:04.to see much. It is very exchting. Excellent. They flashed by dnd

:22:05. > :22:09.22nd, the crowd cheering. Vdry. I have seen it in France but on home

:22:10. > :22:12.territory it is even better. For some it was all too much. Btt in

:22:13. > :22:19.years to come and her about the day the world 's biggest big race came

:22:20. > :22:23.to the village. Let's meet two others from the

:22:24. > :22:27.village. Graham is the parish council chairman and this is the

:22:28. > :22:31.manager of the Guildhall and you have lived here all your life. Have

:22:32. > :22:35.you seen a deal like this? Ht has been quite extraordinary. The

:22:36. > :22:40.atmosphere was electric and exciting so it has been a great thrill and it

:22:41. > :22:44.was a huge success for everxone I have spoken to many people hn the

:22:45. > :22:49.village added has put us on the map again. It is the most photographed

:22:50. > :22:53.village and country but it looks a picture today. It was fantastic for

:22:54. > :22:59.the village and a great day for everyone who was here. Visitors and

:23:00. > :23:02.residents. And hopefully successful for local businesses. But a great

:23:03. > :23:06.wonderful family atmosphere all day. It has been. Thank you for looking

:23:07. > :23:17.after us. Let's go back to Cambridge.

:23:18. > :23:20.Thousands of people were here today and nearly all of them had ` tablet

:23:21. > :23:27.or mobile phone ready to capture the moment. Many of you were sh`ring

:23:28. > :23:30.your stories and tweets with us today. Thank you for that.

:23:31. > :23:33.Like this one from Elle Wilson who tweeted from her father's office to

:23:34. > :23:36.say "Best view in Finchingfheld of the Tour de France perks of Dad s

:23:37. > :23:39.job" and this stunning imagd sent to us from Paul Coxon of the rhders

:23:40. > :23:43.going past King's College in Cambridge.. Here's the bdst

:23:44. > :25:22.Thank you to everyone who got in touch to help us record this very

:25:23. > :25:27.special day. For me it was best summed up by the batons Phelps

:25:28. > :25:34.family from Suffolk who simply said it has been a great party. Back to

:25:35. > :25:38.you. The sun has not come out but the

:25:39. > :25:39.rain has stopped. That is p`rt of the weather forecast. Time for the

:25:40. > :25:48.rest of it. I start with the satellite picture,

:25:49. > :25:53.the blues and greens indicating where we have those heavy downpours

:25:54. > :25:56.that affected Stewart. We still have the risk of further showers into

:25:57. > :26:01.this evening and the rest of the night. When you see when it could be

:26:02. > :26:05.on the heavy side with perh`ps some thunder but becoming drier

:26:06. > :26:12.everywhere. Lows for many of us around 12 degrees. Some of ts could

:26:13. > :26:15.drop to around six or 7 degrees Tomorrow we start of Financd try

:26:16. > :26:21.with patchy mist and fog but that should quickly clear and thdn some

:26:22. > :26:26.showers, some of which could be heavy profundity. The best hn the

:26:27. > :26:30.sunshine will be inland, and earned 21 degrees. We finished the day with

:26:31. > :26:33.a good scrapping of heavy thundery showers and The Met office has

:26:34. > :26:39.issued a yellow warning for that heavy rain. The heaviest is expected

:26:40. > :26:43.to hit parts of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire where we are

:26:44. > :26:49.expecting to get 20 or 30 millimetres. Definitely somd

:26:50. > :26:52.localised flooding. A great deal of uncertainty on Wednesday depending

:26:53. > :26:55.on how quickly the warm front pages westwards but looking like ` dry

:26:56. > :26:59.start with heavy rain and blustery wind moving in. On Thursday it is

:27:00. > :27:03.looking closely with further outbreaks of heavy rain and then on

:27:04. > :27:07.Friday, depending on what h`ppens on Wednesday and Thursday, probably

:27:08. > :27:11.some showers but it could bdcome much warmer and the could sde

:27:12. > :27:18.something as high as 24 or 25 degrees. Before I call thesd are

:27:19. > :27:21.overnight lows. Today I have seen people watching

:27:22. > :27:26.the Tour de France standing on the back of trailers, they have put them

:27:27. > :27:29.up very high to see over thd heads of people in front of them. Someone

:27:30. > :27:34.on a flatbed truck, handing out of windows. The organisers is said by

:27:35. > :27:38.the Tour de France came herd that they wanted this region to be shown

:27:39. > :27:43.in a very special light. Thd sun shone, the riders came in this

:27:44. > :27:47.region looked a picture. From all of us, good night.
