:00:12. > :00:13.David Ruffley, the MP for Bury St Edmunds hs

:00:14. > :00:16.fighting for his political life tonight after a letter was published

:00:17. > :00:19.about his recent police caution for assaulting his former girlfriend.

:00:20. > :00:21.Written by the Dean of St Edmundsbury, it claims

:00:22. > :00:24.the assault was more serious than Mr Ruffley had admitted.

:00:25. > :00:26.Tonight the MP said he considered the matter closed.

:00:27. > :00:43.This report from our political correspondent Andrew Sinclahr.

:00:44. > :00:49.Until evening, the MP has stayed silent about what happened here at

:00:50. > :00:51.his London flat for months `go, hoping the controversy would go

:00:52. > :00:56.away. He has been condemned by women's groups and party melbers but

:00:57. > :00:59.it is the unintended public`tion of a letter from the Dean of S`int

:01:00. > :01:04.Edmunds Greyhound the detail that has had the most dramatic effect. In

:01:05. > :01:08.a letter written last week `nd copied to a number of peopld in the

:01:09. > :01:12.Conservative Party, and meets today on a political website, the very

:01:13. > :01:21.regular and Francis Ward dods not mince her words.

:01:22. > :01:35.She then goes on to say:. She said that when she went to meet his

:01:36. > :01:35.former girlfriend and went to hug her

:01:36. > :01:38.that when she went to meet his former girlfriend and after the

:01:39. > :01:42.assault the Winston obvious pain and when talking about the assatlt had

:01:43. > :01:47.been frightened of your ragd and violent behaviour. She has remained

:01:48. > :01:52.unwilling to speak out but H cannot let you try to tell me it w`s only a

:01:53. > :01:55.little local incident or th`t she was at fault, I must remain two of

:01:56. > :02:03.the seriousness of the assatlt and that you were under arrest not her.

:02:04. > :02:04.Tonight, a statement from the NPA admitted to what he called on

:02:05. > :02:26.appropriate action on his p`rt. The MP's local party will mdet next

:02:27. > :02:32.week to discuss the issue btt at the moment it is backing him. Not

:02:33. > :02:39.everyone is happy. This has gone on for too long. I think he hoped it

:02:40. > :02:42.would disappear but it hasn't. All of the bits and pieces of modern

:02:43. > :02:49.communications are a late whth what is going on. People think that his

:02:50. > :02:52.position is no prejudice to such an extent that he cannot continue. You

:02:53. > :03:01.has now finally explained He hopes that is enough.

:03:02. > :03:04.I ask Andrew whether he thotght the MP had done enough. It is h`rd to

:03:05. > :03:10.find any supporters of him on social media, the Bury Saint Edmunds

:03:11. > :03:14.society that led the calls for him to go as tweeted tonight, wd are

:03:15. > :03:21.appalled by his statement. He has no credibility. A member of thd party,

:03:22. > :03:25.she works in Norfolk and was one of the first people to actuallx

:03:26. > :03:30.criticising, is seeing, this news is simply not good enough I will not

:03:31. > :03:35.let it drop. The Conservative Police and Crime Commissioners for Suffolk

:03:36. > :03:39.is seeing the late, such behaviour is inexcusable. I had done that I

:03:40. > :03:43.would have had to resign. Wd cannot have these issues being swept under

:03:44. > :03:47.the carpet. At the end of the day what happens next will be how this

:03:48. > :03:53.is played in the newspapers over the next few days. If there is `n outcry

:03:54. > :03:57.it will look bad. And the local party is due to meet next wdek to

:03:58. > :04:01.discuss this? That is right, the party is officially supporthng him

:04:02. > :04:06.but we know that there are ` knob of people in the party who havd a lot

:04:07. > :04:10.concerns, it is interesting that the Dean chose to copy this letter to a

:04:11. > :04:13.number of conservatives within the Bury Saint Edmunds any which shows

:04:14. > :04:16.there is a lot of concern about there is a lot of concern about

:04:17. > :04:18.this. Thank you. A former headmaster who's now

:04:19. > :04:21.in his 80s has pleaded not guilty to a series of sexual assaults

:04:22. > :04:24.against a pupil 40 years ago. David Tuohy who now lives in Oxford

:04:25. > :04:27.was headmaster at the former Eccles He'll appear at Norwich Crown Court

:04:28. > :04:33.again at the end of Septembdr. Police investigating the de`th

:04:34. > :04:35.of a Lithuanian couple on the A 7 in Norfolk have found items

:04:36. > :04:38.belonging to the couple Tadas Zaleskas and

:04:39. > :04:42.Nonita Karajevaite were both hit Police are treating her death

:04:43. > :04:45.as suspicious, believing she may have been pushed

:04:46. > :04:56.into the traffic by her fiance. Senior racing figures in Newmarket

:04:57. > :04:57.have described the latest drugs controversx to hit

:04:58. > :05:00.the town as a "genuine mist`ke" The sport is back in the he`dlines

:05:01. > :05:03.after it emerged the Queen's horse Estimate failed a drugs test

:05:04. > :05:16.after the recent Gold Cup at Ascot. A string of horses returning to

:05:17. > :05:19.Freemason Lodge this morning, Sir Michael Stoute would have woken up

:05:20. > :05:23.to some very uncomfortable headlines but it was business as usual in the

:05:24. > :05:29.yard. As we were filming, she grew up in his car. We have issudd a

:05:30. > :05:36.statement and are waiting for the tests. When estimate one thd past

:05:37. > :05:43.but the Queen was deleted. But when the five`year old men finished

:05:44. > :05:48.second she tested positive for morphine. It is thought the morphine

:05:49. > :05:53.came from seeds from the fedd made in Kettering. They were not to sell

:05:54. > :05:59.to see us God `` perhaps because they have a Royal warrant. The

:06:00. > :06:02.issued a statement saying that the bid not have the contaminathon on

:06:03. > :06:08.their premises but from the supplier. The feed company producing

:06:09. > :06:14.our feet are rigorous in making sure that these things do not get in but

:06:15. > :06:18.a poppy seed is the size of a pinhead and it does not takd too

:06:19. > :06:22.many poppy seeds to come up with a positive sample. At the anntal

:06:23. > :06:26.health trusts to Dyson is an expert in equine medicine. The testing

:06:27. > :06:34.these blood samples undergo its vigorous. They can pick up tiny

:06:35. > :06:38.amount of foreign substances. We have no idea of the concentration

:06:39. > :06:40.identified. If it was a tinx concentration it will have `

:06:41. > :06:47.negligible effect on the horse's performance. Embarrassing for the

:06:48. > :06:48.Queen. What is clear is that when it comes to banned substances hn the

:06:49. > :06:51.British were fitting authorhty is British were fitting authorhty is

:06:52. > :06:55.determined to pursue a zero tolerance approach.

:06:56. > :06:58.As you'll be aware, the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games

:06:59. > :07:00.was held tonight, kicking off eleven days of competithon.

:07:01. > :07:03.43 athletes from our region are amongst the thousands taking part.

:07:04. > :07:06.Our sports reporter Tom Williams spent the day in Glasgow finding out

:07:07. > :07:22.A spectacular Scottish welcome 4 England, sporting rivalry c`st

:07:23. > :07:28.aside. After all, these are billed as the friendly games. The village

:07:29. > :07:32.is filling up, 71 nation silile I think themselves with their new

:07:33. > :07:38.surroundings. The athletes `re settling in. Some are getting

:07:39. > :07:43.creative. Others just getting comfortable. The hub of the village

:07:44. > :07:47.is the dining hall, with around 4500 athletes lost the support staff the

:07:48. > :07:54.estimate 20,000 meals per d`y will be served. Catering for all tastes.

:07:55. > :07:57.Team England is the biggest team, over 400 athletes and there has been

:07:58. > :08:02.a huge investment in sports science, physio and recovery equipment here

:08:03. > :08:07.in the lion 's den. Athletes are moving towards the limits of human

:08:08. > :08:10.performance, we are trying to decode these marginal gains in this area is

:08:11. > :08:15.what will give us that. We can move people from off the podium `nd onto

:08:16. > :08:21.the podium but more importantly from bronze into gold. 4500 athldtes are

:08:22. > :08:26.here, the venues are ready `nd with over 1 billion people watchhng

:08:27. > :08:30.around the world let the 20th Commonwealth Games begin.

:08:31. > :08:34.There is no hanging about, the action starts straightaway hn the

:08:35. > :08:43.morning, with swelling, badlinton and squash. You can follow the

:08:44. > :08:47.progress of all of the athldtes on the east on your local BBC radio

:08:48. > :08:53.station and on the website. That's all from me, even as the

:08:54. > :08:58.weather. After a hot day a warm and dry and eight, long clear spells out

:08:59. > :09:02.there with Patrick load and perhaps the odd missed part as he gdt into

:09:03. > :09:08.the early hours of the mornhng. We begin Thursday quite warm and it

:09:09. > :09:11.will quickly caught up in the way to work. At easterly breeze will mean

:09:12. > :09:16.that we record cooler temperatures on the coast into the mid`20s, but

:09:17. > :09:25.further west certainly 27 or 28 degrees is quite possible. Ht is

:09:26. > :09:31.likely to stay fine race through the day. Here is our output, a settle

:09:32. > :09:32.for gas for the rest of the week and into the weekend,

:09:33. > :09:33.of some showers and at Wilton cooler from the north. The national picture

:09:34. > :09:48.comes from Philip Avery. Unusually, I can say good morning.

:09:49. > :09:53.Wednesday has been noticeable for a number of reasons. From a

:09:54. > :09:54.meteorological point of view, it was the warmest
